What’s trending...
Technology based markets such as the
security sector are no strangers to emerging
trends and it is during IFSEC week that the UK
industry sees the latest growth areas come to
the fore
For people outside the security (and fire) business ours is
probably not seen as a high-tech industry, however those in
the sector know that it most certainly is. In fact, we often
hear from companies that offer installer training and apprentice
placements that young people coming into the sector are
surprised at how technologically driven it all is. In the last few
years for example, Wi-Fi networking, Cloud-based solutions,
apps, ‘smart’ homes and system integration have all come into
regular play for the installer and cameras are keeping bang upto-date
with consumer televisions in terms of resolution; this
business is sexier than you might think!!
This is why for many of us a trip to a trade show or roadshow
is a must - you can see the latest trends that are gaining traction
from vendors as you walk around the exhibition halls with various
companies promoting their takes on the evolution of the common
security and fire systems and solutions to the modern day
problems.
Sometimes the trends are pushed a little too early (such as
with the original biometrics and analytics of the past) when the
rush to market with a flawed product affected the future take-up
of the idea - however with an industry that spends a lot on R&D,
technologies like biometrics and analytics have ironed out the
teething problems and both are now established.
So what of 2017? This month we’ll all be off for a few days to
look around IFSEC to see which products and services will be
promoted to UK installers and, no doubt, there will be a few
surprises. I expect that this year we’ll see the introduction of
plenty more systems that take advantage of apps and the Cloud
for remote access purposes and I expect that the use of analytics
for non-security based applications will also be prevalent. I’m still
not sure about the general use of drones in the industry (a bit too
niche I think) but even these will be showcased at ExCeL - along
with systems for bringing them down to earth.
One thing that we can be sure of is that the race to raise
camera resolutions has thankfully pretty much levelled out at 4K
with the most common resolution for applications being HD. The
Avigilon 7K launch of two years ago appeared to make
developers stop and take stock of where they were heading while
installers were still catching up to HD. Today it is the intelligent
use of the data captured by cameras that is the main surveillance
trend. Don’t expect banks of new cameras to be the norm at
events - it’s going to be applications that will be the focus for
manufacturers for a while. Oh and on a topical note, expect the
security of networked systems to be a feature in the halls too.
Today’s security industry is clearly more Tomorrow’s World than
many might expect!
INDUSTRY NEWS
In brief
INDUSTRY NEWS
After just ten months of
building the business and
an ARC from scratch, remote
monitoring company
Professional Surveillance
Management (PSM) has
achieved NSI ARC Gold
Accreditation; Monitoring of
CCTV Systems, Fire and
Intruder Alarms.
GJD has announced a new
service deal with VMS, a
provider of installation and
maintenance services within
the audio visual, networking
and security markets. The
deal aims to strengthen
GJD’s customer relations
and levels of field support.
FIA to offer new fire detection
and alarm qualifications
The Fire Industry Association (FIA) will be
offering four new qualifications for the fire
detection and alarm sector, available to book
from early July. The four new qualifications are
designed to reflect the four main job roles of the
sector – Designer, Installer, Maintainer, and
Commissioner – with one qualification for each.
The new qualifications have been designed
to give those working in the industry (or those
just joining or wishing to join) a professional indepth
knowledge of their specialist field, and
are a Level 3 on the Regulated Qualifications
Framework (RQF), equivalent to an A-Level or
NVQ Level 3. In addition, the new qualifications
are equivalent to a Level 4 on the European
Qualifications Framework – one level higher
than that specified in the newly released
Standard, EN 16763 – the services standard that
specifies the minimum level of education for
those working in the fire and security services
sectors.
Each qualification pathway begins with a
Foundation unit, which gives learners a
thorough understanding of the relevant
Cyber
standard. The
industrysupported
scheme
helps prevent the
vast majority of
cyberattacks and
sets out a range of security controls to help
protect an organisation against cyber threats
to its IT systems and software.
The scheme comprises two levels: level
one, Cyber Essentials, requires a completed
self-assessment questionnaire, with
responses independently reviewed by an
external certifying body. Cyber Essentials Plus
covers the same requirements, but with tests
of an organisation’s systems being
additionally carried out by an external
certifying body using a range of tools and
techniques.
The move means SSAIB reportedly
becomes the first certification body within the
security and fire sectors to achieve Cyber
Essentials Plus accreditation.
standards, and best practice for the industry.
Upon passing this, learners can then progress
through the other units before choosing their
final unit from a choice of four, which will
qualify them in their chosen area.
The qualifications will be available
nationwide at a range of centres in England,
Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland and are
approved by the relevant government bodies for
official qualifications in each country.
Open Day demonstrates fully
functional PSIM solution
Following the international launch of its next
audience and have some fun whilst doing so.
Study shows value of CCTV
CCTV cameras provide evidence “useful” to the
police in two-thirds of the investigations in
which they are available new research
suggests. The Nottingham Trent University
study (reported in the European Journal of
Criminal Policy and Research), involved
analysing more than a quarter of a million
crimes recorded along the railway network by
British Transport Police over a five-year period.
It was found that CCTV was available in the
investigation of almost half of those crimes –
111,000 offences – and proved useful in 65% of
those cases.
When CCTV was deemed “useful” by the
police the probability of a crime being detected
rose significantly from an average 23% to 48%.
Large variations were identified in relation
to crime type and the extent to which cameras
were viewed as useful.
Cameras were deemed useful in 62% of the
83% of robbery investigations in which they
were available. For serious assault cases, they
were useful 61% of the time – available 74% –
and when investigating theft from a shop,
cameras were useful in 53% of a possible 60%
of cases.
They were also useful for most public order
investigations in which they could be called
upon – 44% from a possible 52% of cases.
At the other end of the scale, usefulness of
cameras was particularly poor for cases of theft
from motor vehicles, the researchers found –
useful just 16% of the time, from a possible
50%. For theft of a motor vehicle, cameras were
useful in fewer than half of investigations,
helping police in 24% of a possible 59% of
incidents.
For the dignitaries and invited guests there
was time to take a tour of the facilities in the
custom designed accommodation in the
Cambuslang Investment Park, to sample
Scottish hospitality and to take a closer look at
the latest developments.
Following an introduction from MD Jay
Shields, the guests joined John Downie and
Graeme Anderson in the demonstration room for
an in-depth look at the technology.
John Downie Sales Manager said:
“Demonstrating the latest edition of Titan Vision
to such an important group of people was
extremely daunting. However, I could tell from
the level of interest and comments from the floor
that the audience was extremely interested and
impressed. For some this was the first
opportunity to see a fully functional PSIM
solution in action and for other an opportunity to
focus on particular requirements both technical
and commercial”.
For theft from a person they were useful just
14% of the time despite being available for 33%
of investigations.
Having useful CCTV was associated with
significantly increased detection rates for all
types of crimes, except drugs, fraud and public
order offences, the study showed.
The largest change was for robbery, where
the probability of detecting an offence
increased from 8.9% without useful CCTV to
55.7% with it – while for criminal damage the
likelihood quadrupled from 10% to 40%.
Detection rates for thefts were extremely
low without CCTV evidence – just 2% of thefts
from a person were detected without the use of
cameras, the study found.
Dr Matt Ashby, lead researcher and
criminologist in Nottingham Trent University’s
School of Social Sciences said that the study
shows that CCTV is clearly a powerful
investigative tool, particularly for more serious
crimes.
“This does not mean, however, that there
should be a rush to install cameras in all types
of locations. Consideration should always be
given to the potential for frequent or serious
crimes to occur, or whether there’s an
opportunity to use cameras for multiple
purposes,” he said.
THE BOTTOM LINE
IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL
The interview that gets the facts from the top
This month Simon Banks talks to Nigel Jackson, Managing Director of
Swift Fire & Security and Director of Marlowe PLC.
Swift was recently purchased by Marlowe
PLC and you’ve remained as Managing
Director and a major shareholder. How
important was it for you to find the right
buyer for the company and how did
Marlowe meet your criteria?
It is vital to find the right buyer: someone with
a shared vision and the financial muscle to
make that vision a reality. When Marlowe first
approached me I spent many sleepless nights
wondering if this was the right opportunity, not
only for me, but for everyone at Swift. I firmly
believe that it is our team that makes Swift
the successful business it is. Over the last 35
years we have built this business together and
I could not have allowed the transaction to
proceed if it had jeopardised the future
careers of my team. Thankfully Marlowe
provided assurances that as the Platform
Business within their emerging Fire & Security
Division, the merger not only secured the
future growth of Swift Fire & Security but also
provided my team members with fantastic
opportunities for career progression across all
areas of the business. Marlowe is committed
to becoming a market leader in our industry
and has embraced Swift’s long held values of
Customer Care and Innovation. Now, with
every acquisition we complete, we are one
step closer to achieving our goals. I could not
be more satisfied with the outcome.
Swift and CSL have been working together
for nearly 21 years. How important have
relationships like this been during Swift’s
journey?
Building, securing, nurturing and developing
relationships is vital in all areas of business and
I consider Swift’s Supply Chain a significant
factor in our success. Our long standing
relationship with CSL exemplifies an important
aspect of the Swift Mission Statement:
‘Partnering’. CSL have been integral to our
success in many ways, including the award of
several national, multi-sites, maintenance and
monitoring contracts. The award of these
contracts hinged on Swift’s ability to offer a
quality monitoring solution at a cost effective
price, which CSL has supported us in delivering
time after time. You can see by looking at our
shared history and growth that we have grown
together not only because of our shared ethos
of World Class Customer Service and the
application of the latest innovative technologies
but because you and I and more importantly
our team members have developed long
standing, personal and professional
relationships. I’m sure that these relationships
and our partnership will continue long after
both of us retire!
How important has the growth of your
signalling estate been in your overall
company growth?
The growth of our signalling estate has been
fundamental to our success. Since I became
Managing Director, I have focussed on
expanding our recurring revenue contract
base due to the value they offer compared
to one off high risk project revenues. Our
Sales Team have been successful in
securing both national and regional
maintenance and monitoring contracts – all
of which benefit from these recurring
revenues. The key to our success is that we
can offer our customers a multi-discipline
fire and security maintenance solution.
In 2015, following the growth of our signalling
estate and many years of outsourcing our
monitoring, we took the decision to purchase
a custom built NSI Gold, CAT II Approved
Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC), formerly owned
by Romec. Re-christened Swift Connect, the
ARC is fully functional, keeping the national
estates of retailers, banks, local and central
government bodies, secure, night and day.
After leading Swift by yourself for so many
years, what has it been like to work with
the Marlowe Board?
