Why are people unaware
that most of the
bacon they buy is imported?
Why are they not
concerned that their
buying habits are adversely
affecting Australian
pork producers,
including good,
efficient local producers?
More than twothirds
of bacon, about
70 per cent, sold in
Australia is made
from imported pork,
yet most consumers
remain unaware.
Australian Pork
Limited’s CEO Andrew
Spencer said
that most people assume
that the tasty,
crispy bacon they’re
enjoying is Australian.
“While people prefer
to buy Australian
and support our farmers,
most consumers
simply have no idea
that their bacon and
ham might not be
made from Australian
The right kind of
compost is the fertiliser
that nature intended,
according to Chris
Cameron who with
his daughter Catriona
Dale, is planning to
manufacture and market
compost with a special
ingredient.
For 50 years, Chris
has been experimenting
with composts and soil
minerals and microorganisms,
and the family
company, Platinum
Compost, is beginning
to achieve results.
At a presentation in
Toowoomba recently,
they spoke about the
use of their compost on
a chilli and capsicum
farm in the Bowen district,
where yields increased
200 percent in
the first year, and with
a saving of $600,000
in the second year because
the farmer was
able to double space the
crop rows, and without
any pest and disease
pressures.
product).
“In a country
where we celebrate
our produce for its
quality and availability,
that’s shocking
for most people,” Mr
Spencer said.
“They can’t understand
why we’re
importing pork from
the other side of the
world.”
Last week was Australian
Bacon Week,
which was introduced
so Australians could
celebrate the very
best 100 per cent
Aussie bacon, but also
raise awareness of imports.
While pig farmers
have been fighting
imports in ham, bacon
and smallgoods
for years, Mr Spencer
said imported ribs
Platinum Compost
wants to set-up its
business on the Darling
Downs and in the
Lockyer Valley where
he was encouraged by
former Mayor, the late
Steve Jones, and others.
At the AgTech Investment
Forum 400M,
conducted recently in
Toowoomba by Food
Leaders Australia, a
division of Toowoomba
and Surat Basin Enterprise,
Catriona and
Chris outlined how the
business would operate,
along with financial information.
They said their compost
provided ingredients
for soil and plant
health, and the compost
making process took
just 28 days, compared
to five to 18 months for
some other processes.
Chris refused to give
details of his “secret” ingredients,
saying it had
taken him 50 years to
work it out, and he was
giving it to no one.
However, a basis of
the compost was ruminant
manure.
He told the audience
that in 15 years working
and bellies were now
also causing issues.
“Imported pork
is now making its
way onto consumers’
plates by way of ribs
and bellies which are
being heat treated and
sold into restaurants,”
he said.
These products are
from New Zealand
and contributed to a
major drop in prices
paid to farmers for
their pigs earlier this
year.
“For years we have
told consumers to
look for the Pork-
Mark and ask their
retailers if their bacon
and ham is true blue,
but now we also need
you to ask your waiter
or chef,” Mr Spencer
said.
“We hope chefs and
restaurants will ditch
this shelf stable, sterilised
pork and go back
to serving fresh, local
pork.”
All fresh pork is
proudly Australian
and Mr Spencer said
consumers could
confidently continue
cooking their favourite
dishes at home, but
when it came to bacon,
ham and smallgoods
or prepared
meat cuts, consumers
needed to check the
labels.
with compost in North
Queensland, the manufacturing
process was stable
and he had never had
a contamination problem
with unwanted bacteria.
Platinum Compost was
one of a dozen new technology
ideas which were
presented to the Forum,
the second to be held in
Toowoomba.
They combined with
successful agricultural
and technology leaders at
the forum which is gaining
in Australia.
it?” Mr Spencer
Speakers at the AgTech Investment Forum in
Toowoomba, Bruce Vandersee, Chief Executive
Officer Vanderfield Machinery, and Catriona
McVeigh has referred to
the Darling Downs as the
cotton industry and seed
Total Combined Yarding of 1040 head
Market Quotes: As last sale for financial
year cattle numbers increased by almost 300
compared to previous week. Export prices
slipped a little with less competition on cows &
heavy steers. Feeder steers across the board
remained strong with trade feeders maybe
slightly dearer. Young cattle to suit restockers
met strong competition once again. Vealer
market has also improved. A better quality
