term adverse effects), and we have challenged ourselves in unprecedented ways with myriad sources
of distraction and menaces to our health.
We have never been more stressed, and we have never been more disconnected both from
ourselves and from one another. Our central nervous systems were not intended to handle such an
overwhelming number of tasks, and as a result we are suffering from unprecedented levels of anxiety
and various other afflictions and diseases. Left with little or no time to dedicate to our own selves,
our bodies, and our energy—we are depleting ourselves. With each day that passes the increasing
volume of electromagnetic frequencies produced by our various electrical and WiFi devices further
destabilizes us, scrambling and disrupting our subtle bodies and interfering with our body-mind’s
self-healing mechanisms.
Moreover, with all our dependence on—I would argue, our addiction to—technology, we are also
frittering away our energy by investing countless hours every day in activities that have no longevity
and no legacy. The time we spend “posting” and “tweeting” is time we will never retrieve. The
Internet is an extraordinary tool, but, abused, it is too often a gift that takes more than it gives.
Ultimately all our devices pull us quite literally out of the present moment and can thus insidiously
undermine the quality of our lives.
We are runners in a frenetic race to nowhere, and we are spending so much of our vital energy to
do it. We are hurtling toward ever more energy-draining and attention-demanding multitasking that
makes our brains atrophy. Instead of being our greatest ally, our minds run away with us, syphoning
off precious energy in the process.
Many of the deleterious issues we’re currently experiencing in the areas of health and psychology
have evolved in reaction to our extreme energy exposure and output—a condition called “excess
heat” in Chinese medicine. Some of the ailments and illnesses that are becoming more prevalent, from
arthritis and osteoporosis to heart disease and cancer, are all terrible consequences of it. Like our
beautiful planet, we are suffering from a microcosmic version of global warming. We need to literally
“cool off.” To regain our health and energy, we need balance. We need to generate more yin—the
space that creates the energy for yang to refuel, to replenish what it needs to thrive.
The good news is that through the “energy cultivation” we perform in the Waking Energy practices
we can significantly impact the quality and length of our lives. We may have a fighting chance to ward
off the harmful effects of the extensive electromagnetic radiation from our modern inventions and
conveniences as well as of our energy expenditure in attempting to keep up with the life they have
created.
Waking Energy’s uniquely balanced yin-and-yang flow is designed to counteract this excess heat
and to balance yin and yang in our bodies, providing the soothing balm, the stillness, the cool and
calm—the space and time in which to be reminded of what really matters most, our most precious
asset: our mental and physical health. By moving stagnant energy out of the body and inviting new
energy to enter in and strengthen the body’s reserves and central nervous system, you will
supercharge your immune system, improve your mood, enhance self-confidence, and increase your
ability to greet life’s challenges with equanimity as well as sculpt and shape a beautiful body.
