Oakey majority not heard in Acland decision - Chamber The majority of people in Oakey need to be heard on the New Acland Coal Stage Three project, Chamber of Commerce president Andrew Langton has told a business forum in Toowoomba. Mr Langton said the Land Court decision, which recommended against Stage Three progressing, was a decision for the minority, and the majority were not heard. He said the majority of people in the Oakey district understand how much it means for the continuation of mining at New Acland. “We at Oakey have been copping it left, right, and centre. "It’s a town that should be booming. But it’s very frustrating. “The majority of people in Oakey need to be heard,” Mr Langton said. Mr Langton was speaking at a Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise function at the Empire Church to hear Dr Anthony Lynham, Minister for State Development, Resources and Mines, in a series for political speakers leading up to the next State election. Liberal leader Tim Nicholls spoke at a previous function, and Pauline Hanson and other leaders are to address a future function. Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio told the forum that should Acland Stage Three not proceed, there would be significant challenges for Oakey. “We need to get our heads around the situation and support Oakey,” he said. Cr Antonio said that in his 35 years in local Government (Toowoomba and Millmerran), he had never seen a place that has had “a hammering” as Oakey has. The list he was referring to includes events such as the 2011 floods when more than 100 homes were inundated, the contaminated water crisis from fire fighting foam, the current business and real estate difficulties, and the potential to lose Acland stage three. Cr Antonio urged Minister Lynham to consider all matters as he decides on Acland Stage Three. Cr Antonio said the 10 mayors from across southern and western Queensland were backing him in his support for Oakey. He said the future of the western rail line also needed to be considered. The majority of freight to the Port of Brisbane currently is coal from Acland, and he suggested jobs, including those at the port, could be lost without the continuation of Acland coal. Mayors support Antonio on Acland Darling Downs and South West Queensland Mayors has joined Mayor Paul Antonio in expressing concerns about the future of Oakey The Darling Downs and South West Queensland Council of Mayors is calling on Minister for State Development, Natural Resources and Mines, Anthony Lynham to carefully consider the impact the closure of New Acland Mine would have on their communities. The group’s chair, Cr Paul Antonio hand delivered a letter from the group to Minister Lynham when he visited Toowoomba last week for the TSBE Political Leaders series. Cr Antonio said the group understood the approval process is complex but wanted the Minister to ensure a decision on the future of the mine is balanced, and takes into account all relevant issues. “A major economic contributor to the Toowoomba and south west Queensland region, the mine currently injects $300 million into Queensland’s economy and $100 million into the Darling Downs economy annually,” Cr Antonio said. The 10 mayors believe the impact of the mine stretches much further than the community of Oakey and the Toowoomba Region, and say they can’t ignore that the economic impact of the mine, should the $850 million expansion go ahead, is estimated at $530 million a year. “The operation employs about 800 staff, 275 local men and women and 507 contractors, as well as providing for around 2300 indirect jobs,” Cr Antonio said. If the life of the mine is extended until 2029, it is projected that the site would go on to provide 260 additional jobs during construction and up to 435 jobs during the mine’s operational phase. “The loss of coal from Acland on the rail freight network would adversely affect transport costs for agricultural commodities across south-west Queensland via a loss of cross subsidies, especially grain, and ongoing rail line maintenance costs at a time when we should be vigorously pursuing efficiencies to grow our world-class agricultural offering,” Cr Antonio said. “A rejection of the application for the Stage 3 expansion of the New Acland mine would deliver a devastating economic and social blow to the community of Oakey, which is still reeling from the much publicised impact of ground-water contamination, and to the broader Queensland economy,” Cr Antonio said. The headline should have reflected the opening paragraphs which read: "New Acland Coal's application for a stay in the Supreme Court has not been granted. New Acland had sought a judicial inquiry into the Land Court's decision not to grant the leases and licences necessary for the company to proceed with Stage 3 of the coal project." The Herald apologises for this unintentional error. • Judy Cuskelly, teacher, and director Beth Watt, fundraising officer, and Mr Watts.
