MPU Ultrasonic
Gas Flowmeters
MPU 200, 600, 800 and 1200
The FMC Technologies MPU series
of Ultrasonic Gas Flowmeters
advance ultrasonic metering
technology to its highest form.
The MPU 1200 six-path, MPU 800
four-path and three-path MPU 600
meters are designed to handle the
requirements as stand-alone meters
or can be incorporated into com-
plete metering stations. A single
path meter, the MPU 200, is
available for applications with
lower accuracy requirements to
fill out the full complement of
ultrasonic product offering.
the new FMC Technologies
MPUs offer numerous
advantages over existing technologies
• FMC offers single (MPU 200), 3-path
(MPU 600), 4-path (MPU800) or 6-path
(MPU 1200) transducer pairs to fit a variety
of applications
• Our 4-path MPU 800 is the latest addition to
our successful gas ultrasonic product line and
has the best repeatability and is the most
rugged meter in the industry
• The FMC MPU series provides up to 60 percent
cost, space and weight savings compared to
conventional gas metering devices
• New programming for the MPUs provide
superior ultrasonic digital signal processing
and produces accurate and reliable
data despite noise levels 10 times higher
than can be read and measured by
similar equipment
• The new non-intrusive, flush-mounted sensor
design eliminates pressure loss across the
meter which reduces requirements for
additional pumping pressure and results in
lower energy gas transportation costs
• Our 6-path MPUs can profile both axial and
transversal flow to account for any swirl and
cross flow velocities and provide higher
accuracy and greater flow turndown ratios
than conventional gas metering equipment
• The FMC MPU’s fully titanium encapsulated
150,000 hours MTBF transducers can be
replaced on site without loss of reading
under normal operating conditions
• Large memory capacity has been built into
the system log to store audit trail measure-
ment, eliminating the need for additional
external devices at small or remote installations
• Built-in system redundancy compensates in
the event that one path fails
Transducer and cable protection
covers are standard for UL/CUL units but
are optional for ATEX units
• Advanced self-diagnostic software notifies on-site or remote operators of any abnormal
events, then compensates for it when possible while maintenance is being deployed. The
software also allows the manufacturer to remotely run diagnostics and intervene, if desired
The FMC MPU Series is built for long-term
reliability and easy system integration
A standard MPU consists of an ANSI flanged spool piece with body and flanges in carbon
steel. Depending upon the application, a variety of special body/flange materials and alterna-
tive flange types/sizes can be provided. In addition, a number (according to model type
number) of field removable/replaceable ultrasonic sensors are mounted into the flowmeter
body, each individually connected to the MPU electronics box mounted on top of the unit,
where all other field connections are made.
FMC’s MPU electronics package allows the meter to be interfaced with a wide variety of
field or control room mounted equipment, such as temperature and pressure sensors, flow
computers, gas chromatographs, SCADA systems, and of course, laptop and other computer
systems used at the time of installation and in later reconfigurations or diagnostic work.
• First to introduce multiple paths in the same plane
resulting in direct measurement of secondary flow
effects like swirl and cross flow. In fact we are still
the only manufacturer to offer this.
• First to offer flow profile factors, both for perfor-
mance monitoring, diagnostics and for performance
compensation in case of path failures.
• First to introduce flow profile monitoring and
presentation, both in the axial direction and in the
transverse direction.
FMC Technologies Gas Ultrasonic
product line offers the most
rugged and dependable meters
on the market
• First to offer Ethernet connection for fast, trouble
free connection from any computer – and for
remote dial-up via the Internet.
• First manufacturer to offer the industry ultrasonic
flow meters for gas and oil applications, both
based on the same technology.
• First to introduce complex signal coding for very
advanced signal processing, especially applicable
in noisy environments or in acoustically noisy
installations.
• First to offer direct connection and database handling
of fluid composition from gas chromatographs.
FMC Technologies is the first in the industry
to develop a fourth generation gas ultrasonic
meter; compared to traditional gas metering
systems, the MPU provides optimum solution
with respect to performance versus cost for
gas system applications
MPU WinScreen Configuration and
Diagnostic Software
WinScreen is a visual interface to the MPU’s electronics
that is utilized during meter setup, operation and diagnostics.
Because all the meter’s parameters are resident within its
electronics package, WinScreen is used for setup at the factory,
during flow calibration, and during installation and commissioning
at customer locations. When installed in the field, its
flexible interface allows remote operator access for safe and
efficient meter diagnostics and reporting.
WinScreen’s self-diagnostic capabilities produce historical,
event, operator change and error alarm logs for tracking and
follow-up purposes. It also generates database reports displaying
all data parameters including software check sums that can
be used to make quick checks on setup and operation, ensuring
superior and consistent meter accuracy and performance.
