What’s New in Marinette
Menekaunee Harbor Project
The Menominee River
has always been one of the
great strengths of Marinette,
and the city recognized
this when it acquired the
former Jozaitis Distributing
company on the shores of
Menekaunee Harbor and
turned it into a picturesque
boat launch on the riverside.
The new launch
features parking for vehicles
and trailers, access to a
three-slip boat launch
with two 30-foot docks,
a 100-foot walkway for
staging along a retaining
wall connected to the
information center at the
northeast end of the site
and a separate launch site
for kayaks and canoes.
A pavilion near the
water with restroom
facilities and a fishcleaning
station set back
to the northwest is also
planned. The site is lit by a
combination of tall street
lights in the parking lot
and shorter, solar-powered
Bollard lights along
the sidewalks. Trees
and a berm soften
the transition of
the park space into
the industrial space
behind, where the
Marinette coal docks
and Waupaca Foundry
are located, and a
storm water collection
site features native
plants.
Members of the
Menominee Indian Tribe
of Wisconsin performed a
wild rice planting ceremony
in the harbor prior to
construction, in honor of
the Menominee River, the
birthplace of the tribe.
REC Center
“The
Building a new
recreation center has
been a discussion in
Marinette for more
than a decade, and
the city began the
realization of this
dream recently
with the planning
of the ambitious
community project.
Somerville Inc. and U.P. Engineers & Architects Inc. laid
out the plans for the $16 million center in 2016, featuring
three main buildings: A community hall, consisting of space
City of Marinette
is moving forward
with plans to build! The city has
committed $16 million to this project.
The 114k square foot facility is designed
to support various sports activities for
every age group. It will also have space
available for concerts, trade shows,
meeting rooms and more! ”
for four separate
courts equipped
for basketball,
volleyball or
tennis; A turf field
surrounded by a
running track an
eighth of a mile
long; And an ice
rink with bleachers
seating equipped
with plenty of storage and
directly adjacent to locker
room areas. The three
buildings are connected by
a main hallway with meeting
rooms, concession stands,
seating areas and plenty of
natural light.
The building site is
located directly to the south
of Marinette High School on
Pierce Avenue. Fundraising
efforts through the M&M
Area Community Foundation
brought in support from all
corners of the region, with
local businesses and private
citizens graciously donating
to the cause. Bay Area Medical
Center (BAMC) of Marinette
and Aurora BayCare Medical
Center of Green Bay were
given the honor of christening
the building: “Community
MARINETTE HISTORICAL LOGGING MUSEUM
Stephenson Island, 715-732-0831
By Frank Lauerman
Marinette’s Museum is located on Stephenson
Island, a City park, and just off the US Highway 41
Interstate Bridge in downtown.
In addition to our unique outdoor horse-drawn
log display, we feature an authentic 1888 Sawmill
as well as a diorama of a complete lumbering
camp. Our museum is a history lesson of days
gone by as well as our local history. Our Gift Shop
has the only selection of local souvenir postcards,
magnets and books about our history and QUEEN
MARINETTE. Her competence will show you why she
was so much more than the operator of her Trading
Post. Our volunteer tour guides will take you through,
including an example display of her business. We are the
‘LOCAL TREASURE CHEST.’
Who
was Queen
Marinette?
Enjoy it with us!
Both Marinette County
and the City of
Marinette are named
for a shrewd business
woman who lived
a “colorful” life and
bore a “royal” name.
“Queen” Marinette
was not of royal blood
but the granddaughter
of an Indian chief and
the daughter of a French fur
trader named Bartland or
Bartholomew Chevalier.
Marinette Chevalier, whose
first name means “Little
Marie” in French, is believed
to have been in 1793 at
Post Lake, a tributary of the
wandering Peshtigo River,
in what is now known as
Langlade County.
Very little is known of her
early years. Some say her
stately bearing merited
her the nickname of “Queen”.
Others speculate that the name
“Marinette” is a contraction
of Marie Antoinette and that
Queen Marinette bears the
name of the ill-fated consort to
Louis XVI of France. The other
Marie Antoinette was beheaded
in Paris the year that Queen
Marinette was born.
Marinette was wed to John
Jacobs Jr., a Canadian fur trader,
who lived at Mackinac but
bartered with tribes throughout
the region. He had been in her
father’s business as a partner.
It is said that Jacobs abandoned
his wife on one of their trips to
the trading post at Mackinac,
possibly in 1823. Marinette
wasted no time finding a
common-law husband, another
fur trader named William
Farnsworth, by some accounts
her husband’s business partner.

The two returned to the area,
with Farnsworth dividing his
time between the settlement
at Green Bay and the
Menominee River location.
