1. Sitting tall, rub your hands together vigorously to charge them with heaven and earth energy.
Bring your hands in front of your chest at the level of your lungs with your palms open and facing
you—with the fingertips pointing toward one another. Smile at your lungs, as if you were smiling
at a long-lost friend, and allow the positive energy of your smile to fill and surround your lungs.
2. Close your eyes. Use your powers of creative visualization to transport yourself to a scene of
snowcapped mountains surrounded by fresh green meadows and flowing springs far below.
Picture the pure white color of the snow and see the sun shining on the mountaintop, activating
the powerful life-force chi of white light. Feel the energy of the mountain. Hear the sound of a
metal bell ringing inside your mind. Inhale the pure, fresh, white light, inviting the energy to
expand into your lungs and heal them, and allow the vibration of the bell to sound in your ears,
soothing your spirit.
3. Inhale and direct your inner vision down to your lungs. Send the energy of your smile to your
lungs. First, look down at your left lung and smile. Actually let your eyes move as if you were
looking at your chest, but with eyes closed. Then look down at your right lung and smile.
Alternate between left and right. As you do so, gently sway your body in tandem with your inner
vision, rocking your body from left to right.
4. As you sway from left to right, allow your inner vision to probe the lungs more deeply, going into
their lower lobes and exploring what’s inside them. As you do, continue to breathe deeply and
smoothly, sending healing air into your lungs.
5. Now seek out any sadness or depression that resides in the lungs. Seek out any thoughts that arise
about who or what has contributed to the sadness or grief you feel. As you do this inner
exploration and excavation, sway from left to right (one set) for a total of twenty-one sets. I like
to think of this process as treasure hunting, because when you uncover sadness and can identify
its source, you are essentially harvesting a gift that you can use for energy transformation—you
can replace the emotion with courage and lightness—which translates as more energy.
6. After completing all the repetitions, raise your hands above your head, slightly in front of your
forehead, and turn your palms face up toward the sky to connect with heaven energy.
7. Inhale deeply and as you exhale, turn the corners of your mouth up, forming your mouth into a
smile. Place your tongue behind your front two top teeth and use the force of your exhalation to
make the cosmic healing sound “Sssssss,” like a snake hissing. As you make the snake sound,
visualize any sadness, depression, grief, and upset leaving your body like a cloudy, gray mist.
Direct the energy down into the earth where it will be recycled by plants, flowers, and trees, the
gifts from Mother Earth that provide us with our sustenance, precious oxygen.
Make the Ssssss sound three times. As you do, feel the sound begin clearing inside your
lungs, mobilizing stagnant chi and any excess heat that was trapped inside the pleural sacs
surrounding the lungs. Visualize your exhalations compressing the lungs and gently forcing the
heat up and out of your body. See the room being made for new chi to flow in along with the
fresh, cooling air that will circulate and nourish the lungs. Allow the first sound to be vocal and
strong, and then the second and third times you repeat it make it subtle, and then subvocal.
Internally heard, it becomes a deep inner vibration. Feel the quietude emerging from the
vibration, the energy surrounding the act of breathing, rather than from using force to back up the
sound. Think of why you are making the sound, and focus on integrating the qualities of the
mountain scene and the sound of the bell from step 1 into your sound.
