FATHER’S
DAY!!!
JUNE 18TH
Father’s Day 2017 is not a federal holiday and falls on the
third Sunday of June. The date of the Holiday changes each
year but always remains on a Sunday.
Significance of Father’s Day 2017
It is a day that commemorates fatherhood and appreciates
all fathers and father-figures (including grandfathers,
great-grandfathers, stepfathers and foster fathers), as well
as their contribution to society.
History of Father’s Day
The History of Father’s Day 2017 dates back to 1910 in Spokane,
Washington, where 27-year-old Sonora Dodd proposed it as
a way to honor the man (a civil war veteran William Jackson
Smart) who raised her and her five siblings alone after her
mom died in childbirth. Dodd was at a church thinking about
how grateful she was for her father when she had the idea for
Father’s Day, which would mirror Mother’s Day but be celebrated
in June, her dad’s birthday month.
It is said that she was inspired after hearing a sermon about
Jarvis’ Mother’s Day in 1909 at Central Methodist Episcopal
Church and she therefore told her pastor that fathers should
have a similar holiday honoring them. A bill to nationally
recognize the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak
in a Father’s Day celebration and wanted to make it official,
but Congress resisted, with the fear that it was just another
commercialized holiday. The movement grew for years but
only became popular nationally in 1924 under former
President Calvin Coolidge.
The holiday gained popularity during World War II, with
most men leaving their families to fight in the war. In 1966,
President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday
of June to be Father’s Day. US President Calvin Coolidge
recommended in 1924 that the day be celebrated by the nation,
but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation.
Two attempts to formally recognize the holiday had earlier
been rejected by Congress. In 1966, President Lyndon B.
Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring
fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as
Father’s Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent
national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it
into law in 1972.
Traditions of Father’s Day 2017
Traditionally, families gather to celebrate the father figures
in their lives. Father’s Day is a relatively modern holiday so
different families have a range of traditions. Many people
send or give cards or traditionally masculine gifts such
as sports items or clothing, electronic gadgets, outdoor
cooking supplies and tools for household maintenance. In
the days and weeks leading to Father’s Day, many schools
help their pupils to prepare a handmade card or small gift
for their fathers. Additionally, the US Open golf tournament
is scheduled to finish on Father’s Day.
LESSONS FROM DAD
Taken from a blog from Huffington Post:
Fatherly Wisdom:
• Your reputation is everything.
Don’t do or say anything that can tarnish that.
• Tip well. It could be you on the other end.
• Make someone smile. Be polite, friendly and treat people well,
regardless of who they are or their position in life.
This includes knowing when to say: Please, Thank you and I’m sorry.
• Beauty will fade, so develop your brain. Read. Get an education.
• There are three kinds of people in the world: those that watch things
happen, those that make things happen and those that say
“What happened?” Be a person that makes things happen.
• Humor is the ultimate icebreaker, way to connect and coping
mechanism.
• Believe in God.
• Be a gracious host and make people feel welcome in your home.
• Give back to your community and give often.
• Marry someone kind, smart and hardworking, who treats
their mother well.
• Watch what you say, as you can hurt and alienate people
with your words.
• Be a good friend. Always be generous. Be affectionate.
Take care of those around you.
• Money doesn’t grow on trees, so don’t be wasteful.
• Put yourself out there. You won’t meet anyone or make friends
as a shut-in.
• Don’t lie; it’s too stressful to have to remember what you said.
Don’t be a know-it-all. And don’t brag.
• Love and honor your parents and siblings and always
call your grandparents.
• Don’t be so quick to judge a person or situation - good or bad.
GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE
Lawns
• Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns.
• Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from
the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf.
• Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature
hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and
driest part of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or
dursban granules.
WHAT DAD REALLY WANTS FOR FATHER’S DAY!
What do dads really want for Father’ Day? While a majority of women
thought that tickets to a sporting event would put a smile on Dad’s
face, it turns out that what would really make pappy happy is a new
tablet or smartphone.
