Many of you hopped on a plane or drove 

across the country to enjoy Southwest 

Florida’s spectacular beaches. You’ve 

packed the sunscreen and swimsuits 

for the opportunity to dig your feet 

into the soft white-sand and enjoy the 

warm sparkling Gulf of Mexico waters. 

The Paradise Coast beaches will not 

disappoint. Stretching from Bonita Springs in the north to Marco Island in the south, 

Naples’ beaches offer locals and visitors a variety of activities and atmospheres. 

Collier County requires residents, non-residents, and visitors to pay for beach 

parking. Visitors, and non-residents may purchase an annual $50 beach parking 

permit as an alternative to paying the metered or daily beach parking fee. Visit

Sea Turtle Nesting Season 

From May through August hundreds of sea 

turtles lay eggs on Naples’ and Marco Island’s 

beaches. Hatchlings emerge through October 

to make their way to the water. Please do 

not approach or disturb nesting females or 

hatchlings. Remember to fill in any holes dug 

on the beach, ensuring they have a clear path 

to make it safely to the Gulf waters.

Stroll the boardwalk or ride the tram 

to access a 3,200-foot stretch of soft,

available. Great spot for shelling. Parking 

is $8 per vehicle for non-beach parking 

permit holders. 

Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park

A 166-acre park offering an 

opportunity to swim, scuba dive, kayak, 

or fish along more than one mile of beach 

rated as one of the best in the United 

States. Easy access to the beach from five 

parking lots via a system of connecting 

trails and boardwalks. Grills, picnic areas, 

bicycle racks, restrooms with wheelchair 

access, and outdoor showers are available. 

Admission is $4-6 per vehicle, $2 for 

bicyclists or pedestrians. 

Dog Beach Park 

8800 Estero Blvd., Fort Myers Beach 

Give your pet an off-the-leash run 

on the only county-owned beach where 

pets are allowed. Doggie shower and 

disposal stations are available. Owners 

are required to clean up after their pets. 

Maximum of two dogs per person allowed. 

A coastal tideland, therefore the size of the 

beach varies on the water level and tide. 

Parking is free. 

Lovers Key State Park & Beaches

Four barrier islands offering 

biking, wildlife viewing, fishing, and shelling 

in a pristine setting. Manatees, dolphins, 

coastal birds, and even bald eagles are 

often seen. The two-mile long beach is 

accessible by boardwalk or tram. Kayak, 

canoe, pedal boat, stand-up paddleboards, 

beach chairs, and umbrella rentals are 

available. Park entrance admission fee 

varies between $2 and $8 depending 

on the number of occupants and mode 

of transport. 

Naples Beach & Fishing Pier

A community landmark 

and hub for activity or a popular 

gathering place to watch a magnificent 

Gulf of Mexico sunset. Pier fishing is 

available without a license 24-hours 

a day. Amenities include restrooms with 

showers, concession stand with a covered 

eating area, beach supplies, bait shop, 

volleyball nets, and handicapped beach 

wheelchair access. 

South Marco Beach Access 

South Collier Blvd., Marco Island 

One of two public beach 

access points on Marco Island – and 

generally the less busy of the two. A 

great place for families to go shelling, 

beach fishing, or dolphin watching. 

Parking and restrooms are available 

on Swallow Avenue and is a short walk 

across South Collier Boulevard to the 

beach. Parking is $8 per vehicle for 

non-beach parking permit holders. 

Tigertail Beach 

400 Hernando Drive, Marco Island 

White sand, shelling, tidal 

pool exploration, and a playground 

make this a great family beach and one 

of the most popular in the area. It is also 

one of the best birding sites in Southwest 

Florida. Amenities include restrooms, 

boardwalks, picnic area, playground, 

and concession stand offering beach 

equipment rentals, food, and drinks. 

Parking is $8 per vehicle for non-beach 

parking permit holders. 

