Crows Nest Garden Club meets this Saturday<br />

Crows Nest Garden Club will hold its next<br />

meeting in the CWA Hall, Thallon Street, Crows<br />

Nest, this Saturday, <strong>July</strong> 8 starting at 1.30pm.<br />

The topic for the day will be Growing and Using<br />

Herbs. Members are asked to bring recipes and<br />

100th birthday<br />

Mrs Merle McCoist, a resident at the EAF<br />

McDonald Nursing Home, Oakey, celebrated<br />

her 100th birthday on Monday, <strong>July</strong> 3. Family<br />

and friends gathered at the home to celebrate the<br />

milestone with a high tea.<br />

and clumps of herbs can also be bought<br />

along for sharing. Members are invited to display<br />

a posy of mixed herbs on the bench. Visitors are<br />

CWA meeting<br />

Ladies are invited to the <strong>High</strong>fields CWA Group<br />

Christmas in <strong>July</strong> morning tea on Monday, <strong>July</strong> 10,<br />

from 10am to noon at the RSL Sub-Branch rooms,<br />

Jacaranda Manor. It will be a social morning with<br />

guest speaker. Admission is $5.<br />

Empire celebrates 20 years<br />

The Empire Theatre threw<br />

open the doors on Sunday, June<br />

25 to celebrate its 20th anniversary<br />

season.<br />

People all around the district<br />

came to catch a rare<br />

chance to look at what goes<br />

on behind the scenes of<br />

the massive productions.<br />

The day held many activities<br />

for visitors such as performances,<br />

workshops, screenings,<br />

tours and demonstrations.<br />

There were even the costumes<br />

of past productions on display.<br />

The open day featured a variety<br />

of performances, from plays,<br />

acapella groups, country music,<br />

concert and big bands, musicals<br />

and opera.<br />

<strong>High</strong>lights included the Australian<br />

Army band from Brisbane<br />

which performed both<br />

concert in the morning and big<br />

AoCN classes and exhibitions<br />

Artist Bill Morton was well<br />

prepared for the 13 participants<br />

attending the recent<br />

drawing class in Crows Nest.<br />

Bill explained and demonstrated<br />

the key concepts of drawing<br />

including format, proportion,<br />

placement, centre of interest and<br />

balance of positive and negative<br />

space.<br />

With a choice of still life subject<br />

matter, everyone produced a<br />

couple of drawings by the end of<br />

the day and were amazed at what<br />

they were able to produce.<br />

was attended by several Crows<br />

Nest artists who had entered<br />

works.<br />

Most celebrated win was by<br />

Bill Morton’s best of show with<br />

his painting ‘Still Life with Proteas,<br />

Pottery’ and Pam Shipman<br />

was thrilled to receive a highly<br />

commended for her pastel ‘Illuminated’.<br />

AoCN members will be exhibiting<br />

in Warwick at the Art in<br />

St Mark’s exhibition during this<br />

month’s Jumpers n Jazz festival.<br />

Seascapes will be the topic for<br />

the next wine and cheese opening<br />

night in the Nest Café Crows<br />

Members enjoyed wine and cheese at the current<br />

exhibition opening.<br />

Workshops included an augmented<br />

reality ghost hunt,<br />

puppet making, drama workshops,<br />

stage make up directions<br />

to transform you into any<br />

manner of creature, contemporary<br />

dance workshop and a<br />

story book theatre workshop.<br />

Tours were also available<br />

throughout the day, including the<br />

history tour, as you took a walk<br />

down memory lane and learned<br />

of the history of the Empire, and<br />

the technical tour which entailed<br />

a specialised behind the scenes<br />

look into the making of a production.<br />
