The following are general statements of qualities and skills useful for the work of each strategy described<br />
in the Resource Guide. They are guidelines that may be helpful when organizing or hiring staff.<br />
Staff members suitable for developing learning materials are:<br />
■ able to think creatively about new ideas and ways of presenting information<br />
■ good at imagining new ideas and visualize what does not yet exist<br />
■ able to summarize information and present it in a clear and understandable way<br />
■ skilled in working with community members to develop materials<br />
■ able to think in images as well as words<br />
■ able to have an eye for artistic detail<br />
■ interested in visual and creative arts<br />
■ able to research a variety of materials around them and apply what they learn<br />
■ fluent in the local language(s)<br />
Staff members suitable for capacity building are:<br />
■ experienced and believe in using participatory methodology<br />
■ comfortable in front of groups and enjoy working with people<br />
■ able to learn quickly from their experiences<br />
■ willing and able to take risks in learning situations<br />
■ skillful listeners<br />
■ able to summarize information<br />
■ patient and able to respect other people’ s learning processes<br />
■ fluent in the language(s) of training participants<br />
■ flexible and able to present information in a variety of ways based on participants’ needs<br />
Staff members suitable for media and events are:<br />
■ good at tapping into community resources<br />
■ able to organise various segments of the community to come together for a given event or issue<br />
■ articulate in discussing violence and women’s rights<br />
■ able to develop connections and familiarity with the local government and bureaucracy<br />
■ able to develop relationships with influential journalists and editors<br />
■ skilled in tapping into the local and national media networks to influence coverage<br />
■ able to exercise good judgment when making public statements about the organisation and its work<br />
Staff members suitable for advocacy are:<br />
■ articulate and able to present their views in persuasive language<br />
■ able to operate in a politically sensitive manner<br />
■ able to develop relationships with decision-makers<br />
■ knowledgeable about the broader politics surrounding domestic violence<br />
■ familiar with relevant international treaties, national laws, and policies<br />
■ sufficiently forceful in their personality to have influence<br />
■ diplomatic<br />
■ credible within the networks in which they work<br />

■ well known and trusted in the local community<br />
■ familiar with the local customs and ways of doing things<br />