When I first decided to sell Swift Fire &
Security I did wonder how I would deal with
YOU SAID IT!
interacting with a boss after 34 years of
being in charge! Working with and as a part
of the Marlowe Board has been really
enlightening for me. Each of my fellow Board
Members are financial experts with particular
business specialisms - including the former
CFO of ADT - and each has experience of
successfully buying, growing and developing
businesses. None of us are shy about voicing
our opinions or challenging each other and
we all back up our opinions with facts which
will always win out. I’m learning from the
Marlowe Directors every single day and they
are quick learners when it comes to
understanding the very unique industry in
which we operate.
While giving up an element of control is
difficult, it has been refreshing for me not to
be the last stop in a long chain with
hundreds of jobs and livelihoods ultimately
resting on my decisions. I’m glad that in
Marlowe I have found a Board that I can trust
to share that responsibility with, securing the
future of the business we have all worked so
hard to build for 34 years.
Speaking of the future, what’s next for
Swift and Marlowe?
Growth! I know it sounds trite but when I first
established Swift with the other founding
Directors in 1982, I quietly nurtured the
ambition that Swift Fire & Security would not
only aspire to, but one day rise to the top of
the fire and security industry’s Premier
League. As a lifelong Bolton Wanderers fan I’m
sure you can imagine that I am ever the
optimist! Whilst I’m not quite so sure about
the future of my football team, with Marlowe’s
backing I’m no longer just hopeful, but
confident, that Swift Fire & Security will soon
rise to the top of the Premier League.
This is an indoor unit from the Illustra IP dome
series, with a 30x zoom lens and 2MP HD
resolution. This particular variant of the
dome is for internal use only and has a black
finish with a plastic surround to the camera
module and metal side plates that cover the
electronics to one side and the assembly gearing
at the other. It has no transparent bubble to
surround it so there is no curved surface to impact
the image quality. It has a 6” (154mm) diameter
and is 7” (178mm) in height.
Usefully it can be stood on the three mounting
screw heads that secure it to the base plate for
testing or set-up, with ample room for the
network and power leads.
Software
The supplied disc has three folders named as
“Illustra Connect” which holds the network
discovery software, its support files and multilanguage
manuals. “Illustra Pro PTZ” holds the
Quick Start Guides and User Guides for the domes
in multiple languages. A final “Regulatory folder
holds a single multi-language product safety and
regulatory notes document. Documentation is
supplied in eighteen language variants.
The 67 page Illustra Connect User Guide
instructs how to install and use the Connect
software which is basically an ONVIF compliant
Operation
The dome can be powered from PoE but this must
be PoE Plus capable of 25.5W. Alternatively a 24v
AC (22-30v) power supply can be used. Maximum
current is stated as 1.4 Amp but in normal
operation was found to be under 500mA for this
indoor version. If both PoE and external power are
connected then the dome will take its power from
the first connected supply and the secondary can
be used as a back-up supply in case the first
source fails.
When powered up there is a delay of around 90
seconds for initialisation before the dome’s
position calibration routine begins. This finishes
after approximately 30 seconds more at which
point the fan operates. The fan is relatively noisy
and runs constantly but should not be too loud
when the dome is installed at ceiling height.
The dome can be accessed via a web browser;
Edge, Chrome and Firefox variants were
successfully used but the image displays in a
restricted mode without QuickTime. As QuickTime
is no longer supported by Apple, this message
should perhaps be modified in a future firmware
update.
Some frustration regarding settings was
encountered particularly with regard to Time and
Date adjustment and occasional image freezing
but this was put down to local browser issues.
Operatio with an ONVIF compliant NVR did not
show any such problems.
Even without QuickTime, the image provided
was found to be perfectly useable for image setup
and camera configuration purposes.
At first use, you are encouraged to provide a
strong password but this is not mandated.
The Live image screen has on-screen controls
for key PTZ operations and these are supported
by mouse wheel control of zoom and keyboard
shortcut commands.
Information is provided to request RTSP
streaming via player software. The help command
calls up the full 153 page configuration manual in
a new browser tab.
TEST
This dome is built to
a high standard, it
performs very well
and provides a good
level of reliable
functionality
9.0 out of 10
(continued from p12)
Performance
The camera is given a sensible manufacturer’s
sensitivity figure of 0.4 Lux colour at 1/30th
second (0.1 Lux colour at 1/8th second) and 0.04
Lux B&W at 1/8th second. These were readily
achieved with reasonable colour images albeit
with AGC noise, to well below 1 Lux scene
illumination.
The 30x zoom range performed well with the
4.4mm to 132mm lens giving a horizontal field of
view from 63.4° to 2.3°. The additional 12x digital
zoom can be useful in some situations and
although progressively reducing the effective
resolution gave reasonable images through most
of the range.
The camera does not have any image flip or
mirror functions so most of the sample images in
the manual are inverted.
A micro SD card of up to 32GB capacity can be
fitted and is accessed by way of a slot in one of
the side covers. Although this would be difficult
when mounted at ceiling height it is possible
without having to remove any parts. Formatting
and Unmounting commands are available via the
browser interface so it is not necessary to
remove power to install or change the
SD card if the unit is in situ.
Event recordings are stored
in avi format and include a jpg
image of the associated
action that triggered the
event.
Wide Dynamic settings are
Off, Auto, True WDR and
Advanced WDR. The Advanced
setting tended to give an
overall grey appearance to the
image with the True WDR
setting giving a better contrast
range but the Auto setting
gave the best overall results
when viewing a scene with a large external
window. No specification figures are given for the
image sensors actual dynamic range.
While the camera does not have any form of
infrared lighting it is very sensitive to infrared
when in night mode so can be used with infrared
support lighting.
User PTZ control is allocated on a “Last user
first served” basis so any requirement to
prioritise would need to be managed by the
control system.
Positioning appears to be by analogue rather
than stepper motors with a well-balanced
mechanism and has direct gearing rather than
belt drive. The tilt range is an impressive 105° and
includes an auto-flip feature. Pan operational
speed is from 0.25° to 100° per second and is
proportional to zoom allowing sensible control
over distant subjects. Any preset position can be
reached in less than 1 second with zoom position
in under 4 seconds.
The camera supports up to 96 presets, 16
patterns, 16 sequences, 16 areas and 32 privacy
zones, giving a large amount of flexibility for
automated patrols.
A reset button is accessible through one of the
side plates and this forces a camera restart is held
for more than 5 seconds.
The motion detection is very simple with just
an overall detection area and sensitivity settings
of Lowest, Low, Medium, High and Highest.
However this operated well and movement events
can be associated with “Fault actions” to define
what to do, such as Record to local memory, E-
mail, FTP, CIFS or PTZ action control.
When set to record it records avi files to the
Micro SD card with user defined pre and post
event record durations. The associated jpeg file is
of the triggering event.
Conclusion
While some of the functionality may seem limited
compared to some other recent offerings, this
dome is built to a high standard, it performs very
well and provides a good level of reliable
functionality.
Product Test follow-up
Following the review of the Serage
SRTVIVDPRO camera in last month’s
edition, UK distributor G-Tec wanted
to point out two factors which they
feel were not covered by the test and
are worthy of note for installers.
1. The lens is motorised and can be controlled from the DVR not
just by the dongle inside the camera (which really should only be
used as a back up if the camera is not connected to the DVR yet)
but the idea is that the customer can mount the camera, not
having to open it and then zoom it from the DVR to the required
angle where then the camera will auto focus on its own. This is a
feature which G-Tec believes gives a benefit to the installer
especially if the customer requested the angle of view to be
changed in the future, where this can be done remotely without
having to visit the site .
2- The camera has a built in cable management base - another
benefit for installers.
Master Lock 2650
PushKey Padlock
Master Lock 2650EURD PushKey Padlock is priced
at £20.90.
Surprisingly little force
open the lock which
would be appreciated
with strength/grip
issues
8.0 out of 10
American brand Master Lock recently
unveiled a consumer focused portable lock
that requires no key-turn to unlock. The
PushKey Padlock requires less than 2.5kg of pull
down force to open and is aimed at people with
strength challenges.
The 2650 PushKey Padlock provides peace of
mind for carers and relatives of elderly people or
those suffering with arthritis; a simple daily
activity such as unlocking a padlock may seem
straightforward to most but for those with sore
and weak bones it can be a strenuous ordeal.
The operation of the lock involves a bumping
action to the key head that both opens and closes
the lock without the need for tight grasping,
pinching or twisting of the wrist. The large flat key
head makes it easy to grip, a feature that is
particularly beneficial for the disabled and elderly
with joint pain or limited finger dexterity.
Master Lock has also devised a groove system
on the bottom of the padlock that acts as a key
guide, aiding users with sight challenges to easily
insert the key. Furthermore the portable lock has
been designed to snugly fit most school and
hospital lockers, making it ideal for disabled
students or hospital patients.
The indoor, black padlock has been
constructed from zinc, ensuring optimum strength
and reliability and the hardened steel shackle
provides resistance to cutting and sawing. The
In use
The box for the 2650 model contains an
instruction sheet for the padlock, two large key
head covers, four keys and the 200g padlock unit
measuring 60mm wide and 70mm in height. The
instructions are fairly straightforward as there is
only one action required to open the lock; insert
the key and push to open. To make this simple
procedure even easier the unit features a key
guide to direct the key to the keyway.
Surprisingly little force is needed to push open
the lock which would be appreciated by those
struggling with strength/grip issues.
Alternatively, the lock can also be opened by
inserting the key and pulling the padlock down.
The outside of the lock is rubberised providing a
good surface for gripping, although similarly little
force is needed for this method.
The key stays in the padlock whilst the lock is
removed from the item being secured (locker,
cabinet etc), then to close up the padlock
afterwards, a quick turn of the key to align the
body with the shackle will lock the padlock. This
again requires very little effort on the part of the
user and as such also prevents the keys from
being dropped during handling.
The oversize key head covers are particularly
useful for those who experience difficulties
holding small items and also help with the
location of the key!
Conclusion
The population is living longer and disabled
people are living much more enriched lives than
before so products aimed at helping out where
genuine struggles prevent the everyday use of
common systems are always welcomed. This
padlock seems a very simple solution to address
the problem of how someone with limited
strength or mobility can secure their items
however there doesn’t appear to be anything else
currently available using the same ‘push’
technique. At the moment the 2650 is the only
model to feature PushKey operation.
The target market for this indoor padlock
includes young children, the disabled and the
elderly however the simplicity of the unit might
well make it appeal to a wider audience as we
have all had the experience of trying to free up
particularly stiff padlocks in the past!
Sequrinet is one of the most secure network products available
on the market today.
Installers will have the option of Enhanced Password Control (EPC). This will prohibit the use of ‘1234’ and other
easily infiltrated passwords and only allow the use of passwords upon selection, the EPC will remove any
backdoor user capability and will disable P2P and DDNS options by default.
Videcon understand that certain installations will not require such a high level of security; therefore, EPC is purely
optional. Compatibility to organisations requiring a stringent level of password protection is essential and it is this
compatibility that undoubtedly makes the Concept Pro recording devices the most secure in the market
suitable for use in government, public space and banks to name but a few.