Completing the top five gifts American dads would like to receive are:
1. New tablet or smart phone
2. A home-cooked meal that they love
3. Tickets to a sporting event
4. Power tools
5. A guilt-free weekend with friends
June Flower: Rose
Astrological Signs: Gemini (till 20 th ) & Cancer (beginning 21 st )
Lakes of Eldridge | June 2017
Flowers
• Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom.
• Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage
more of the beautiful foliage.
• Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra,
Artemisia, Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus,
Croton, Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold,
Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia,
Verbena and Vinca.
Vegetables
• A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs
for the rest of the day.
• Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber,
Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and
Sweet Potato.
Shrubs
• Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now
for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water.
Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic.
Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer
of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches
conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and
protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the
force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil
compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will
almost eliminate weed problems.
SPLASH! PROGRAMS/EVENTS
The Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Splash! program offers swim
lessons periodically throughout the year. All lessons are
based on the American Red Cross Learn to Swim program
and the program is supervised by WSI Certified instructors.
Whether your child is brand new to the water or they are
swimming laps, our instructors have the unique ability to
build on the skills your child already possesses. We have
three options for group lessons: Level 1 (Introduction to
Water Skills), Level 2 (Fundamental Aquatic Skills) and Level
3 (Stroke Development).
We also offer private lessons for younger students (under 4
yrs), for students whose skills are greater than our Level 3
curriculum and for adults over 18 who would like to learn
the basics.
Open lanes are for participants to work on stroke, time and
conditioning individually. A great way to reinforce skills that
have been achieved! While an instructor and lifeguard are
present, this is not a lesson. (instructor approval required)
Children with special needs are also welcome! We will work
with both the parents and child to find the best fit where he
or she will be most successful in the program. For pricing,
schedule and registration form, visit www.cfisd.net.
had all the kids laughing with his hilarious farmer accent. Next, the
children heard from kindergarten teacher Mrs. Lacaze dressed as
a frog from the book “I Don’t Want to be a Frog” by Dev Petty. This
was followed by a lovely lion, Mrs. Hroch, reading “The Lion and
the Little Red Bird” by Elisa Kleven. The evening ended with Mrs.
Jansson’s entertaining rendition of the book “The Twelve Days of
Kindergarten: A Counting Book” by Deborah Lee Rose. The children
loved how Mrs. Jansson sang the story instead of reading it! It was
a fun night had by all.
LADIES BIBLE STUDY
The women’s group will begin a bible study, A Compassionate Call To
Counter Culture. We live in days marked by a rapidly changing moral
landscape. Debates rage. Emotions run high. But the stakes are even
higher than we might think. What if the real issue is the glory of God? How
are we to respond? In this small group Bible study, best selling author
David Platt calls the church to a contrite, compassionate and courageous
response to the most controversial issues in our culture.
This is a 6-week study and will cover the subjects of: Culture; Wealth;
Human Life; Sexuality; Race and Faith. Please join us on Tuesday
PET INFORMATION
SCOOPAGE PET POOPAGE
It may not be a fabulous way to walk, but
please have courtesy to please scoop when
your pet poops during your walks. Throughout
the community trails, you will find areas to toss
your pet’s poopage and in some areas, there
are also bags. Carry your own grocery bags -
you’ll be recycling at the same time! Many of
your neighbors work hard with their lawncare
and landscaping. Come with a scooper and a
recycled grocery bag or anything else. Picking
up after your pets shows your respect for every
homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet
feces damages lawns and many residents are
working hard to maintaining their grass!
HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose
a threat to all our residents. While you may
know your pet is friendly, an animal running
at someone who is walking by is very scary
for that person. Many children are afraid of
animals and become frightened, which could
result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid
the animal.
Harris County Animal Control advises, “All
dogs and cats must be kept under restraint
while in the unincorporated areas of Harris
County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat
is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any
unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog
or cat to become a stray.”
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog
or cat under the following circumstances:
1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not
more than six (6) feet in length, if the line
or leash is held by a human being, who is
capable of controlling or governing the dog
or cat in question
2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle
3. When it is on the premise of the custodian
and the animal does not have access to sidewalk
or street.”
While it may be nice to have your animal
out in the yard while you work or play, it is
against the law, unless the animal is properly
restrained.
