Side Trips
Don’t miss out on the Parade of Homes
this weekend. I had the privilege of
reading about and seeing the photos
of one of the featured homes in our sister
publication, OKO-
BOJI Magazine, when
we were working on
that edition a few
weeks ago.
This Spirit Lake
home was designed
for three generations
of one family and is
a really sweet story
about honoring one’s
parents. The family also
has a spacious yard
and some wide open
spaces, which is always
nice when you’re living within city limits.
It’s amazing to me, in retrospect, how
quickly a family grows up and how their
needs change. I used to think it was just a
realtor ploy when they said a family should
change homes every seven years. While I
haven’t followed that principle myself, I can
see now how it makes sense.
Moving more often would have forced
me and my family to do a better job of
editing and archiving. Right now, it is a
challenge to find photos and memorabilia.
There are certain periods of our lives that
are nicely recorded and others that are completely
missing.
Some winter day a few years from now I’ll
start the dreaded process of editing, organizing
and adding notes while my memory
still allows me to do so. But, that’s a job for
a winter day, not one of these precious few
warm sunny days of summer. The days may
be long, yet never long enough.
You can find a map about the Parade of
Homes on page 4 of this issue, or check out
our website at okobojimag.com for more
information.
Heritage Days
Former resident-turnedcelebrity
to attend celebration
Beaver Cleaver is making his way
to Rock Rapids.
The “Leave it to Beaver”
character, portrayed by Jerry Mathers,
will make a special appearance at the
Lyon County community’s annual
Heritage Days celebration Friday-Sunday,
June 15-18.
“If you are in the vicinity, please
come by and join us,” said Mathers
via a Facebook post on May 17. “I
look forward to meeting you!”
Mathers, 69, was born in Sioux City
and lived in Rock Rapids at 408 S. Carroll
St. for about two years in the late
1940s when his father, Norm, was a
teacher and assistant football coach.
“We’re really excited about having
him,” said Angie Jager, executive director
of the Rock Rapids Chamber of
Commerce.
Mathers is slated to make his first
appearance at Heritage Days at 8 p.m.
Friday at the River Valley Players Revue
at Forster Auditorium.
He then will be the grand marshal
in the parade at 11 a.m. Saturday. He’ll
spend Saturday afternoon at Island
Park playing Bingo, having a meet and
greet and being available for photos.
He’ll attend the all-school reunion at
5 p.m. Saturday at the Forster Community
Center, as well.
Sunday, Mathers plans on visiting
Rock Rapids Health Centre to meet
with the nursing home residents.
While the former Rock Rapids
resident-turned-celebrity is sure to be
the spotlight during Heritage Days,
the celebration, which began in 1981,
is jam-packed with activities for the
whole family.
Saturday, visitors are invited to tour
a tiny house built by students at Central
Lyon High School. The house will
be auctioned off at 10 a.m. Saturday,
June 24, at the school, located at 1010
S. Greene St.
“Tiny houses are kind of a new craze
for people,” Jager said.
Rock Rapids’ Mural Society also will
auction off a painted plaster lion on
Saturday as a fundraiser for the group.
Another new event is the Lyon
County Relay for Life Survivor Celebration,
which will be held at 9 a.m.
Saturday in the basement at Frontier
Bank.
Some events that are returning
include an All American Lumberjack
Show 1-3 p.m. Saturday at Island
Park and the Rock Rapids Fire Department’s
Water Wars at 2 p.m. Saturday
on South Story Street.
Jager cites Heritage Days’ most
popular event as the parade.
Following the event, numerous
activities, including food vendors, a
balloon man, face painting, vendor
fair, car show, inflatables, train rides
and more are hosted at Island Park.
“There’s something for everyone of
all ages,” Jager said.
She said it’s nothing to have more
than 1,000 people show up at the
park, and she expects 300-500 people,
depending on the weather, to attend
the street dance, which will feature
the Rude Band of Sioux Falls, SD, at 9
p.m. Saturday.
