Editorial
We made it to July.
It was definitely a busy semester. We have been working hard since January to boost our
methodology with The House Student´s Area. Also, our The House News came back at full
speed bringing everyone the news about The House Units. We all hope that the semester has
been to you as productive as it has been to us. And to finish the first semester and start the
second one, here is your July bedtable tabloid! Again, we bring back the importance of English in
our professional life, and along with some statistics, our students also tell us why it really is
important! But not only pressure is important, but also fun and health. So read what our students
say about such topics and get what mostly interests you!
Meet Lindsay Puente, a Prof. Dr. from the University of California, Irvine, who spent a week at
our Rib. Preto units and got a chance to talk to our students. Lindsay got impressed about how
much our students can communicate, and that made us very very happy. The House news this
month talks about the Independence Day in the USA, and also about the friendship day.
And there´s astrology, there´s humor, there´s happy birthday! The House News is your
newspaper! And you can contribute by writing when teachers ask you to do so! Enjoy it!
Travelling
Traveling abroad? So you should definitely speak english!
Approximately 375 million people speak English around the world and there are more than 50 English speaking countries,
where English is either the official or the primary language. It is the third most common primary language in the world (behind
Mandarin Chinese and Spanish). The English language, which evolved from a combination of Old English and the German
Anglo-Saxon tongue, began to be commonly used around the 5th century.
English Speaking Countries in North America
The largest English speaking countries are located in North America--the United States and Canada. In addition to the US and
Canada, several Caribbean countries speak English.
English Speaking Countries in Europe
The English language has its roots in northern Europe and so it is fitting that it is widely spoken there. More than 98 percent of
the residents of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales) speak English. In addition, English is
the official language in the Republic of Ireland and the Isle of Man.
English Speaking Countries in the Rest of the World
The British Empire of the 19th and early 20th centuries as well as the popularity of American culture since World War II has
brought the English language to all corners of the globe. Major English speaking countries outside of Europe and North
America include Australia, Nigeria, New Zealand, and South Africa. English is also the primary language in such diverse
locales as Guam, Singapore, and the Philippines. Though only a minority of the people (12 percent) in India speak English, that
still amounts to more than 125 million persons in that densely-populated country.

Aubergine curry with
lamb cutlets
A showstopping family curry, perfect for a special occasion.
Pair the chunky spiced aubergine and turmeric-coated lamb
cutlets with rice and cooling yogurts
Prep: 15 mins
Cook:50 mins
Level: easy serves 2
Ingredients
For the curry
1 large aubergine
3 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp fennel seeds
1 tsp nigella seeds
2 tsp ground coriander
large pinch of turmeric
large pinch of chilli powder
2cm piece of ginger, finely grated
4 garlic cloves, crushed or finely grated
1 can peeled cherry tomatoes
For the lamb
8 small lamb cutlets, French trimmed
2 tbsp plain yogurt
¼ tsp turmeric
olive oil, for frying
To serve
yogurt, coriander leaves and nigella seeds
cooked rice
Method
1. For the lamb, mix the yogurt and turmeric, and
brush it over each cutlet. Cut the aubergine into large
wedges. Put a good slug of oil into a frying pan and fry
the wedges on both side until they are browned all
over and very soft (add more oil if you need to) – they
should look almost translucent and lightly charred.
Lift the wedges gently out of the pan with tongs,
leaving the oil behind – if you have more than 1 tbsp
oil left, pour some off.
2. Put the fennel seeds and nigella seeds in the pan
and heat them until they start to pop. Add the
coriander, turmeric and chilli, and let the oil foam up a
little with the spices. Add the ginger and garlic, and
cook for 1 min, making sure the mixture doesn’t stick.
Tip in the tomatoes and simmer the mixture for 3 mins
or until it starts to thicken, then season well. Return
the aubergine to the pan to continue cooking.
3. Meanwhile, heat some oil in a frying pan. Salt the
lamb cutlets on both sides and fry them until they are
browned on the outside but still slightly pink inside.
It’s important to make sure the fat is well browned.
4. Spoon some yogurt over the curry and sprinkle
with coriander leaves and nigella seeds. Serve with
the lamb and chapatis or rice.
Prof. Dr. Lindsay Puente,
from the University of
California, Irvine, spent a
chance to visit The House
units in Ribeirão Preto. Her
Lindsay has taught English
Literature and Culture at the
University level since 2003.
