St. Catherine Catholic Church Karen Clogston When George Sebring founded the city in 1912, he said no city would be successful without a strong religious foundation. With that in mind, he donated land to establish a variety of churches and at least one synagogue. Highlands County has approximately 110 houses of worship listed online — with more congregations meeting in new locations every year, such as community clubhouses, public meeting rooms or private residences. At least half meet in the greater Sebring area, offering special programs for couples, families, youth and senior citizens. Real Estate Highlands County offers a variety of housing options for new residents with any taste or financial situation, including downtown and suburban rental apartments, duplexes, townhouses and houses, as well as condominiums, houses and mobile homes for sale. There are homes with or without lawns — self or association maintained — as well as homes on golf courses, canals or lakes — with or without acreage. The county has three downtown areas — Avon Park, Sebring and Lake Placid — along with several subdivisions and golf course communities. The largest subdivision, which has two golf courses, recreation facilities and a board of supervisors is Sun ’n Lake Special Improvement District, situated between Sebring and Avon Park along U.S. 27. Other planned communities include Spring Lake, the Country Club of Sebring, Highlands Ridge and Golf Hammock. Retirement communities also offer maintenance-free living for adults 55 and older with recreational amenities such as golf, tennis and shuffleboard, along with a clubhouse hosting regular events and transportation services to go out into the greater community.
