What to expect when you study English?
I have been thinking a lot about this question, specially when it comes to a student who is
studying their first weeks at The House School. Students normally expect not to have any kind of
difficulty whatsoever, but we all know that that is not true. Each stage you reach brings us new
challenges and we feel that we don´t have what it takes to overcome such challenges. That´s
why we invited some of our advanced students to give some advice on how to make your course
easier. Also, just to show you that The House course really works, two students will talk about
their experiences abroad – and how The House helped them through the adventures. Studying
is important, and we have easy ways to do it! Students from Sertãozinho are here telling us about
their favorite movies.
Travelling
E u r o p e
“In February, my Family, my friends and I traveled for 14 days and we had the opportunity to visit many countries in
Europe. First we went to Paris and visited many sights like the Eifel Tower, the The Notre Dame Cathedral, many
gardens and museums. Then we went to London and visited more famous places like the London Eye, the Queen's
Castle, more museums and gardens, the Big Ben and a church before continuing our journey.
We ended our trip visiting Amsterdan city in Netherlands, which is an extremely beautiful city with its flowers and its
navigable channel, not to mention the big amount of bicycles. Having the opportunity to travel abroad made me
realize the necessity of speaking English. Now I realize the importance of the language in my life.”
Chocolate
avocado cake
This indulgent, fudgy vegan bake is topped with a rich
frosting - you'd never guess that it's free from dairy,
eggs, wheat and nuts
Prep: 30 mins
Cook:25 mins
Level: easy serves 12-16
Ingredients
For the cake
a little dairy-free sunflower spread, for greasing
1 large, ripe avocado (about 150g)
300g light muscovado sugar
350g gluten-free plain flour
50g good quality cocoa powder
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 tsp gluten-free baking powder
400ml unsweetened soya milk
150ml vegetable oil
2 tsp vanilla extract
For the frosting
85g ripe avocado
flesh, mashed
85g dairy-free sunflower spread
200g dairy-free chocolate
Chocolate
70% cocoa, broken into chunks
25g cocoa powder
125ml unsweetened soya milk
200g icing sugar, sifted
1 tsp vanilla extract gluten-free and vegan sprinkles,
to decorate
Method
1. Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. Grease 2 x
20cm sandwich tins, then line the bases with baking
parchment. Put the avocado and the sugar in a food
processor and whizz until smooth. Add the rest of the
cake ingredients to the bowl with 1/2 tsp fine salt and
process again to a velvety, liquid batter. Divide
between the tins and bake for 25 mins or until fully
risen and a skewer inserted into the middle of the
cakes comes out clean.
2. Cool in the tins for 5 mins, then turn the cakes onto
a rack to cool completely. While you wait, start
preparing the frosting. Beat together the avocado
and sunflower spread with electric beaters until
creamy and smooth. Pass through a sieve and set
aside.
3. Melt the chocolate, either over a bowl of water or in
the microwave, then let it cool for a few mins. Sift the
cocoa into a large bowl. Bring the soya milk to a
simmer, then gradually beat into the cocoa until
smooth. Cool for a few mins. Tip in the avocado mix,
icing sugar, melted chocolate and vanilla, and keep
mixing to make a shiny, thick frosting. Use this to
sandwich and top the cake. Cover with sprinkles or
your own decoration, then leave to set for 10 mins
before slicing. Can be made 2 days ahead.
Pittsburgh, mid-1950s. Troy Maxson is a sanitation worker,
working a shift with his best friend Jim Bono. Troy has been
happily married to Rose for 18 years and they have a teenage
son, Cory. Regularly popping in and out of their lives is Gabe,
Troy's brother who suffered brain damage while fighting the
Japanese in WW2, and Lyons, Troy's 34-year old son from a
previous relationship. Troy was a baseball star in the late-1930s,
playing in the Negro League, and still bears a grudge for his not
being able to play Major League Baseball. He projects this, and
other experiences, onto everyone around him, particularly Cory,
who has the potential to be a football star. More than just
influencing Cory's career prospects (adversely, it appears), Troy
has a larger-than-life impact on the lives of everyone around him.