Vanderbilt Beach Park 

280 Vanderbilt Beach Road, Naples 

Gorgeous white sand, great 

shelling, and bird watching. Amenities 

include easy handicap accessibility to 

the beach, concessions offering beach 

equipment rentals and snacks. There 

is a parking garage just west of The 

Ritz-Carlton hotel entrance. The Naples 

Trolley Tour also makes a stop at the 

beach. Bicycle racks are located close 

to the beach. Parking is $8 per vehicle 

for non-beach parking permit holders. 

Naples and Marco Island have more than 14 miles of beaches along the Gulf of 

Mexico. Shelling on Marco’s beaches rival that of Sanibel Island and other popular 

shelling spots. Challenge your kids to find starfish, egg casings, sea glass, sand 

dollars, coral, and more while exploring the white sandy beaches. They will enjoy 

exploring the coastal environment and delight in having found a natural treasure 

to take home. And, who doesn’t love beach combing? One important caution: 

Make sure the shells your kids collect are not live (inhabited). Aside from the 

surprise you’ll get back home, it’s illegal to remove living shells from the beaches. 

This includes sand dollars, starfish, and sea urchins.

save a family member or your life. 

Don’t Swim 

Against a Rip Current 

If a rip current is pulling you out to sea, swimming against 

it will only make you tired. Instead, swim out of the current 

parallel to shore. Once out, swim back to shore. 

Know The Signs of Drowning 

Drowning can be a quiet process. No breathing means 

no calling for help. Because humans instinctively push 

their arms into the water, a drowning victim may not 

be able to wave for help. So, whether someone is flailing 

frantically for help or quietly bobbing at the surface 

with their mouth submerged and arms extended 

horizontally, ask them if they’re alright, if they cannot 

answer, help them or get help quickly. 

Protect Your Neck 

To avoid serious neck injuries never dive into unknown 

waters. Remember “first time, feet first”.

Shelling in 

Naples and Marco Island

The beaches around Naples, Marco Island, and the 10,000 Islands 

provide some of the best shelling opportunities in the USA, attracting 

shell enthusiasts from all over the world. Sugar-white sandy beaches 

are bordered by the clear shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico 

where gentle waves regularly deposit some amazing seashells onto 

the shore. 

Expect to find lion’s paws, moon shells, coquinas, clams, cockles, 

limpets, cones, murexes, shapely lightning whelks, pointed fighting 

conchs, and ridged scallops, just some of the 400 shell species found 

around Naples and Marco Island. In addition to beautiful shells, 

you may be lucky enough to find dried starfish, sea urchins, 

armored horseshoe crab shells, and whole sand dollars just waiting 

to be discovered. 

Shelling Dos and Don’ts 

Take a stroll along the tideline with a bucket or bag and you are likely to find all types and sizes of pretty shells. If you are 

serious about shelling, then you may want to invest in a shell identifying card or book, a net bag, and a scoop for uncovering 

semi-buried shells. You’ll also need sun lotion and a hat to avoid sunburn as you will quickly lose track of time as you move 

from one captivating seashell to the next, hunting for treasures. 

You need to inspect each shell before dropping into your bag as it is illegal to take live shells from the beach. You can clearly 

see if there is an inhabitant in the shell. If so, just return it to the water, even if you found it above the waterline. If you find a 

sand dollar, turn it over and make sure it does not have tiny feelers on the underside that move when touched. 

Tips for Top Shelling 

Low tide is the time to find the best shells and the lowest 

tides are when there is a full moon or a new moon. You will 

also find more shells cast ashore after a storm. Quieter 

beaches naturally provide better pickings for discerning 

shell collectors. Clam Pass Park, Naples is reached by a 

boardwalk and has excellent shelling. Another hidden 

gem for shell collecting is Barefoot Beach Preserve in North 

Naples.

the shells for a few hours in a 50:50 solution of bleach to 

kill any bacteria then rinse and inspect each shell. Remove 

barnacles or debris with an old toothbrush or toothpick. 

To restore natural color and shine, wipe the shells with 

baby oil or coat with satin varnish. Sand dollars can be 

strengthened by painting them with a coating of white 

glue and water and leaving to dry and harden. Now you 

can put your treasures out on display, singly or in a jar, or 

set them aside for a craft project. 