She has also worked in
editing, translation, and
educational writing.
Not only did she provide
students with the chance to
talk to a native person, but
also brought information on
Texas, where she is from. The
House News asked Lindsay a
couple of questions on this
experience:
THN: You spent one week visiting the units of The House in Ribeirão Preto and talking to our students.
What did you make of the experience?
Lindsay: I was very impressed with all the students and teachers at The House, and with the organization
and method in place.
THN: How can we, Brazilians, improve our level of English, especially concerning pronunciation?
Lindsay: I think that one of the hardest things about American English pronunciation is the many different
vowels. The shape of your mouth becomes very important to master the difference between pen/pan or
ten/tan. This attention to detail can make a huge difference.
THN: Our students are very curious about this question: what did you feel about their abilities with the
language?
Lindsay: I thought everyone was doing great! The students are clearly putting the work in, and it shows!

Bingo Class!
After 3 weeks of Bingo Classes, the great moment came at last! Our Final Bingo, which was held in our new area
for parties and events of The House, brought interaction and a very cool, fun atmosphere. Students could drink
some beer, talk to their friends and also make new friends. Immersion in English, a trademark of The House, was
strong in the event. No Portuguese was allowed!
Teacher Abilio was the presenter of the bingo and one by one announced the balls. The prizes were articles from
The House Store, which will soon be purchased with The House Dollars. As our student André Luis Teixeira puts
it, “I like The House school because it makes me feel good!”, the Final Bingo Happy Hour was the first of many
events to come!
And congratulations to MARCEL DE LAIA, the winner to our Final Bingo! Marcel got very cool gifts for his
Sports? This is lifestyle!!
My name is Adriane, I am 53 years old. I have practiced street running since 2012. I already attended the gym, but I
didn`t use to run; one day, my teacher invited me to practice a running class. At first I thought I couldn't, but I tried and
since then I never stopped. I started to participate in competitions, for example: Corrida da Longevidade Bradesco,
Circuito Caixa, Track Field, Corrida Integração and many more. I definitely fell in love with this sport! In this moment I'm
training to be in the important Corrida 10 Milhas da Garoto, in Vitória-E.S., 16 km will be a challenge of growing
intensity. I'm training very much in long sessions, I practice 4 days a week and train muscle strengthening. Well, I think
it's necessary to include physical activity in your routine, you can run, you can ride a bicycle or walk, that makes life
better, in my case I feel so alive and happy, this is awesome! But remember, before starting any physical activity, it is
important to see a doctor. Let's go!
A One-to-one meeting!!
Fausto Galo Scarpim
If you don't know this expression, a one-on-one activity involves two people
talking directly, usually with one teaching or giving information to the other.
Our student Fausto Scarpim had this challenging experience at work and
gives us further information on it:
Fausto Galo Scarpim – Lead Quality Specialist
Company: Dow Agrosciences Seeds and Biotechnology Brazil
LTDA - Main Activities: Flower Inspection, Grow Out and
Orange Flag Coordinator.
My meeting was with Janice Hotz – Director of Quality. In the
face-to-face meeting I showed the projects and activities that I am
responsible for. I had the opportunity to talk about the company's career plan and expected
growth. I had another meeting with the Brazilian Quality Control Team and also with the Director. In this meeting,
there were coordinators, leaders of Brazil and the Global Director of Quality.
We showed all the projects of the team, including saving projects. We also showed our worksheet of capacity and
demand, our reports of Walk About, etc.
How I prepared myself
I made the presentation in the company, prepared what I would speak in each slide, trained at home a little and one
week before the presentation I had a class with teacher Abilio to try to correct some things. Janice asked me what I
was thinking about the activities I'm responsible for, if I was enjoying, she asked if I had any complains.
During the conversation, I had difficulties in some words. However, I was attentive to the context, I wasn't worried
about understanding every word. I leave these suggestions for the people who will experience this same situation:
do not get nervous during conversations, stay attentive to the context, and do not be worried about
speaking all the verbal tenses the right way.

HEALTH
Why work out?
Obesity is not just an aesthetic
factor, fat, especially abdominal, is
the main factor for diseases such
as heart attack and stroke, the two
leading causes of death in the
world.
The practice of bodybuilding is
essential for increasing muscle
strength, decreasing body fat,
increasing cardiorespiratory
capacity, and thereby decreasing
the likelihood of these diseases
already mentioned and also
diabetes, hypertension, etc .
