Change a few habits and plan ahead to increase 

your home security: 

1. Even when at home, ensure all doors and 

windows at the front of the house are shut or on a 

lock vent. Add a metal bar to the bottom track of 

sliding doors and windows to prevent them being 

forced open. 

2. Consider prickly bushes around your fence and 

borders to dissuade anyone climbing over. Holly, 

hawthorn, and climbing roses look attractive and 

deter trespassers. 

3. Be mindful of who you tell about your holiday 

plans and avoid mentioning them on social media. 

4. Protect your valuables by marking your postcode 

on them with an Ultra Violet pen 

5. If you install CCTV, take advice on positioning 

and maintenance to avoid grainy or incomplete 

images.

MY BUCKET LIST : ANOTHER TICK 

Who hasn’t got a bucket list ? I have just accomplished another 

ambition - to visit Jersey. 

This is a bit different from earlier endeavours – flying through 

the spray of Victoria Falls in a two seater plane – got the most 

amazing pictures, crossing the Dover Straits in a hovercraft – 

like being in a washing machine then nearly getting arrested for 

taking a photo on landing (that tale to be told another time), 

helicopter over the Rock in Australia and the Blackpool lights. 

Now in the mature years, a leisurely trip to the Channel Islands. 

We took off in a psychedelic coloured turboprop and after a quick 

view of symmetrical rows of estate houses in Southampton, we 

disappeared into the clouds. No sight of the sea and before we 

knew it, we were on the decent. Once on terra firma fantastic 

visibility the whole five days we were there. I resuscitated my 

photographic interest and the camera clicked away. 

The occupation plays a large part in the history of the island. 

There is an amazing tapestry exhibition newly opened. Visitors 

to the Tunnels are issued with a replica identity card of an 

inhabitant who had to register during the enemy invasion. 

“Who were you twinned with ?” asked a fellow tourist on the bus 

returning to our hotel. “I didn’t realise you had to get the details 

whilst there, now I will never know,” was my disappointed reply. 

Actually that was not the case and another hotel resident who 

was still to visit the Tunnels offered to find out the information. 

Grateful thanks to the helpful party of travellers who emailed the 

details back to me. 

The card linked me to a woman who, 

together with another member of her 

family, was arrested by the German 

Secret Police in late 1944 on charges 

of ‘unlawful possession of a wireless 

and camera.’ They had also sheltered 

a young Ukranian forced worker in 

their home. A death sentence was 

to be pronounced but the Bailiff of Jersey intervened and the 

sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. Wow, there is 

always something new to discover. 

Prior to my trip a colleague exclaimed, “You’re going to Jersey, 

lucky you. Don’t forget the potatoes and Black Butter.” 

Hiding my ignorance, I immediately googled Black Butter. It 

is an unusual relish / preserve / compote – the jury is still out 

on that but the recipe is exclusive to the island. The museum 

assistant told me, “We have a special day dedicated to the 

preparation of Black Butter. When the apple harvest comes in, 

everyone gathers and a huge pot is hung over a fire. Then the 

ingredients are added and stirred while the happy throng drink 

cider and make merry.” 

These age old customs sound wonderful ! I might add the 

chutney/sauce is most delicious - it goes marvellously with feta 

cheese but probably depends on individual taste. 

My new favourite filler is in my sandwich and the coffee is 

brewing, delicious ! Till next time ...

"For someone of..."

Well, as summer entered July, I thought that I should visit my 

doctor, for my usual annual check-up! 

“You’re fighting fit – for a woman of your age,” he said reassuringly. 

‘I what?’ I thought, ‘a woman of my age! When did that happen? A 

woman of my age, what age is that?. Well!’ I suppose I didn’t mind 

too much as he was a very nice doctor and quite good looking in a 

doctor kind of way! 

Next day I had an appointment to see the nurse regarding my 

weight, I have been on a diet for the last three months and to be 

honest I do feel better for it, especially now I can squeeze into my 

summer clothes. 

“Let’s see how much you have lost now, shall we? Oh yes, ten 

pounds. Well, that’s good for. . . someone of your age. It gets much 

harder as you get older!” The kindly nurse said. 

There it was again! When did I stop being normal to becoming 

someone of your age? No one told me! No one said at this birthday 

you become, A ‘someone of your age.’ When is this mysterious time? 

I went to the dentist and had a filling and was happy to hear, 

“Your teeth are good” ‘Great’ I thought, until he continued. 

“For someone of your age” ……. ‘No, not again!’ 

