Let the Games Begin!
This month, all eyes will be on Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the opening ceremony of the Games of
the XXXI Olympiad. NBC will televise coverage of the games from August 5th through August
21st on their family of networks, in addition to streaming it live on NBCOlympics.com. The
summer Olympics feature competitions in 28 sports to include swimming, volleyball, boxing,
gymnastics, fencing, cycling, track and field, and even trampoline! It's time to cheer on your
country's athletes as they (hopefully) take home the gold! Check out Rio2016.com for more
details.
Fun Facts About Left– Handers
Did you know that August 13th is International Left– Handers Day? In honor of this quirky holiday,
here are some interesting facts about left– handed folks. Lefties are often better at multitasking
and are more likely to pursue creative careers. They make especially good tennis players (almost
40% of the top tennis pros are lefties). It is said that left– handed college graduates go on to
become more wealthy than right– handed graduates. They are better at 3D perception and seeing
underwater. And, out of the seven most recent U.S. presidents, four have been lefties, including
President Barack Obama.
Children's Books for All Ages
Even though a book may be intended for a younger audience, that doesn't mean you won't enjoy it
as an adult. Grab one of these classics and read it aloud with your child for some bonding time.
Charlotte's Web by E. B. White –A wonderful and timeless tale of friendship and sacrifice. A
Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle – This sci– fi novel follows three children on a trip through
time, searching for their father. Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt – This novel asks the question:
What if you could live forever? The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis – Four
siblings discover the land of Narnia, which is trapped in a never– ending winter and ruled by the
evil witch.
Melon Salad With Honey– Lime Dressing
Nothing is quite as refreshing as cold melon on a hot summer day. This fruit salad will be so
popular at your next event, you will see the bottom of the bowl before you know it! Dice one
cantaloupe, one honeydew, and one small seedless watermelon, removing any seeds or melon
rind. Place all of the fruit into a large bowl. Finely chop 1⁄4 cup of fresh mint leaves and sprinkle
over the top of the fruit. In a small bowl, whisk together 1⁄3 cup honey and 1⁄4 cup freshly–
squeezed lime juice. Pour dressing over fruit and gently toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate to chill.
Serve cold.
tot-sized olympic games
Before the Olympics closing ceremony on August 21, you and your kids can
host your very own Olympic Games party! Below is a suggested Olympic Games
party itinerary. Prepare all activities in advance and modify them for the weather
and the number of guests participating.
Crafts for the Opening Ceremony
When guests arrive, assign each one a different country to represent and have
them create national flags using poster board. To save time during the party,
research in advance several countries’ flag designs and cut out construction
paper shapes, symbols, stripes, and stars, so that guests can assemble their
flags quickly. As guests finish their flags and approach the starting line for
the first sporting event, announce each one as an Olympic athlete:
“Representing France is Trevor! Representing Brazil is Olivia!” Search
YouTube for the Olympics theme music to play in the background.
Sporting Event
Start your Olympic Games with a simple sporting event such as a foot race
or relay across your backyard. Indoor options include having guests perform
their own dance routines, individually, or leading the group through
a series of silly calisthenics. Set the starting line and finish line
in advance. Brainstorm a few race challenges to keep your
games interesting, such as hopping on one leg or turning
somersaults to the finish line.
Snack Time
Hydrate the Olympic athletes with flavored sports drinks and bottled water. Don’t
forget to treat them with Olympic torches: vanilla ice cream in cones or
cupcakes with white icing, piled high, in the shape of a flame.
Final Championship
Conclude the Games with a more complex sporting event such
as an obstacle course, soccer game, or, if you have pool access,
a dive competition (for those that can swim). Set up obstacles in
advance and test for any safety issues. Purchase, or make, simple
medals to award the final championship winners, and finally, stand
the gold, silver, and bronze medalists on stools for recognition.
watermelon sorbet
Ingredients
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 cup water
6 cups watermelon
chunks, seeds removed
2 tablespoons lime juice
Chocolate morsels
Directions
Bring sugar and water
to a boil in a medium saucepan over medium-high
heat. Stir to dissolve the sugar. Reduce heat to low
and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let
cool to room temperature, about 45 minutes. Cover
and refrigerate 1 hour to chill. Puree the watermelon
and lime juice in a food processor until smooth. Strain
the puree over a large bowl to remove tiny seeds. Mix
the sugar syrup into the watermelon puree and freeze
for 30 minutes. Stir again and return to the freezer,
repeating every half-hour until the liquid is completely
frozen. Serve in chilled dishes, adding chocolate
morsels to look like seeds.