Enhanced Password Control, easy interoperability and the potential for use in a varying array of situations
ensure that Sequrinet is one of the most secure network products available on the market today.
P2P networking makes it simple for installers to configure mobile viewing of the Concept Pro
Recorders on smartphones and tablets. Installers simply activate mobile viewing by
scanning the QR code on the unit into the Concept Pro app (available for Android and iOS
devices free of charge) connecting through the server straight to the NVR.
Fiber optic detection range
is increased
Senstar has announced that
FiberPatrol-PR, its fiber optic
fence-mounted sensor for
perimeter applications, now
provides up to 50 km (31 mi)
of protection per processor,
more than doubling the system’s previous
detection range capability of 24 km (14.9 mi).
The intrusion locating accuracy of the system
has also reportedly improved to within 4 m (13
ft) from the previous 8 m (26 ft).
FiberPatrol-PR uses fiber-optic technology to
detect and locate intrusions. The system can
differentiate between disturbances caused by
real intrusions and environmental disturbances
such as wind and rain. FiberPatrol-PR can detect
and locate intrusions even when there are
multiple simultaneous intrusions or in the
presence of spatially-distributed environmental
noise that could mask the detection capability
of other long-range fiber optic sensors. As well,
the system’s design allows detection to
continue up to the point of a cut in the sensor
cable. The system can also be deployed in a cutimmune
configuration.
INTERVIEW
The power to succeed
This month we talk to Sharon Ramsay of Elmdene about the world of
powers supplies and the role of the technology in the security sector
n these modern days of networked global
Ibusinesses it is quite easy to overlook the
importance of a power supply. In fact, in years
gone by many exit polls at business continuity
exhibitions placed email, web-connectivity and
employees as the most valuable factors to a
business when without electricity no matter how
good your staff are, they couldn’t get into the
building, switch on their computers or go online.
Electricity supply is often taken for granted. In
the security sector most systems are powered
by electricity so again it is a vital utility.
PSI caught up with Elmdene’s General
Manager, Sharon Ramsay, to find out more
about the power supply and discussed the
factors that installers need to keep in mind
when specifying systems.
How have the last twelve months been
for the company?
It's been a very good period for us but also
challenging because as an ancillary provider we
have to align our product range within third
party components. So whereas the technologies
on the market are changing we have to think
ahead so we can be ready to move with the
trends. Therefore we are reshaping the business
to suit these changes.
Historically we have been very intruder
biased with sirens and contacts, which in the
past were all hard-wired, but now the market is
moving towards wireless systems. We, as an
ancillary provider, don't have the protocols for
wireless systems so our shift has led us to think
outside the box of just intruder leading us into
access control, fire, video and PoE - the key
trend areas of growth.
Today everyone is concerned about
worldwide threats and we're seeing those
trends moving from breach detection (where an
alarm has been activated by somebody entering
a premises) to the perimeter, detecting the
threat at an earlier stage. This presents us with
new opportunities but it does mean that we
can't stay still with this in mind, we need to
make sure our growth areas match that of the
industry. All of this thinking leads to new
products and technologies such as solar and
efficient power management for the perimeter
which is all very exciting for us.
So you are seeing some changes in the
industry?
Yes we are. If you think back to a few years ago
we were told that everything was going to move
from analogue to IP/PoE yet today we are
seeing a big market for analogue HD and that
presents us with a particular challenge. Going
forward we have to compete in both of those
areas; we have to provide the installer with the
relevant products who wants to use existing
analogue systems but we also have to manage
the ancillary products for those that are using
PoE.
We are established for the analogue side
with mains and back-up systems but PoE
presents more of a challenge because people
are just integrating that with the IT
infrastructure with no thought to back-up time
with a UPS. In the event of a failure how long
will the UPS support the critical devices in the
system? We have been talking much more to
installers and challenging them with "what if?"
scenarios and quite often we find that the UPS
INTERVIEW
“We believe that by
choosing a British
designed product you
are getting more
reliability in your
system and we will not
change our approach
because of the
warranties we offer”
22
(continued from previous page)
will only give a few minutes of back-up because
they have specified a cost effective UPS which
ultimately is not suitable. As a result we are
tailoring our products to suit the needs of the
industry but we need to get the message out to
people and to get them to think about this is
across the industry.
Your products are designed in Britain,
why is that important in a global market?
It is very important as we are increasingly facing
a battle of Far Eastern manufacturers with low
cost technology and production. While you can
indeed get a lower purchase price for some
overseas power supplies there is no control on
the quality of the components plus you have no
control over the manufacturing practices
involved.
We believe that by choosing a British
designed product you are getting more
reliability in your system and we will not change
our approach because of the warranties we
offer. We would quickly lose our reputation if we
did that. That is why we are fully behind the
recent BSIA campaign about the purchase price
not being the real cost of the system - it's down
to the suitability and longevity of the system.
Don't get me wrong, almost everybody who
is manufacturing in the UK or Europe probably
at some stage will use component parts that
have been manufactured in China, but the
difference for a British manufacturer is that you
can control the components and specify exactly
what you want. The current political
environment has a part to play in this too as,
especially in the US, where there are potential
tariffs being put upon imported goods. Along
with Brexit, therefore global business could be
about to change too.
So apart from the components, aren't all
power supplies the same?
We would advise people to remember that if you
have no power, you have no system which is why
you need to make sure that if you need a 5A
supply that is what you get and for the period of
time you require it. So it is critical when
specifying a power supply that it delivers the
power in whichever application, and wherever it
is to be fitted. Putting lower spec products in is
a bad idea all around and is a real weakness in
any system. From a sales perspective this is a
real challenge for us.
Is there any advice for installers when it
comes to power specification?
I think installers need to explore the background
of a power supply before committing to it. Who
designed, manufactured and specified the
power module is very important. If you want a
4A supply check that the unit is not 4A including
battery charge as this will only give you 3.2A.
Installers should always over-rate the load
requirements and think about any future load
updates. Also look at the features and functions
rather than just the basics. In general I would
say there are a few steps to take.
Confirm reliability: Is it a PSU brand that has
been in the field for many years? That way you
can be sure that it is reliable. If it wasn’t then
the company won’t last long!
Efficiency: Is it utilising the latest switch
mode technology? If not it will cost the user a lot
more in running costs and will run hotter and
therefore result in early component failure.
Cable entry/exit requirements: There's
nothing worse than putting PSU on a wall
without easy access for cable management.
Check warranties: Established manufactures
give long warranties and they do this because
they know they will last. Be cautious of PSUs
only with short warranty periods.
Technical support availability: If you do
experience any installation or field issues, can
you get access to technical support from the
manufacturer? They will be able to solve any
issues very quickly with a quick call. No support
could cost you a lot of wasted time.
Any predictions for the future?
As a company we are always looking ahead to
see what the trends and shifts might be and I
see less focus in buying products and more into
rentals and bundling technology into a monthly
fee rather than being on the bottom line as a
purchase price. The integration of systems will
continue and more business partnerships will
arise as a result and I do think that analogue
still has a place in CCTV installations over the
next few years.
Selling service contracts
t is surprising how little time is invested by
Ibusiness owners and management in the
security sector in growing the service contract
base and related income streams. From our
experience working with security installers, at
least 80% of management time is invested in
designing, quoting, project managing, installing
and getting paid for the installed system. Yet
most of the profit and the value of the company
are in the service area.
There are so many opportunities to develop
the service business, but without the right
mindset it will not get the focus. It is good to
remind ourselves of the benefits of selling
service contracts:
• increases company value
• provides recurring income stream.
• delivers higher margins
• provides follow on sales in call-outs, extra
works and upgrades.
• provides the means of repeat customer
contact
• reduces the threat of competition.
• generates a positive cash flow.
Recognising the benefits, develop a plan to
accelerate the development of your service
business. Set some key objectives for what will
be achieved over the next 12 months and
identify what needs to be done differently.
For instance if you wish to grow the sales of
service contracts linked to your own
installations you might follow these five steps.
• Minimise downtime
• Replace consumable items on a planned
basis, avoiding unnecessary call-outs.
2. Sell more service contracts to end clients at
point of sale
Secure the service contract at the same time as
the systems installation order. For this to be
achieved, the salesperson has to believe in the
value of the contract to the customer and to the
company. The system quotation should always
include a service contract which is separately
priced.
3. Sell more contracts to the end client when
the initial installation order is won through a
contractor
Most contractors will only concern themselves
with the initial installation and the warranty
cover. If a service contract is to be secured, then
the end client needs to be contacted as part of
the sales process when the installation is
handed over to the client.
4. Sell more contracts as the warranty expiry
approaches
If you have not been successful at selling
contracts at the same time as the installation
order, make sure you have a sales process in
place with sales letters and follow up as the
warranty expiry approaches.
(continued over)
In the first of a new
series, Jim Rathbone
of Rathbone Results
looks at why growing
your service contract
base is the key to
increasing value
1. Develop an improved quotation template for
selling service contracts
Communicate the value of your service
proposition and the merits of taking out a
service contract. A summary of the benefits of
the preventative maintenance should always be
provided e.g.
• Peace of mind through regular servicing.
• Extend equipment life
• Safeguard the protection of property,
assets and employees.
• Ensure the system performs to its optimum
throughout its life.
• Achieve compliance with H &S standards
• Reduce risk of unexpected costly
breakdowns.
www.psimagazine.co.uk
25
Increasing the focus
on growing the
service contract base
is key to increasing
the value of a security
installer, both
customer and
company value
(continued from previous page)
5. Sell more contracts post warranty using the
help desk
If the customer has not taken out a service
contract by the time the warranty has expired,
there is a further opportunity. When the
customer rings the helpdesk for a reactive call
on their system, he will be faced with an invoice.
Use this as opportunity to sell a contract.
There are lots of opportunities to grow
service contract sales.
• Carry out a test telesales campaign to
existing customers who do not have a service
contract in place and convert them.
• Cross-sell contracts on other product
disciplines that may have been provided by
competitors.
• Consider investing in an indoor salesperson
to increase the focus on contract sales.
• Identify the key accounts that have the
highest potential for service and contact
them.
• Sell contracts to lost quoted installations.
• Test and measure different lead generation
methods e.g. telesales, Google AdWords,
email marketing, direct mail and of course
your engineers.
In summary increasing the focus on growing
the service contract base is key to increasing the
value of a security installer, both customer and
company value. Having the right mindset is
essential otherwise all your energy will be
consumed by the business of installing. Develop
a plan for growing your service business, check
you are using the 5 steps above for selling more
service contracts linked to your installations.
Test some new lead generation methods to sell
more contracts.
the event will be snooker star John Parrott.