Farnsworth was one of the
two builders of the FIRST
sawmill on the Menominee
River, which left Marinette
to run the trading post on
her own, which she did with
wisdom and shrewdness,
according to most
recollections. She was well
known for her charity work.
While Farnsworth’s mill failed,
his wife thrived. Her home,
several doors east of Hattie
Street Bridge on what is now
called Riverside Avenue in
the City of Marinette, was
a “social” center. It is said
here, both Indian and traders
danced to the fiddle music
played by a man known
HISTORY OF MARINETTE
as Joe Bart, and another
musician named Joe
Therriault.
During her later years, the
business-savvy Marinette
owned a good deal of land in
the heart of town, including
much of Riverside Avenue
and downtown. Some of her
parcels were eventually
sold to
make
way for the
Victorian mansions of
the lumber barons who
ruled the local economy.
She was buried in the old
Allouez Cemetery until her
grave was moved to the
city to which she gave
her name.
There is a beautiful decorated
crypt of her, placed inside
the Marinette Mausoleum
on Mary Street.
Marinette, WI – For the first time competitive walleye
Championship of the 2017 Cabela’s National Walleye Tour.
The tournament is sponsored by the City of Marinette and
Marinette County Tourism featuring top qualifying walleye
fishermen throughout the United States.
City of Marinette Mayor Steve Genisot, comments on
the NWT Championship: “We welcome the professional
anglers, their families and NWT crew, media and
spectators. We are proud of our community,
knowing that it will provide a memorable
experience for all. We know the fishing is good
and we hope for a successful fishing event.
Come to Marinette and enjoy our hospitality!”
Marinette
selected to host Cabela’s
National Walleye Tournament
“We are very excited to be a part of this
national championship fishing tournament and will show the public all the attractions that
Marinette has to offer its visitors.” said Butch Kostreva, Marinette County Tourism Director.
“This just goes to show that the City of Marinette’s Green Bay waters are one of the hot beds
for walleye fishing not only on a state level but in the nation.”
The Marinette event begins with tournament registration from 2-4 p.m. at a meeting
and banquet on Tuesday, August 15th. Anglers will attempt to qualify by launching out
on Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 7 a.m. from the Menekaunee Harbor Boat
Launch. Then Friday the 18th, the Top 10 qualifying anglers will launch out for the National
Championship. Each NWT tournament features over 100% payback, fully rigged Ranger
Boats, plus cash is guaranteed for first place in the event. The tournament circuit also
to watch the action unfold from each event throughout the season. Airing on multiple
networks, the National Walleye Tour will be seen on FOX Sports, and Pursuit Channel, as
well as the NBC Sports Network. “This just proves that Marinette County and the City of
Marinette is Northeastern Wisconsin’s diamond in the rough and one of the top Wisconsin
destinations for your tourism activities, fishing and outdoor fun.” says Butch Kostreva.
Fincantieri
Marinette Marine
Fincantieri Marinette Marine was
founded in 1942 along the Menominee
River in Marinette to meet America’s
growing demand for naval construction.
From humble beginnings with a contract
to build five wooden barges, Marinette
Marine has grown into a world-class
shipbuilder, having designed and built
more than 1,500 vessels. The company
currently employs over 2,000 people.
After a $73.5 million capital
expansion program from its Italian
parent company Fincantieri,
the company
now has the
capacity to
simultaneously build
six Littoral Combat
Ships (LCS) in serial
production for
the U.S. Navy in
conjunction with
Lockheed
Martin
and
Gibbs & Cox.
In 2016, the U.S.
Navy ordered
construction of
LCS-25, the future
U.S.S. Marinette, to
honor the city and
its contributions
to the naval fleet.
Waupaca Foundry
In 1955, Clifford Schwenn purchased
Pearson Foundry Machine Shop and
changed the name to Waupaca Foundry
Inc. During this period the foundry
employed 13 people and poured 2-3
tons daily. Today, Waupaca Foundry has
a melt capacity of 10,000 metric tons per
day. The company has since been going
strong for more than 60 years.
Waupaca Foundry Plant 4 is located
on 40 acres in Marinette. The 327,000
square foot building employs more than
750 people.
Industry
Tyco-Johnson
Controls
Marinette’s chemicals company Ansul
began in 1912. It remained independent
until 1978, when it was acquired by
Wormald International, an Australian
corporation. Wormald was in turn
acquired by Tyco International in 1990.
Ansul now exists as a brand of the
Tyco Fire Protection segment of Tyco
International, which merged with
Johnson Controls in 2016.
