BUMPER SUMMER
3 July - 5 September 2017

Dear reader...
Welcome to our Summer edition
– the last one of the school year!
As you head towards the lovely,
long summer holidays Primary
Times is delighted to help you and
your family make the most of this
extended break.
It doesn’t seem to matter how
well we plan, or indeed make
arrangements to meet up with
friends for days out – inevitably we
find ourselves with the dilemma
of “what shall we do today” or “I’m
bored”. Primary Times also recognises the desire to keep our
children away from being tied to their hand-held devices;
ensure they get out in the better weather and safely absorb
as much Vitamin D as they can; to make sure that they do not
forget the skills they have learned at school – but above all, to
make the memory of the long summer holiday a happy one.
The Primary Times What’s on Where diary will help you fill your
child’s summer with happy memories and fun activities – many
at a low or no cost, more fun things to do can be found by
visiting www.primarytimes.net/hertfordshire. From family fun at
Paradise Wildlife Park to discovering butterflies, holiday clubs,
sport camps, a visit to a farm, a trip to the beach at Riverside,
classes in the arts and sport, going to an exhibition or to the
theatre and visiting Hertfordshire’s museums – Primary Times is
here to help you make those happy memories.
We have four great competitions on pages 31 where you can
win some brilliant prizes, enter online today!
Have a wonderful summer holiday.
Foster care transforms lives - can you?
Our need to provide safe, secure and loving homes for children and
young people grows every year.
In 2016 our committed and dedicated foster carers helped to support 550
children and young people throughout Hertfordshire, but we are always looking
for more foster carers. We need to recruit 60 new foster carers this year so that
we can continue to provide stable, loving homes, at a time of great uncertainty.
The time a child stays with a foster carer can vary from day care or overnight
stays to long-term fostering until they reach 21. We make sure that each and
every foster carer meets the needs of our children and young people so our
matching process helps to ensure your time together will be successful.
Q: Who can foster?
A: Foster carers come from all walks of life. There are many myths about
fostering; however, whether you’re married, in a relationship or single, rent or
own your home, or have children of your own, if you are over 21 - you could
become a foster carer this year. All we ask is that you have a spare bedroom
and can provide a loving and safe environment for a child in need of stability.
We offer generous allowances, a start-up package and 24 hour access to
advice and training. If you think you have what it takes to transform lives, then
we want to hear from you.
For more information about becoming a foster carer visit:
World’s Biggest Coffee Morning
Friday 29th September 2017
Macmillan Cancer Support is urging schools, nurseries and uniform groups
across the UK to help raise awareness and vital funds via a school-focused
fundraising event - World’s Biggest
the perfect opportunity to open up a
dialogue around cancer in a fun but
educational setting.
There are many skills to be gained
for young people hosting a
Coffee Morning, from creating the
promotional materials, such as
posters and invitations, to handling
money, understanding health and
safety and communicating with
Wish upon a playground
The Verulamium at Play charity group will be holding a fundraising event at
Verulamium Park’s play area at 2pm on Saturday July 15th to continue our
fundraising effort to raise £250,000 to give the play area in St Albans a total
redesign.
We will be asking youngsters to come dressed as fairies, princes and
princesses, superheroes and ordinary boys and girls! The main event will be
children filling the sky with bubbles and wishing for a new playground in
Verulamium Park at 2pm.
This event will be aimed at pre-school and primary school-aged children and
their families. There will be Wish Upon a Party’s fairy godmother there to “run”
the event, and it will be very fanciful and inspirational. The event is free to
attend, but is intended to raise a small amount of money through bubbles
and cake sales on the day.
Herts Police
Hertfordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner is considering bringing the
governance of police and fire services together. The two services would
remain independent.
The proposals suggest a number of benefits:
• Improved public safety through joint training and operational activity.
• Greater protection of the fire budget. What’s raised for fire is spent on
fire, rather than being diverted to other services.
• Improved joint response to major emergency incidents.
• Better use of resources, including a co-located control room.
This summer, discover a wild reading
adventure at your library!
Animal Agents, Summer Reading Challenge 2017 launches in all Hertfordshire
Libraries on Saturday 15 July. We’re challenging children of all ages to read
six library books of their choice over the holidays and tell our friendly staff
about them.
As young readers tackle this year’s FREE challenge,
they’ll investigate a curious library
mystery with the help of the Animal
Agents: an amazing team of crimebusting
creatures designed by Horrid
Henry illustrator Tony Ross.
There are exciting rewards to collect
featuring all the clues needed to
crack the case, and everyone
who finishes their six books
will be awarded a medal and a
certificate. Children who finish
by Saturday 9 September
could also win a ticket to an
exclusive author event!
With 20,000 Hertfordshire children taking part last year, would you want to
Tips to keep child tooth
decay at bay
A report earlier this year showed the number of primary school-aged children
who have had teeth removed because of decay has increased for the fourth
year in a row, and the need for tooth extraction is the number one reason why
five to nine-year-old children are admitted to hospital. Much of this is thought
to be due to the amount of fizzy drinks that are consumed in the UK.
But tooth decay is a preventable
disease, so how can we help to
reverse this trend and save our
children’s teeth?
Children should always brush
last thing at night – and again
during the day
It’s important to brush at least twice
daily for a minimum of 2 minutes.
There are some great timers out
there to make this fun for you and your children! At nighttime, it’s particularly
important not to eat afterwards or drink milk, because at night there is a greater
chance of tooth decay development if refined sugar is left on tooth surfaces
overnight, and because less saliva (which protects the teeth) is being produced.
Children should visit the dentist regularly
Children should visit the dentist when their first milk teeth appear and then as
regularly as the dentist advises.