Former World Snooker
Champion and
television personality,
John Parrott MBE is a
charismatic snooker
speaker for events and
private functions. Defeating
Jimmy White in the World
Championship Final of 1991,
John also won the UK
Championship in the same
year, becoming only one of
only handful of players to
ever do so. John compiled
221 competitive centuries in
his career, proving to be one
of the most consistent and
skillful players of his era.
Turning professional in 1983, Parrott made his first televised
debut playing Alex Higgins in the 1984 Classic, causing a stir by
winning the match 5-2 and going on to reach the semi-finals
before being beaten by Steve Davis. After this performance, John
became a favourite to win the World Championship within five
years. John enjoyed fourteen consecutive seasons within the top
sixteen ranked players of the sport, with eleven of them within the
INNOVATION ON SHOW
This year IFSEC International is being held at London ExCeL from 20th to
22nd June. Here we look at a selection of some of the new products and
services being showcased
IFSEC international is the UK’s biggest security
trade show and has evolved considerably over
the years, following the trends in the market
place and the way in which we want information
delivered as well as bringing in new audiences
and markets.
The show has moved on from the UK installer
dedicated event held in Birmingham to an
international show aimed at buyers, specifiers,
installers and end users of security technology.
Key audiences on the IFSEC 2016 show floor saw
growth with an increase of the installer and
integrator professions by 7% and significant
international visitor participation at 34%. As a
result of this change the event has changed to
reflect emerging market trends and also to
provide more than simply a place to walk around
exhibition stands.
This year, for example, there will be a number
of seminar theatres, each with a different
programme every day of the show. However for
many, the highlight and main focus of the event
will always be the exhibition floor, where in 2017
there will be over 600 security suppliers
showcasing over 10,000 products.
With numbers like that there is no way we
could feature everyone and list all of the new
product launches that will be announced during
the three days, so we have focused on a select few
companies that should be on your ‘ones to visit’
list while you make your way around the show.
Keep an eye out for the PSI team while you are
there too!
PIONEERING AI FOR VIDEO SURVEILLANCE
Hikvision will be
showcasing the latest
products and
technologies,
including the new
analogue Turbo 4.0
series
IFSEC Stand: E800
Hikvision the world’s leading supplier
of innovative video surveillance
products and solutions, will be
exhibiting the latest in surveillance
technology at IFSEC International
2017 on 20-22 June at the ExCel
Centre in London
The theme of this year’s Hikvision stand will be
Pioneering AI Technology for the Video
Surveillance market and with this event being
the largest security
exhibition in Europe
welcoming all parts of the
buying chain in the
security from
manufacturers to end
users it is no better place
to launch this innovative
technology.
Hikvision will be
showcasing the latest
products and technologies,
including the new analogue
Turbo 4.0 series, the impressive H.265+
codec and thermal imaging cameras. The event
will also be an opportunity for attendees to see
cutting-edge advances in surveillance technology,
including the launch of a brand new product and
an innovative new set of technologies that come
out of the ‘Deep Learning’ concept that is
sweeping through the IT industry.
Hikvision will also be demonstrating their
popular DarkFighter range with revolutionary
ultra-low light technology, the new PanoVu range
with 180 degree vertical and horizontal viewing
capability at 24MP and a host of video intercom
solutions suitable for a number of different
applications.
CALCULATING THE COST OF OWNERSHIP
Panasonic is set to introduce a
total cost of ownership calculator
at IFSEC 2017, comparing the
lifetime cost of security cameras
from leading manufacturers to
determine which provides the best
value.
It comes as part of a new direction the
company is taking in the security market,
encouraging integrators and end users to see
that the traditional approach of specifying a
requirement and requesting a box price doesn’t
actually give an idea of the true lifetime cost of
the typical CCTV system.
With new suppliers entering the market with
cheap security systems, the attraction to them is
obvious. But the initial purchase and
installation cost is only the start. For a truly
accurate comparison, the total cost of ownership
needs to be taken into account, including a
thorough appraisal of ongoing maintenance
costs, rather than just the first initial investment.
As a platform for exposure at the show, the
company has sponsored the Security
Management Theatre, where Panasonic will be
taking part in a manufacturer panel discussion
on the future of video surveillance. In addition
Panasonic will also be speaking about cyber
security, against a backdrop of the increased
threat of hacking and tampering especially in
light of recent high-profile incidents.
In addition the company will be hosting
exclusive lunch and learn sessions with preregistered
attendees, and are set to take place
alongside meetings every day during the show
across the three days at London’s ExCeL.
SKYHAWK IS SMART
Today’s surveillance systems need
to work as a single, unfailing unit.
From capturing and storing, to
retrieving and analysing, you and
your customers need to know that
every element is up to the task.
As camera technologies continue to deliver
greater volumes of higher resolution
footage than ever before, traditional
storage hardware no longer delivers the
performance needed of it.
Ten years ago, Seagate begin to work with
established surveillance partners to develop a
hard-drive built specifically for the rigours of a
surveillance workload. Today, the Seagate
SkyHawk range of drives leads the industry,
forming the backbone of surveillance
installations across the globe:
• NVR and DVR Ready
• Up to 10TB capacities
• Up to 256MB cache
• Designed to handle:
o Up to 64 cameras
o 24x7 operation
o Write-intensive workloads
• ImagePerfect firmware cuts dropped
frames
• Optional 3 year +Rescue Data Recovery
Service
With a workload rating 3x that of a desktop drive
and ready to record up to 90% of the time,
SkyHawk surveillance drives are equipped with
enhanced ImagePerfect firmware to minimise
dropped frames and downtime.
Seagate and Rasilient
Unreliable video surveillance can be disastrous –
that’s why Rasilient’s patented NFD (no frame
drop) technology eliminates recording gaps and
helps drives self-heal. Working with SkyHawk, a
surveillance-dedicated drive, they’re redefining
reliable surveillance.
PROMOTION
Performance cameras
Businesses are under constant pressure to effectively safeguard people and property. For both
the security and fire industries, IP cameras are an increasingly popular option for providing the
best protection possible. Ranges such as Honeywell’s Performance series can offer users superior
image clarity and definition, enabling them to support a more sophisticated security solution
ne of the biggest challenges for fire
Odefence systems is unwanted activations.
For businesses looking to minimise these
events, IP-compatible fire threat verification is
one of the best options. In the past, security and
fire systems have been considered two separate
elements of building design. However, the rise
of new Internet of Things technology has led to
improved systems that can incorporate both
requirements. By combining video content
analytics technology from CCTV monitoring with
standard smoke and flame detection,
businesses can develop an integrated, effective
warning system against fire.
With performance cameras in place, fire
alarms can be verified in real-time, a huge
advantage for company owners. The fire
verification market continues to suffer from the
alarming frequency of false alarms, which has
led to a number of fire and rescue services no
longer responding to alarms that haven’t been
physically verified. Consequently, it is vital to
have a solution in place for verifying the
authenticity of the alarm as it occurs.
Investing in a fire detection system with
performance cameras and video analytics also
provides customers with improved situational
awareness. In some cases, users are offered
convenient mobile visibility from anywhere,
which allows them to take informed and
immediate action to prevent casualties and
minimise damage to the property. Video footage
is also important for post-event analysis of the
breakout. By reviewing a recording of the fire,
those in charge can determine what started the
fire in the first instance and take the necessary
steps to avoid a future reoccurrence.
Performance cameras and video verification
are particularly beneficial for hazardous or
unmanned facilities, or for large buildings where
it takes more time for the smoke to reach the
ceiling detectors. Examples of such
environments include shopping centres and
warehouses. For a number of these types of
sites, video is a necessary instalment to ensure
adequate protection against fire and the
personal safety of any occupants. Additionally,
performance cameras and video verification can
be a worthy investment for numerous small and
medium-sized businesses looking to protect
their assets across a range of industries. Given
the significant financial impact that fire can have
on businesses, investing in these technologies
is an option that should be strongly considered.
The capabilities of these combined security
and fire systems have only improved in recent
years. The CPU power in cameras has improved
substantially, and the overall quality of images
has also increased. The growing prevalence of
IP-enabled technology in the market has led to a
surge in popularity for these combined
technologies, both in homes and businesses. As
the technology becomes more affordable, sites
that already have a fire/smoke detection system
installed have even more reason to integrate IPcompatible
fire threat verification.
FIRE SAFETY
Qualifications - that’s what we need!
What the industry needs now, is qualifications, sweet qualifications
says Ian Moore, CEO of the Fire Industry Association
veryone seems to be talking about Brexit
Eright now. With the elections coming up on
June 8th, and local elections happening as I
type (a vote for every key strike), it’s only
natural that we are all wondering what will
happen to business in the future.
Business aside – what about recruitment?
What about staff? After all, every business rides
its success on the amount and quality of the
staff it has (or doesn’t have – which is even more
of a headache). With the current Brexit talks, we
don’t know whether EU workers will have to
return to their countries of origin. That may
cause an issue for some companies with Brexit
scaremongering, as staff may start to look for
jobs at home – back to Poland or Romania or
wherever because they’ll be worried about
whether they can stay in the UK.
That said, I don’t think with the immigration
question there will be much of an issue with EU
workers leaving the UK, and the reason for that
is that we’ll probably end up with a system like
the Australians do. In other words, what the
government is trying to do is to stop the
transient worker. We want to keep qualified
workers. In all probability, it will be the
construction industry, who I believe will suffer
worse than those working in the fire industry.
We want skilled and qualified people to stay, so
the government should (hopefully) work out a
way for them to remain in situ.
We do recognise that there is a high volume
of people who are not particularly highly skilled
or qualified who may not, under a new set of
rules, be allowed to stay, which may leave
vacancies.
But how to do you sort the skilled from the
unskilled? In this instance, qualifications in fire
detection and alarm systems are going to be
extremely useful to anyone wanting to prove
their competency. Of course, in the fire industry
we have our other ways and means (third party
certification for companies, various schemes
such as BAFE for example, which show
competency – or simply being an FIA member).
Our industry desperately needs for
companies to get their staff qualified as a
benchmark of quality for the industry.
Thankfully the FIA has been working and
researching this issue for years and we recently
made the announcement that we will be
releasing four brand new formally recognised
“Our industry
“As a professional industry, we
need to be doing more. The new
qualifications will make a world of
difference to us as well, as people
start to realise that joining the fire
industry is a career, not just a stopgap
industry that they can hop in
and hop out of”
qualifications in fire detection and alarm
systems. There will be one for each job role
–commissioning, maintaining, designing, and
installing fire systems, which will become the
gold standard for the industry to show a higher
level of professionalism.
We should all take the opportunities that are
presented to us. I think there is going to be
more opportunities for installers and
maintainers in the light of Brexit, the actual
technicians rather than management. With the
new qualifications, available to book later this
year, and the possibility of people exiting posts
in the lead-up to Brexit, there will be more
opportunities for ‘British’ people, should this
happen. That is still not a definite of course. But
it is a great time to start talking to young people
and enticing them into a career in the industry in
case of a sudden vat of vacancies appearing.