English Idioms
It´s raining cats and dogs
= It is raining heavily = There is a heavy downpour
You may have heard the expression
“It’s raining cats and dogs” and
wondered what it means.
When someone uses this English
idiom, it means that it is raining very
heavily. That there is a downpour
(heavy rain).
Oh course it has nothing to do with cats,
dogs or any other animal falling from
the sky. It’s just an idiomatic expression
that started a long time ago (nobody is
exactly sure how it started) and it
continues to be used until today.

The exchange programn of your dreams!
I have been in United States since January 2017. Planning my exchange program wasn't an
easy task. I had many doubts along the whole process: “Where to live?” was my first question!
New Zealan, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada. I ended up choosing to live in the US, San
Diego/California, since the weather is pretty similiar to what we have in Brazil.
“How long should I spend there?”: I had planned to spend 53 days, I've met wonderful
places, incredible people from all over the world. For my surprise, 53 days was not enough, so I
decided to stay longer!
“Where to study?”: I'd searched through the internet to find out about the best methodology
and cost/benefit. So I found a school called Connect English, which, by the way, is similar to
The House School!
“Where to live?”: I've chosen a fraternity where I live with 7 other students. In this house
there are girls from different countries such as Japan, Brazil, Russia, Turkey and Kasakhstan. I
mean, many different cultures in just one place! Through sharing, it was inevitable not to fall in
love with the experience!
The trip: I left Brazil and in New York I had to get across the frightening Immigration – that's
when things got off the track! When asked about what I would do in the US, I said I wanted to
study English. I don't know why but after this I was sent to a small room, for a second interview!
My body was all shaking at this time, I was completely scared!! Fortunately, they just looked
through my documents and I was released from the place – I was relieved!! Because of this
delay, I missed my flight to LA, but I was set to another one without any problem.
I've been in San Diego for 3 months and the immersion is helping a lot to understand and be understood. It's pretty
tough at first, but things start working out fine as the days go by! The classes at The House were essential for my
survival! Our school does prepare us for the real situations in a foreign country! If you're also willing to go on an
exchange program, start planning now!! “Distance between a dream and the reality is called discipline”.
knowing our students
Working in Nestlé S.A with Roberta (...)
Daiane Bispo is 28 years old and is still living in th US! Way to go girl!!
Hi guys!! I'm Roberta and I'm 26 years old. I've been working at Nestle Business
Services in Ribeirão Preto for 3 years. Nowadays, I'm a Junior Analyst at the
Human Resources, an area called “Hire to Retire”. My section is responsible for
taking care of the employee's life, since the hiring process until the retirement or
resignation. The process end-to-end is basically the following steps: personal
administration, updates, benefits, Training & Learning and Contact Center.
In one of my last experiences, I was part of the Training & Learning Team and had to manage
online courses, presential courses, trainers, evaluations and tests in a global Nestlé platform, making
reports, organizing the employee virtual dossier of training. Also, I had the opportunity to be the point of
contact to Mexico and Chile. Today, I'm part of a mission aimed at a methodology of
Partnership with Markets called “Total Service Quality”, a model developed to
emphasize the continuous improvements in the processes, bringing added value to our costumers.
It's worth saying that I identified myself a lot with projects and changes of Mindset. I confess that each
new challenge not only brings me professinal development but also personal improvement, where the
abilities required (for example excel) results in a healthy competition.
Besides this, in a multinational where the processes are more globalized each day, it's inevitable that
we don't bump every day with the English language. During calls, company policy, trainings, etc, it's
essential to understand and speak very well! With no doubts, we can understand processes easily, just by
training. However, abilities which are long-term acquired, such as speaking a foreign language, and
which depend on the dedication of each one is very valued by the companies. These people can be
checkmated in decision-taking or in fierce selective processes.

