Fort of St Nicholas,<br />

Guarding the entrance to the<br />

fortress dates back to the 16th<br />

St John’s Fortress,<br />

This star-shaped fortification,<br />

once a bulwark against the<br />

Ottomans (it survived a threeweek<br />

siege in 1647), rises 155 m<br />

Founded in the 17th century<br />

by Bosnian monks fleeing the<br />

Ottomans, this is the largest<br />

Serbian Orthodox monastery<br />

Biograd Na Moru is today a<br />

low-key resort with an attractive<br />

waterfront <strong>and</strong> a spacious<br />

marina. In summer water sports<br />

Lake Vrana<br />

Situated just outside Biograd<br />

Na Moru, the largest lake in<br />

Croatia is over 13 km (8 miles)<br />

long. It is connected to the<br />

Adriatic via a system of underground<br />

channels <strong>and</strong> is home to<br />
