Lightweigting
Surface Metrology
Lightweighting is used to reduce the mass of large optics, and thus reduce the size of the support
mechanism required, this can also allow the support mechanism to be more dynamic.
To do this requires skill and understanding of both optic and mount to eliminate the possibility of
distortion in the final system.
Using Finite Element Analysis our engineers can define how much material can be removed whilst
maintaining the integrity of the optical surface. This is done with sympathy to the optical supports
and mounting arrangement. Mass reductions of up to 70% are possible in this way.
Glyndwr Innovations has CNC milling capability to produce the lightweighting on smaller parts.
The team has completed the design of light-weighted optics for airborne and space applications.