Last night, having had a week of medical appointments and being 

made to feel a lot older than I should, I went to the local pub with a 

few girlfriends (funny that title never changes to old lady friends, does

We got chatting to a group of unattached men. One of them singled 

me out, which I was rather pleased about as I had been attracted to 

him from the start. He said his name was Robert, he was a solicitor 

and worked in London. 

He was fifty five, and very attractive. I told him that he was a good 

few years younger than me, 

“You don’t look it. What’s a couple of years, anyway” he replied. He 

told me that he had been divorce for three years but his work took 

up much of his time so didn’t get the chance to have many social 

evenings. 

As the night came to an end, he asked me back to his for coffee, 

then, I did something most out of character. As one thing lead to 

another . . . . .(well you know!) This morning I woke up in his bed. 

“Good morning” I shyly offered, wanting to die with embarrassment. 

“Good morning darling,” he said. “Last night was amazing and for 

someone. . .” ‘No, please don’t say it I couldn’t bear it, not from you,’ I 

silently pleaded. 

“. . as lovely as you, wanting someone like me. I’m so glad that I 

found you” he said as he kissed me good morning!

KINDNESS - by Julia Meanwell

We constantly hear about 

what is going wrong with 

our world which makes it 

harder to remind ourselves 

that there is so much that 

is good. After recent tragic 

events, it is heartening to 

know that so many people 

are offering help of all kinds 

to those whose lives have 

been shattered through loss 

or injury. This outpouring 

of love for each other is 

such a positive message 

that has emerged from such 

abhorrent acts of hate. 

How much better it is to 

feel that you have helped 

someone along the way 

when you could have 

turned the other cheek 

and ignored their plight. 

A simple act of kindness 

can make someone’s day 

and ultimately yours too. 

Research shows that being 

kind to others increases our 

own levels of happiness so a 

simple act of kindness can 

not only make someone 

else’s day but can make us 

feel good too. 

Generosity of spirit releases 

endorphins in the brain 

and increases happiness for 

us as well as the people we 

are helping. Studies have 

shown that when we give 

money away it is more 

likely to make us feel happy 

than if we were to spend 

that money on ourselves. 

Communities thrive when 

people look out for each 

other; and even if your good 

deeds of helping others go 

unnoticed they can have the 

positive effect of increasing 

your self-esteem. 

American film maker David 

Gaz, made a documentary 

‘Kindness is Contagious’. 

The film is all about being 

kind and the benefits of 

being kind. The idea for this 

film began when research 

demonstrated that if you 

are kind to one person, they 

will be kind to four other 

people, and that each of 

those four people will be 

kind to four more people 

and so on. Eventually 

turning back around to 

you again which perhaps 

indicates that Karma does 

actually exist?

ALEXANDER 

WAY OF LIFE

By the time you read this, I shall have 

returned from a week on a narrow 

boat, going round the Warwickshire 

Ring, hence my choice of song title! 

I shared this experience with four 

others on a rather lovely 70ft boat 

called “Abbie”. Along with us was 

a party of six friends on another 

boat. I can highly recommend this 

as a relaxing, enjoyable way to spend 

some time. It was also a change from 

the way we live life normally. We 

were operating in a confined space 

for most of the time so if you decide 

to give it a go you would be wise to 

choose your companions carefully. 

With nothing much to do other 

than reading, Sudoku, admiring 

the view and working out where 

the next pub is, it got me thinking 

about how we think and behave 

differently in our reactions to 

unfamiliar situations. Firstly there is 

an instant camaraderie on the river. 

Everyone we passed said “Hello”. Try 

doing that down a street; you could 

get some odd looks. In Alexander 

terms we are always thinking about 

how we do our everyday activities 

(maximum effect with minimal 

effort) and we get used to being in a 

rush, or doing things quickly, rather 

than living in the moment. For a 

start you can’t go quickly on a canal 

“Messing about on the river” 

at around 2/3 mph, so any thought 

of rushing to the next task (or pub) 

is fruitless. Also there are locks to 

negotiate, controlling the water 

flow. Operating these used muscles 

I forgot I had. I had to think about 

how I did that task before I actually 

did it, as it could have played havoc 

with by back. 

Balance and co-ordination play a 

large part of my Alexander work. 