Some o four advanced students are giving you some tips and hints on how to boost your
course at The House school and make the very best o f it! Read what they said and put their
suggestions to work for you! The benifts are sure to come!!!!
Bruno Pignoli Barcelini,
I'm an Industrial Engineer and I finished the post-graduation in Safety Engineering. I work at
Paletrans Equipment in Cravinhos. I like the atmosphere of the school, and every week I learn
new things and new expressions. The teachers are attentive and they help me in everything
that I need. The pieces of advice that I can give to reach the high level are:
1 - You must practice the MNEMOTECHNIC steps; 2 - Participate in the classes and try to
speak as much you can; 3 - The Show Off Class is important too!!! Because in your job you
may receive the visit of a foreigner and it will be important to you to know how to explain
your job in English. You should participate in the Show Off Class, despite the shyness. 4 -
When you finish the Chapter classes, it will be necessary to keep studying! You can listen to
podcasts, watch videos in English with subtitles in English and in the classes; 5 - You must
keep speaking as much as you can!!
“I'm an IT Support Analyst at CT Informática. When I started the course in February of 2016, I
had just a basic level of English. That was basically what I had learned in the last school, and
the English that I've got watching movies and playing video games.I noticed that I have
improved my English during this time and I owe it to this school, which has a funny and very
immersive environment and also to the teaching method that really works. The stories of the
chapters hold the attention of the student and it is a good way to show the content that will have
already been assimilated for the grammar classes, even if you haven't noticed it yet. And I'm
seeing the efforts of the school to improve the study methods even more with the chapters in
the student´s portal, what I think is very important because nowadays when you are busy all the
time, you can go to the portal and study a little when you get a free time. And also the video
classes of the chapters that students will have access before the class at the school, so they can
be even more prepared. Even if you think you don't know anything about English, if you study
and follow the methods, certainly you'll see your evolution quickly.”
"My dream was to learn English. At my age, 68, I believed that this dream would still be
possible. At this moment, it is very gratifying to realize that this goal is being achieved by me.
Now, I finished The House steps and what I enjoy most besides continuing to practice the
English language is the coexistence with the school staff: receptionists, teachers and students.
The affection of everyone, the smiles, the interest in meeting our learning needs are evident in
every class of the school. The attractive method used by this educational institution prevents
the students from having the tiring routine of a repetitive and boring class. Among the many
advantages, the best I think fits the diversity of schedules and the possibility of scheduling
classes according to my needs and available time to still have contact with all the teachers and
students. These motivations lead the student to expand knowledge and make new friends.
This is very interesting. I like it. Some advice for the students: train a lot, have goals at each
stage, do not be afraid to ask and clarify doubts.”
“What I liked most was that all classes were with different people, what doesn't let me
remain in my comfort zone. My advice is, take all your free time to listen to something
in English, think in English and study hard for that!”
“I have finished all books and what I liked the most was the high creativity of the author…
those stories! There is a rich environment with well-constructed characters… it catches our
attention. Moreover, it brings you the usage in a natural way with the grammar issues that you
are learning, as well. Besides that, to improve your English level, after the Chapter classes,
come back to the book and its Chapters to memorize the knowledge you have gotten. Finally,
have a lot of Upgrade classes whenever you can. Good luck!!!”
International Youth Day has been celebrated in many
different countries of the world on the 12th day of August, as
agreed on by the United Nations on 1999. The people of South
Africa, however, celebrate the date on June 16.
This is so because on June 16 of 1976 a series of important
protests began in the township of Soweto in Johannesburg that
resulted in the deaths of hundreds of young people who were
fighting for the right of learning in English.
In 1974 a decree was passed that forced all black schools to
teach their students certain subjects in Afrikaans, a language
that neither the teacher nor the students were fluent in. This
caused the alienation of black students from subjects as
Mathematics, Arithmetics and Social Studies, leaving them only
with effective studies of home crafts, wood work, metal work,
agricultural work, etc.
Students from several schools in Soweto went on strike and
organized a group, the Soweto Students' Representative
Council, to decide what should be done about this. They
believed black students should have the same education as
white students.