Playing with your child, walking
your dog, dating, doing day-to-day
tasks, everything will be done with
more disposition and health when
you include physical exercise in
your life. Think about that!
What did you think of
Professor Lindsay's visit?
Campos Salles
The Texan teacher is amazing. She spoke with a very
good accent! I understood everything that she
discussed in class!
Muna Hanna ,Teth
This experience is different and very good for the students,
because we have a strong contact with the English language.
Lindsay is amazing! I loved the experience!
Jessica Vecchi,Teth
I love to meet different people and know about their lives. Today we
met Lindsay and she is a very good teacher. We learned more about
word sounds and a little bit about the American culture. Thanks,
The House group! You always surprise us!
Eduardo Tarifa,Resh
Roberta Maraninchi,Aleph
The class with the teacher from Texas was very good because I
understood 80% of the conversation. That inspired me to study
harder and to travel to USA to know another country and attend
a course of extension in marketing management.
I really liked this class with the teacher from USA. This class
was very interactive and I could test myself. The teacher is very
good and I hope we can have more classes like this one!
It was a great opportunity to talk to an American person without
traveling abroad. I could learn about another country´s culture
and I am also happy because I could understand her very well.
Washington Aleriano, Tzade
I liked the exchange class because I had the opportunity to
listen to a native speaker talking and explaining the different
sounds that here in Brazil we have difficulties to pronunce.
I also learned a little bit about the Texas culture!
Priscila da Silva, Shin
Bruno Pignoli, Shin
It was a very nice experience to have this class with Lindsay
because we could undersatnd her and she could understand us,
here at The House.
survey
Lindsay is very funny and teaches English very well. She
travels a lot and works hard too. In my opinion, it was an
excellent experience because Lindsay is a native girl from
USA and it was my first contact with a native speaker.
The teacher is FANTASTIC! She is very smart, kind and I could
understand everything that she said!
Wenderson Andrade, Tzade
Paula Fernandes, Lamed
It was a great and funny experience! The teacher is very didatic and
she makes us feel good and comfortable during the class.
Lucas Rangel, Resh
It was a good experience to meet a person with native english, it
was good to see in fact how the pronunciation is important and
how she speaks. I'll definitely come again to another class like
this, especially because of her interest in Brazil.
Felipe Duarte, Aleph
The class was very different and cool because listening to the
stories that the American teacher told motivates us; the language
use is very good. And I am happy because I could understand the
teacher talking with us.
Katia Nogueira, Teth
I approve this experience because we have the opportunity to
know more about other cultures and countries.
Lucas Briochi , Lamed
Lidsay's class was a good experience! I could talk to other
students and to the teacher from Texas, what increased my
English learning. Since I started to study here, I feel very happy!
I liked this experience because it was a great and different
opportunity. The pronunciation is very different! I liked to
meet her and I understood what she was speaking.
In no other day can you feel the
American nationalistic aura as
strongly as in the 4th of July. On
this day, centuries ago, on a
meeting that was called the
Continental Congress, American
men adopted what is now known as
the Declaration of Independence.
This document, now revered by American people,
stated that the thirteen colonies of the British Empire
in the American continent were no longer part of that
Empire, but regarded themselves as independent
states, The United States of America.
Not all of the country now know as the USA was part
of this revolution. The thirteen colonies occupied a
rather small part of the continent, located on the
eastern littoral area. Other colonies, isolated from the
thirteen, choose not to join the revolution, or were
prevented from doing so by military intervention.
Though the revolutionaries professed freedom, that
was a limited freedom - women still couldn't vote, and
slavery was legal.
If you visit the USA during the Fourth of July, you
might be amazed by the rich and extravagant
celebrations. Unlike Brazil, where independence day
is not a particularly popular holiday, in The United
States most families get together for picnics,
barbecues and special dinners. All the important
cities have big parades in the day that are watched by
thousands of people. People wear clothes and make
food and decorate their houses with the colors of the
American flag. Some of these celebrations have
been ongoing for centuries.
● The Bristol Fourth of July Parade has happened
since 1785 in the city of Bristol, Rhode Island. and it is
the oldest continuous celebration of the US.
● The city of Seward, Nebraska, has held a
celebration in the same town square since 1868. The
6.000 inhabitants city receives over 40.000 tourists
on the Fourth of July.
