Side Trips 

We certainly heard a variety of music 

in the last few days. The one thing 

we really didn’t hear, though, was 

Damon Dotson’s annual Lake Effect concert 

on Miller’s Bay. 

We were there. 

As were hundreds 

of other boats and 

thousands of boaters. 

But we couldn’t hear 

a thing from where 

we were thanks to the 

stereo effect coming 

from boats on all sides 

of us. It wasn’t bad to 

listen to their music 

(most of the time) but 

I can’t tell you a single 

song or comment

from the barge where the concert took place 

that we supposedly went to listen to. 

We also heard parts of the Paisan concert 

at Preservation Plaza Saturday night, 

Cashed Out at Boji Bay Sunday night, the 

last of Rolling Stoners, also Sunday night, 

and then switched back to country for the 

Farm Rock Band Monday at Preservation 

Plaza. 

The concerts become such a social engagement 

as we always seem to run into 

people we know, and then spend time visiting 

rather than listening. That happened 

Saturday night as we were walking along 

the sidewalk from Broadway down to the 

concert space. 

I remembered that my friend from Missouri 

had said her daughter was spending 

the Fourth of July holiday in Okoboji. I was 

walking and looking at my phone to locate 

her number when my husband gave me a 

nudge. I looked up fearing I was going to 

walk into someone — which I was. 

But it was my friend’s daughter, who had 

spotted us walking toward them and was intentionally 

heading my way for the collision. 

Guess that’s what you call “running into” 

an old friend.

Visit a whole new world right 

here in the Iowa Great Lakes. 

The cast and crew at Treasure 

Village will bring the streets and palaces 

of Arabia to life with a production 

of “Aladdin.” The 14-show run 

began on July 4 with the final curtain 

going up Aug. 4. 

Each show starts at 10 a.m. and tickets 

cost $7 for guests ages 11 and up 

and $5 for those between the ages of 

three and 10. 

The fast-paced, action-packed show 

diverges from the Disney-version, but 

retains all the family fun from the 

classic movie that has delighted fans 

for so many years. 

“We emphasize and talk about the 

power of love and friendship holding 

up against magic,” said Deborah 

Clark, director and costume coordinator 

for the play. 

While the audience won’t be invited 

on stage this go-around, they are still 

plenty involved in the show. 

“The audience is our ‘city.’” Clark 

said. “The actors walk through the city 

and there are chase scenes when Aladdin 

has to run from the guards and 

the audience will have to help him 

hide.” 

The interactive action makes for a 

lot of fun, for both the actors and the 

audience enjoying the show. 

“We make use of every level of the 

stage — the thrusts, stairs and floor. 

There are typically 3-4 set changes per 

act for most of our shows, but this one 

has 7-9 changes,” Clark said. 

That makes for some ultra-quick 

costume changes for a few actors playing 

multiple roles. 

Connor Mullen noted he had about 

30 seconds to change from a guard 

to Aladdin’s friend from the streets, 

while Livie Gordon has just a bit longer 

to go from the Sultana to another 

guard. 

Aladdin is played by Zachary Gordy 

and the Genie by his sister Hannah 

Gordy. Their sibling connection helps 

give them a leg up on the chemistry 

needed between such close characters. 

“We always know how to play off 

each other and make each other 

laugh. That makes the chemistry easy 

for Aladdin and the Genie,” Hannah 

Gordy said. 

Peppered between the changes and 

action throughout the show is plenty 

of humor. 

“The humor is more spread out 

in our production, while the Genie 

carried most of that in the Disney 

version,” technical director Linnea 

Lambert said. 

While the Genie still gets to crack up 

the crowd, more characters get in the 

act. 

Livie Gordon thinks the Treasure 

Village production is actually funnier 

than the Disney version and that 

the audience will appreciate some 

“The Princess Bride” references in the 

script. 

In another change from the original, 

Emily Burnette, notes that there 

is a lot more “girl power” in their version 

as Princess Jasrah will actually get 

to save the day.