Balance in a boat? That’s a tricky 

one. I resisted the urge to tighten 

muscles and consciously thought 

about letting go of tension, which 

enabled me to feel more steady 

and secure. One particularly dark 

night I attempted to use a short cut 

to the boat, down uneven steps 

and through trees. With my mobile 

‘phone flashlight not working and 

no-one to offer assistance, it was 

interesting to note how vulnerable 

I felt to falling, having a history of 

broken bones and Osteoporosis. The 

reaction was to tense every muscle, 

which probably would have helped 

me to fall. I opted for a better lit, 

longer, but safer route. 

Do we ever have period where we 

just take in our surroundings and the 

moment without any interruptions? 

On a canal boat there are no 

distractions, no sounds other than 

birds and the engine humming. It 

is a restful experience for the body 

and the mind and I realised that 

I probably need to build in a little 

more of that in future. 

Living on a boat requires teamwork, 

awareness, careful preparation, 

physical activity and mental agility 

(“why is there smoke coming from 

the engine?” and “How are we 

going to steer the boat with the 

tiller bent the wrong way?” We 

managed to sort out both with help 

of an engineer!) All are qualities we 

want to maintain in our later years.

two favourites were ‘Ze Baaj’ and 

‘Still Dreaming’. The title song I 

remember from about thirty years

High Summer at Pashley Manor Gardens

Phoenix Gardening 

If you do have any trained fruit like espaliers or cordons 

late summer is the time to do summer pruning. As a 

general rule stone fruits peaches, plums, cherries, etc 

are pruned in the summer mid - June – July. This limits 

the chance of them becoming infected with Silver leaf 

disease which is a killing disease. Apples and pears are 

normally pruned in the winter. 

A final word on lawns, in a continued dry spell leave the 

grass longer if you have to cut it, if it is cut too short it 

will just get burnt. Or just leave it for a while.

In May this year we received an email from Juley Ross 

telling us about a poem written by her late mother, 

Jeanne Pitcher, who enjoyed reading Golden Times. 

Juley writes: 

The poem " Rain on the Tea Gardens" is very precious to 

our family and I'd love to tell you the fascinating story if I 

may. 

Mum and Dad spent many years in Norfolk although they 

were both from Eastbourne. For a couple of years they 

moved back to Hailsham, and one of their favourite haunts 

was the lovely tea gardens actually attached to Pevensey 

castle. Of course mum was inspired to write this lovely 

poem. It was framed and presented to the owners who 

proudly hung it in the restaurant. Sadly this premises was 

closed and was derelict for 8 years, happily re-opening 

last summer - 2016. I asked the new owners if they 

knew of the whereabouts of the poem, but sadly it had 

disappeared. Mum was by now in a nursing home, and 

last year I promised Mum I would take a new picture of the 

cafe, and present it to those new people. I arranged for the 

picture to be printed and framed. So sadly, my Mum took 

to her bed and passed away very quickly just before her 

birthday in October 2016. 

Mum was cremated at Langney nearby,and our 

lovely crowd of guests and family were able to have a 

magnificent afternoon tea at the Castle Team Rooms, 

where we presented the owners and staff with dear Mum's 

beautifully printed poem where it now proudly hangs

Raindrops, like tears, on the bright yellow 

pumpkins 

That grow in this garden down by the gate, 

Wet leaves that lend shelter to little brown 

sparrows, 

Stop searching for cake crumbs, they patiently 

wait. 

Ours are the footsteps, ours and no others, 

That sound on the red brick path to the door, 

And inside, hot tea, soft music and flowers, 

We look for new sunbeams on the Castle Cottage 

floor.

decided to launch a new section within 

the magazine aimed at Grandparents & 

Guardians. Nothing has given me as much 

pleasure over the past 20-odd years as my little army 

of grandchildren, and I'm sure the same applies to 

many readers of Golden Times magazine. 

With that in mind, we're aiming to provide a 

regular feature in the magazine aimed 

at "Grandparents and Guardians", 

basically any of our readers 

who enjoy spending time with 

youngsters. Whether you're looking 

after the kids while their mum and 

dad are at work, or just joining in with 

family days out at the weekends & in the 

holidays, we're hoping to provide you with ideas and 

inspiration. 

Even if you're not a hands-on grandparent (or greatgrandparent), 

there are still lots of ideas for places 

to visit and things to do, so we hope this little 

section will appeal to all of you. 

As well as events and services aimed at youngsters, 

we're aiming to also provide some interesting and 

informative articles relating to the senior members 

So, a slightly new role for me 

in the magazine from now on, 

I get to write the introduction 

to a little section devoted to 

my favourite pastime, 

spoiling my 

grandchildren. 

