Located just minutes off the Northway in the southern part of Essex County, NY Minerva has been a favorite year-round destination and base camp for Adirondack tourist’s since the late 1800’s. In fact, the word vacation was coined in the late 1800’s to mean people should vacate the cities and move to the mountains for fresh air and relaxation - exactly what Minerva offers tourists today. Founded by Farming families after the Revolutionary War, Minerva’s economic history includes iron mining, tanning, milling and logging. Today the focus is on tourism, recreational boat building and forest products. Minerva, which was incorporated in 1817, covers 162 square miles with over 60% of its land in the “forever wild” ADK Park Preserve. Visitors to Minerva will find that Minerva Lake, with its beautiful beach, playgrounds, pavilions, campground, bathhouse and food stand serves as the town hub of summer activities. The town-wide Minerva Day celebration culminates with a vibrant fireworks display at Donnelly Beach, and will take place on Saturday, July 1st. Check the Town website at www.townofminerva.com for additional details. When the lake Reach our advertisers at: freezes over each winter, visitors use the lake for ice fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The Hudson and Boreas Rivers flow through Minerva, providing recreational fishing, whitewater rafting and canoeing opportunities. Many top-rated hiking trails start and end in Minerva including hikes for Moxham Mountain, Stony Pond and Blue Ledges. ADK Park land acquisitions in 2013 added additional camping, hiking, biking, paddling, snowmobiling and horseback riding access to lands in northern Minerva which have not been open to the public for the past 100 years. Birders and other nature enthusiasts should keep Minerva on their radar screens for interesting sightings and species. Families with children enjoy Minerva Central School’s reputation for quality education and the Minerva Youth Program’s summer day camp. Notable Minerva residents have included Solomon Northup (12 Years a Slave) and internationally known educator Ella Lynch, as well as part time residents Ruth Bader Ginsburg (who attended Camp Che-Na-Wah) and Winslow Homer who stayed at the North Woods Club while painting most of his ADK works. The summer Concerts in the Park series will open its third season on June 14th with an encore performance by Double Vision, followed by the vocal stylings of Susan Richards July 12th ADKDiningGuide.com • ADKStoresandGalleries.com • ADKEntertainment.com • ADKAccommodations.com
