What’s New in Marinette
Menekaunee Harbor Project
The Menominee River
has always been one of the
great strengths of Marinette,
and the city recognized
this when it acquired the
former Jozaitis Distributing
company on the shores of
Menekaunee Harbor and
turned it into a picturesque
boat launch on the riverside.
The new launch
features parking for vehicles
and trailers, access to a
three-slip boat launch
with two 30-foot docks,
a 100-foot walkway for
staging along a retaining
wall connected to the
information center at the
northeast end of the site
and a separate launch site
for kayaks and canoes.
A pavilion near the
water with restroom
facilities and a fishcleaning
station set back
to the northwest is also
planned. The site is lit by a
combination of tall street
lights in the parking lot
and shorter, solar-powered
Bollard lights along
the sidewalks. Trees
and a berm soften
the transition of
the park space into
the industrial space
behind, where the
Marinette coal docks
and Waupaca Foundry
are located, and a
storm water collection
site features native
plants.
Members of the
Menominee Indian Tribe
of Wisconsin performed a
wild rice planting ceremony
in the harbor prior to
construction, in honor of
the Menominee River, the
birthplace of the tribe.