With all this new responsibility on 

my shoulders I'm going to need to 

treat myself every now and then, so I 

jolly well hope the management make 

an effort to find an extra pair of Mamma 

Mia! tickets for me ! 

I hope you all coped with the mini heat wave we 

had in June, we're fortunate to have the benefit of 

a cooling sea-breeze to take the edge off it, but 

nevertheless, it was wonderful to be able to take 

a long, countryside walk on the warmest summer

CONCERNED ABOUT YOUR GRANDCHILDREN? WHAT ARE YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS? 

Thank goodness for grandparents! In a 

world where working mothers are the 

norm, and nursery fees so expensive, so 

many families are supported and assisted 

by the grandparent. But when you 

unreservedly offer your love and support 

to your grandchildren, sometimes problems 

can arise. You need to know whether 

there are any legal rights you can claim as a 

grandparent and what processes may assist 

you in helping your grandchildren to keep 

them safe, secure and loved. 

Of course most families do not face these 

problems. However, what rights would 

you have if for instance you chose to take 

your grandchildren to Spain on holiday 

without their Mum and Dad? In English 

law the Children Act 1989 would normally 

be acknowledging that both Mum and 

Dad share parental responsibility for their 

children and therefore have the rights to 

make major decisions for their future such 

as in respect of where they live, where they 

are educated and what medical treatment 

they should receive. So, if you take your 

grandchildren abroad you need to have 

that authority to, for instance, address any 

medical problems that could arise whilst 

you are away. In this regard my advice 

would be for the mother and/or father to 

provide a letter indicating their agreement 

to you taking the children abroad. You may 

need this because if for instance there was a 

dispute and, say, an absent father objected 

to your rights to take the children abroad, 

you could be guilty of child abduction 

without knowing it. The same letter could 

also address the right of the parent to 

authorise you as a grandparent to exercise 

parental responsibility for the children whilst 

they are in your care. In some countries 

the document may best be produced by a 

lawyer in terms of a sworn statement so it 

is not contested. It is a practical situation 

which can easily be overlooked. I can recall 

an instance where as a practising solicitor I 

received a call from Athens Airport because 

the Greek authorities questioned the right 

of the childrens’ grandmother to take the 

children out of the country and back to 

the UK. This scenario caused considerable 

consternation and anxiety on the part 

of the grandparent and required faxed 

documentation to overcome the problem 

whilst the flight home was inevitably 

delayed. 

Sometimes the problems of a parent 

are so great that a grandparent has to 

play a much larger role in the lives of the 

grandchildren. This can sometimes be 

because of the poor health of a parent 

with care. In this situation if the parent 

is terminally ill the early preparation of 

a Will appointing legal guardians for the 

children who will then share the same level 

of parental responsibility as the parent 

making the Will is really important. The Will 

needs to be signed off whilst the parent still 

has the mental capacity to do so and the 

grandparent would then later take up the 

role of full-time carer holding the position 

of Legal Guardian. 

Sadly some families struggle to meet their 

childrens’ needs and thus Social Services 

become involved and address the risk of 

harm. In this instance grandparents can 

be the saviours for the children to remain 

in the family rather than be placed with 

foster parents and have limited contact 

with their biological family background. A 

grandparent in this instance would find 

themselves assessed by Social Services to 

see if their care for the children is viable. 

That assessment can be intrusive but in 

the interests of the children should be 

complied with in every respect. Sometimes 

these assessments take place without court 

involvement, but if proceedings are brought 

by the Local Authority to protect children 

under the Children Act 1989 then a Viability 

Assessment report of a grandparent would 

be vital to offer the court options for retaining 

the children within their birth family. If 

positive the court can then entertain the 

making of a Special Guardianship Order. 

Such an order is created by Section 14A of 

the Children Act 1989. Again, a court would 

expect a report from Social Services as to 

the suitability of the candidate to be the 

Special Guardian and produce a report that 

indicates what support may be given to that 

Special Guardian in caring for the child or 

children involved. This order can be made in 

any family proceedings in which a question 

arises with respect to the welfare of the 

child concerned. If the order is made the 

Special Guardian has parental responsibility 

for the child in question. However that 

Special Guardian has the right to exercise 

that parental responsibility to the exclusion 

of any other person with such responsibility 

such as the child’s natural parents. It is 

important to remember the context in 

which such an order might be made. If for 

instance the child’s mother has a problem 

with drugs or alcohol or a personality that 

has led to severe neglect it would be right 

for the Special Guardian to be in a position 

whereby to safeguard the child they can 

make the decision that carries sway over 

and above anyone else’s decision for that 

child. It is therefore a powerful right which 

can be given to a grandparent to provide 

safe and loving care for the grandchild. 