All in all, Jager encourages people to
attend Heritage Days.
“It’s just a fun weekend in town,
and there’s a lot of things going on for
people of all ages,” she said. “Come
check out Jerry Mathers, take in all the
fun events and support Rock Rapids.”
FEATURED BUSINESS
Avera Medical Group
Lakes Family Practice
and Avera Medical Group
Spirit Lake Medical Center
have been providing
healthcare for residents
in the Iowa Great Lakes
for generations, and are
dedicated to continuing that tradition, even as health
reform demands a different way of providing that care.
One demonstration of that commitment is by their
transition to becoming Provider-Based Clinics last
fall, after officially forming a partnership with Lakes
Regional Healthcare. By working together, the clinics
and hospital will integrate services, resulting in less
duplication of services, and provide more streamlined,
and ultimately less costly, care for patients.
Spirit Lake
Medical Center
Healthcare begins with the selection of a family practice
physician and both clinics have many physicians from
which to choose. Avera Medical Group Lakes Family
Practice has four family physicians: Dr. Steve Carlson,
Dr. Tom Kalkhoff, and the more recent additions of
Dr. Kelli Roenfanz and Dr. Steve VanderLeest. Avera
Medical Group Spirit Lake Medical Center has four
family physicians: Dr. Brian Ford, Dr. Jeff Goerss, Dr.
Brett Olson, and Dr. James Webb, as well as internal
medicine physician Dr. Andrew Brevik. For more
FAMILY NATURE NIGHT
All ages invited to first free program at fish hatchery
The Dickinson County Conservation
Board aims to get kids outdoors
all summer long.
“We believe it is also important to
give families affordable and fun opportunities
to enjoy the outdoors,”
said Bryanna Kuhlman, environmental
education coordinator for the conservation
board.
As a result, the board, which runs
the Dickinson County Nature Center,
located at 2279 170th St. near Okoboji,
will host Family Nature Night,
the first of which will be held at 6
p.m. Monday, June 12.
The event will be held at the Spirit
Lake Fish Hatchery at 122 252nd Ave.
in Orleans.
Families of all ages will have the
chance to fish in the outdoor ponds,
while learning how to bait a hook
and tie a lure. In between casts, family
members will have the opportunity to
challenge each other to a competition
to see who can secure his or her life
jacket fastest or make a handprint fish
craft to take home.
“The free program lasts about an
hour,” said Kiley Roth, community relations
coordinator for the Dickinson
County Conservation Board. “From
baiting hooks to catching fish to crafts
and friendly competition, the event
will be packed with family activities.”
The conservation board began offering
the Family Nature Night series
last year.
“The first year went well,” Kuhlman
said. “At the two we were able to host,
we had 25-30 people attend, and one
was cancelled due to severe weather.”
Following the fishing night, the
conservation board also will host
a Family Nature Night focusing on
camping on Monday, July 10, and disc
golf on Monday, Aug. 14.
The second installment will be held
at the Dickinson County Nature Center.
Learn how to put up a tent and then
compete against other families to see
who can accomplish the task in the
shortest amount of time. Participants
also will have the opportunity to roast
marshmallows and make s’mores and
then gather with the entire group for a
sing-along and campfire stories.
The Family Nature Night series will
culminate with a Disc Golf Challenge
at the Okoboji Gold Disc Golf Course
in Kenue Park, which is also home to
the Dickinson County Nature Center.
Learn basic disc golf throws and
rules of the game, then try your
hand at the fast-growing sport on the
18-hole professional level disc golf
course.
“We just want families to see how
much fun they can have together
outside,” Roth said. “We are always
striving to foster an appreciation of
the natural world in our program
participants and visitors, and we think
Family Nature Night is a great way to
get people outside, learning and making
lasting memories.” F
Spirit Lake | Iowa
Fish Hatchery
The Spirit Lake Fish Hatchery
is a walleye, northern pike and
muskellunge hatching and rearing
station. Production facilities
include seven egg incubators
with a total capacity of 1,100
quarts, 20 indoor raceways, six
nondrainable ponds and two
natural lakes. Water is obtained
from Spirit Lake and is discharged
into East Okoboji Lake.
