Choosing your venue

You will find details of the featured venues on pages 22 to 27. A complete list of all approved venues in
Cheshire West and Chester can be found on pages 28 to 31 together with their contact details including their
website address.
When choosing your venue there are a few things that you may like to consider:
• Can the licensed ceremony rooms at your preferred venue easily accommodate all of your guests?
• If you’re planning an evening ceremony will the venue be open at the time when you want your
ceremony? (our registrars are available day and night, but your venue may not be)
• If you want an outdoor ceremony (see page 12) does the venue have a suitable area in its grounds
where your ceremony could take place?
Once you’ve chosen your venue and settled on the date and your preferred time, please book your registrars as
soon as possible.

Booking the registrars
Booking the registrars couldn’t be easier - simply ring our
dedicated ceremonies officer
Telephone: 0300 123 7037.
You can book your registrars up to three years in advance.
Our registrars are popular so the earlier you contact us the
more likely we’ll have registrars available for your chosen day
and time.
A small non-refundable fee is taken to secure your booking.
This amount will be deducted from the overall payment for your
ceremony.
Our registrars are usually available at any time and seven days
a week, including bank holidays.

Your ceremony
Two registrars will attend your
ceremony, one to perform the
ceremony and the other to register
the event and issue your certificate.
We want to do everything we can
to help you create a ceremony that
is perfect for you. Our experienced
registrars are able to offer guidance
on how to personalise and enhance
your ceremony, perhaps by
including some favourite readings
or selections of poetry. You may
want to make personal declarations
to one another either by choosing
from a wide range of available
options or by writing your own.
Whatever you choose, we’ll be
available to help you every step of
the way.

The legal preliminaries
Notices of marriage
When you book the registrars our
ceremonies officer will explain
how to complete the legal
preliminaries. This will involve
each of you attending in person
in the registration district where
you live to complete a ‘notice of
marriage’. Notices of marriage
are valid for 12 months and are
made public, usually by being
displayed for 28 days in your
local register office.
Documents
You will be asked to produce
official documents in order for the
notices to be produced. Usually
these are:
• evidence of identity, age and
nationality – ideally a passport
• any change of name
documents, where appropriate
• proof of residence in the form
of a recent utility bill or other
official document that shows
your current address
• you will also be asked to
provide evidence of how any
previous marriage ended. If
you are under 18, parental
consent will also be required.
Foreign nationals
There are special procedures for
non EEA (European Economic
Area) nationals who are subject to
immigration control. If this applies
to either of you, please contact
your local register office for
further advice before making any
ceremony arrangements.

Outdoor ceremonies
Many of our venues are surrounded by stunning views, with
attractive gardens and water features which would make an
ideal setting for an outdoor wedding. In Cheshire West and
Chester you can choose to hold your perfect ceremony in a
range of magical locations – from a secluded woodland glade
to the edge of a tranquil lake.
We have developed a comprehensive guide for couples wishing
to have an outdoor ceremony. This ensures that all the legal
requirements are met while allowing you to tailor the ceremony
to your own personal preferences.

Arrival
If your ceremony is taking place in
a licensed venue the registrars will
arrive approximately 30 minutes
before the ceremony is due to start.
Please arrive on time, allowing for
any photographs to be taken. If you
are late it may not be possible to
conduct your ceremony.
Music

Music enhances any occasion and
your registrar will be happy to offer
advice about when your choice of
music, either recorded or live, could
be played.

Confetti
Please check with the venue if
there are restrictions on throwing
confetti at the end of the
ceremony. As an alternative to
confetti you might like to consider
biodegradable dried rose petals
as an eco-friendly option.
Photos and videos
Your guests are very welcome
to bring cameras to record the
occasion. If you would like advice
your registrar will be happy
to advise when is best to take
photographs and videos.
Number of guests
Each venue has a limit on the
number of people that can be
comfortably accommodated in
their ceremony rooms. If you are
unsure of how many guests may
attend your ceremony please
check with the venue before you
send out your invitations.
Witnesses
Two witnesses are required for
marriage ceremonies. They can
be friends or relatives, usually
over 16 years of age and able to
understand the ceremony. They
will be asked to sign the marriage
register and their names will
be included on your marriage
certificate.

Fees
Booking fees
When you secure your ceremony we will take a small fee to
book the registrars for your chosen date and time. This fee will
be deducted from the overall amount due for your ceremony,
but is non-refundable in the event of a cancellation.
Ceremony fees
The fee for the two registrars to attend your ceremony is payable
no later than six weeks before the day of the wedding. For

The simplest and most convenient way to pay for your ceremony
is online via the Cheshire West and Chester website.

sound system and a display of fresh flowers.

Renewal of Vows
This ceremony is the perfect
opportunity for you and your
partner to reaffirm your love and
commitment.
Renewing your vows can take
place at any stage of your life
but may coincide with a special
occasion such as an anniversary.
The ceremony is also a wonderful
way to include family and friends
in your celebrations e.g. after
marrying overseas.
Our friendly registrars can help
you devise the content of your
ceremony including poetry and
readings or promises of love and
support.
Naming Ceremony
A naming ceremony is a modern
way for parents, relatives and
friends to celebrate the arrival
of a new child or to welcome an
adopted or step child into the
family.
You can include as many children
as you wish and of any age. The
ceremony can also be arranged
to take place after a marriage or
renewal of vows.
Grandparents, close relatives and
friends may be involved in the
ceremony to offer their support
and encouragement for your child
and your family.
Renewal of vows and naming
ceremonies usually take place:
• at any of our approved venues
• in our register offices
• at private homes and gardens.