‘Footloose’ brings the fun 

Show’s success due to 

effort by cast and crew

If Bruno Tonioli, the exuberant Italian 

judge on ABC’s Dancing with 

the Stars, was given the opportunity 

to watch the Okoboji Summer 

Theatre’s presentation of “Footloose,” 

he would be able to use many of his 

favorite phrases to describe it. 

“Fantastic,” he would exclaim. 

“That was exploding with energy. 

Magnificent.” 

The cast and crew for this American 

musical favorite pour every bit of 

energy they have into each song and 

every dance. 

For anyone unfamiliar with the show, 

a big city kid and his mother move to 

a town in the middle of nowhere. He 

doesn’t fit in the new surroundings, and 

without trying to, creates upheaval. The 

preacher in the community is keeping 

a tight rein on the town and attempting 

to do the same with his teenage 

daughter. Eventually healing comes in 

the form of dance. 

Brandon Maldonado and Madison 

Dodd fill the lead roles of Ren Mc- 

Cormack and Ariel Moore. They share 

a nice chemistry and a relationship 

that develops during the course of the 

two-hour production. 

Maldonado brings varied talents to 

his role — fabulous voice, nice dancing, 

wide range of emotions. Maldonado 

and Ben Gibson, in the part of 

Willard Hewitt, are a great pairing as 

their friendship develops. Gibson’s 

character is the one who admits he 

can’t dance, so the rest of the guys 

jump in to teach him. 

The irony is that Gibson most certainly 

CAN dance, but he convinces 

us that he is learning as he goes. His 

expressions are excellent in the song 

“Mama Says.” 

The remainder of the group of guys 

— Brandon Mayville, Sam DeMuria, 

David Hall, and Nathan Woodard 

— each contribute to the success of 

the show. Watch for their individual 

talents as a basketball player, skateboarder, 

boxer and karate kid. You 

will also appreciate their individual 

dance moves during several of the 

numbers. 

The trouble-maker among the 

young men in town is Chuck Cranston, 

played by Tyler Breeding. We saw 

Breeding’s diverse talents in the season 

opener, and he follows that performance 

with a moodier portrayal in 

this show. 

The group of guys in “Footloose” is 

talented, but they are complemented 

with an equally worthy group of gals. 

Madison Dodd fills the lead female 

role of Ariel, the rebellious preacher’s 

daughter. She and her girlfriends are a 

tight bunch. Rusty, Urleen and Wendy 

Jo are played by Delainey Phillips, 

Madilynn Mansur and Abigayle Huggins. 

You will be impressed with the 

huge voices that come from these 

ladies — most of the time doing 

their singing at the same time as their 

demanding dancing. Phillips singing 

“Let’s Hear it for the Boy” is one of the 

night’s best moments. Dodd belts out 

“Holding Out for a Hero.” 

In stark contrast to these songs, 

Dodd and Maldonado combine for a 

tender rendition of “Almost Paradise.” 

The two mothers in the show, Hannah 

Elliott and Stephanie Hockaday, 

get the opportunity to showcase their 

voices in “Learning to be Silent.” 

These two women reveal strength and 

discernment, two traits that seem to 

come with motherhood. 

Rob Doyen plays Rev. Shaw Moore, 

who learns valuable lessons and eventually 

admits he was overly harsh. His 

“Can You Find it in Your Heart” near 

the close of the show is an emotional 

moment. 

The cast is completed with a handful 

of smaller roles, including some 

filled by locals. 

Liz Piccoli handles duo roles of 

director and choreographer, encouraging 

the best from each cast member.

David Strom’s work explores and 

reflects on his natural surroundings. 

Layered colors and complex design 

relationships on a two-dimensional 

surface is his playground. Most of 

his work has a border of rectangles 

that surround a central image. This 

predella format was used often 

in altarpieces and folk quilts. One 

of the things art can do is make 

you see things differently. It is his 

hope that after seeing his paintings 

and drawings, people will become 

aware of this universal shape that 

sits humbly on our landscape,

Pearson Lakes Art Center presents “A 

Fiberartist Journey” 

art spanning several 

decades is on display 

in the Weaver and McIlrath 

Galleries at the Pearson 

Lakes Art Center in Okoboji. 