● The famous display of fireworks promoted by the
department store Macy's in New York has been
televised nationwide since 1976.
● The Philippines also use this day to celebrate their
Republic Day. Republic Day commemorates the day
when the country ceased to belong to the United
States of America. How do you feel about Brazil's
Independence Day? Your contribution could be
published in September!
Summer and
Vacations
As we get closer to Winter and a short break
here in the Southern Hemisphere, the people in
the northern side of the globe are approaching
their summer vacations, and a much longer
period of leisure.
School vacations vary widely across the world.
Frequently, they follow seasonal patterns, or
are the result of colonialism, or religious
purposes. In South America, most countries
begin the school year in late february or early
march, after a break of around two months for
Christmas, New Year and some general
summer fun. But Mexico and Ecuador, who
receive a lot of American influence, begin the
school year in September, and in Honduras
there are both situations: Schools that begin in
September and schools who begin in February!
The school year in Asia also has a lot of
variation. It is more or less common for school to
start in September after the end of Summer, but
Singapore and Malaysia go back to school in
the early days of January, and Japan in April.
Thai students only return to school in May, and
their first semester ends in September. Almost
all of Europe starts school in September, after
long summer vacations. And what's more, most
of Africa, for being past colonies of Europe, also
start school in September, even though it is not
post-summer for them.
South Africans, however, go back to school in
January, as do the people of Tanzania. Australia
and New Zealand follow the seasons and start
the new school year after the summer holidays,
in January or February, since they're in the
Southern Hemisphere.
In the United States, summer vacations are
usually three months long. This wasn't always
the case.
Before the 19th century, the school year was
much different in rural and urban areas. In rural
areas, students used to study only in summer
and winter, since spring was dedicated to the
planting, and fall to the harvest. In contrast,
students from urban areas had very long school
years, as long as 240 days of studying per year.
In the 19th century, the scholars and the
government started to uniformize the school
system around the country, shortening the
urban school year and lengthening the rural
areas. At that time, people started to believe
than too much studying was causing health
problems in children, and that having the
summer free to play and interact with nature
was important to make them strong. On the
other hand, it was told to rural children that the
brain, like any muscle, should be exercised
more often, thus creating what we have now.

Friendship Day
The History
Friendship Day was originated by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark cards in 1930, intended to
be 2 August and a day when people celebrated their friendships by holiday celebrations. Friendship
Day was promoted by the greeting card National Association during the 1920s but met with consumer
resistance - given that it was too obviously a commercial gimmick to promote greetings cards. By the
1940s the number of Friendship Day cards available in the US had dwindled and the holiday largely
died out there. There is no evidence to date for its uptake in Europe; however, it has been kept alive
and revitalised in Asia, where several countries have adopted it.
In honor of Friendship Day in 1998, Nane Annan, wife of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan,
named Winnie the Pooh as the world's Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations. The event
was co-sponsored by the U.N. Department of Public Information and Disney Enterprises, and was cohosted
by Kathy Lee Gifford.
Some friends acknowledge each other with exchanges of gifts and cards on this day. Friendship
bands are very popular in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and parts of South America. With the advent of
social networking sites, Friendship Day is also being celebrated online. The commercialization of the
Friendship Day celebrations has led to some dismissing it as a "marketing gimmick". But nowadays it
is celebrated on the first Sunday of August rather than 30 July. However, on 27 July 2011 the 65th
Session of the United Nations General Assembly declared 30 July as "International Day of
Friendship".
The idea of a World Friendship Day was first proposed on 20 July 1958 by Dr.
Ramon Artemio Bracho during a dinner with friends in Puerto Pinasco, a
town on the River Paraguay about 200 miles north of Asuncion, Paraguay.
The World Friendship Crusade has lobbied the United Nations for
many years to recognise 30 July as World Friendship Day and finally on 20
May, General Assembly of the United Nations decided to designate 30
July as the International Day of Friendship; and to invite all Member
States to observe the International Day of Friendship in accordance
with the culture and customs of their local, national and regional
communities, including through education and public awarenessraising
activities. Is also known as Shru and Sanjya day.
Brazil
In Brazil Friend's Day is also
celebrated on July 20.
United States
World Friendship Day is a celebrated on June 30 in the United
States in pockets of Massachusetts, Ohio, and occasionally New
Hampshire. The holiday is often observed on the prior Saturday. As the name
suggests, the primary focus is celebrating friendships, old and new.