Back in 1989 Parliament decided to bring all 

the child rights together within one piece of 

legislation, the Children Act 1989. It does 

mean that a grandparent with concerns 

about a child can seek orders themselves 

if they are given special permission by the 

court to do so. In other words a grandparent 

can ask a court for a “Child Arrangements 

Order” directing that the child should live 

with them, rather than, for instance with 

their parent, if they are given permission 

by the court to pursue the application. The 

grandparent has to therefore provide a 

suitable explanation for why they consider 

they should seek such an order to change 

the care arrangements for the child in 

question. However before contemplating 

an application to the court the systems 

in Family Law now require those involved 

to consider mediating a solution. Family 

Mediation has grown in importance to 

the extent that the Ministry of Justice 

now direct that before an application in 

private law about a child can be pursued 

those involved should consider mediation 

and other alternative dispute resolution 

systems. 

A family solution without lawyers, without 

Social Workers but focused on the vulnerable 

grandchild is by far the best solution. If 

the family themselves find it difficult to 

resolve the problem Family Mediators are 

on-hand to assist you. It is not an easy 

process, it is certainly not a “talking shop” 

but a focused set of meetings designed to 

enable those involved to speak their minds 

and also appreciate the views of others and 

appreciate the benefits that the child will 

gain from knowing the arrangements for 

the child have been agreed by the family. 

As a Family Practitioner and Mediator 

may I say again “thank goodness for 

grandparents”.

Libraries across the UK are getting ready to 

introduce children to new worlds of facts and 

fiction through Animal Agents, the 2017 Summer 

Reading Challenge, run by independent charity 

The Reading Agency. 

Across the school summer holidays, Animal 

Agents will introduce young readers to a variety 

of clever creatures, specially trained to use their 

skills and natural instincts to unravel mysteries. 

Animal Agents is illustrated by Tony Ross, 

illustrator of the hugely popular Horrid Henry 

series. He is published all over the world; his 

awards and nominations include the Roald Dahl 

Funny Prize, Kate Greenaway Medal, and the 

Smarties Prize. 

Each year the Summer Reading Challenge to 

children is simple. They’re encouraged to read six 

or more books of their choice – fact books, joke 

books, picture books, audio books just as long 

as they are borrowed from the library – during 

the holidays. There are collectable incentives and 

rewards, plus a certificate for every child who 

completes the Challenge. Children can sign up at 

their local library from the end of June onwards 

and all materials are absolutely free. (NB: exact 

start dates for the Summer Reading Challenge 

can vary around the UK, as do schools‘ breaking 

up dates for the summer holidays: please check 

with your local library.) 

The Summer Reading Challenge is open to all 

primary school children and is designed for all 

reading abilities. Schools work with local libraries 

and give out information to encourage children 

to take part, and most libraries run Summer 

Reading Challenge linked early years activity for 

pre-schoolers. 

Here’s how you can get involved: 

Head to your local library during the summer 

holidays and enrol. It's completely free and any 

child can take part. Children can chat, get reading 

recommendations and enter competitions all year 

round on our Summer Reading Challenge website

and looking around early. Some

First impressions – Taking a 

tour of a nursery is often the 

best way to get a good picture 

of the setting and how they are 

run. Most nurseries are happy 

to show you around, giving you 

an excellent opportunity to get 

a feel for the atmosphere, staff 

and facilities. Most importantly 

you will see the children busy 

and at play. Take note of what 

activities and resources are on 

offer and the amount of outdoor 

space available. Watch how staff 

interact with children and talk 

to other parents/grandparents, 

if you have an opportunity. Ask 

about the structure of the day 

and importantly snacks and 

meals. Don't be afraid to take a 

pre-compiled list of questions and take notes. 

Practicalities - Check opening times and sessions 

offered. It is useful to know how flexible the nursery 

can be around these times and if they have spaces 

available now, and in the future, if extra sessions are 

needed. 

Costs will vary in settings, some charge by the hour, 

day or week. Make sure to also check for hidden 

costs – nappies, food etc. 

Childcare can be expensive, but there is help 

available. Some 2 year olds, and all 3- 4 year olds will 

be eligible for up to 15 hours a week free childcare.