Timothy Arand-McIlrath has 

several pieces, from his very first 

to some of his most recent, up for 

viewing now through Aug. 5. 

“Folks familiar with his work 

will enjoy the unique opportunity 

this time to see the span of artistic 

life, from his first piece to his most 

recent,” said Danielle Clouse-Gast, 

visual arts director at the Pearson 

Lakes Art Center. 

That first piece was block print 

on fabric and was created in 1965. 

“He fell in love with block printing, 

textiles and patterns,” Clouse- 

Gast said. 

Arand-McIlrath would eventually 

add crochet work to his pieces 

incorporating web patterns in both 

2-D and 3-D work. 

“Crochet is considered a traditional 

fiber medium and Tim takes 

this traditional craft into the realm 

of art form,” Clouse-Gast said. 

“Over the span of the exhibit you 

can also see his evolution from 

2-D to 3-D and back, sometimes 

revisiting and recycling old pieces.” 

The most recent piece in the 

exhibit Arand-McIlrath finished 

while on the drive from Arizona to 

set up the show. 

Colors, patterns, texture. It all 

comes alive in the pieces of the 

exhibit. 

“The texture, whether implied or 

actual, draws the viewer in closer,” 

Clouse-Gast said. 

“Throughout the span of work 

it’s evident that he’s been having 

fun the whole time and he’s still 

creating all the time. We actually 

have a few pieces of his in our permanent 

collection.”

roll band Hairball back to the Lakes to 

Arnolds Park Amusement Park’s Preservation 

Plaza at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, 

July 15. 

If you love rock ‘n’ roll then Hairball 

will certainly play some tunes 

that you love. 

They are a tribute band of sorts that 

focuses on bringing some of the biggest 

hits over three decades of rock ‘n’ 

roll to the stage. 

“Vocalists Bobby, Steve and Joe 

Dandy lead the band through a 2-plus 

hour, mind-blowing, and drop-dead 

accurate homage to some of the biggest 

arena acts in the world,” according 

to the band’s website. “Van Halen, 

KISS, Motley Crue, Queen, Journey 

and Aerosmith are but a few of the 

acts fans will see brought to life.” 

The lead vocalists work to authentically 

portray a large variety of iconic 

rockers such as Alice Cooper and 

Gene Simmons. They even feature a 

live python during an Alice Cooper 

song and real fire-breathing during 

the KISS performance. 

The band is celebrating their 17th 

year and their show just continues to 

get bigger. 

“Every day it adds more characters, 

more pyrotechnics, more lights, more 

sound, more props, more surprises, 

more everything,” their website says. 

They take the show on the road 

every week and that show always 

includes a pyrotechnic display, video 

screens, smoke machines, make-up, 

costumes, fire and more. 

They’ve played to crowds that measure 

into the thousands including 

Sturgis Bike Rally where they had an 

audience of 12,000.

students spend their free time

commonly known as Arnolds 

Park. It’s the “hub” from which all the 

many buildings making up the University’s 

beautiful campus are an easy walk 

or boat ride. And as the “hub” it offers

Hotel California was founded in 

1982 when the Eagles disbanded. 

The tribute band has been performing 

and recreating the original Eagles 

sound ever since. 

“Everybody loves the Eagles, and 

Hotel California does a great job of 

bringing everything that the Eagles 

sounded like and the kind of show 

they would bring. They replicate that 

to an absolute T,” Schindler said. 

This will mark the fourth time the 

band has performed at PLAC. 

The show has sold out each 

time. 

“For people who were 

around when the Eagles were 

really popular, they can relive 

that experience with Hotel California,” 

Schindler said. 

The band faithfully showcases 

many of the Eagles’ standout 

hits, including songs like 

“Take it Easy,” “Heartache Tonight,” 

“Love Will Keep Us Alive” and — of 

course — “Hotel California.” 

Hotel California also performs a 

selection of solo works from some 

of the original Eagles band members, 

Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Joe 

Walsh. 