Social project
How can IMEC help students learn English faster?
The program offered by IMEC, which involved the practice
of Luta Regional Baiana from Filhos de Bimba Escola
de Capoeira, helps you relieve your tensions and lower the
stress level. It is a known fact that the students of The House
are adults and, thus, have all the worries and problems of
the adulthood.
Our capacity of memorizing and storing information goes
awfully down when we are under strong levels of stress.
By lowering our stress levels, we can feel an enormous
difference in the quality of our memorization system. And
not only are students positively affected by that, but
teachers as well. That´s because the practice of the
program offered by IMEC helps build up strong skills, such
as the ability to be alerted all the time, the ability to think fast
in complex situations and also the capacity of
understanding the other people as well.
Come and get to know better the work of Imec with Luta
Regional Baiana. Every Thursday at 7h30m PM at 530,
Dr. Antonio Carlos Marçal Street.
Founder of IMEC holds a lecture at USP Ribeirão Preto
The founder of Instituto Mascote, Mascote himself, was invited to represent IMEC and Filhos de Bimba
Escola de Capoeira in a lecture to the anthropology course of USP in Ribeirão Preto. The participation was
important because Capoeira Regional (also called Luta Regional Baiana) is rooted in the history of Brazil.
Also, we clearly see that the benefits that its practitioners get are abundant.
Among the many topics discussed in the lecture we the teacher-student relationship in capoeira, the
profile of the capoeira practitioner, the behavior transformations that the student goes through, the current
scenario of capoeira in terms of prejudice and many others. The lecture also had a physical practice
session where USP students could try, some for the first time, the movements created by Mestre Bimba.
Here are some pictures of the event:

Barons of Ribeirão Preto
Last Sunday, Barões had another tryout in search for new athletes
to strengthen the team for the challenges of the second semester.
A tryout is nothing more than a series of exercises such as the
bench press, the 40-yard dash, the cone drill, etc.
The tryout is used to evaluate the candidate's physical abilities,
and check if he is ready to practice the sport.

English JOKE
«What do you think, Doc?"
This joke uses an expression ("a second opinion")
often used when we have a serious health
problem. If we are not sure of our doctor's advice,
we can get "a second opinion" from another
doctor. This is very common when the decision is
very important but in this joke, the decision is not
so important so the doctor's final answer is quite a
surprise. Enjoy!
The doctor said to his (1) patient: 'Your
health is getting (2) worse because you are
so (3) overweight. You are really very fat and
need to lose (4) at least 20 kilograms.'
The patient replied to the doctor: 'I want to
get (5) a second opinion.'
'Okay', the doctor (6) spoke again, 'you are
very (7) ugly too!'
(1) a sick person who goes to see a doctor
(2) "more bad" (we say "good - better - best" and
"bad - worse - worst)
(3) too heavy or too fat
(4) the lowest number, maybe he needs to lose
MORE than 20 kilos!
(5) he wants to go see another doctor
(6) past of "speak»
(7) not good looking
Horoscope
Leo
July 23
August 22
Explanation: The doctor is using the the first
meaning of "opinion", which is just his
personal idea, not the opinion of a professional
doctor!
This is a year on fire, pouring energy into your work, career, and
creativity sectors. The Sun-Pluto conjunction keeps your ambition and
work ethic sky high. The separating Mars-Neptune conjunction makes
sure that emotions, lofty spiritual ideals, and instincts are not left
behind. The Sun is conjoined with fiery Mars as it enters Leo. Here's
your primary energy source for the whole year. Resist burning out or
getting too forceful or impatient. Relax, and go for the gold. There's no
limit to what you can achieve.
The Moon will be not quite New as the Sun enters Leo. This deep,
quiet, dark Moon provides unlimited access to wise private insights.
With this strong Moon in Cancer, home and domestic concerns will be
important and should be well attended to. A Lunar Eclipse on August 7
has the Sun in Leo, followed by a Solar Eclipse in Leo on August 21.
The Lunar Eclipse periods will stress intimate relationships and may
create self-doubts. The Solar Eclipse may have more influence in
public or social arenas. Be smart and sensitive before and during these
periods. Of the four Mercury retrogrades this year, the third one from
mid-August until early September will start in Virgo but conclude in Leo.
Look forward to emerging from the retrograde with many minor snags
untangled and more energy to charge ahead.