There are plenty of creative ideas for conchologists 

(seashell collectors) on the internet. You can make shell 

animals, decorate box lids and picture frames, use in 

jewelry-making, add to potpourri, use as candle holders, 

add an airplant, glue to toothpicks for spearing hors 

d’oeuvres, or string together as a delightful wind chime. 

Who knows, your shelling in Naples and Marco Island could 

inspire a whole new hobby!

Just down the street from Palm 

Cottage, Naples Oldest House, is an 

even older structure—Naples Pier. 

Built in 1888 at the end of 12th Avenue 

South, the pier was an essential part 

of settling and developing Naples 

as building materials and supplies all 

came by boat to the area. 

The Naples Pier is very easy to reach from Gulf Shore Blvd. South or 12th Avenue South where there are plenty of parking 

spaces. It is also within easy walking distance from the shops and restaurants on Third Street South and 5th Avenue South 

in Downtown Naples. 

Naples’ Pier History 

Prior to the completion of the Tamiami Trail (Hwy 41) in 1928, the only way for outsiders to reach Naples was by boat, 

making the pier an essential part of early Naples infrastructure. Originally, narrow gauge rail tracks ran the length of the pier to 

move freight and hotel baggage that regularly arrived in the early 1900s. 

Naples’ first Post Office was built on the pier, although it was destroyed in a fire in 1912. The pier itself survived the fire but 

was damaged by hurricanes in 1910, 1926 and 1960. It had to be substantially rebuilt after each disaster. Still standing today, 

this historic landmark is now used as a fishing pier and received a well-deserved facelift during the summer of 2015.

The Naples Pier stretches out 1,000 feet into 

the Gulf of Mexico. Ideal for a breezy stroll, the 

pier’s modern amenities include restrooms and a 

concession stand halfway along selling bait, food, 

and beach supplies. The concession is open 

from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., so don’t be caught off 

guard if you arrive for an evening’s fishing. 

Nearby, on the 10-mile-long Municipal Beach, 

there are volleyball nets and a very unique 

feature. You’ll find a stand of child-size lifejackets 

available for free loan to keep youngsters safe as they play in the surf. Simply borrow one, then return it at the end of 

your visit.

Fishing from the Naples Pier makes it a popular gathering place in all seasons. It’s worth noting that fishing enthusiasts do 

not need a fishing license to fish from the pier as it has a bulk fishing license covering all users. Keen locals recommend light 

spinning gear using live shrimp as bait 

to catch snook, mackerel, pompano, 

and sea trout. 




Even non-fishing enthusiasts can 

enjoy the pier as it is the perfect place 

to enjoy a brilliant Florida sunset over

at the end of each sunny day. You’ll 

find ungainly pelicans, egrets, and 

gulls sitting on the wooden balustrade

There’s a reason why Florida is known as the “Sunshine 

State”. This subtropical state has year-round sunshine making 

it gorgeous for a vacation, but it can catch visitors unawares 

if they are not taking some precautions. Dehydration, heat 

exhaustion, sunburn, and sunstroke can spoil your vacation, 

yet they are very easy to avoid by following our Florida 

Sunshine Survival Tips. 

Come Aboard

Wear Cool Loose Clothing The best 

way to stay cool is by wearing clothing that is loose fitting 

and preferably made of cotton or natural fabrics. Loose 

dresses, shirts, tops, and shorts are preferable to jeans and 

tight-fitting clothing if you are to stay looking and feeling 

cool and comfortable. Swap shoes and sneakers for open 

sandals. If you still feel hot and sweaty, use a handheld 

fan. When the body sweats it loses fluid, salt, and minerals. 

Water depletion can cause a dry mouth, headaches, and fainting while symptoms of salt depletion include muscle 

spasms, cramps, and vomiting. 