You and your family will know what is right for your 

grandchild and which Nursery best meets their 

needs......trust your instincts and get ready to make

Everyone’s heard about 

Italian style, the perfect 

blend of elegance and 

ease. I’m lucky enough to 

spend every summer in Italy 

and every year I watch and 

wonder. Try as I might I’ll 

never achieve the casual 

glamour that Italian women 

– and men – carry off without 

a thought. As I set off for 

this year’s adventures, here 

I have, however, picked up a 

few habits and customs to help 

me blend in with the natives 

so if you are heading south, 

here are a few tips to help you 

live “la dolce vita”. 

Italian women layer—and 

top those layers off with an 

elegant exterior. For stylish 

Italian women, that means 

a chic jacket or trench coat. 

Even in the summer, you 

will rarely see a woman 

walking around town without 

something to swish around 

her shoulders. Cardigans 

just don’t cut it, so choose a 

lightweight structured shape 

to complement your outfit. 

Italian men prove that you 

don’t have to be going to 

work, or a wedding, to pull off 

a jacket. Pair one with white 

or beige trousers, or even 

jeans—and, of course, leather 

shoes—and you’re good to go 

to lunch… or a museum. Just 

don’t be surprised if you’re 

mistaken for an Italian while 

you’re there! 

A great pair of sunglasses is 

a must. Essential to protect 

your peepers in the sun, or 

just to look cool in the shade. 

Of course, Italians love their 

designer sunglasses—but any 

frame will help you blend in. 

Italians tend to wear basic 

blue jeans a lot less often than 

their counterparts elsewhere. 

It’s not that women are always 

in dresses (although they 

often are), and men in suits; 

it’s that when they do throw 

on trousers, they’re rarely 

basic jeans or chinos. Instead, 

trousers come in a rainbow of 

colours. And yes, that’s true 

for men too. 

Even at an informal lunch, 

men will wear an open-neck 

shirt tucked into well-cut, 

fitted trousers with a leather 

belt. Occasionally you’ll see 

tailored shorts but casual 

shorts are only for the garden 

or beach. Women still love 

capri pants – you can see 

Audrey Hepburn on every 

corner. 

Italian women accessorize. So 

if you’re keen to be mistaken 

for one, remember the little 

details: in the past year, 

chunky bracelets and collar 

necklaces have been trendy, 

but so are delicate necklaces 

and drop earrings. Wear 

whatever jewellery you like… 

but if you want to look like an 

Italian, do wear something! 

Scarves are especially great 

for travellers: they can spice 

up an outfit that you’ve 

already worn three days in a 

row and can be thrown into a 

bag to pull out when the sun 

sets and the weather gets 

chilly. 

Plus, in Italy, scarves can 

be even more useful, as 

it’s disrespectful (and often 

downright forbidden) to go 

into a church without your 

shoulders covered so having a 

scarf means you can risk bare 

shoulders. 

A chic handbag, for women— 

or a “man bag,” for men. 

Women carry big handbags 

during the day, and tiny 

ones a night. For men who 

really want to go local, they 

also have the option of a 

bag. Lots of Italians use 

messenger bags or briefcases. 

It especially makes sense 

when you think about how 

hard it is to transport your 

stuff while zooming around on 

your Vespa. So if you’ve ever 

wanted to try one out, a trip 

to Italy is a good time—we 

promise, not a single local will 

bat an eyelash. Ciao tutti!

On Saturday 8th July and Sunday 9th July 

from 11am - 6pm is the Mid-Summer Fish Fest. It’s 

a celebration of The Hastings Fishing Fleet, local 

restaurants, foods, wines and crafts. You can 

sample fresh fish dishes, locally brewed beers and 

English wines, learn some cooking tips from skilled 

seafood chefs and, because I’m involved, enjoy a 

great line up of music. I’ve booked a fabulous mix 

with 

of live music to suit all tastes.

putting the music on for this event and features 

11 superb bands, each musician playing for free 

(apart from a burger and a beer!) This event is 

in aid of The RNLI, The Pett Level Rescue Boat 

(self-financed) and The Hastings Sea Cadets 

(tomorrow’s Life Boat guys!). This is a FREE event, 

but you are asked to donate some money in our 

collector’s buckets, buy drinks and food from our 

bar and food outlets as our fund benefits from 

the profits. Each year we commision a bespoke 

T-Shirt designed by local artist Pete Smith. They 

do become collectors items - so get one early for 

only £9.99! The last two years we have managed 

to raise the brilliant amount of £21,350! This 

year in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 

Beatles Sgt.Pepper album we are featuring a live 

performance of the album as part of Sunday’s 

programme. A great weekend start to Hastings