It’s not an initially attractive industry, the fire
industry. Young people don’t leave school or
college thinking, ‘I want to get into the fire
industry’. Nobody says that. There’s also the
security side, the electronics; it’s very linked.
But they don’t want to get into that either: they
all want to be vets, or doctors, or nuclear
engineers. People tend to sort of ‘morph’ into
the industry, just by accident. I find a lot of new
entrants tend to drift into the fire industry by a
connection saying ‘Come and work for me, I
know you’ve got these skill sets’. More needs to
be done. We are already feeling the need for a
huge recruitment drive due to a huge skills gap
in the industry.
As a professional industry, we need to be
doing more. The new qualifications will make a
world of difference to us as well, as people start
to realise that joining the fire industry is a
career, not just a stop-gap industry that they can
hop in and hop out of.
As for those who have been operating in the
industry for years – the new qualifications will
be the perfect opportunity to up-level that
experience and knowledge and give that extra
competitive edge to the business. It could just
be the selling point that tips the scales into
making a few extra sales in the potentially
challenging world of business of the future.
Come and see us at FIREX, 20-22nd June at
how Brexit will affect business and how our new
Today, unlike times gone by, fires are not
necessarily associated with a positive
outcome. They are rarely used for cooking or
generating heat. Instead, fires usually stand for
destruction – especially for companies operating
high-bay warehouses, cold storages, datacentres,
archives and more. According to Allianz Global
fire is the major cause of property losses by
number of claims and value. The Allianz Risk
Barometer 2017 also stated that a business
interruption is statistically the highest risk for
businesses. According to the study the average
loss caused by a business interruption is 2.2 Mio €.
However, average material damage caused by fire
only amounts 1.6 Mio €.
A comprehensive risk analysis starts at
the beginning
With this in mind, a comprehensive risk analyses
must be the starting point when planning a reliable
fire protection system for businesses.
Fundamentally, all fire protection measures are
viewed as an integral part of a comprehensive fire
protection plan. Preventative fire protection
consisting of structural, technical and
organisational fire protection should be the
primary consideration with Fire defence through
the fire service or self-help being only a secondary,
“backstop” position.
However, this alone does not completely
address a company’s protection interests when it
comes to risk management. If, for example,
delivery capacity, availability or competitiveness
need to be maintained, standard building
regulation compliant fire protection will often not
be sufficient. Technical fire protection can
contribute to the further minimising of risks.
Automatic fire detection systems with modern air
WAGNER’s signature product: TITANUS® systems
TITANUS® air sampling smoke detectors from WAGNER have been successfully used
for decades and made the company a worldwide leader in fire detection. The various
models of TITANUS® are ideally suited for the widest range of applications. With
MICRO SENS, up to 5 small to medium-sized rooms can be monitored simultaneously
– optionally with ROOM IDENT for precise localisation of the seat of the fire. PRO
SENS is used in difficult ambient conditions. With a pipe length of up to 300 m and 72
sampling points per module, rooms with an area of up to 3000 m2 can be monitored.
TOP·SENS has a highly-sensitive detection, which is perfectly suitable for large rooms
such as recycling depots. For sensitive clean or heavily air-conditioned rooms, as well
as computer chip production, SUPER SENS offers the best fire detection. RACK SENS
has been designed for use in EDP, server and switch cabinets: it is ultra-flat with an
installation height of 44.45 mm (1RU) and optional integrated extinguishing.
sampling smoke detectors help to reliably detect
fires and mean that countermeasures can be
implemented sooner.
Harsh environments form no obstacle for
aspiration smoke detection systems
Conventional point-type detectors need a fire to
have reached a certain size and produce a certain
amount of smoke in order to be detected.
Smoldering cable fires, for example, are quite
difficult to detect as they usually produce not much
smoke, but can cause immense damage. Racks in
high-bay warehouses, that can reach over 30
metres, push point detector systems to their limits.
Above 10.5 metres reliable detection is not
guaranteed with this technique. As stipulated
within the BS5839-1:2013 standard, the height
limit of a point type detectors is 10.5 metres.
However, the concept of aspiration smoke
detection systems actively analyse the ambient air
of smoke aerosols and particles to detect fires at a
very early stage. The operational safety of the
technology is not impaired by large heights,
extreme temperatures or even high air humidity
and strong air flow conditions. In order to avoid
disturbing the aesthetic appeal of rooms, such as
in historical buildings, museums or hotels, the
detectors can also be installed in the ceiling void.
Mode of operation: technology with High-
Power-Light-Source
Aspiration smoke detectors actively extract
samples from the ambient air via piping. With the
optical detection method High-Power-Light-Source
(HPLS)-technology they can detect smallest
pyrolysis particles precisely – only two grams of
material conversion are sufficient for this.
Therefore, they are 2,000 times more sensitive
than regular point-type detectors.
In the early stage of a fire, smoke gases are
distributed in the room, especially in airconditioned
areas, the smoke is swirled and thus
thinned. Aspiration smoke detectors draw in air
with each sampling point and transport it
collectively to the detection unit. The accumulative
effect results in the smoke density within the
detection device increasing meaning that the
response sensitivity can be increased by up to
50%. Combined with an intelligent fire pattern
recognition, false alarms and the consequential
costs resulting from interrupting the operation can
be avoided.
ire alarm and detection systems are an
Fintegral part of a property’s fire protection
strategy. However, the management and
maintenance of these systems are all too often
overlooked, poorly maintained and/or poorly
managed. The severity of this situation too is
often underestimated, and in such cases leaves
people and assets badly exposed, can invalidate
insurance policies and in many cases fall foul of
the law.
System management
In any premises subject to the requirements of
the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
or equivalent legislation, a responsible person
or duty holder must carry out a fire risk
assessment that considers the safety in case of
fire of all ‘relevant persons’. A relevant person is
any person who is or may be lawfully on the
premises or any person in the immediate vicinity
who is at risk from a fire on the premises.
Particular attention needs to be paid to those at
special risk, such as disabled people and those
with special support needs, and must include
consideration of any dangerous substance likely
to be on the premises. The person with day-today
responsibility for the system, not
necessarily a competent person, is now termed
‘premises management’ to remove the
confusion with the former title of ‘responsible
person’ which had been used in the previous
edition of BS and is used in overarching
legislation in England and Wales as described
above.
This person may be the first point of contact
on fire alarm problems for any staff or service
contractors. They may also keep the log book up
to date, including false alarm entries. The
evacuation arrangements and warnings will
have been determined from the building’s fire
risk assessment.
Evacuation arrangements and
warnings
In some cases, a general evacuation warning
may be inappropriate and a delayed or staged
evacuation, perhaps by floor or defined area,
may be adopted. In places where a general
audible alarm is not thought immediately
desirable (such as hospitals, department stores
and places of entertainment), the alarm may be
transmitted to a permanently staffed control
point or discretely to pagers held by key staff
where trained people can assess the warning
required and then pass on the instruction to
staff or the control room as appropriate.
In taller commercial buildings, which have
been designed with reduced stair capacity, the
evacuation signal may be ‘phased’. This requires
the fire alarm system to give a clear message to
individual floors in sequence, to avoid
overloading the staircases. A voice message
system is the preferred arrangement in such
cases, as an ordinary sounder tone may ‘bleed’
into additional areas causing confusion as to
when to evacuate.
Maintenance
BS 5839-1 provides the current guidelines for a
servicing and maintenance regime of automatic
fire detection and alarm systems, which has
been in place since the 2002 edition. Many
organisations continue to service systems to the
previous guidelines which do not guarantee
compliance with the current standard.
A maintenance regime may include the
following:
• Weekly test
• Monthly user requirements (where
generators are used as a form of standby power)
• Quarterly inspection of vented batteries
• Periodic inspection and test of the system
(not exceeding 6 months)
• Annual service (which may be undertaken
across two six monthly services (or any other
pattern) that assures not more than 12 months
passes since any device receives attention)
rooms with just a single device
All buildings deserve
the latest fire
evacuation
technology, all fire
alarm systems should
be able to be
upgraded and
everyone deserves to
feel safe and secure
he Sonos Pulse range of EN54-23 compliant
Tbeacons and sounder beacons are
designed to ensure that all personnel are
notified of fire emergencies, including people
with sensory impairments or working in sensory
depriving conditions. Featuring Pulse Alert
Technology, Klaxon’s EN54-23 compliant
beacons help buildings to be evacuated quicker,
make evacuation requirements clear and
unambiguous, and allow personnel to feel safe
and secure.
Relying on audible fire alarm notification
alone disadvantages people with hearing
impairments or those working, or living, in
sound reducing conditions. Even something as
simple as wearing a pair of headphones could
prevent someone from hearing an audible fire
evacuation warning. To truly evacuate everyone
from a building, fire systems need to signal
effectively using light as well as sound.
EN54-23 specifies the minimum performance
requirements for Visual Alarm Devices (VADs)
and Klaxon’s Sonos Pulse beacons produce a
light output that can protect most rooms with
just a single device. Optical systems disperse
light evenly, ensuring the most efficient
distribution of light to maximise effectiveness.
Klaxon’s Pulse Alert Technology provides all the
benefits an EN54-23 compliant system can
bring, whilst answering all of the design
challenges in doing so.
Featuring the latest high power LED
technology, Pulse Alert Technology contains
advance LED drive circuitry, further improving
efficiency, light output performance and long
term device reliability. Sonos Pulse LED circuits
are designed to exceed 5 years continual
operation, without degradation of light output.
Klaxon believes that all buildings deserve the
latest fire evacuation technology, that all fire
alarm systems should be able to be upgraded
and that everyone deserves to feel safe and
secure.
Installation
EN54-23 specifies three different classification categories for Visual Alarm Devices: Wall, Ceiling and Open. Wall and Ceiling mount
categories are specified at designated mounting heights and particular coverage pattern areas, as detailed by EN54-23. Open
classification allows the manufacturer to specify the coverage volume and coverage shape, and does not restrict mounting height.
Pulse Alert Technology has been designed to exceed the requirements of both Wall and Ceiling classifications, providing system
designers with simple of device performance specifications.
Wall Classification
Wall mounted devices provide a rectangular prism of light.
Wall classification devices with Pulse Alert Technology can be
mounted up to 3.1m in height and cover an 11.3m x 11.3m area.
Ceiling Classification
Ceiling mounted devices provide a cylinder of light. Ceiling
classification devices with Pulse Alert Technology can be
mounted up to 3m in height and cover a 15m diameter area.
