Viganj<br />

This small settlement with<br />

a 17th-century Dominican monastery<br />

unfolds around the Bay of<br />

Viganj, backed by the Pelješac<br />

mountains <strong>and</strong> looking out to the<br />

isl<strong>and</strong> of Korula. Windsurfers<br />

flock to this picturesque spot for<br />

Vid<br />

Inhabited by both Greeks<br />

<strong>and</strong> Romans, Vid thrived as a<br />

trading post between the isl<strong>and</strong>s<br />

<strong>and</strong> the hinterl<strong>and</strong> until the 7th<br />

ilipi<br />

With regular folk events <strong>and</strong><br />

an ethnographic museum, ilipi is<br />

on the tour circuit from <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>.<br />

On Sundays during high season<br />

the presence of performers in<br />

traditional costumes brightens<br />

Orašac<br />

This pleasant village 15 km<br />

(9 miles) north of <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> has<br />

a fine 15th-century church <strong>and</strong> a<br />

palatial 16th-century villa. Its small<br />

marina <strong>and</strong> decent beach face<br />

Lumbarda<br />

Located to the east of Korula<br />

Town, this pretty settlement lures<br />

visitors with its s<strong>and</strong>y beaches<br />

(see p43) <strong>and</strong> secluded coves,<br />

as well as the water sports on<br />

Baina Lakes<br />

These six interlinked freshwater<br />

lakes just north of Ploe are<br />

an impressive sight. Surrounded<br />

by lush vegetation, they provide<br />

a habitat for a plethora of fish<br />

Kula Norinska<br />

Dating from the 16th century,<br />

this seven-storey cylindrical tower<br />

at the junction of the Norin<br />

<strong>and</strong> Neretva rivers has formerly<br />

served as both a military lookout<br />

Trpanj<br />

The Pelješac Peninsula’s<br />

north coast is the picturesque<br />

setting for a small resort with<br />

a pebble beach <strong>and</strong> a cluster of<br />

Trstenik<br />

On the west coast of the<br />

Pelješac Peninsula you can visit<br />

relaxed Trstenik, with old stone<br />

houses <strong>and</strong> a sheltered harbour.<br />

Protected by the hills that rear<br />

up behind it, the village has<br />

seaward views of Mljet <strong>and</strong><br />

Janjina<br />

This compact village, with an<br />

ornate church, tumbles down the<br />

Pelješac hillside towards the sea.<br />

It’s a great place to pick up wine<br />