On June 16, between 10.000 and 20.000 black students of
varying ages marched from their schools to the Orlando
Stadium, but found that the police had barred their intended
route. The organizers of the march asked the students not to
provoke the police, and they proceeded through another path.
After the students had arrived near Orlando High School, the
police assaulted them with a dog, which was killed by the
protestants. The police then began to shoot directly at the
children. Among the first dead were students as young as 13
years of age.
The hospitals were filled with badly hurt children. Doctors
refused to give the names of the protesters to the police, to
protect them.
To this day, education remains one of the most efficient ways
to elevate a country. Fighting for a better education is the only
way to conquer a better future.

Happy Anniversary,
Ribeirão Preto!
The area where Ribeirão Preto is now located was once
inhabited by native people who hunted and gathered. Up until
the XIX century, the Caiapós were the only residents of the
region. However, after much of the gold from Minas Gerais had
been taken, people started coming down in search of land for agriculture.
Ribeirão Preto used to belong to the city of São Simão, and was not a particularly rich place at first.
A big step in our emancipation was the coming of the Mogiana railroad, which allowed the coffee
cultivators to sell their products more efficiently and brought Ribeirão much profit.
The official date of Ribeirão Preto's anniversary (June 19th) was only decided a century after the
creation of the city, and it celebrates the creation of the Parish of São Sebastião, the protector saint
of the city.
Today, Ribeirão Preto is a modern city with many options of business and entertainment. There are
4 different shopping malls, a variety of bars and clubs, and some theaters as well. People from all
the regions often come to spend the weekend here.
There are also many people who seek Ribeirão Preto to get a higher education than they could
have access to in their own towns. Ribeirão is home to several universities, including a campus of
Universidade de São Paulo, one of the most renowned universities of Latin America.
Some of the most visited places of the city are Teatro Pedro II and Pinguim Chopperia. But don't
think these are our only attractions. Nowadays, there are many craft beer breweries all over town,
many options of good food and cultural events.
What are your favorite places in Ribeirão Preto? What do you enjoy here that is different from other
places? Where would you take a friend on his/her first visit to the city?
W hat is your favorite movie and why do you like it?
Anderson Augusto Polegato
“Fight Club is a movie with Brad Pitt and Edward Norton and it tells the
story of a man that is facing a lot of problems in his personal life and a
mysterious Fight Club helps him to face his problems. I like this movie
because something unexpected is always happening when you don't
expect it to happen.”
Wancley Santos
“The new Power Rangers movie is my favorite one. It has
brought back all the good sensations I used to feel when I was
little and it's special because I never felt this way with another
movie before.”
Graciele Cássia de Sousa
“I don't have a favorite movie but I have a favorite TV show. I started
watching some episodes of “Arrow” and its story is about a man that
wants to make his city a better place by fighting against evil. Although
he does get it wrong sometimes, he worries and wants it to be safe.”
Gabrielle Piati
“My favorite TV show is “Grey's Anatomy” and I like it because its
about medicine, hospitals, surgical things – and these are things I
like too. The story may be sad in many moments but it is so good! I
love to look at the doctors working in the hospital and it inspires me
to work in this area too.”
Laura Battaglia Ferrancini
“I am a student. My favorite movies are the Harry Potter ones. I love these
movies because the entire universe of Harry Potter is very different from the
other types of movies and that's why I love to watch them.”
Jennifer Alves
“My favorite movie is “Ever after”. I like this movie
because the interesting thing about it is that it tells a
different version of the “Cinderella” tale.”
Adriana Batista da Silva
My favorite movie is “Moana”. This movie is about a polynesian girl
and it tells a story about when she was little and the ocean chose
her to restore the heart of the “Tefidi”, polynesian goddess of life.
For this, Moana has to go on one adventure with Mawe, the
demigod responsible for all the trouble in first place. I like this
movie because besides all her family wanting her to stay on the
island and rule her people, Moana is discovering her personality
and chasing her dreams.”

