Lightweigting Surface Metrology Lightweighting is used to reduce the mass of large optics, and thus reduce the size of the support mechanism required, this can also allow the support mechanism to be more dynamic. To do this requires skill and understanding of both optic and mount to eliminate the possibility of distortion in the final system. Using Finite Element Analysis our engineers can define how much material can be removed whilst maintaining the integrity of the optical surface. This is done with sympathy to the optical supports and mounting arrangement. Mass reductions of up to 70% are possible in this way. Glyndwr Innovations has CNC milling capability to produce the lightweighting on smaller parts. The team has completed the design of light-weighted optics for airborne and space applications. Case Studies The team have undertaken many projects , some of these are highlighted below. Satellite Optics Test System To design and build a modular transfer function test system for the Imaging system on an earth imaging satellite. The Imaging system for the satellite comprises an arrangement of lenses, mirror, camera and optical imaging components. The complete assembly weighs over 400Kg. The test system would be used to perform a verification test on the assembled imaging system to verify the alignment of all the optics and prove the system was working to specification before being assembled into the main satellite. Whilst complete motion of the unit was only in the order of 4 degrees, each movement had to have sub-minute of arc accuracy with no hysteresis. This was achieved with the use of flexures and a servo based actuators. Y X Prototype Segments for ESO E-ELT Glyndwr Innovations successfully produced 4 prototype 1.4m mirror segments for the 39m Extremely Large Telescope ESO will build. The goal of this project was to develop production processes and testing techniques required for the production of 931 mirror segments required for the E-ELT. Each hexagonal mirror segment was polished to a surface accuracy of