“The quality of the performance itself 

is going to be amazing. The songs 

are definitely going to be familiar 

and great renditions of the originals,” 

Schindler said. “It’s going to be a fun 

show that’s full of entertainment.” 

Hotel California is comprised of 

five musicians who all play a variety 

of instruments. The band members 

include Dicky Lee Dickinson, Wade 

Hogue, Steve Probst, Scott Fronsoe 

and Dan Hill. 

The band performs anywhere from 

150 to 200 times each year, including 

for special corporate events, charity 

benefits, fundraisers, as well as on 

main stages. 

In fact, that’s where Hotel California 

will be performing at PLAC — on 

its main stage — so prepare to sit

People can choose to run in the triathlon, marathon, half-marathon and 

even a 10K. Runner are able to pick just how long they want to run at University 

of Okoboji’s annual Homecoming weekend. 

Running. Cycling. Swimming. 

Some will do just one. Others 

will do all three. 

They’ll all end up in the same place 

during the 40th Annual University of 

Okoboji Homecoming Weekend. 

Marathon, triathlon, triathlon relay, 

half-marathon, and 10K events will 

brings thousands of participants and 

spectators to the Iowa Great Lakes. 

“It’s amazing that it’s our 40th annual 

Homecoming Weekend,” said 

Herman Richter of The Three Sons. 

“Forty years since Paul Williams, Bob 

Rose and Steve Avery came up with 

the idea to start it up. Bob Rose is our 

chairman for life and what a great guy 

to have lead the way.” 

The events start bright and early 

with the marathon departing from 

the State Pier in Arnolds Park at 6 a.m. 

followed by the first leg of the triathlon 

hitting the water at 7 a.m. 

Those who sign up for the halfmarathon 

will get a different starting 

location as they take off from the 

Wahpeton Green Space at 8 a.m. 

The final start time of the day is for 

the 10K, which departs at 9 a.m. from 

the Lake Okoboji Methodist Camp. 

Everyone ends in the same place.

Back at the State Pier in Arnolds Park. 

“The University of Okoboji is where 

fun in life is your degree and this is the 

most fun event of the year,” Richter 

said. “This is a family area and another 

great family event where everybody 

can participate in different events and 

finish at the same place.” 

And what a fun place to finish. 

With the clear waters of West Lake 

Okoboji and the sights and sounds 

of Arnolds Park Amusement Park to 

complete the picture, participants get 

to celebrate their accomplishment 

with family and friends. 

“This event is about the lake and a 

lot more. It’s about the people,” Richter 

said. “Hats off to all the volunteers 

who make it so successful and the 

cooperation of the all the cities and 

law enforcement that make it safe. 

And, of course, a big thanks goes to 

the amusement park for being the 

epicenter of campus and a great place 

for a celebration at the finish line.”

The Rumbles Reunite 

Boji Bay Legacy Park to host concert on Friday, July 14 

It’s time for a reunion. 

The Rumbles are coming together after a 

hiatus to perform a reunion concert at Boji 

Bay Legacy Park on Friday, July 14. The concert 

costs $5 and kicks off at 7 p.m. with the 

band Daybreak, from Omaha, NE, serving as 

the opening act before The Rumbles take the 

stage. 

“We were asked last year by our long time 

friend Tom Tourville if we would consider doing 

a reunion show at Boji Bay in 2017,” said 

drummer and original band member Steve 

Hough. “We, of course, agreed since it was 

always one of our favorite places to play.” 

The Rumbles are an Okoboji favorite and 

have been for decades. 

The band got its start in Council Bluffs, IA, 

when they were still in high school in the 

early 1960s. They began playing professionally 

in 1963 with the lineup of Rich Clayton 

and Joe Brunnworth on guitars, Warren “Bud” 

Phillips on bass guitar and Hough on drums. 

Today, the band is composed of Hough, 

Gayle Adams, Tim Vasquez and Bud Phillips. 

They hit the big time with their song “Jezebel” 

when it came out in 1968. It charted 

on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached #1 in 

several Midwest radio markets. 

