INTRODUCTION
The present memory report describes the practice experience lived by the studentteacher
Amelia de la Paz Sorto Martinez attending the subject Teaching Practice I
during the term 01-2017 at UNIVO. The teaching practice took place at Centro
Escolar Dolores C. Retes from March 7 th to May 23 rd , 2017. The teaching practice
consisted on completing 50 hours’ worked distributed as follows 10 hours of
classroom observation and 40 hours of teaching practice assisting the teacher in
charge of the English subject. Through the teaching practice student-teachers can
get an idea about what being a teacher implies and gives them the opportunity to
put into practice what they have learned in the course of their career so far. The
student-teacher has to play the role of an actual teacher and do all the task that
teachers do. One objective was to implement theories and develop skills in the use
of fundamental procedures, techniques and methods of teaching. The skills that a
future teacher should develop are establish personal relationships with others, learn
how to overcome problems of discipline and develop methods of control, create
effective lesson plans, etc. At the end of a teaching practice, the student-teacher has
to have self-evaluation and discover their own strengths and weaknesses with the
supervisor’s help. The result should be a good personal and practical experience on
schools for the students who will be future teachers in order to make them excellent
professionals. In this report is detailed the experience of one future English teacher.
DESCRIPTION OF THE TEACHING PRACTICE
Before Starting:
Before starting this new phase in my life as a future English teacher, I was expecting
many things. First of all, I felt anxious to know how the students were going to be
and how I was going to be as a teacher. I wondered if I was ready to interact with
children of those ages and if I had the correct skills to deal with them. In addition,
planning a class is more difficult than I thought, it requires a lot of creativity and I did
not know if I could be able to do it. Despite all the insecurities I had, I was also willing
to work and improve myself.
Preparatory to go to the school the teacher in charge of Teaching Practice I subject
asked us to prepare two classes so that we could become familiar with the teachinglearning
environment. It was hard to plan the classes especially formulate the
objectives. We were going to give the classes to our same university classmates and
I thought that working with them would be a bit easy and a good way to warm up my
teaching practice but it actually was difficult starting with the classroom management
because some of them did not want to participate. I got scared because I said in my
mind that if my classmates that were adults did not want to pay attention to me I
could not even imagine how the kids were going to be at the school.
Then the teacher gave me a feedback that undoubtedly helped me a lot because
she told me the parts in which I was failing and she showed me examples about how
to formulate objectives. That was helpful because I could felt more confident about
what I was going to do at the school.
During it
The first day at the school was weird and funny because I was terribly nervous. I was
new in all that teaching stuff. I automatically knew that it was the time to put all my
knowledge into practice. At the beginning, I was supposed to observe but the teacher
asked me to help him to give the class and I said why not. I helped the students to
complete some exercise from the workbooks. The students seemed friendly but the
teacher told me that some of them were difficult to work with. I was like what am I
going to do to involve all these kids in my classes. I put all my effort into looking for
activities that were creative and innovative so that the students liked them and thus
catch their attention. Every week I made three lesson plans because I was working
with three grades and four different sections. On every Tuesday, I interacted with
116 students from 11 to 17 years old. It was not easy but I tried to do my best. I
asked the teacher about what was the plans, programs and materials that he worked
4

with and he told me that he only worked with the workbooks and give students some
vocabulary and that is it.
I had to use those books to guide my lesson plans because Don Saul (the teacher
in charge) told me that the workbooks followed the MINED program contents. It was
like mandatory to use the books all the classes. The books had pictures and
vocabulary but I always used some additional vocabulary and materials like
flashcards, worksheets, etc. To make the lessons more interesting and captivating
to students.
There were days in which the students misbehaved and were rude to Don Saul and
disrespectful with me because they were talking and playing during the classes.
Sometimes I got stressed and frustrated that I thought it was my fault but Don Saul
told me that they were always like that and that even with me they were behaving
better than with him. At the end, I won their affection and although they did not always
behaved well they did what they could. I appreciated their effort and I just advised
them not to be disrespectful to others, especially to elders.
The last day, the ninth grade students gave me ice cream as a farewell present, the
seventh grade students gave me a group hug and the eighth grade students told me
that they would miss me.
It was a nice experience.
Final reflection (what did I learn?)
I cannot explain how many things I have learned during these three last months
doing my teaching practice. Words cannot express what I feel about the moments I
lived as a person or as a teacher in training trough this stage in my way to get my
Bachelor’s Degree in English. The first thing that I can say is that I had the
opportunity to practice and share all my knowledge with others. I learned how to
identify my strengths and weaknesses but most important how to embrace my
strengths and how to improve my weaknesses. I made all the tasks that an actual
teacher does. I evaluated my potential to be a teacher. I put into practice the theories,
procedures, techniques and methods that I had learned in class. I was able to learn
how to interact with other people, how to overcome problems of discipline and
misbehavior in students, how to give instructions/use commands, how to design
lesson plans, etc. In order to develop my teaching proficiency and educational skill.
Certainly, I am not a perfect teacher yet but I consider that I improved many aspects.
It also made me realize the reality in which we live and the manner how children act
these days in the schools.
I will always remember this part in my life. I am pretty sure that this experience will
help me to become a good teacher. I just need to say that it was difficult but nice.
5

CONCLUSION
To conclude, thanks to this experience every student of the Bachelor’s Degree in
English at UNIVO had the opportunity to grow as a person and as a future
professional. It will help them to become efficient teachers with human quality. In
addition, this will serve to them as a base for knowing how to work in schools and
how to interact with students in order to make a correct teaching-leaning process.
To Amelia de la Paz Sorto Martinez, it was a nice experience, which taught her many
things. It can be said that the objectives were reached almost in its 100%. This could
not be possible without the help of the teacher in charge of the Teaching Practice I
subject Jacqueline Teresa Serrano, the teacher in charge of the English subject at
the school C. E. Dolores C. Retes Don Saul Dinarte Aguirre, the principal of the
school and all the students.