Let’s all help keep our community a safe and
comfortable place for all our residents by
being responsible pet owners. This will not
only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling
in the area, but also the pet owner who
could be held legally responsible or possibly
sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.
To make a complaint or report an animal that
is not properly restrained please contact:
5 STEPS TO A
HAPPIER HEALTHIER PET
1. Protect your pet from extreme weather
(heat, cold, rain, etc.).
2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on
a leash when walked.
3. Make sure they’re up to date with
vaccinations.
4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification,
so they can be returned to you if lost.
5. Spay or neuter your pet.
Texas Lab Rescue has labs available that are
waiting to go to their forever home. Please
check out their website at txlabrescue.org.
PREVENT EXCESSIVE BARKING!
Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and
restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond
noisily to any and all activity. Nothing
is as annoying as incessant barking-even for
dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler,
please consider some of these bark-abatement
ideas to keep the noise down in your
area. Your neighbors will thank you!
• Training. Training not only helps your dog,
you’ll be surprised how much it helps you,
too. You may get some insight into why your
dog barks so much, or what it is trying to
communicate.
• Citronella collars.
• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing
an outspoken dog indoors or confining it
to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to
neighbors.
• For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close
drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave
a radio on to mask it.
• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals;
they need companionship-a cat, bird or
another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from
a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off
at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once
or twice a week.
SCHOOL’S OUT - CAN WE HAVE A PET?
Summer is here, children are out of school
and may need a project. What better time to
get involved with a rescue group and help a
dog or cat in need? That’s what fostering an
animal is all about. Fostering is an important
step in the transition from shelter/street to
“happy ever after.” Loving Arms Pet Placement
is a foster-based rescue for dogs and cats and
is always in need of foster families.
There is a lot more to fostering than providing
food, water and a safe place to sleep. To
attract potential adopters, the animal must
be people friendly. Include the animal in
your daily home life inside your home. Get to
know them as individuals so you can share
personality traits, likes/dislikes, anecdotes.
Treat the animal like your own and train him/
her, if possible.
Tell Loving Arms Pet Placement rescue in
what capacity you can help. Can your home
only accommodate small animals or can you
foster big dogs? Can you handle puppies and
kittens or only mature animals? Can you take
more than one animal at once?
Visit Loving Arms Pet Placement website at
www.lovingarmspetplacement.com or visit
us at Petsmart on Highway 6 and FM 529
each Saturday from 11 AM until 5 PM.•
My name is Benedicte Guillaume and I am French. I arrived with my
family last summer and live in LOE. I would like to share with you one
of my favorite summer recipes of taboulleh. It’s a tasty Moroccan
taboulleh, different from the Lebanese taboulleh (with a lot of herbs
and bulgur). It’s perfect for dinner with a slice of meat and a cup of
fresh gazpacho.
MON TABOULE GOURMAND
Ingredients:
1 1/4 cup of golden Couscous - no need to pre-cook it.
4 Roma Tomatoes
1/2 cucumber
1 red bell pepper
1 green bell pepper
1 small red onion
1 soup ladle of olive oil
2 lemon juice
1 tablespoon parsley
Salt/pepper to taste
Directions:
Peel the peppers and the cucumber. Finely dice all the vegetables.
Mix all the ingredients in a large salad bowl. Put in the fridge for 2
hours. Before serving, you may add some mint leaves. And then, bon
appetite!
CLASSIC TEXAS CAVIAR
“Don’t bother with soaking and cooking beans for Classic Texas
Caviar - the canned variety works well. But skip the bottled dressing
and take a little extra time to measure your own vinegar, oil and
spices.”
Ingredients:
2 (15.8 ounce) cans black-eyed peas, drained
1 (14.5 ounce) can petite diced tomatoes, drained
2 fresh medium jalapenos, stemmed, seeded and minced
1 small onion, cut into small dice
1/2 yellow bell pepper, stemmed, seeded and diced small
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
6 tablespoons red wine vinegar
6 tablespoons olive oil (not extra virgin)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
Directions:
Mix all ingredients in a medium bowl, cover and refrigerate 2 hours
or up to 2 days. Before serving, adjust seasonings to taste, adding
extra vinegar, salt and pepper. Transfer to a serving bowl.