The annual hatching period begins
in late March, when ice cover
leaves area lakes. Adult fish are collected
when they travel the shoreline
to spawn and are captured using
gillnets. Fish are transported to the
hatchery, where eggs are removed
and fertilized. All adult fish are returned
to the lake in which they were
captured.
Incubation takes place in special
jars that allow fresh water to flow
over the eggs, supplying oxygen.
Walleye eggs are also collected from
Storm Lake and Clear Lake and
transported to the Spirit Lake hatchery
for incubation. After hatching,
fish may be stocked as fry or reared
to advance fingerling stages. Fry are
fed either a commercial diet in the
hatchery or stocked into a nursery
lake where they consume natural
foods.

An Enduring Gem
Okoboji Summer Theatre presents its 60th season
Over 59 seasons with more than
1.5 million attendees at more
than 550 productions resulting
from 40,000 hours of rehearsal, Okoboji
Summer Theatre has entertained
generations of visitors and residents
of the Iowa Great Lakes.
They plan to add to those totals
with another season of summer theatre.
“To think of all that is pretty remarkable,”
said Gail Humphries, in
her third season as creative director
for Okoboji Summer Theatre.
The 60th anniversary season begins
with “The World Goes ‘Round,”
which will run June 13-18. The musical
revue from the Tony-award winning
duo Kander and Ebb features a
collection of memorable songs from
“Chicago,” “Cabaret,” “Funny Lady”
and “New York, New York.”
And that is just to get things started.
Over the course of the summer, the
productions include musicals, comedies
and farces.
“It is truly art at its best,” Humphries
said. “And we have a perfect blend of
professionals and students from Stephens
College, along with great directors
and guest artists coming from all
over the country.”
They will combine their efforts and
hours upon hours of rehearsal time
to bring to the stage “South Pacific,”
“Footloose,” “Plaza Suite,” “Sylvia,”
“The Nerd” and more.
“We have a really nice mix of solid
classics and new, different work that
we’ve never had on stage here before,”
said Ruth Ann Burke, OST executive
director. “It’s important to offer that
range as we truly have an audience
of all ages, including some that have
been buying season tickets with us for
50-plus years.”
Humphries added that the vibrancy
of the shows selected this year will
help launch the theatre forward as
well as allow those to reflect on 60
years of performances.
Long-time theatre-goers and newbies
alike will get a chance to meet an
Oscar-winner during the production
of “On Golden Pond,” which runs
July 18-23.
Playwright Ernest Thompson won
the Academy Award for Best Adapted
Screenplay in 1981 when he adapted
his own script for “On Golden Pond”
for a movie starring Henry Fonda and
Katharine Hepburn.
Off the main stage, Boji Bantam
Children’s Theatre will get its start
June 21 with “Pinkalicious The Musical.”
All of the Boji Bantam productions
this year are adapted from books to
help advance literacy through the arts
and help build the next generation of
theatre lovers.
In a different attempt to cultivate
a new theatre audience, OST is also
promoting Friday as “Date Night” at
the theatre. They will offer free babysitting
services by the theatre students
as well as pre-show entertainment for
couples looking to enjoy a night out.
“We’re a theatre for all ages and
all stages of life, from preschool to
seniors, there’s something for everyone,”
Humphries said. “There is a
remarkably supportive community
and audience here that we are grateful
for and want to see grow.”
Helping get every season going is a
veritable army of volunteers, a group
that has been gathering for 65 years,
before the theatre even started, according
to Burke.
The group helps with several items,
ranging from the flower arrangements
at the entrance to large infrastructure
Creative director Gail Humphries
and executive director Ruth Ann
Burke are ready to welcome everyone
back for the 60th anniversary
season of Okoboji Summer
Theatre. PHOTO BY RYLAN HOWE
projects.
