Dax & Atragun 

The US production duo are doing 

well to climb in the industry. Their 

music has entered the Beatport 

top 100 on three occasions and 

they've also received support 

from Sam Allan, DJ Xquizit, Myk 

Bee, Monovere and Aimmoon. You 

may remember our previous chat 

with Atragun, this time Dax tells 

us about their work together. 

Please tell us about yourselves 

Funny, Andrew and I started under 

a tree at Albright College where we 

were both students. I was busy 

studying guitar/songwriting and 

video game/background music 

when I met Andrew. Andrew had 

been producing for a while and 

took me under his mentorship to 

teach me the ins and outs of 

production. I also made a 

friendship I wouldn't trade for the 

world. I remember our first track 

was titled 'Albright Anthem' and 

we got good and bad criticism but, 

most importantly, people telling 

us to keep going and giving us their 

honest opinion helped us push 

ourselves in production. 

We also played our first show at a 

small club in Reading, PA called 

Reverb and turned out to be our 

first show together. 

Atragun, we understand that you 

came to music at age 6 through 

piano lessons & classical music - 

is there still a love for classical 

music influencing your electro 

music? 

I still love classical music and I still 

play a bit of it. I always look to put 

different influences into our music 

when it comes to different 

instruments and as well 

experimenting with different 

sounds. 

Dax, how did you get into music? 

I started playing guitar at 9 and 

moved on to other instruments like 

bass and piano. I got into electronic 

music around 17 when I was 

mesmerized by the melodies that 

Deadmau5 has produced. The 

reason I identified with Deadmau5 

is that even through the 

commercialization of electronic 

music he stayed true to his art. The 

one song I would recommend when 

facing writer's block is 'I 

Remember'. 

I got my first synthesizer because 

of Deadmau5. I would not have 

been able to produce one lick of 

music if it wasn't for Deadmau5 and 

the music he created. I also just 

purchased his masterclass so I

am so happy to see what goes 

through his mind when he 

produces his songs in that massive 

studio. 

What does music mean to both of 

you? 

Dax: Music is the main reason I 

decide to get up in the morning. I 

would not be anywhere really 

without music. 

Atragun: I loved music ever since I 

followed the emergence of trance 

as well as hearing the nostalgic 

presence of Daft Punk's 

'Discovery'. 

What does the Dax & Atragun 

music bring to the world that is 

unique? 

I would say that our project 

provides many things. It really 

provides an escape into another 

path. We try to create an 

augmented reality experience 

with our music. Being in the 

workforce and seeing many 

different things Meta.is has done 

around music inspires me and 

Andrew to keep creating an 

atmospheric sound when it comes 

to our music. 

We just love to create music that 

people can escape reality to and 

can immerse themselves with.

Honestly, when it comes to music 

we are so happy that even one 

person has taken the time to listen 

to our music. It was literally nuts 

when we went on Soundcloud and 

saw 36,000 people have listened 

to our music and as well 4 of our 

remixes hit the Beatport top 100 

for releases. Having people like 

Monoverse, Dj Xquzit, David 

Thullin, Myk Bee and Ozzy XPM like 

and support our music is also 

another bit of a push that keeps us 

going 

When I or Andrew listen to our 

music we realize that it's our sound 

and it does have a piece of us in the 

songs we make. 

You have played at some hot spots 

and along notable artists, which 

has been your favorite 

performance so far and why? 

The most notable performance 

would have to be when we played 

LIV with Gareth Emery. We were 

amazed how nice Gareth was and 

he gave us the inspiration to have 

a good set after him. I also want to 

say thank you to David Grutman 

who made that happen, without 

him Andrew and I would not be 

where we are and he has been an 

amazing mentor. The staff were 

also amazing and made the

performance feel like we were in 

our bedrooms listening and 

practicing our sets. 

One favorite memory that I had 

with Andrew is that we were both 

playing Story in Miami closing for 

3LAU and at the end of the show 

we took a shot with the staff and 

then exited to get an Uber. Andrew 

randomly got pizza from a stranger 

who was obviously drunk and tried 

to offer me some, I wasn't hungry 

due to having a large meal. Andrew 

proceeded to put the pizza on the 

street behind the Uber and left it. 

