Welcome to the final issue of the
CSA Journal for 2016. This is
a special issue as it announces
the 2017 CSA Congress, March 18, 2017.
The President's Page (opposite) discusses
the Congress in detail. Be sure to
register now to get the Early Bird rate.
A registration form is at the back of
this issue, and downloadable from the
CSA website. Online registration is also
available at www.cymbidium.org.
As many are aware, the cymbidium
world lost two of the pillars of our
community in the last year, Ernest
Hetherington and Tony Velardi. Ernest
has been celebrated by the CSA over
the years; notably the March/April 2008
issue of the CSA Journal was devoted to
honoring him. Dr. Randall Robinson
will continue that celebration by talking
about Ernest's "Challenge to Us All", as
the dinner speaker at the Cymbidium
Congress.
The CSA Board recently decided to
honor Tony & Gina Velardi by endowing
an annual lecture at the CSA Congress
in their name. The Velardi Memorial
Lecture will be given each year at the
Congress which will honor the many
contributions Tony & Gina made to
cymbidium growing, hybridizing, judging,
education, and to the CSA itself.
Anyone wishing to contribute to the
fund in memory of Tony & Gina may do
so by sending your contribution to the
CSA Treasurer (see more information on
page 6).
It is time once again to renew your
membership for 2017. We talk about
membership renewals a lot in this journal,
because of course, you, our members,
are important to the success of the
CSA. I hope that you have noticed the
organization changing and improving
in the last year--certainly the Board
of Directors has been working hard to
make that happen. Please renew your
membership soon, in order to keep the
2017 issues of the journal coming your
way. Better yet, go to www.cymbidium.
org and renew your membership at the
same time as you register for the 2017
Congress!

Special thanks to Don Brown, who
suggested that I reach out to Holger Perner
for the article that we are publishing here,
"Propagation of Oriental Cymbidiums".
It is an updated version of an article that
Holger previously published in a scholarly
journal. Thank you also to the AOS, and
Ron McHatton, for giving us permission
to republish Emma Menninger's article
"Parishii Regained", and to Wm. Jeff
Trimble who gives us an updated view of
the state of parishii.