Some of their other hits included “Everybody’s 

Talkin,” “14 Years,” “Out of Harmony,” 

“Hey Lenora,” and “Push, Push.” 

The group ended up disbanding in the 

1970s with the decline in popularity of rock 

‘n’ roll dance music. Each of the members 

went their own separate ways. They came 

back together in 1979 for their first reunion 

concert at Omaha’s Peony Park. The concert 

was such a success that the group decided to 

get back together and they continued to perform 

until their final concert in 2015. 

But they just can’t seem to quit. 

While they don’t have any plans for more 

reunion shows, they haven’t counted anything 

out. 

“I’m sure there will eventually be another 

one somewhere,” Hough said when asked 

about other possibilities for reunion concerts. 

But one thing is for sure, they are excited 

about getting back together for The Rumbles 

reunion concert on Friday, July 14, at Boji Bay. 

“Can’t wait! Really looking forward to seeing 

some of the old fans,” Hough said. F

SCIENCE DAY 

Lakeside Lab hosts weekly Tuesday Science Seminars 

Are wolves returning to Iowa? 

How do carp affect lakes and 

how hard are they to manage? 

Did you know that Iowa used to be 

home to woolly mammoths and giant 

sloths? 

These are just a few of the questions 

that you can get answers to at the 

weekly Tuesday Science Seminars at 

Iowa Lakeside Laboratory. The seminars 

are free and open to the public 

and are held each Tuesday at 7:30 

p.m. at Mahan Hall. 

Each Tuesday, a presentation is 

made by a scientist, researcher or 

expert in their field about a specific 

topic. 

“We invite professors, people from 

the DNR and more to present their 

research with our students here and 

with the public,” said Jane Shuttleworth, 

lakeside outreach coordinator. 

“A lot of what we do here is expose 

our students to different things and 

train them to be scientists. Science 

seminars help show that that science 

is a process of trying to figure out 

what the truth is.” 

The events are hosted by the Friends 

of Lakeside Lab and are a long tradition 

in the Lakes. 

“We’ve probably been hosting these 

seminars for over 100 years. The lab 

was founded in 1909 and they’ve always 

been open to the public but it’s 

only recently that we’ve been publicizing 

them more,” said Shuttleworth. 

“My mother and my grandmother 

talked about coming to lectures when 

they were young.” 

They’ll continue to host the events 

every Tuesday evening throughout the 

summer and they have some very interesting 

topics coming up in the next 

few weeks. 

On July 11, DNR fisheries biologist 

Mike Hawkins will give a presentation 

about carp and how hard they are to 

manage when they do get in a lake. 

The next Tuesday, July 18, Katherine 

McCarville will present, “Iowa Evolving 

Landscape: Missing Pleistocene 

Megafauna.” 

“Katherine is doing new research 

on giant sloths and woolly mammoths 

and other giant animals. The 

Iowa landscape was full of these giant 

animals and her research is showing 

evidence for that in the geological 

record,” Shuttleworth said. 

Later in the summer there will be 

a presentation by John Doershuk, an 

archeologist, about evidence of human 

habitation going back thousands 

of years in the area. Emily Ball will be 

giving a presentation about fish stocking 

programs and what size class and 

age it is most economically beneficial 

to be releasing those fish. 

On Aug. 8, there will be a presentation 

that Shuttleworth is sure many 

will be interested in. Thomas Harrington 

will be giving a presentation 

on the rise of Burr Oak Blight and 

how to cope with it. 

“We’re going to have to take reservations 

for that presentation. I’m sure 

we’ll run out of room,” Shuttleworth 

said. “A lot of people are worried about 

their burr oak trees so I think this presentation 

will be very popular.” 

But whether you are interested in 

fish, archeology, burr oak blight or 

something else, all of the Tuesday Science 

Seminars have one really important 

goal. 

“We always hope that when people 

leave they have a deeper appreciation 

and understanding of the natural 

world and how it works,” Shuttleworth 

said. “We also want people 

to have a deeper appreciation for 

science and how difficult it is to conduct 

research. It’s easy to ask a question, 

but getting the answers can be 

difficult.” F

Backcountry is a land boat. 

