lives of 800,000 people? Initiated by 

CENSE in 2012, Operasi Tataba aims to 

help the Kadazandusun Murut of Sabah 

gain access to the 21 st century without 

losing their heritage and sense of self. 

The initiative encompasses economic, 

social and educational aspects. 

Our editorial team journeyed to the 

interiors of Sabah to chronicle the 

experiences of project implementors and 

record testimonies of beneficiaries— 

providing readers with a behind-thescenes 

look at a success story in 

self-empowerment. We also worked with 

partners to produce a supporting short 

documentary on Operasi Tataba.

This is the second edition of our 

very first book, commissioned by the 

Ministry of Women, Family & Community 

Development. 

The book’s objective was to celebrate 

the achievements of Malaysian women 

in every field of endeavour: politics, 

film, literature, heritage, finance, sports, 

science, music, law and much more. 

One of our hardest tasks was deciding 

on the parameters of the lists of women 

to include, for while we accepted that it 

was nearly impossible to make the lists 

definitive, they nevertheless had to be 

representative.

The first edition of SHE: A Tribute to the Women of Malaysia was made 

available in bookstores in 2006 and sold out not long after. The second

details the events and challenges 

involved in establishing the Urban 

Development Authority, first as a public 

department and finally as a corporate 

entity. 

Our client’s instruction to execute 

the book in both English and Bahasa 

Malaysia posed a design challenge as 

both languages needed to be presented 

side-by-side in an accessible manner. 

We also had to capture, in both words 

and pictures, the architectural breadth 

and historical scope of UDA’s activities in 

the last four decades.

Conservation Alliance for Tigers, 

Maybank approached us to produce a 

book to celebrate the Malayan Tiger. 

Majestic Stripes examines ongoing 

conservation efforts as well as the 

tiger’s iconic role in the country’s 

consciousness. 

We included specially-commissioned 

illustrations in watercolour, pencil and 

ink as an important visual element of the 

book.

Forever Green: A Sustainable Future with 

Deramakot won the Best Luxury Book 

Award in the Nature Heritage Category 

at the National Book Awards 2012. This 

book gave us the opportunity to chronicle 

Malaysia’s role in establishing one of the 

oldest and most successful models of 

sustainable forestry management in the 

world. 

To document work on the ground through 

interviews and photography, we sent a 

team to Sabah, where they spent days 

in the tropical rainforest and faced 

unexpected challenges such as attacks 

from wild bees.

As the investment holding arm of the 

Government of Malaysia, Khazanah 

Nasional Berhad has been actively 

involved in the cultural and intellectual 

development of the nation. Their annual 

lecture series and conferences have 

always been a big part of this objective. 

In 2007/2008, Khazanah turned it up a 

notch to celebrate 50 years of Merdeka 

and invited speakers such as Carlos 

Ghosn, Dr Mohammad Yunus and Kofi 

Annan to these events. 

A Year in Pictures brought together 

transcripts of the talks, speeches 

and selected Q & A sessions, and 

essentially documented the Khazanah 

Global Lectures, the Khazanah National 

Development Seminar, and the Khazanah 

Megatrends Forum.

As Malaysia prepared to celebrate its 

50 th year of independence, Sime Darby 

Berhad approached us for a book that 

would explore the country’s history, 

and that Sime Darby could present as a 

birthday gift of sorts to the nation. 

A Malaysian-based diversified 

multinational formed in 1910, Sime 

Darby’s rich history intertwined 

with the country’s major milestones 

(especially with its involvement in key 

growth sectors such as plantations and 

property), so the book had to integrate 

the company’s key highlights into the 

story.

The result was a 232-page coffee table book that traced the story of Malaya

figures, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali 

had always been widely covered in the

alongside Tun Dr Hasmah to shape the 

material into six parts, reflecting her

working with the former Prime Minister.

won the Bestselling Book Award 2011

25 th anniversary, this book offered 

readers a comprehensive overview of the 

state of housing in Malaysia. The housing 

landscape remains a complex one,

The 34 authors comprised contributors 

from the Government, private sector, 

academia, and civil society. We were 

tasked with ensuring that authors met 

their deadlines for submitting drafts, 

editing authors’ submissions, and 

conceptualising a visual style with which 

to present the many charts and graphs.

compilation of essays by some of 

Malaysia’s leading minds. 

We worked closely with the 31 writers – 

who ranged from G.K. Rama Iyer, Zarinah 

Anwar and Musa Hitam to Nicol David, 

Amir Muhammad and Dr Mohd Asri 

Zainul Abidin – each of whom had to 

submit an essay on a topic within their 

field of experience tied to the overall 

theme of national development. Besides 

managing the writer’s deadlines, we 

also worked with the Khazanah team 

to ensure editorial consistency and 

developed a stylish layout design to 

visually package the text-driven book.

Since 2006, we have worked with UNICEF 

Malaysia to produce a series of media 

guides and handbooks to help journalists 

report on issues accurately and 

responsibly. Using our own experience 

in the media, we worked at bridging the 

language gaps between UNICEF and 

reporters by packaging the information in 

parcels that we felt would resonate with 

them. 

The issues we have covered include 

Avian influenza, HIV & AIDS and 

children’s rights. Produced originally 

in English, most of the media guides 

were eventually translated into Bahasa 

Malaysia, Mandarin and Tamil.

we were asked to produce a corporate 

profile that would tell the company’s story 

and showcase its founder’s potential as 

an entrepreneur who can take things 

one step further. We balanced the two 

components and decided to earmark 

the company as a gateway to Asia’s 

mobile space – something we hope 

made it unique in a sea of other budding 

companies. 

The profile was also shaped liked an 

iPad to mimic one of the most important