Valentine's Day in Brazil
Valentines Day, which celebrates and honors love, is celebrated on 14th
February in many places. A special day dedicated to love and lovers is
observed in many countries; however, the dates vary depending on the
customs and traditions followed in those countries. Valentine's Day in
Brazil is the time for couples to celebrate their love for each other by
exchanging gifts, cards and flowers among other things.
It is not uncommon to find couples in Brazil coming up with their own ways of commemorating this day. Valentine's Day in
Brazil is not celebrated on 14th February, rather similar celebrations known as Dia dos Namorados (Day of the
Enamored) are held on 12th June. Grand parties, dance, music, delicious foods are some of the important elements of
celebrating this day in Brazil.
Dia dos Namorados, akin to Valentines Day is celebrated not just by married couples, but even unmarried couples
celebrate it in a grand manner. Couples prefer to do something different for their partners and surprise them with their
lovely gestures. One way to surprise your partner can be by sending him messages throughout the day. After he gets a
few messages, he will spend the whole day in eager anticipation, waiting for your message. How you celebrate the day,
whether you are in Brazil or in any other part of the world, are entirely your choice.
Valentine's Day Traditions in Brazil
In Brazil, Dia dos Namorados is celebrated the eve of Day of St. Anthony. Known as the Marriage Saint, he believed in
bringing good fortune on marriages, so this day is celebrated on a grand scale. Celebrations in Brazil consist of lavish
parties, stunning costumes among other things, and commemorating Dia dos Namorados is no exception to this
tradition. So, throwing in a huge party where family and friends are invited, and by buying gifts for your beloved is one way
of celebrating this day.
Single women perform a ritual known as Simpatias on this day, to find a good boyfriend or husband for themselves. The
day is also celebrated with the exchange of love messages in the form of figurative objects among couples, both married
and single. The figure and silhouette of cupid is popularly exchanged by couples, with each other on this day. Exchange
of greeting cards among couples is another tradition, associated with the Valentine's Day celebration in Brazil.
Around this time if you are traveling to Brazil with your beloved, you will find that shopping malls are crowded with people
looking to buy gifts for their sweetheart. Make sure that you buy the appropriate gift and if you cannot go to the shop due
to some reason, you can even try out online shopping. There are numerous options, when it comes to online shopping
and you also get home delivery of the gifts.
There are various traditions associated with celebrating Valentine's Day. If you want to celebrate the day in a different
way, traveling to Brazil with your partner might be a good idea. There, you can celebrate the day in the traditional way,
observed in that country.
Happy B-day June!!!
Social project
Did you know that Mestre Bimba was
one of the greatest fighters in Salvador?
In 1930,Manoel dos Reis Machado challenged all the fighters from Bahia and said that he would beat all of
them with his Capoeira. At that time, Bimba brought back to capoeira the idea of fighting, because it had been
lost with the folklore surrounding the art at that time.
Bimba and his students used to participate of events to show
the efficiency of Capoeira Regional. Then, they normally won
every fight by K.O.
Despite the attack side of this fight, no one was never hurt
inside Bimba's school, cbecause there were many principles
and traditions , which are, by the way, followed until today.
Some of them are:
Ÿ Respect the physical and moral integrity;
Ÿ Respect the Master and show discipline while practicing;
Ÿ Take care of the security of the other practitioners.
Clip from a paper, circa
1930. It says: ‘‘It is not
easy to figh a capoeira
player’’.
For this uprising in capoeira, Mestre Bimba has been pointed
as the greatest Capoeirista of all times, and won many
homages after death, such as “Dr. Honoris Causa”, given by
Universidade Federal da Bahia recognizing Mestre Bimba as
a real educator.
The challenge of Mestre
Bimba released to all the
fighters of Bahia.