Or, a four-wheeled motorcycle, 

whichever way you want to look at it. 

Those are the ways Matt Den 

Herder, sales manager at Ver Hoef Automotive 

in Sioux Center, described 

the vehicle, but after driving the Jeep, 

I second him. 

Before I experienced driving the Jeep, 

Den Herder and his team took off the 

four doors and top, which he said takes 

about 15 minutes with two people. 

“The very first time you do it, it 

takes a little bit longer, but if you have 

the right tools and you have somebody 

to help you, it goes faster,” he 

said. “The top is about 150 pounds, so 

it is a two-person job.” 

The ride is smooth, although a bit 

breezy. That was fine with me, though, 

as I got a better view of my surroundings 

and a greater chance to view 

nature at its finest. 

Not only is the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 

Backcountry great for driving 

in town and on highways, but it also 

can be used for off-roading, something 

I didn’t experience, but would 

love to try in the future. 

The vehicle is equipped with allterrain 

tires, among other features. 

Power windows, power locks, navigation 

radio, Sirius XM, heated seats 

and a leather interior are some of the 

features the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 

Backcountry offers. 

“They aren’t really built for luxury, 

so that they have that stuff in them is 

pretty good,” Den Herder said. 

The safety features include airbags 

and a roll cage, and the vehicle is rated 

for a gas mileage registering 16 miles 

in the city and 20 on the highway. 

“They’re a lot of fun,” Den Herder 

said.

Family Nature Night set for July 10 

Gather your most competitive, 

outdoorsy family members for 

the next Family Nature Night. 

The family-friendly event will take 

place 6 p.m. Monday, July 10, in Kenue 

Park in Okoboji and will focus on 

camping skills. 

“We’ll set up an entire tournament 

of tent races,” said Kiley Roth, Dickinson 

County Conservation community 

relations coordinator. “Families will 

go against each other to see who can 

put up a tent the fastest, so bring the 

ringers in your family. The family that 

wins will get a special prize.” 

When not pitching a tent, try your 

hand at casting and try to reel in a faux 

fish which will garner the talented 

fisherman a prize. All ages will also 

enjoy creating a camping-themed craft 

to take home. 

At the end of the night, gather 

around the fire rings in Kenue Park to 

make s’mores and tell stories around 

the campfire. 

“At the conservation board we stress 

the importance of getting outside as 

well as creating memories as a family, 

so Family Nature Night is the perfect 

place to do both,” Roth said.

with a Disc Golf Challenge Monday,

your hand at the fast-growing sport on

Bike Ride Around Spirit Lake is for everyone. Avid cyclers training for The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride 

Across Iowa and families looking for a fun activity to participate in together all are welcome. “This is a ride for cyclists 

of any skill level,” said Blain Andera, executive director of the Spirit Lake Chamber of Commerce. 

The event will kick off 7-9 a.m. Saturday, July 8, with registration along Hill Avenue in downtown Spirit Lake.

LIFELIGHT 

Every year, Sioux Falls plays host to the world’s 

largest Christian music festival: LifeLight. 

This year, though, some of that magic will be 

heading towards the Iowa Great Lakes. 

On Saturday, July 8, an all new LifeLight Okoboji 

Christian Festival will be held at Boji Bay 

Legacy Park in Milford. The free event will start 

around 3 p.m. and run until 10 p.m. People of all 

ages are invited to come out to the event. 

HULL SUMMERFEST 

Hull Summerfest boasts the area’s largest candy parade. 

That may come as no surprise, as the Sioux 

County community plays host to the Foreign Candy Co. 

From Rips licorice and EIFFEL bonbons chew candy 

to Big Fat Hisse Fit Gummy Snakes and Yardstick Bubble 

Gum, the event’s parade is bound to quell anyone’s 

sweet tooth. While the candy parade may be what Hull 

Summerfest is built around, the event — which runs 

Wednesday-Saturday, July 5-8 — has many offerings 

for the entire family.
