66. Failed Directional Gyro Approaches<br />

● Begin when<br />

established on a<br />

published portion of<br />

approach or cleared<br />

for the approach, or<br />

on radar vectors to<br />

final.<br />

● End at transition to<br />

landing environment<br />

or applying power to<br />

execute a missed<br />

approach/climbout.<br />

● IP initiates the<br />

failed directional<br />

gyro situation by<br />

pulling the HSI<br />

circuit breaker.<br />

● Performs IAW the FTI/INAV<br />

procedures and the applicable<br />

FAR/AIM.<br />

● ILS final: Maintains within ¾<br />

deflection (±3 dot width) of<br />

localizer and glideslope;<br />

maintains airspeed ±10 KIAS.<br />

● PAR approach: Does not exceed<br />

“well above/below glidepath” or<br />

“well left/right of course” and<br />

complies with the controller’s<br />

instructions in a timely manner.<br />

● Immediately initiates the missed<br />

approach procedure at DH, if<br />

applicable.<br />

● Executes the maneuver IAW current<br />

FTI and NATOPS procedures in a<br />

timely manner.<br />

● TACAN/VOR failed card: IAF to<br />

MAP, begins timing within<br />

±5 seconds if appropriate,<br />

±10 KIAS of approach airspeed,<br />

FAC ±5° and/or ±¾ deflection<br />

(±3 dot width).<br />

● Arrives at the MDA prior to MAP<br />

in a safe position to make a<br />

normal visual descent to land.<br />

● Maintains MDA +100/-0 feet.<br />

● Executes the missed approach<br />

procedure when applicable for the<br />

intended runway.<br />

● Radar Approaches: Does not<br />

exceed “well left/right of<br />

course” and complies with the<br />

controller’s instructions in a<br />

timely manner.<br />

● Does not exceed full SRT or half<br />

SRT as appropriate for the<br />

segment of the approach.