Don’t Overdo the Sunshine Heat stroke technically occurs when the body’s core temperature 

reaches 105°F or above. It can cause nausea, confusion, disorientation, seizures, fainting, cramps, and shallow breathing 

as the body struggles to cool itself. Anyone showing these symptoms should be treated as a medical emergency. Remove 

any unnecessary clothing, cool the body by bathing with a cool wash cloth or put them in a cool air-conditioned room and 

seek medical advice. Give the sufferer plenty of cool drinks of water and monitor their symptoms carefully. 

Lather up with SPF Sunscreen Frequently Most Florida visitors diligently apply 

sunscreen first thing in the morning when they hit the beach. However, sunscreen does not last all day. The Sun Protection 

Factor (SPF) indicates how much longer you can stay in the sun so SPF 15 means that a person who burns in 5 minutes is 

theoretically protected for 75 minutes. However, it is recommended that you reapply sun lotion every two hours and after 

you have been in the pool or sea. Sunscreen does not just prevent your skin from burning; it also screens out harmful ultra 

violet rays that can cause skin cancer. UVA rays cause wrinkles and premature aging, while UVB rays burn the skin, so choose 

a good quality sunscreen that keeps them both at bay.

beer or alcoholic drinks can actually leave you more dehydrated than ever. If you drink a glass of beer your body will actually

will become as alcohol affects the body’s fluid levels. Eating salty snacks is another way to cause the body to lose fluid from 

its cells, and sugar-high sodas and sports drinks create a similar problem. You need to drink pure water throughout the day 

to counter dehydration, and avoid sweet or alcoholic drinks until the cooler evening. A tip for measuring whether you are 

drinking enough is to check you are visiting the bathroom as frequently as usual.

Whether you enjoy birdwatching to spot new species, or to 

capture them on photographs, Florida has plenty of great 

spots for finding flocks of birds. Many bird species spend 

the winter in Florida. Others stop to rest on Florida’s lakes 

and marshes en route to warmer destinations along the Gulf 

migration flyway. Southwest Florida has some of America’s 

top refuges for spotting rare and unusual birds, from 

waders and ducks to impressive birds of prey. 

The best time to spot perching birds in their natural habitat 

is during the early hours after sunrise or just before sunset. If 

you want to get upclose, wear light colored clothing that blends in with nature and does not rustle as you walk. Move slowly 

and stay quiet to get the best results, whether you are hiding or watching from a natural lookout point.

Stay away from nests, especially if they contain eggs or young birds. Never touch a nest or remove an egg as the parent may 

desert the nest, leaving the young birds to starve.

Located on the northwest coast of Marco Island, Tigertail 

Beach is an excellent spot for viewing birds in the tidal lagoon 

and mangrove swamps. Shorebirds such as plovers 

(piping, Wilson’s and snowy), terns, red knots, and other unusual 

species are commonly seen. Falcons, ospreys, bald eagles, 

and pelicans can be seen diving for fish off the beach. 

The state-owned Critical Wildlife Area has many nesting 

colonies in spring and the area is particularly busy during 

the migration season. 

Different bird species can be found at Audubon Corkscrew 

Swamp Sanctuary, which is 23 miles east of Bonita Springs 

and North Naples. This inland wildlife sanctuary covers a 

range of different habitats which can be reached from the 

2.25 mile boardwalk. As well as the usual herons and egrets, 

visitors may spot barred owls, red-shouldered hawks, warblers, 

and colorful painted buntings. The wood stork rookery 

is popular during the breeding season and there are always 

plenty of volunteer naturalists on hand to help identify 

different species. 

Part of the Florida Birding Trail, Lovers Key State Park is 

situated between Fort Myers Beach and Bonita Springs. You 

need to allow a few hours to enjoy this scenic spot, which has mangrove swamps, hardwood and mixed forests, beaches, 

dunes, and mudflats on Estero Bay. Visitors can go birdwatching by boat, bicycle, or on foot and are likely to be rewarded 

with sightings of red-shouldered hawks, osprey, bald eagles, roseate spoonbills, snowy plovers, terns, and reddish egrets. 

As you can see, there are so many great birdwatching locations in Southwest Florida. I hope you get to enjoy them all! 

