ABOUT GÖMBÖC<br />
Gömböc is a mathematical innovation, exclusive gift and sci<strong>en</strong>ce<br />
toy, that can help you think over your dilemmas, draw your daily<br />
inspiration and remind yourself: it’s just a matter of time to<br />
regain your balance. Differ<strong>en</strong>t versions of Gömböc are available<br />

The Gömböc (pronounced as ‘goemboets‘)<br />
is the first known homog<strong>en</strong>ous object with<br />
one stable and one unstable equilibrium<br />
point, thus two equilibria altogether on<br />
a horizontal surface. It is proveable, that<br />
no object with less than two equilibria<br />
exists.<br />
If placed on a horizontal surface in an<br />
arbitrary position the Gömböc returns to the<br />
stable equilibrium point, similar to ‘weeble’<br />
toys. While the weebles rely on a weight in the<br />
bottom, the Gömböc consists of homog<strong>en</strong>ous<br />
material, thus the shape itself accounts for<br />
self-righting.
OUR HISTORY<br />
GÖMBÖC IN THE MEDIA<br />
It is proveable that no object exists with less than two<br />
equilibria. For many years, it seemed that no such object can exist,<br />
until Vladimir I. Arnold, the world famous Russian mathematician,<br />
came up with the conjecture that such an object can possibly exist.<br />
He had a conversation about this idea with Gabor Domokos at a<br />
confer<strong>en</strong>ce in 1995.<br />
After almost a decade of research, two Hungarian mathematicians,<br />
Gábor Domokos and Péter Várkonyi have called into exist<strong>en</strong>ce this<br />
unique mathematical innovation, the Gömböc. Impossible became<br />
possible.<br />
Since th<strong>en</strong>, the Gömböc has become not only the symbol of<br />
Hungarian innovation, but also it is regarded worldwide as an<br />
outstanding example of the physical manifestation of an outstanding<br />
mathematical idea.<br />
Gömböc has made its debut on the cover of the prestigious international journal, The<br />
Mathematical Intellig<strong>en</strong>cer. The pervious Hungarian inv<strong>en</strong>tion on this cover was<br />
Rubik’s Cube, in 1979. In 2007, Gömböc was featured among the 70 most interesting inv<strong>en</strong>tions<br />
of the year by the New York Times Magazine. The inv<strong>en</strong>tors pres<strong>en</strong>ted Gömböc 001 to Professor<br />
V.I. Arnold on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Gömböc 1209 is available on a perman<strong>en</strong>t<br />
exhibition at the Whipple Museum of the History of Sci<strong>en</strong>ce at the University of Cambridge.<br />
Gömböc was the symbol of Hungary at the World Expo in Shanghai, in 2010. In the last years,<br />
Gömböc appeared among others at the University of Oxford and Princeton, on the bi<strong>en</strong>nial world<br />
chef championship, Bocuse d’Or, in an opera of Halle, on BBC with Steph<strong>en</strong> Fry and was pres<strong>en</strong>ted at<br />
several exhibitions worldwide. So far, articles in 28 languages have be<strong>en</strong> published about Gömböc.

GÖMBÖC IN SPACE<br />

Gömböc is fascinating to look at and<br />
watch wiggle back to its stable point,<br />
but its value is not just in its unique<br />
aesthetics. For one, the differ<strong>en</strong>t angles and<br />
proportions have to be measured with a<br />
precision that is to within t<strong>en</strong> microns – one<br />
t<strong>en</strong>th of the thickness of a human hair - to<br />
make the shape work. The shape may also<br />
give us insight in to why and how turtles<br />
are able to get back on their feet wh<strong>en</strong><br />
upside down without the use of their limbs.<br />
Highly domed turtle shells are nature’s own<br />
Gömböc’s. Seeing math and nature come<br />
together sure is a beautiful thing.<br />
The Gömböc helps to decode the history of<br />
pebbles on Mars.<br />
The Gömböc was the key in the<br />
id<strong>en</strong>tification of governing equations for<br />
the temporal morphog<strong>en</strong>esis of pebbles.<br />
Aided by these equations and by using the<br />
images of eroded pebbles tak<strong>en</strong> by<br />
NASA’s Curiosity rover, sci<strong>en</strong>tists could<br />
estimate the l<strong>en</strong>gth of anci<strong>en</strong>t Martian<br />
rivers which existed 3 billion years ago on<br />
the surface of the Red Planet. This result<br />
is regarded as one of the most compelling<br />

GÖMBÖC FEATURES IN DRONE DESIGN<br />
PRODUCTION<br />
Cutting-edge drone design inspired by the Gömböc.<br />
The GRASP laboratory at the University of<br />
P<strong>en</strong>nsylvania is one of the world’s foremost<br />
research and developm<strong>en</strong>t c<strong>en</strong>ters for helicopter<br />
drones. The lab’s team has pioneered to design a<br />
bio-inspired flying robots with collective behavior.<br />
Their latest breakthrough is super-stable pico-drone<br />
capable of in-flight self-righting, designed by Yash<br />
Mulgaonkar. The carbon-fiber composite exoskeleton<br />
of the miniature robot was inspired by the Gömböc<br />
shape. Although the Gömböc shape is very s<strong>en</strong>sitive<br />
and in case of a homog<strong>en</strong>eous body deviations<br />
of 1/100 millimeter may destroy its mechanical<br />
properties, the shape itself is a good starting point<br />
for any kind of self-righting mechanism. The P<strong>en</strong>n<br />

Gömböc’s are produced by using CNC (Computer<br />
Numerical Control) milling technology. Manufacturing one<br />
single Gömböc requires several hours of precision milling. Every<br />
hundredth of millimeter counts for Gömböc-type of objects, so<br />
we work with high accuracy level. The smallest change in the<br />
process can have the harmful effect that the product will lose its<br />
“gömböc-self”. Therefore, if we <strong>en</strong>grave a Gömböc, we have to<br />
recalculate the whole self-righting shape to be able to balance<br />
the mass inequalities.

Gömböc was in focus in the Hungarian pavilion at the Expo in<br />
Shanghai, in 2010. Because of the importance of this ev<strong>en</strong>t, the<br />
Hungarian Post Office has issued a block of stamps and a booklet<br />
in memory of this special occasion. Each unique stamp (with a face<br />
value of HUF 100) shows a differ<strong>en</strong>t characteristic position during<br />
the movem<strong>en</strong>t of Gömböc.<br />