What advice do you have for 

aspiring musicians? 

What's in store for the future? 

We have an event on August 5th 

coming up with Deep Roots 

Records and we do have a new 

remix for Miroslav Vrlik coming out 

with midnight coast called 'Desire' 

and are additionally working on a 

new track called 'Electropulse'.

The advice I would have to any 

aspiring musician is to make sure 

you keep your mind in the right 

place when venturing into the 

music industry. Always look for 

mentors and never be opposed to 

learning something new. 

Also when it comes to any shows, 

the best advice for any artist is to 

get everything on paper and know 

what you're getting into. Most 

importantly take things with a 

grain of salt and don't be afraid to 

put a value on yourself. 

Also, do not follow trends, be 

unique and make sure that your 

sound reflects you.

Ki pe dir? (What’s Up) 

Hope you are all doing well. 

I am experiencing a wonderful life journey and music 

is helping me a lot. In the first place it is merely 

silence which enables me to listen to myself and what 

surrounds me. This exercise has revealed (and it goes 

on) a lot about my perception of life as well as my 

relationship with God. It helped me listen to the 

music of life. Our life is a well-written score with all 

the tempos, dynamics and every part that makes it a 

masterpiece which is better understood in silence. 

Throughout this new experience, the need for music 

is omnipresent which my soul and body are relishing. 

What is enjoyed most of the time is instrumental 

music; YouTube is full of these compilations ranging 

from piano, guitar jazzy style, bossa nova or simply 

nature sounds. 

My work screen, already fitted with loudspeakers, is a 

treat as it sounds like café background music. Now 

getting in my office is more like entering a spa. The 

guys are teasing about it but in the end they finally 

like it, saying it has improved their day at work. 

With essential oil diffused and background music on, 

it is much a comfy zone to get in without any stress 

and most important of all (benefits to the company) 

the work is done so easily. I look forward to spending 

more time at the office now, enjoying this new

Channel 4: 

50 Shades Of Gay 

Now, I write a lot about Channel 4 and 

their brand, and this is one of the 

reasons why. They are the underdog 

channel, with even their launch 

rattling many cages and 

programming being bold right from 

the start. They have never been afraid 

to speak out and show the beauty of 

being yourself. Shows involving 

LGBT+ relations have become a set 

part of the brand as well as various 

ethnicities, disabilities and other 

unique traits. We are all unique, but 

we are all the same. And the way this 

is embraced by the brand helps us to 

realise this and stop categorising 

each other. 

Channel 4 is marking the 50th 

anniversary of the partial 

decriminalisation of homosexuality / 

Britain accepting love in all its forms 

with a new season of programmes. 

This special season has been put 

together exceptionally well with a 

variety of perspectives to reach 

different tastes and make an impact. 

The network are also in partnership 

with Pride in London to air their first 

ever television advertisements. 

The 30” films tell the stories of four 

characters each contemplating the 

loss of a relationship with a loved one 

which has come about because they 

wouldn’t accept them for who they 

are. A special 60” version of the four 

adverts tells the story of all four 

characters and a 90” version will run 

across cinema during the campaign 

period.

This programme really plays to your 

emotions, the stories of bravery and 

strength are empowering, whilst the 

stories of sorrow and injustice are 

indescribably heartbreaking. To 

think that so many had the hide their 

love, were punished and even given 

death sentences - it's just not right. 

One very cool feature in this was

from Reverend Richard Coles sharing 

fond memories of visiting Heaven, 

the first ever gay superclub in the UK, 

in his youth. Reverend Richard Coles 

was a part of pop group The 

Communards releasing hits 

including 'Don't Leave Me This Way' 

and 'Never Can Say Goodbye'. What 

was interesting to hear is that the 

same acceptance he felt all those 

years ago is still being felt there to 

this day. 