Florida is a hotspot for fishing, and no wonder! Along with saltwater fishing in the warm Gulf waters, it also offers canals, 

rivers, lakes, and excellent backwater fishing. For the uninitiated, backwater fishing refers to fishing in the network of tidal 

creeks, bays, and mangroves that this coast is riddled with. 

West Coast fishing calls for smaller, lighter rods 

than other areas of Florida. Experts recommend 

a rod length of 6.5 to 7.5 feet and lures from 

1/8 to 1/2 an ounce for successful fishing in the 

area. Fish tend to hang out wherever there are 

structures, rocks, and oyster bars. The area 

has many such places along with artificial reefs 

guaranteeing some nice catches. 

Southwest Florida’s coastline has hundreds of 

islands and thousands of miles of shoreline 

providing rich seagrass beds that attract all 

manner of saltwater fish. Thousands of acres of 

wetlands are under the protection of state or 

federal law, particularly around Charlotte Harbor, 

which is one of Florida’s largest estuaries. Clean

whose roots provide a natural nursery for young fish stock. Other coastal areas are 

designated aquatic preserves with strict regulations controlling these pristine waters

Many endangered and protected animal species reside in 

Southwest Florida’s unique landscape including the American 

alligator, Florida panther, black bear, West Indian manatee,

Southwest Florida Marine Life 

The Gulf waters around Southwest Florida are teaming with amazing marine life. 

Two of the most popular residents are bottlenose dolphins and the West Indian 

manatee. A cruise or kayak trip is a great way to view dolphins or manatees. 

Dolphins love to leap and play in the bow waves or chase the wake of boats. 

You can often see manatees grazing on sea grasses in shallow waters of the 

areas mangrove-laden estuaries. Sometimes when manatees see kayaks on the 

surface, they will come in close to get a good look. Local guides will give you the 

best chance of catching a glimpse of a manatee in the wild. 

Stingrays frequently can be found in the warm shallow waters of the Gulf of 

Mexico during the months of May through October. They come close to shore 

in search of food and bury themselves in the sand. You don’t want to step on 

a stingray – the result could be a painful sting. In order to prevent this, it is 

important to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering the water of Southwest 

Florida’s beaches. By shuffling your feet across the sandy bottom you can alert 

the stingray of your presence, they will uncover themselves and swim away. Stingrays don’t want to be stepped on 

anymore than you want to be stung! What should you do if you happen to step on a stingray and get stung? Head to 

the lifeguard stand when possible. If there isn’t one available try a nearby home, hotel, or restaurant. First aid for stingray 

stings involves flushing the wound with fresh water if possible and soaking the affected area in hot water (as hot as can 

be tolerated without causing burns). Most lifeguard stands have buckets and hot water on hand for stingray accidents. 

If the victim shows any signs of an allergic reaction – DIAL 911.

Unique Wildlife (continued) 

During the summer months, mother sea turtles 

emerge from the Gulf of Mexico during the late 

night hours. They slowly plow their way through 

the sand, hollow out a nest and lay around 100 

ping-pong ball sized eggs. She will cover the 

eggs to protect and hide them from harm, and 

then crawl back out to sea. Each turtle nest 

will remain quiet for about two months as the 

baby turtles grow and mature. Instinct drives 

baby turtles to dig out of the sand that has 

been protecting them and follow the moonlight 

reflected on the water that will lead them 

to the sea. This event will happen over and 

over into October until all of the viable eggs 

have hatched. Visitors staying in properties on 

the beachfront should turn outside lights off at 

night as the light confuses baby turtles. When 

your day at the beach is over, remember to 

fill in any holes dug on the beach before you 

leave, this will ensure that the hatchlings have 

a clear path through the sand and help them make it safely to the Gulf waters. Watching sea turtles can be an incredible 

experience for the whole family. Following the guidelines above will ensure that many families will enjoy the experience 

for years to come.

meat is white and mild-flavored. The dark

Amberjack – Nice off-white flaky fish, with

oil content. Scrumptious broiled, 

sautéed or baked in parchment. 

Sheepshead – White, firm, flavorful

fish with a lean, firm texture. Tasty