It all comes together for a special
60th season at Okoboji Summer Theatre
— one that Burke says has some
serious tones in a couple productions
but an overall light and fun feel that
everyone can enjoy.
So theatre buffs and those visiting
for the first time, prepare for another
fantastic summer of top-notch entertainment
at OST. F
The free show is set for Friday, June
16 with doors opening at 6 p.m.
Wakefield may have officially, in the
eyes of the American television viewer,
began his rise to stardom with his
runner-up finish on “The Voice” in the
spring of 2016, but his path toward a
career as a musical artist began much
earlier.
According to his website, www.
adamwakefieldmusic.com, Wakefield
started out with the piano, specifically
delving into jazz piano, which lasted
into his college days, before shelving
that path and starting a band with his
brother.
Along the way, he began to develop
and mine a talent for songwriting.
The next stop on his musical path
was coming to the Country Music
Capital of the World – Nashville.
The band with his brother gave
way to a bluegrass band called The
Copperheads and after a downtown
Nashville performance, he was asked
to audition by a scout for “The Voice,”
where he was mentored by Blake Shelton,
who continues to remain actively
involved in his career.
It’s a career that is continuing to
rise, and those in the Iowa Great Lakes
next Friday won’t want to miss out on
a free chance to see the next young
country music star in the making. F
RiseFest
Twelve years ago, Rob Roozeboom
had high hopes for the future of
RiseFest.
He’s met most of his goals, but he
still has higher aspirations.
“I’m still hoping it goes beyond
this. We’re finally where we hoped
we would be, but we still have room
to grow,” said Roozeboom, president
and founder of Rise Ministries in Sheldon.
No matter, the two-day festival,
which will be held Friday-Saturday,
June 16-17, this year on an alfalfa
field along Country Club Road north
of Sheldon, has grown exponentially
since its inception.
“Twelve years ago, it wasn’t even
my baby or my idea, it’s just something
we started, and it’s continued to
grow,” Roozeboom said.
The festival has grown to include
camping sites, and this year about 40
additional spots are being added. A
roof has also been added over the accessible
seating area.
New musical acts include Danny
Gokey, Set for the Fall, For All Seasons
and Love and the Outcome. Others,
such as Kelly Lantz, KJ-52, Josh
Brewer, MercyMe, Maddie Rey, Building
429, Pedro LeTorre, Tenth Avenue
North, Adam Weber, Joshua Jordan,
Crowder and TobyMac all have appeared
at RiseFest at some point during
its 12-year run.
All in all, in addition to the musical
acts, Roozeboom is excited for each
and every aspect of the festival.
He said in the past 11,000-12,000
people have come out for the festival,
but he’s hoping for 13,000-14,000
people this year.
“We’re hoping this will be one of
the largest crowds ever,” Roozeboom
said.
In addition to the musical acts and
speakers, there also will be events for
children, including a youth area, kids
zone and tween area.
“It’s a fantastic family event, so if
you’re looking for a Christian-type
of event in the area, this is one of the
best lineups we’ve ever been given,
and we want people to spend the
weekend making memories with their
kids and not go away anytime soon,
but be a part of something bigger than
ourselves — to get involved and do
something,” Roozeboom said.
RiseFest partners with Soles4Souls
and Village Northwest Unlimited in
Sheldon and encourages festival-goers
to bring their old footwear to donate
in the Demco wagon on the festival
grounds.
Still, Roozeboom said there’s a
greater purpose for the festival.
“You come to RiseFest to let kids
Chris Tomlin addresses the crowd during an
encore performance at RiseFest last year in
Sheldon. He headlined the Saturday events for
the two-day Christian music festival. PHOTO BY
JOSH HARRELL
Christian music festival is more than music, it’s a mission
run, let teenagers hang out with other
teenagers, and it’s Sheldon, Iowa;
you don’t have to drive far,” he said.
“We’re talking about multiple bands
gracing the stage, and what a fantastic
weekend for families, friends, youth
groups and co-workers. Why not go to
RiseFest this year? It’s pretty minimal
in the cost for what you get.”