Cut down the sugar in your child’s diet
This also means sugar added to cereal as well as refined sugar that comes in
processed food or drinks such as chocolate, crisps, biscuits, sweets, and cakes.
If your child does have to have treats then reduce the frequency and amount
of sugary food and drinks and limit consumption to meal times and brush
afterwards. This reduces the length of time the food substance is in the mouth
and means bacteria don’t have enough time to act on them to cause damage.
Rethink your child’s snacks
The best snacks to give children are raw vegetables and fruit. Chopped up pieces
of cucumber and carrot sticks are good, as are bananas. Other recommended
snacks include rice cakes and plain popcorn. Dried fruit is particularly high
in sugar, so should only be given to children with meals and never as a snack
between meals.
Think about what your children drink
Enamel is what makes up the outer layer of a tooth and it is important that
it is kept intact otherwise loss of enamel can lead to sensitivity and/or pain.
Acidic drinks such as fizzy drinks or soda, and also citrus fruit juice like orange,
lemon and grapefruit are substances that can erode the enamel. Fizzy drinks
are NEVER a good idea for children!
Educate your child about their teeth
One Stop Doctors are offering primary schools in Hertfordshire an educational
session for children run by dental experts. If you would like your child’s school
to run one of these sessions, do mention it to them!
One Stop Doctors, the private healthcare clinic in Hertfordshire, offers
dental services for all the family, and is open seven days a week, from
early till late, with plenty of parking. The clinic has a wide range of services
as well as dentists, including GPS, scans and tests, minor injuries and
specialist paediatric consultants. Call 0800 852 1234 to book a same day
appointment and find out more. www.onestopdoctors.co.uk
EDUCATION
St Hilda’s School
A small, caring school for girls that nurtures resilience, achievement
and confidence.
“Our daughter would not be where she is today without all the input
and hard work from the school team at St Hilda’s.”
The School was inspected in November 2016 by ISI and was deemed
‘compliant in all areas’. The inspectorate commented that ‘there is
evidence of good teaching everywhere’ and that ‘the pupils are eager
learners and their behaviour is impeccable.’ A touching comment by
one of the girls interviewed by the Reporting Inspector occurred when
she was asked “What is the worst thing about St Hilda’s?” to which the
girl replied “Going home!”
Come and see for yourself what this outstanding School has to offer.
Learning for the long run
At Kumon, our aim is for each
and every child to become an
independent, advanced learner,
with a positive attitude to study.
By studying the maths and English
programmes, our students develop
independent learning skills and
increased self-confidence as they
work out how to overcome challenges by themselves.
Every child is different, and so their programme of study should be
too. Our individualised programmes enable students to progress
to an advanced level, at their own pace, so they can realise their
potential and experience success. www.kumon.co.uk
Focus on
Education
EDUCATION
Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School
At Habs, we have three goals in mind: to ensure your son looks
forward to coming to school each and every day, to ensure he receives
a top class education during his time with us, and preparing him for
entry into our Senior School by
the time he turns eleven.
The most important thing is that
our pupils are safe, happy and
really enjoying their learning in
these first, crucial years. Our Pre-
Prep school, situated in the leafy
St Albans countryside, provides
72 boys aged between 5 and 7 years old, with a safe and secure
environment in which they can thrive.
The Joy of Learning
Learning works well when it
is fun. At First Class Learning
we have found that the
three main ingredients for
successful learning are
excellent materials, a nurturing
environment and sharing in
the pleasure of our students’
achievements.
Rakesh Nakarasa (pictured),
in year 2 from Stevenage, is
a great example of someone
with an infectious enthusiasm
for learning. Rakesh was so proud of his work for First Class
Learning that he took it to school to show his teachers and was
rewarded with a Merit!
The door is open for potential
At Radley we offer an environment for boys to grow in self-confidence,
thrive academically, and make the most of the many opportunities
we offer. We pride ourselves on the pursuit of excellence and on
encouraging boys to develop
their talents and discover new
interests. Radley defines itself by
its caring community where all
are passionate about what they
do, and dedicated to it.
A Radley education is about
independent thought and
learning with enthusiasm. It is
about cultural awareness and the benefits of team sport. It is about
academic ambition. It is about learning to live with others; it is about
preparation for the world beyond its gates. Above all, it is about the
core values that will underpin success in all its forms throughout a
Radleian’s life: as leaders, as citizens, as human beings.
Radley has Awards that can be worth up to 100% of the fees for
talented boys at 11+ or 13+. We welcome applications for boys
currently attending a maintained school who excel academically
or at music, sport, art or drama. Radley will provide financial
support for two years at a Prep school before continuing to Radley at
13 years of age.
Garden Theatre – The Lost World
Since before the times of Ancient Greece,
storytellers have told tall tales about
adventurers’ travels to strange lands and the
monsters they meet there. But in Sir Arthur
Conan Doyle’s “The Lost World” version of the
classic plot, the adventurers were the first to
bring the monsters back! This inspired the likes
of King Kong, Godzilla, Alien and a host of other
classic monster movies! Bookings go to www.
The Wolves of Willoughby Chase
Set in an alternative Victorian England where
wolves roam the countryside, and where the
winters are bleak and frozen this is a beautiful
story of two cousins joined in adversity,
showing resilience, courage and initiative
in the face of wicked adults, foul weather,
wolves, long journeys, sickness and deceit. In a
departure from the wonderful musicals put on
recently by Barn Youth, this play has a smaller
cast, with a chorus adding to the atmosphere
as the action moves along. All parts, including
adult roles, will be played by young actors,
allowing them to test themselves and show
their skills to bring audiences a chilling but
ultimately heart-warming adventure.
