Arts & Culture The quality of life in Florida’s Heartland is enhanced by a diversity of cultural amenities. Right here in Sebring and Highlands County, art exhibits, art shows, crafts fairs and performing arts presentations contribute to a lively cultural atmosphere. Highlands Art League offers a multitude of classes in painting, sculpture and crafts for all ages. The annual Fine Arts and Crafts Festival in November in Downtown Sebring draws attendees and vendors from around the state and nation. HAL also hosts an Artist of the Month reception the second Friday of each month, often coinciding with special downtown events. In addition, Highlands Museum of the Arts, which neighbors Highlands Little Theatre, has an ongoing schedule of art exhibits. The Heartland Cultural Alliance is another group for artists, featuring a gallery with rotating exhibits at the Sebring Regional Airport. Located near the center of downtown is the Allen Altvater Cultural Center, which encompasses MOTA, HLT, Sebring Public Library and the Sebring Historical Society. Performing arts and live theater are well represented by HLT, an organization of committed volunteers who present the highest quality in musical, variety and dramatic theater on a year-round schedule. MUSEUMS Museum of Florida Art and Culture 600 W. College Drive, Avon Park 863-784-7240 | www.mofac.org Located at South Florida State College, this museum boasts several permanent and traveling exhibits that will delight those who are interested in the culture of our area. Permanent exhibits include displays on the archeology and history of Florida. Highlands Art League Yellow House Gallery Sebring Historical Society 321 W. Center Ave., Sebring 863-471-2522 | www.sebringhistoricalsociety.org While not technically a museum, the archives at the Sebring Historical Society are open to the public for research. There are some artifacts on display, but the main repository is photos and archived print materials. Highlands Museum of the Arts 351 W. Center Ave., Sebring 863-385-6682 | www.highlandsartleague.org/mota As part of “The Village Where Art Lives,” the Highlands MoTA features curated exhibits, both permanent and traveling. Art competitions and receptions are held in the building, while classes are featured in the other three buildings in the complex. Museum of Florida Art and Culture Kile Brewer The Alan Jay Wildstein Center for the Performing Arts, on the campus of South Florida State College, is a 1,460-seat, state-of-the-art venue on a level seldom seen in a community of our size. SFSC is also home to the Museum of Florida Art and Culture, home to an extensive collection of art and artifacts, including the famed Highwayman paintings. Picturesque railroad stations are home to historical museums in nearby Avon Park and Lake Placid. The historic Sebring railroad station, still in use for daily Amtrak service, has undergone restoration and has again become a favorite place to visit or just to watch the trains come and go. The Military Sea Services Museum honors the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard with hundreds of artifacts, flags, ship and plane photos, uniforms and more. It also has the U.S.S. Highlands Room, which displays items from the ship named for Highlands County. The museum’s mission is to preserve and maintain the customs and traditions of the three military sea services. Civilian Conservation Corps Museum 5931 Hammock Road, Sebring 863-386-6094 | www.floridastateparks.org The CCC Museum is inside the gates of Highlands Hammock State Park and paid entrance into the park is required. Celebrating the Civilian Conservation Corps, which built many state parks nationwide during the 1930s, the museum building was actually constructed by the CCC. Military Sea Services Museum 1402 Roseland Ave., Sebring 863-385-0992 | www.milseasvcmuseum.org This museum is the only museum in the United States to honor the men and women of the Navy, Marines and Coast Guard who went to sea on behalf of our country. Items on display include uniforms, models of ships and other artifacts on permanent display to the public. HCA Galleries of Fine Art 128 Authority Lane (Sebring Regional Airport) 863-402-8238 | www.heartlandculturalalliance.org/ The HCA gallery at the Sebring Regional Airport is a constantly changing art museum that exhibits work of select local artists as one-person or group shows throughout the season.
