“Date of birth?”<br />

“December 7, 1965.” <strong>The</strong> sounds pass<strong>in</strong>g through his mouth are stuttery and clanky, an old eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />

struggl<strong>in</strong>g to turn over, each syllable a chore. But at least it seems he’s be<strong>in</strong>g understood; Vance is jott<strong>in</strong>g<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs down.<br />

“Age?”<br />

<strong>The</strong> man is quiet aga<strong>in</strong>. His name and his birthday are durable relics, lodged <strong>in</strong> his bra<strong>in</strong>. Much as you’d<br />

like, you apparently can’t forget everyth<strong>in</strong>g. Years, he’s proven, are disposable. So he starts do<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> math,<br />

uncurl<strong>in</strong>g his f<strong>in</strong>gers to keep track. Okay, but what year is it now? <strong>The</strong>y solve <strong>the</strong> problem toge<strong>the</strong>r, he and<br />

Vance. It’s 2013. Thursday, April 4. Christopher Knight is forty-seven years old.<br />

“Address?” asks Vance.<br />

“None,” answers Knight.<br />

“Where is your mail sent?”<br />

“No mail.”<br />

“What address do you put on your tax return?”<br />

“No tax returns.”<br />

“Where are your disability checks sent?”<br />

“No checks.”<br />

“Where is your vehicle?”<br />

“No vehicle.”<br />

“Who do you live with?”<br />

“No one.”<br />

“Where do you live?”<br />

“<strong>The</strong> woods.”<br />

This is not <strong>the</strong> appropriate time, Vance understands, to <strong>in</strong>itiate a debate about <strong>the</strong> veracity of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

claims. Best to let <strong>the</strong> man cont<strong>in</strong>ue. “How long,” she asks, “have you been liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> woods?”<br />

“Decades,” he says.<br />

Vance would prefer someth<strong>in</strong>g more specific. “S<strong>in</strong>ce what year?” she presses.<br />

Once more with <strong>the</strong> years. He has made <strong>the</strong> decision to talk, and it’s important to him to speak strictly <strong>the</strong>