As for the future, Roozeboom hopes
that RiseFest continues to grow.
“I dream, honestly, in the future to
see more kids become more involved
in it, and my kids are finally at an
age now that they can serve and get
involved. Their youth group came out
the other night and helped us out,”
he said. “I hope it becomes not just
a blessing the weekend of, but all
year round, and if that means helping
other organizations or partnering
with others to get the word out, that’s
what we’re looking at.” F
The
ARTof
MUSIC
Music is an art form, so it stands
to reason that an art gallery
would be a perfect place to
stage a concert.
Arts on Grand in Spencer has been
doing just that, off and on, since the
1990s, and the next installment of
Music in the Gallery is set for 7 p.m.
Saturday, June 17, with Des Moinesbased
Patresa Hartman.
“I think it’s important for people
to realize art is not just a painting on
a wall,” said Joanne Schar, curator of
Arts on Grand. “Writing, music, clay,
jewelry making — these are all expressions
of artistic creativity.”
Schar said the gallery generally gets
about 40 guests during Music in the
Gallery and has brought in ukulele
and flute musicians so far this summer
as well as various musicians over
the years.
Patresa Hartman is a guitarist, pianist
and songwriter that describes her
music as “soul-folk.”
“I call it “soul-folk,” because I have
a soul/blues voice, but I probably
write more like a folk singer. I go back
and forth between an acoustic guitar
and the piano. I write very biographically,
I guess. I don’t know how to
write songs that don’t come from my
own experiences and squishy feelings,”
Hartman said.
Hartman was a writer first and was
involved in music growing up in both
school and church. A fear of performing
caused her to hang it up at the age
of 20 before dipping a toe back into
music 10 years later.
“I wrote songs, started learning the
guitar, bought a piano from a thrift
store, but still wouldn’t play in front
of people,” Hartman said. “Then, a
friend and I launched a little personal
project when I was 35 or 36 to tackle
some kind of big fear. My big fear
had been playing music in front of
others for the last 15 years. So, long
story short, I finally went to an open
mic and played in front of strangers.
It wasn’t great, but I didn’t die, and so
I kept doing it. And now I’m 43, and
I’m not afraid of it anymore.”
Patresa Hartman
performs at Arts on Grand
Hartman should find a fun and
friendly audience at Arts on Grand,
according to Schar.
“When singer-songwriters put
themselves out there it’s good to have
a friendly audience, and the people
who come are always open to new
musical experiences. I think the artists
who perform here appreciate that,”
Schar said.
The interaction and connection between
artist and audience is key to any
concert. It’s an element of performing
that Hartman has come to enjoy the
most.
“I hope people connect with the
songs personally, whether it’s a lyric,
the general vibe or the story I tell to
go with it. I like it when people tell
me they had some kind of reaction to
a particular song, even if it isn’t what I
consciously intended or exactly what I
felt when I wrote it,” Hartman said. “I
think art is pretty cool that way — that
it can mean different things to different
people.”
Music lovers, art lovers, everyone in
between. All are welcome to come enjoy
an evening of Music in the Gallery
with Patresa Hartman. F
The next two musicians slated
to perform in the gallery are
Chad Elliott on July 29 and Rick
Brosseau in August.
Anne Bishop McGregor is a native
of Bondurant. The pastel artist
will have a show of landscapes and
still lifes, called “Beauty in the Ordinary,”
up June 20-July 31.
Terry Firkens, an alum of Spencer
High School, will present his plein
air work in a show Aug. 1-Sept. 5.
Firkens painted pieces during harvest
season in northwest Iowa.
“I hope people
connect with the
songs personally,
whether it’s a lyric,
the general vibe or
the story I tell to go
with it.”
Nature | 19
Lakeside
Learning
Summer programs have plenty to offer for all ages
Nature can teach us many things.
In turn, the folks at the Iowa
Lakeside Laboratory Regents
Resource Center would like people to
visit this summer to learn both from
nature and about nature as well as
about science and the practice of science.