The company
changed its
name over the
years, but always
kept Ansul as part of
its name. Today, it
manufactures fire
suppression
systems and
extinguishers
and offers
fire training.
Today, the ANSUL
Fire Technology
Center and Center
of Excellence in
Marinette houses one
of the most extensive
fire research and
testing facilities
in the world.
KSU
The KS Kolbenschmidt facility in Marinette
was founded in 1944 as an aluminum
piston manufacturer. Today it is a leading
manufacturer of aluminum and steel
pistons for internal combustion engines
of passenger cars, medium and heavy
duty applications, and is well known
for its advanced piston design and
manufacturing technology for gasoline
and diesel engines.
one of renovations to the building and
phase two has already begun. The four-
UW-Marinette
University of Wisconsin – Marinette
is one of 13 campuses in the UW-
System. UW-Marinette has a total of
465 students with a student to faculty
ratio of 17:1. College freshmen and
sophomores study liberal arts or
general education associate degrees
that transfer to all UW-Colleges, as
well as many others that have signed
transfer agreements. In April of 2015,
phase project’s purpose is to rework
the building, which will renovate
about 67,000 square feet of the
existing space and adding close to
14,500 square feet onto the school.
Additions to the campus include
new and expanded space for Health
Sciences, Business Information
Technology, General Studies and
Trades & Engineering areas of study.
University partnered in order to
give students more options to
pursue a bachelor’s degree.
UW-Marinette’s vision is to
nurture the strengths of both
its small campus, as well as its
large outlook. The university
is for people of all ages and
backgrounds who want to
The money for the new
facility comes from the 2015
referendum in NWTC’s district,
encompassing Door, Brown,
Marinette, Florence, Kewaunee and
Oconto counties, which netted
the colleges $66.5 million for
renovations to the Marinette,
Green Bay and Sturgeon
Bay campuses.
enrich their personal and
community lives through
education – taking their first
steps beyond high school, or
exploring later career paths,
UW-Colleges will always strive
to bring close connections
among students, faculty and
community members.
MARINETTE - Bay Area Medical Center is in
the midst of building a brand-new hospital
facility on 90 acres of land it purchased off
University Drive in Marinette.
Groundbreaking was held in May 2016
for the new $135 million project, which
BAMC has partnered with Aurora Health
Care to construct.
The site will become home to a new,
three-story hospital with an expanded
Emergency Department, a Regional
Cancer Care Center, a new Women’s
Health Center, private patient rooms,
cardiology services and physician’s
offices. At the same time the new hospital
is being built, the Aurora Bay Area Health
Center on Old Peshtigo Road is being
remodeled to accommodate offices
for primary care physicians, X-ray and
laboratory services.
At the groundbreaking ceremony
in 2016, Tony Furton, chairman of the
BAMC board of directors, said the
board had spent “nearly a decade”
working toward this day.
Health Care
Bay Area Medical Center
“Good things come to those who wait,” he said,
providing a historical look back on the creation of the
original Marinette General Hospital in the 1930s and
the major renovations that followed in the 1970s.
Furton said plans for major changes
discussed in 2007 were derailed with the
recession and revisited in 2011.
Furton said that bonding has helped pay for
some of the project, but the majority of the funding
has come from BAMC and Aurora. There is no cost
to taxpayers for the construction.
“As everybody knows, the health care landscape
is changing rapidly. Our board is very proud of the
way we have anticipated those changes,”
Furton said. “We’re confident
in the
decisions that we have made and are
excited about what the future holds for the
community.”
The final steel beam was put in place
at the facility in December, in a ceremony
called “topping out,” when ironworkers
from Boldt Co., the general contractor,
secured the last beam at the highest point
of the construction project.
Marinette General Hospital, which
was built in the 1930s, is the current home
of BAMC, a nonprofit entity that was formed in 1985
with the merger of MGH with Menominee County-
Lloyd Hospital.
Boldt worked throughout the winter, along
with subcontractors, to enclose the Medical Office
Building and start interior work on the adjacent
hospital structure.
By April 2017, much of the exterior brick work
had been completed on the MOB, and a crew of
about 175 workers were busy completing scheduled
tasks throughout the work site.
Work will continue on the facility
throughout 2017, with completion planned
for August 2018.
Coming in 2018
Transforming Local Healthcare
Bay Area Medical Center and Aurora Health Care are following a vision
to create a community beacon that enhances patient experience, creates
a healthcare destination of choice, and is a leader for wellness.
As we work to transform our community’s healthcare landscape, we
are excited about the possibilities this will bring to our patients, their
families, our employers, and the community.
This project will be the single largest investment in healthcare in our
community’s history. It is being built not just for us but for our children
and the generations that follow.