FIRE SAFETY
Fire safety management... the future is virtual
Taktis Fire is an all-new
range of fire detection
control equipment
alse alarm callouts are
Fextremely costly in terms of
time, money, and disruption to
occupiers, and not least to fire
alarm maintenance and service
providers. In 2015/16 they made up
nearly 40% of all the incidents
attended by fire and rescue services
in England and Wales. They can be
costly to businesses and to the fire
and rescue services too, with
around £1 billion being wasted on
them each year in the UK. Yet, many of these
problems could be efficiently minimized by
remote diagnostics that fully exploit the power
of the Internet and mobile communications,
allowing predictive monitoring and servicing by
fire alarm maintenance and service providers
spotting potential problems before they arise.
Fresh perspectives reap
significant benefits
The team leader of a recent five-year project,
who pioneered remote troubleshooting
techniques for system monitoring and
diagnostics that generated over £2m savings a
year, says: 'It's a change in mentality, because
we can now pull up all the information and
interrogate problems, without ever having to
leave the building.' This innovative remote
overview of systems resulted in a 75 percent
reduction in diagnostic time and considerable
savings in service and maintenance costs.
Virtual overview of building
services
The potential for Fire Safety solutions being
integrated with building systems management
and maintenance is immense. Its purpose is to
control, monitor and optimize building services
whose scope you encounter every working day:
Lighting; Heating; Security, CCTV and Alarm
systems; Access Control; Audio-Visual and
Entertainment systems; Ventilation, Filtration
and Climate control, etc.; even Time &
Attendance control and reporting (notably staff
attendance, movement and availability).
And it is this potential for integrating Fire
Safety System design and Building Management
that has driven the latest development in Life
Safety System Management; Kentec's leading
edge Taktis fire safety technology that is already
exciting fire professionals, building systems and
facility managers.
Powerful and sophisticated, yet simple to use
and understand, this entirely new management
platform combines the very latest hardware and
software to produce a control and indication
system that's designed to add value to System
Designer, Integrator, Service provider and the
end user.
Using today's most advanced technology,
this revolutionary platform brings a greater
flexibility to allow users to reconfigure a system
with ease to realize many control and indication
applications, with future direct integration into
'intelligent' buildings.
Seamless integration and interconnectivity
Taktis Vision - Taktis Vision provides a means of allowing full display and optional control of the
Taktis fire alarm control panel from a small and unobtrusive local control station. Based on an all
new hardware and software platform, the large, full colour graphical display with touch screen
functionality, delivers information on the status of the fire alarm system to single or multiple
locations.
Taktis Virtual Resource - There’s more to come with Virtual Resource suite of software tools,
which will be able to deliver a whole new dimension in Life Safety System Management, giving
System Designers, Integrators and Service Companies the ability to remotely access and
comprehensively manage any system using intelligent analysis of data collected from those
systems. End-users and Facilities managers will also greatly benefit from the powerful application-based tool set featured by Virtual Resource.
Scaleable, future-proofed solution - Taktis fire systems are scalable with Taktis Net Enhanced High Speed Networking. This allows up to 128
panels to be connected together as a fully fault tolerant networked system with rapid inter panel communications and up to 1.2km of standard two
core fire resistant cabling between nodes. Each panel can be configured to display all or any events from any other panel allowing master/slave,
multiple master/slave or peer-to-peer configuration.
Sophisticated network analysis tools provide the ability to identify connection problems instantly and the commissioning mode allows individual
panels to be prevented from transmitting events to the network while maintaining communications. www.kentec.co.uk
FIRE SAFETY
Making installation less risky
Aston Bowles,
marketing manager at
fire systems leader
Advanced, discusses
what installers and
end users should look
for when considering
performance and cost
of installation &
ownership
pecifying a fire system can be a
Scomplicated task, but the hardware itself is
often a small part of the overall cost.
Saving time on installation becomes important
because a lower lifetime cost of ownership,
allows more to be invested up-front in better
quality, future-proofed systems. Advanced
systems deliver a raft of features that make
installation easier and more economical.
Architecture
System architecture can have a big impact on
installation time and cabling costs. Addressable
systems allow many devices to be connected on
one loop instead of ‘pulling in’ many individual
radial circuits, as in conventional systems, and
detection devices, sounders, and VADs etc, can
be connected on the same loop circuits. Built-in
short circuit isolators also ensure that these
systems continue to operate in the event of a
wiring fault.
Device choice can make installation simpler.
Modern wireless detection and loop devices
allow the fire system to quickly and easily go
where it was difficult or impossible previously.
Such systems can be stand-alone or more often,
hybrid, working as part of a wired system.
Panels should cater for design changes, as
the building in practice may differ from that on
the drawings. It’s important to allow sufficient
spare capacity for future expansion as well and
equipment should ideally be backwards
compatible.
Software
Modern fire alarm panels are computers, and
can require detailed cause-and-effect
System Tools
Once the boxes are on the wall and cables run, the priority is to have a working
fire system as soon as possible. Loop devices can be addressed manually or via
handheld programmers and the panel autolearn feature can quickly find and
record them. This radically reduces configuration time and aids fault-finding.
Fire systems can be complicated and it is rare, no matter how skilled the
installers, that they are perfect first time. Advanced offers a unique ‘built-in’
oscilloscope & meters and other diagnostic tools, that help identify any cable
faults or missing devices. Such features save engineers having to take
expensive equipment to site, and also display information exactly as
interpreted by the panel whilst avoiding having to isolate and disconnect wiring
from the panel.
programming. The options can be huge and are
multiplied on multi-panel networks
As such it’s important the system software
allows cause-and-effect to be set up simply and
quickly. Software is one of the areas of real
choice in systems and the right choice saves
time and money at installation and later during
maintenance. For example, can programming be
done off-site and uploaded and tested when
required?
On larger networked systems, each panel can
be commissioned independently even without
all panels being interconnected. Software can
be used to simulate a network of panels and
loops of devices, to aid testing and identify any
problems at an early stage before final upload
and verification testing.
Service and configuration tools provide
detailed and accurate reports for O&M manuals
and can confirm the system has been fully
tested along with providing detailed
configuration etc. Advanced’s service tool can
be used over the lifetime of the system to
schedule regular maintenance of equipment and
even identify when devices need cleaning or
replacing.
Remote diagnostics tools, via IP, LAN or other
connection technology, allow the system to be
continually monitored off-site during soak
testing. Any problems can be identified before
an engineer attends site ensuring he has all the
necessary tools and equipment when he does
arrive. Also, adding detailed false alarm
management, touchscreen graphics and BMS
integration at later stage is simple if the right
system is chosen, simplifying installation and
managing cash flow on large projects.
Support
Just one unplanned return to site will eat in to
profits, so reliable and quality equipment and
technical support is a must. EN54 Part 13 is a
reliable badge of system performance and
integrity and is worth looking for.
Modern fire panels can make installation
simpler, build trust between integrators and fire
and building managers and essentially make for
better, more profitable business relationships,
that deliver safer environments for everyone.
TRAINING
Sound the alarm on training
A recent report
indicates that the life
safety industry must
do more when it
comes to training the
next generation
cross the built environment, the skills gap
Ahas been a growing concern for many
years. While skilled bricklayers and
carpenters have been in short supply for a long
time, the issue is now bleeding into other key
trades across the construction sector, including
our own. Recent figures from the Federation of
Master Builders (FMB), for example, suggest
that the shortage of electricians - including life
safety installers - is at its highest point in four
years.
This lack of skilled life safety installers and
other construction professionals doesn’t just
present a challenge for companies seeking to
complete projects on deadline today, it poses a
risk to the construction industry’s growth in the
future. As older workers retire, it means that
there will be fewer people available with the
skills required to install systems, placing severe
restraints on organisations’ ability to meet
customer demand.
Despite this looming shortage, it seems that
many life safety installers believe our sector
isn’t doing enough to address the skills gap,
according to new research from Hochiki Europe.
Unless we do all we can as an industry to
address this issue now, the implications for our
future - and that of the wider construction sector
- will be severe.
The study found that most, if not all, fire
safety and emergency lighting installers think
that the industry still has a long way to go when
it comes to adequately addressing the skills
gap. As many as 95 per cent of respondents
think the sector isn’t doing enough to provide
training for the next generation of professionals.
Only two fifths (39 per cent) said they work
for a company that offers an apprenticeship
programme, while 17 per cent - fewer than one
in five - reported that their employer offers a
graduate programme to attract university
leavers to the industry.
“The lack of training opportunities for young
talent wasn’t the only issue highlighted in the
study by installers,” revealed Tracy Kirk, General
Manager of Sales and Marketing, Hochiki
Europe. “Many felt that another major cause for
concern was the lack of enthusiasm among
school leavers for the life safety sector as a
potential career.”
Around four in five (78 per cent) respondents
felt that young people - particularly those from
family backgrounds outside the construction
industry - don’t know what jobs are available in
the life safety sector. A further two thirds (68
per cent) worried that young people don’t view
the industry as an employment option. This not
only has implications for the current skills
shortage, but can also impact on the diversity of
the next generation of installers, leading to few
women and people from ethnic minorities
seeing the sector as offering them a fulfilling
future career.
With this in mind, it is no surprise that 93 per
cent of respondents said that the sector had a
responsibility to educate secondary school
pupils on the range of life safety roles on offer
to combat such issues.
(continued over)
The study found that
most, if not all, fire
safety and emergency
lighting installers
think that the industry
still has a long way to
go when it comes to
adequately
addressing the skills
gap
TRAINING
“If the industry is to
grow in the future,
manufacturers and
installers need to take
action now to create
the training
opportunities
necessary”
(continued from previous page)
“The results of the survey make for difficult
reading for everyone in the life safety sector
showing, as they do, that the industry is doing
too little to address the growing fire safety skills
gap,” says Tracy. “If the industry is to grow in
the future, manufacturers and installers need to
take action now to create the training
opportunities necessary to equip the next
generation with the knowledge and expertise
they need to build a satisfying career as life
safety professionals.”
However, as the survey shows, it is not
enough to simply devise apprenticeship and
graduate programmes to entice young people
into the sector, no matter how great these may
be. It is essential that the industry as a whole
does more to reach out to students while they
are still at school and thinking about their future
careers, and highlight the benefits of working in
the industry.
By doing this, the sector can take steps to
appeal to more than just pupils who may
already be interested in jobs in the built
environment - whose parents, for example, are
construction professionals. It can attract those
from diverse backgrounds too, helping to make
the pool of potential new talent even greater.
Aspiring to be top of the class
Many in the life safety industry have begun
to take steps to improve training provisions for
budding installers and fire safety professionals.
The Fire Industry Association (FIA), for example,
has recently launched four new qualifications
aimed at equipping people just joining the
industry, as well as existing professionals, with
crucial knowledge on an array of topics, from
product design, to installation and
commissioning, to long-term maintenance.