Pop, Pride and Prejudice 

After homosexuality was legalised 50 

years ago, this is the story of how it 

was pop music that won the battle for 

hearts and minds, and made it OK to 

be gay. 

While politicians and protestors 

focused on legal reform, another 

struggle was going on – the battle for 

hearts and minds. The fight to win 

mainstream status for queer culture 

was waged, and won, by a group of 

pioneers who used popular music as 

the stage for a revolution. Put simply: 

it was pop music that made it OK to 

be gay. Channel 4 marks this 

momentous anniversary with the 

story of the fearless & flamboyant 

artists– from global icons to hidden 

heroes – who used pop music as gay 

culture’s Trojan Horse, seducing us all 

with a soundtrack to die for. 

I love this programme, it really tells 

the journey of gay culture beautifully 

through music over the decades. And 

it's amazing to see how music did and 

still does have such a huge positive 

impact to many people. 

In this current age, it's hard to picture 

the creative world being tarnished 

for associations with gay people. But 

only in a creative stance were people 

able to express themselves and fight 

back with a strong force. Because 

passion without substance can only 

go so far. 

Dusty Springfield's hidden identity is 

spoken of, subtle references were 

caught by those who felt the same 

explaining that she yearned to share 

her true self. David Bowie iconically 

"startled people" as he says, enjoying 

rebelling and showcasing his 

colourful persona. Gospel came onto 

the scene too with a soulful sense of 

empowerment as shown in 

Sylvester's 'You Make Me Feel 

(Mighty Real)'. With public liberation 

rising, the law struck down hard, but 

this only made people stand up for 

themselves more which reflected in 

the music too with Tom Robinson's 

'Glad To Be Gay'. Boy George, another 

legendary act who was not afraid to 

be different, stated his desire to help 

make more people "tolerant" to 


different ways of living. Music and 

attitudes became more bold and 

brave, ignoring any sense of taboo 

discussion as shown in Frankie Goes 

to Hollywood's 'Relax'. Channel 4's 

own commissioning editor at the 

time, Alan Fountain, gave the camera 

to the LGBT+ community allowing 

them to reveal more of their world.

and proud.

This also gives me thoughts to music 

icons to the LGBT+ community 

including pop artists Lady Gaga, 

Madonna, Britney Spears, Pink and 

Cher with their attitudes of love and 

rebellion. Hardcore also has a huge 

influence with artists including 

Darren Styles, Hixxy and Mark Breeze 

with happy, high energy dance music. 

I was intrigued to find out that 

Channel 4 has an LGBT+ group as a 

part of the company to liaise with 

staff and develop in the public. 

4 Pride is Channel 4’s LGBT+ network. 

We are here to inform and inspire, to 

educate and help build connections 

across the organisation, running 

regular events, from panel discussions 

to inspirational speakers, and socials 

that bring our network together. We 

also organise Channel 4’s presence at 

Pride in London, Stonewall 

conferences and help influence policy 

and positive change for LGBT+ staff.

'Lessons From My Baba' by Tayfun is a lovely momento to his father with 

honest words and beautiful accompanying music. I especially like the light 

piano notes and then the Turkish strings to finish off. 

Capturing the bond between both father and son, Tayfun pays homage to 

Fathers Day by releasing the visuals for his latest single ‘Lessons From My 

Baba’ via Link Up TV. Delivering an ode to his Father, Tayfun constructs a 

personal and honest reflection of how his father made him the man who he is 

today. 

Embracing his roots, not only through the relationship between himself and 

his father, he goes back to his motherland Turkey to film the stunning scenic 

backdrop to the video. His culture and heritage play a poignant role in his 

music and both ‘Lessons From My Baba’ and his debut single ‘Figo’ are shining 

examples of that. 

SLVNG MAJOR returns on the production as he infuses a piano-laced 

instrumental with a heavy beat that accommodates the rich sounds of the Saz 

guitar. ‘Lessons From My Baba’ acts as the foreground of where both western 

and eastern musical influences merge together and create a hybrid that plays 

on different cultural elements. 

2017 has facilitated great growth for Tayfun, having dropped his debut ‘Figo’