Luta Regional Baiana is an example of union and harmony
Sports in general bring
athletes together in a spirit of
union ad harmony. But very few
sports can do that like our
Capoeira regional does. First,
because the methodology
developed by Mestre Bimba
allows the practitioner to use
his/her natural skills to find
his/her way through the “jogo”, as
we call it. Second, because you
constantly need your partner to
develop the skills you consider
necessary for yourself. A very
good example is our “roda
mensal”, that happens every first
Saturday of the month. It´s our
time to measure how effective
our training routine was, and how
much we are evolving. But it´s
also an opportunity to meet our
friends, and those we barely see
during the training sessions!

Barons of Ribeirão Preto
Sports
American Football
Barões de Ribeirão Preto – Barons of Ribeirão Preto is the third team founded in the
countryside city of São Paulo, created to improve the level and diffusion of
American football in the region, with the intention of getting to most Brazilian
championship finals. Its name came in honor of the nostalgic times of glory in
the city of Ribeirão Preto, when it was dominated by the “Barões do Café” and
their vast farms which surrounded the whole town.
The team had its foundation in the first semester of 2014 but had its real
formation in November of the same year. With the hardwork and
determination from the players and help from friends and families, the Barões
hosted many events, sales of pizza, raffles, mugs and an infinity of things to
gather the necessary money to buy the equipment.
In the second semester of 2015, the team managed to acquire all
necessary protection equipment, and now goes on training hard to start
competing for its first friendly games, and preparing to, in the future,
join the league of American football – American football League of
SP. The goal of the team is to bring the attention of the country back to
our city, just like the “Barões do Café” did with their coffee plantations,
but this time with our dearest American football!

FUN
English JOKE
" A Hippo Orders a Drink"
Humor in Britain often uses "understatement",
as does this joke. It starts with a very large
animal (a hippopotamus, or "hippo" for short)
going into a coffee shop, a very strange idea,
isn't it? When the waiter tries to cheat the big
hippo, we naturally expect a big response.
One hot day, (1) a hippo went into (2) a café, sat
down at a table and (3) ordered a large glass of
orange juice with ice. (4) The waiter was very
surprised to see a hippo, and to hear it talk, but he
got it the glass of orange juice with ice. The waiter
thought the hippo knew nothing about money, and
so, when the hippo gave him (5) a five pound note,
the waiter gave him just one pound in change. “I
hope you enjoyed the orange juice,” said the
waiter. “We don’t often (6) get hippopotamuses in
here.” “With orange juice at four pounds a glass,”
said the hippo, “ I’m not surprised.”
(1) a big animal from Africa with a very big mouth
and small ears, (2) a small restaurant where we
can drink coffee or other drinks, (3) ask for food or
drink in a restaurant, (4) paper money equal to five
pounds, (5) when restaurants "get" customers, it
means they "have" customers (customers are
coming in).
Horoscope
Cancer
June 21
July 22
Explanation: Part of the humor of this joke, I
think, is because the hippo's simple answer
seems surprisingly human. Another part of the
humor comes from the fact that there is usually
another reason we don't see many hippos in
cafes - because hippos normally swim in
African rivers, rather than sit in London cafes!
2017 can be a highwater year full of major achievements, crucial
decisions and changes for you, Cancer. Great things are possible with
so much transformative energy aimed your way.
The January Sun-Pluto conjunction in Capricorn is also square
Jupiter in Libra and Uranus in Aries. This creates a T-square that points
straight at Cancer. Your home life, domestic environment, your home
town, your country, and your home planet Earth rarely get this much
celestial attention. Make great progress on any or all of these home
fronts as soon as you can.
It's also a great year to successfully conclude a long, difficult project
or to make that big change that takes you to a better place...
geographically, mentally, and/or emotionally.
The separating conjunction of Mars and Neptune in Pisces gives
you enhanced intuition and instincts. This offers powerful advantages
all year long. Will you take them?
When the Sun enters Cancer, Mars will be there, too. Jupiter will be
in the heart of Libra, your Fourth House of home, family, and the
conclusion of things. This year may take some hard work, but great
energy, luck, and generosity are at your fingertips all year long.