According to Tracy Kirk both installers and
equipment manufacturers need to do more, not
only to make careers in life safety more
accessible to young people, but to work with
schools, colleges and universities - as well as in
partnership with others in the industry - to
attract as many students as possible to the
industry. “Promoting the array of career options,
and the paths into the sector to as many young
people as possible - regardless of their
background - should be a priority,” she says.
“By doing so, we can all play our role in
ensuring the sector has the skills and new talent
it needs to grow and thrive into the future.”
FIRE SAFETY
The visual advantage
Video smoke detection (VSD) provides the security and fire safety
industry with a way to detect smoke and fire in a very early stage.
Here we look at the benefits of the technology
VSD makes use of CCTV security cameras
and video analytics that are able to
recognise initiating smoke and fire in the
video image. Today, VSD is especially used in
critical infrastructures in order to protect
people, property and production processes. It
technology can prevent serious fire incidents
from happening and thus avoid high costs,
including the cost of fire damage to
infrastructure, of human lives and of production
stops during an alarm phase.
“In certain types of critical environments,
like chemical plants, waste storage bunkers or
production facilities, the impact and the risk of a
fire can be very high. That’s why companies
operating in such environments need to take the
appropriate fire safety measures. However, it is
exactly in those environments that conventional
smoke detection technologies, like beam or
point-type detectors, will fall short,” says Pieter
Claerhout of Araani.
“First of all, conventional smoke detection
systems, like point, beam or aspiration-based
smoke detectors, need to make contact with the
smoke before they can generate an actual
alarm,” he explains. “But in the typical high
buildings of chemical plants, production halls or
storage rooms, the smoke from an initiating fire
www.psimagazine.co.uk
will reach the smoke detector very slowly, too
late or not all, because of a process called
stratification, which stops the upward
movement of smoke.”
A second difficulty with conventional smoke
detectors is that they can be set off
unintentionally by chemicals, dust, exhaust
gases or vapor, creating a high volume of
unwanted alarms. Dust is also one of the
reasons why a conventional smoke detector will
degrade very fast, which will impact its
detection performance.
How does VSD work?
Today’s video smoke detection systems rely on
the resolution and accuracy of a standard
network security camera. Software algorithms
installed on the camera scan the environment
and continuously analyse it in real time to locate
the fire incident. In case of an event, an alarm
output is sent over to the fire control panel. A
video detection system can be connected to a
video management system in order to provide
control room operators with 24/7 situational
awareness.
According to Pieter this approach has a
number of advantages: “Video smoke detection
systems will see initiating smoke much faster
than conventional systems. VSD makes efficient
(continued over)
“Unlike some other
smoke detection
technologies, video
analytics do not need
to make physical
contact with smoke or
dust. They
immediately ‘see’ the
danger when and
where it originates”
65
FIRE SAFETY
Since it is so fast and
allows for visual
verification, VSD
provides the operator
with valuable time to
make a well-founded
decision
(continued from previous page)
use of CCTV so it is able to see dangers at
source, from a very large distance. Unlike some
other smoke detection technologies, video
analytics do not need to make physical contact
with smoke or dust. They immediately ‘see’ the
danger when and where it originates.
“VSD is also very accurate and thus the false
alarm rate will be extremely low. Unwanted
alarms can be very costly. Just think of the time
lost when a production line needs to be stopped
or imagine the cost of an erroneously called
emergency team. Video smoke detection
systems on the other hand will analyse the
video image to make a distinction between
starting smoke and other irregularities, such as
people walking in the field of view, animals,
vehicles or objects.”
Control room operators can monitor the CCTV
video images in real time. This allows them to
assess the nature and severity of the fire as well
as the stage it is in. Based on pre-incident
recording, they can see whether people are
present at the place of the incident and they can
better assess the overall situation. This way,
they can also make better use of their
emergency resources.
When to use VSD
“VSD technology proves its value in
environments where contact-based smoke
detection systems are not efficient, including
high-impact environments, harsh environments,
and buildings with great height,” says Pieter. “In
some environments, such as chemical plants,
even a small fire can cause huge consequential
damage. In these high-risk environments,
conventional smoke detectors would be
useless, because they might only get activated
when the damage is already done. VSD on the
other hand is so fast that it will efficiently
reduce the impact and the risk of a fire
outbreak.”
Video smoke detection is also ideal for use in
tall buildings or large indoor spaces. High or
voluminous buildings of 10m+ have issues with
the stratification of smoke whereby smoke will
not rise high enough or quickly enough to reach
ceiling mounted point or beam detectors. This is
the case for example in aircraft hangars, airport
passenger terminals, factory production halls,
retail areas, museums and historical buildings.
In production facilities, alarms will require
the production lines to be stopped. In harsh
environments, where chemicals, dust or vapor
are present every day, such as chemical plants,
waste recycling plants, wood processing
companies or in the oil and gas industry,
conventional smoke detectors could generate
false alarms. But, because of its visual nature,
video smoke detection will be able to analyse
the above-mentioned phenomena in a more
intelligent way through the use of video
analytics.
Enabling better decisions
“Video smoke detection is a perfect fit for a
wide range of critical environments,” says Pieter
Claerhout. “Because of its visual nature, VSD
can spot initiating fires directly at the source,
practically from any distance. This is a huge
speed advantage compared to smoke detection
technologies that need to make physical contact
with the smoke. With VSD, there is no need to
wait until the smoke has reached the ceiling.
This is time gained for anyone who needs to
make tough decisions about the required
actions that need to be taken to avoid further
fire and smoke damage.”
Unwanted alarm or not, probably the biggest
advantage of video smoke detection technology
is that it gives the operator room for
interpretation. Since it is so fast and allows for
visual verification, VSD provides the operator
with valuable time to make a well-founded
decision. That decision could be calling the
emergency services and avoid further damage
or human suffering. Or it could be ignoring the
alarm and if possible isolating the fire event in
order to prevent the entire operation to close
down and run into costs.
together raising standards
Meet the installer
Do you use a distributor or buy direct from
manufacturers?
We buy fire equipment directly from the
manufacturers. Security equipment we buy from
distributors.
Is third party accreditation beneficial to
your company?
Being NSI Gold and BAFE SP203-1 accredited for
fire alarms and security systems gives our clients
peace of mind that the systems we install comply
will the very latest regulations and standards, all
our systems are backed up with a maintenance
package. Having a qualified engineer perform
maintenance on these systems assists with the
prevention of failure or fault; vital when life safety
systems are installed within a premise.
Having recognised health and safety
certification in place is absolutely vital for
working within the construction industry and
having these in place offers our client reassurance
that we meet all the current regulations.
What would be a typical project for you?
Working on construction projects with our
mechanical and electrical clients installing fire
alarms and security systems within new build
offices, schools, commercial buildings, offices
and high-end London apartments. We also work
with FM companies helping them to deliver
reactive callout, systems maintenance and new
installations for their clients. But our main core
business is within the construction industry.
What would make your job easier?
Although my position can at times be demanding
and stressful I have a really good team, they
listen, learn and achieve. They say a ship is only
as good as its crew and we have really good crew
here most of which have been here for eight,
twelve and 20 years - there’s not many companies
that can say that and in this day and age thats a
real testament to the company.
The company is expanding and if we could only
source the apprentices and engineers we need to
assist us with that growth that would make make
lots of jobs here a lot easier
Do you think there is a skills shortage in
the industry?
Yes I do, we have been actively seeking
apprentices and experienced engineers for quite
some time. There definitely appears to be a
shortage because our search for candidates to fill
these positions is still ongoing.
What is the industry’s biggest myth?
That using a company who can carry out works for
next to nothing is always the better option, it’s
too late to change your mind when the install
looks shocking and the money you saved has to
be used to rectify it.
What will be the impact of smart/home
automation on the security sector?
Not applicable to Network Security and Fire as we
operate within the construction industry.
What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic
security product?
Something with the ability to change appearance
if the client changes their mind and the system
has already been installed would be beneficial.
Will England ever win the football World
Cup again?
Like most I remain optimistic, never say never.
If you won £25,000 what would you do with
it?
I would donate it to charity.
CYBER THREATS
Security and cyber risks
Accepting that our physical systems have become very attractive to
hackers and criminal gangs is the first step to doing something about it.
PSI caught up with Mike Gillespie of Advent IM to discuss the cyber risks
for networked security systems
he growth of networked and web enabled
Tequipment we use is only ever going to
increase and as buildings get smarter and
the need to manage them smartly, more
pronounced, the potential for attack increases.
Understanding the threat is where we need to
start and this has to be through good quality
education, training and knowledge sharing.
Installing equipment securely has to be a
baseline requirement, and explaining best
practice to end users may help them build the
management of those systems into their own
configuration and change management
regimes. More and more facility managers are
finding themselves dealing with IT
professionals and IT security professionals,
owing to the nature of the equipment they are
expected to manage now.
Whilst everyone’s role includes the need to
protect assets and people, the language we use
can sometimes be a big stumbling block. It may
be worth talking to communications teams to
find glossaries or other content that will help in
daily interactions and help to mitigate the risk
from poor communication and the cracks in
security it creates.
It seems you cannot open a security
publication these days without being reminded
of the growing threat from cyberspace. So, our
systems, both information and physical, are
www.psimagazine.co.uk
under attack and how we rise to meet the
growing challenge is a constant source of both
headline and speculation.
The changing nature of the threat and the
sneaky and malicious nature of cyber criminals
means that not only do we need to be certain of
our own next steps, but that we are in step with
our fellow professionals. Collaboration across
disciplines to ensure we are contributing to a
culture of genuine resilience. How this works in
practice is up to individual businesses and
organisations, but the stakes have never been
higher.
• In 2013, the Haifa Tunnel – the main arterial
road into Tel Aviv was shut down after its
camera surveillance system was attacked. The
shutdown lasted over eight hours and caused
chaos that lasted for days. It had been noted
that in June of the same year, areas of Israeli
critical national infrastructure had also been
attacked. The attacks included water, banks,
trains and electricity. These attacks were caught
by efficient monitoring and thwarted before
harm could be done.
• In Washington DC, four days before
President Trump’s inauguration 75% of the
surveillance camera DVR capability was crippled
by two ransomware attacks. This forced the DC
police to rebuild the systems from scratch, a
massive challenge given the timing. (continued over)
Our systems, both
information and
physical, are under
attack and how we
rise to meet the
growing challenge is a
constant source of
both headline and
speculation
69
CYBER THREATS
(continued from previous page)
• But perhaps vying for top ‘audacious’ billing must be the
bank heist case that as yet is not fully solved. In more than 36
countries worldwide, bank CCTV systems were hacked in order to
track movements and behaviour of staff with key accounts, to
enable mimicking of their behaviour on those accounts at a
future date without arousing suspicion. The information gathered
was used as part of a huge heist which saw the attackers create
millions in dollars, add them to targeted accounts (identified via
surveillance cameras as best targets) and then withdrawn in cash
from hacked ATMs into the hands of the gang members. The
gang, named ‘Carbanak’, are yet to be fully discovered and the
investigation – along with the activity, has yet to be completed.