Wild Wednesdays begin at 7 p.m.
June 14 with “Mud, Silk, Sticks and
More: Animal Architecture.”
Classes will continue each Wednesday
through Aug. 2 with a different
topic each week.
“Wild Wednesdays are a great way
for people to come see what goes
on out here at Lakeside,” said Jane
Shuttleworth, education coordinator
at the laboratory. “They’re intentionally
designed for the public to come
learn about science and the practice of
science, and it’s great for kids and the
whole family. All children are young
scientists full of questions and curiosity.”
The overall theme for the program
this summer is “Build a Better World.”
RYLAN HOWE | STAFF WRITER
Visitors will learn how the wetlands
filter water and how to help protect
water quality themselves. The first
Wild Wednesday will demonstrate
the unique architecture of the animal
world.
“Beavers build dams and are really
engineers of water flow. A variety of
birds are just amazing with how they
use just their beaks to build amazing
nests. We have a bald eagle family on
the campus here that builds a nest
that weighs a ton,” Shuttleworth said.
“We hope people will learn from
these animals, and it inspires them
to build for a better, more sustainable
future.”
Those who attend this particular
Wild Wednesday will get the chance
to design their own animal shelter
with found materials.
Tuesday Science Seminars continue
throughout the summer as well, although
due to a scheduling issue, the
next one, “White Tail Deer: Trophy,
Treasure or Trouble?” will be presented
at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June,
in Mahan Hall.
During this seminar, Larry Stone
will talk about the population of
whitetail deer in Iowa. They nearly
vanished in the 1800s, but are so
ubiquitous today that many Iowans
take their presence for granted.
“The Science Seminars are also open
to the public, but geared more toward
adults with a formal lecture setting,”
Shuttleworth said. “They’re very fascinating
research topics that people are
doing right here in Iowa. With all the
programming here, we hope people
leave with a richer understanding of
the world we’re a part of and inspire
both curiosity and stewardship.” F
There are also several continuous
activities people can
enjoy at Lakeside Lab throughout
the summer.
The Lakeside Treasure Hike runs
June 1-Oct. 1 and is a self-guided
nature hike that tours the grounds
and is ideal for children, families
and people of all ages who enjoy
exploring. Treasure maps are available
near the main entrance, and
hikers can look for hidden clues
and secret messages throughout
the hike.
There are also volunteer opportunities
in Coffee and Grounds,
which meets at 8:30 a.m. every
Tuesday during snow-free months
to learn about native ecosystems
and work outside helping restore
prairie and oak savanna at Lakeside.
The Cooperative Lakes Area
Monitoring Project is looking for
volunteers to monitor lake health.
Free training and equipment will be
provided. Call Lakeside for further
information.

1. TWO SHELDON IOWA SUMMERS –
A highly-stylized autobiography. In a certain real sense, I, of
course, am the main character. However, I have also in some
sense become multiple characters. As I absorbed deeply
other’s joy and sadness as well as my own. It seems to me
my full lifetime is condensed here to 308 pages, including the
days since and the days yet to come. A sweet and tender
time overlaying the painful and tragic times. I have not forgot
any of it, nor do I wish to. I expect it will be with me as a fellow
traveler to the end.
2. A SUMMERTIME SCRAPBOOK –
An homage to the Waldo and Gladys (my mom and dad)
De Vries birth family. With special recognition intended for
the three out of six who died long, longer, and longest ago.
As of today, May 30, 2017, the oldest of the four De Vries
boys, Rod, is among the dead; one brother, Ken, is in his
eighties, and two are in their seventies, myself, Don, 74, and
still with me, my baby brother, Terry, 70.
3. THE STORY BOOK
– (Includes Two Stories written long ago) –
(a.) COME BACK MOMMY, ERNIE, AND BERT -
(“Heidi” Is In New York City) Her mom had been shot.
(b.) LINDA THE SECOND COMING –