If you think you are not working with systems that this would
happen to, remember that in 2014, literally thousands of
webcams and surveillance cameras were hacked and then livestreamed
across the world. These were things like ‘nannycams’
and home CCTV systems. All were installed insecurely with
default username and password settings, allowing ease of access
to over 76,000 cameras. They could have been in a college,
school or leisure centre, we don’t know the full extent. The
common factor was insecure installation and resulting lack of
management.
Nowadays, if you work in security, you have a cyber security
element to your role, to some degree or another. How successful
you are in that area, will depend on how well trained you are and
how collaborative your approach is. For make no mistake, the
future of successful building management and security systems,
will be all about collaboration.
As we move forward, criminals are creating more sophisticated
malware and recent news from global cyber seminars would
appear indicate that researchers, also known as ‘white hats’,
showcased ransomware (designed to extort the user by
encrypting their systems until a ransom is paid) that is
specifically for physical systems. This means potentially an entire
building, its contents and inhabitants could be held to ransom. If
white hats can write it, you can guarantee that black hats can too.
If we are not on the front foot and prepared for this eventuality,
the potential for harm increases with each new discovery.
If you work in security, you have a cyber security
PANEL
Securing vulnerabilities
After the recent incident with NHS
IT systems, does the industry need
to be concerned about putting
security technology onto networks?
What is the message to those
installers walking around IFSEC
looking at connected systems?
or this month’s PSI panel we asked the
Fexperts to tell us whether the recent global
security incident which brought many IT
systems around the world, including the NHS, to
a standstill should be of concern for installers.
In early May a number of NHS organisations
were affected by a ransomware attack, a cyber
event that asks for money in return for returning
the IT system back to its operational state.
While the WannaCry ransomware wasn’t
specifically targeted at the NHS it did worry
many that an IT system that holds so much
sensitive data could have been put at any kind
of risk at all.
Speaking at the time, David Thorp, executive
www.psimagazine.co.uk
director of the Business Continuity Institute
(BCI) said that “Organisations must have plans
in place to deal with the consequences of such
disruptive events. By putting plans in place to
deal with such events, it means that
organisations are better prepared to manage
through them, lessen the potential impact and
still provide an appropriate level of service for
their customers.”
So given that advice and the fact that for
some time there has been concern about the
widespread use of public networks for security
systems so does the recent news have any
resonance for the security industry and what
can installers do to secure networked
technology?
Wassim Makhlouf - Vanderbilt
Wannacry differs from most ransomware attacks
in that once it has been triggered on an initial
device, it can propagate itself to any other
vulnerable machine on the LAN. The initial
triggering happens when a user on the LAN,
using a PC that is not adequately protected with
(continued over)
“Most installers could
not have prevented the
attack affecting NVRs
and DVRs on a client’s
network except by
working with the
IT administrator to
pre-empt the initial
triggering of such an
attack”
PANEL
IT network is only as
secure single device
that is connected to it”
(from previous page)
antivirus software, opens an infected
attachment to an email. In April, Microsoft
issued a security update that eliminates the
vulnerability.
Many security devices are vulnerable to this
ransomware, and to other similar attacks, if the
operating system in the device is a version of
Windows. It is very common for NVRs and DVRs
to use a Windows operating system. Neither the
installer nor the IT administrator for the network
can update these operating systems without the
provision of an update to the device by the
manufacturer. Most security product
manufacturers are now issuing such updates,
but typically do this infrequently on their own
schedule and not triggered by Microsoft’s
releasing of an update.
Thus, most installers could not have
prevented the attack affecting NVRs and DVRs
on a client’s network except by working with the
IT administrator to pre-empt the initial
triggering of such an attack. The IT admin
should be urged to:
• Ensure that any other Windows machine on
the same LAN as the security devices is always
fully updated and patched. Also, insure that
effective antivirus software is installed on all
such machines.
• Teach any users of Windows machines on
the same LAN to exercise caution with
attachments to email.
• Close all unused ports through the
configuration of all routers on the network and
through configuration of the firewalls on the
PCs. Even if an initial triggering of Wannacry
occurs, it cannot propagate if port 445 is closed.
Mike Reddington - Videcon
As technology continues to develop and the use
of the WEB and IT networks expands across
many different product platforms it is inevitable
that the security of these product platforms
grow in importance.
The reality is that any IT network is only as
secure as the least secure single device that is
connected to it. With the increase of usage of IP
products (NVRs and cameras) that are
connected on to these type of networks then
they are exposed to potential cyber-attacks and
used as a gateway on to a company's IT
network.
This has been a growing risk that we at
Videcon recognised many months ago and we
took the decision to further invest in our product
development to increase the cyber security of
our products. As a result of this investment we
have introduced Sequrinet with Enhanced
Password Control (EPC) across all our IP and
AHD NVRs and DVRs.
Sequrinet with EPC prohibits the use of
simplistic, easily infiltrated passwords and only
allows the use of passwords that feature a
combination of numbers, lower case letters,
upper case letters and symbols that are over five
characters long. Enhanced Password Control
(EPC) will also remove the use of drop down
user name profiles. Upon selection, EPC will
remove any backdoor user capability and will
disable P2P and DDNS options by default. The
result of this is a significant increase in the
cyber security of the CCTV system connected to
a network. This significantly mitigates the risk of
a company's IT network being hacked via the
CCTV system. This makes Videcon's products
one of the most secure network products
available in the market today and is ideal for
organisations requiring a stringent level of
password protection in sectors such as
Government, Banks and NHS.
So our advice to installers is to seriously
consider the cyber security risk for your
customer and only select a CCTV network
product platform that provides protection
against this potential risk like the Videcon
'Concept Pro' range of products.
Improving security for a
national vape shop chain
Delta Security has installed a remotelymonitored
intruder alarm and access control
solution to protect customers and staff at three
new London stores of the e-cigarette and vape
brand, Cigara.
The system features Honeywell Galaxy alarm
panels which integrate with an access control
system using secure (i.e. non-cloneable) fobs.
A Cigara spokesperson said: “We wanted the
same system as we have in our other 15 outlets,
because we know it works well. Delta had an
excellent knowledge of the products and was
able to install on time, and to budget. Four days
before one store was due to open, an issue arose
with the lock for our electric roller shutters. A
number of other security firms informed me it
would take two weeks to fix, but Delta came up
with an alternative solution that resolved the
Cameras on the lookout for
early signs of forest fires
Bosch cameras are keeping a watchful eye above
the canopy of Poland’s Czarne forests looking for
the first signs of fire.
Once a forest fire strikes, timing is vital to bring it
under control. Unfortunately, such blazes are
usually only detected once they have already spread
over a large area. To ensure the timely detection of
smoke, the forest inspectorate of Poland’s densely
forested Czarne Czluchowskie district turned to
Bosch for an IP camera-based solution.
With full 360° rotation pan and 290° tilt control,
two Bosch MIC IP 7000 cameras were all that was
required to cover the district’s entire 25,000
hectares of forest for signs of fire. Both cameras
display images in conjunction with coordinates.
Once smoke is spotted by surveillance staff, a 30x
optical zoom lens enables confirmation of a fire.
This ensures a timely response to a blaze, thus
greatly limiting damage.
The camera units, mounted on 60-meter-high fire
masts, provide full awareness even in the most
extreme weather conditions, and thanks to rugged
housing can operate in temperatures as low as -
problem in just two days.”
The intruder alarm is monitored 24/7 by
Custodian Monitoring Services from its alarm
receiving centre (ARC) in Nottingham.
40°C or as high as +60°C. With a High Dynamic
Range (HDR) of 120 dB, the cameras can provide
images of both bright and dark areas. High winds
are particularly challenging and can distort images,
however the Bosch MIC IP 7000 camera
incorporates an image stabilisation algorithm,
which ensures reliable images, and is engineered to
withstand high-impact or continuous low-frequency
vibration.
Outdoor PIR operates without false alarms
Optex has worked with Amron Security to protect
an isolated residential property in a rural location
in the West Midlands. Exposed on all four sides by
main roads and fields, the owner was concerned
that the property, including detached garages,
would be a vulnerable target for intruders.
Paul Bishop, Contracts Manager and Senior
Installer at Amron Security, was at first sceptical
at using wireless PIRs: “As an installer I feel more
comfortable using outdoor sensors only when
alarms can be visually verified remotely, as it is far
from ideal for false or nuisance alarms to trigger
with no possibility for verification,” he says. “However, I haven’t
experienced any false alarm problems with the outdoor PIRs, which
have performed flawlessly.”
The PIRs specified for the job include five of VXI-R and two FTN-R
sensors. They are both battery-operated outdoor detectors that
wirelessly connect to a Ricochet-enabled alarm panel via Optex’s
Ricochet-enabled wireless transmitter, the BGR-01, which is fitted into
the back of each sensor.
The VXI-R sensors have a 12m wide angle of detection, while the
FTN-R sensors provide a shorter – up to 5m – detection range in a
curtain-like pattern. Combining the two variants therefore provides
the optimum defence.
Amron Security maintains the sensors and provides a remote
monitoring service; it is automatically informed if an alarm occurs.
“Since the installation in 2016 there has not been a single false
alarm,” Paul adds. “The technology has performed to such a high
standard that my PIR concerns have been mitigated. My concerns
over battery life have also been dispelled, since it is now more than 18
months since the first detectors were installed and they continue to
work without interruption.”
Fire system boosts protection of Liverpool
University student accomodation
Eaton has delivered a fire alarm system to protect students at a
university accommodation development in Liverpool. The company
supported EFT Systems in providing equipment for Ablett House,
named after the late Liverpool and Everton footballer Gary Ablett.
Completed in a year, the bespoke 12-storey, 396-bed building
has been designed to provide students in Liverpool with a relaxing
environment in which to live, study and unwind. The
accommodation offers students a choice of three to seven-bed
apartments.
Mindful of the disruption and cost implications that arise from
frequent false alarms in student accommodation, The Student
Housing Company specified a bespoke fire alarm solution with a
range of cause-and-effect programming to ensure fast and accurate
detection of a suspected fire.
“Students often fall foul of the fire alarm system due to creating
nuisance or unwanted alarms. It is a challenging environment for
fire systems but the Eaton system has performed flawlessly,” said
Alasdair Croft, EFT System’s Project Manager.
“What was unique about Ablett House was that it presented a
very complicated cause and effect scenario. We had confidence in
the product and received on-site training from Eaton to help us with
the programming.”
In order to meet the project’s detection and alarm requirements,
EFT installed four of Eaton’s CF3000 addressable control panels
throughout the student accommodation.
Mike Slater, sales account manager at Eaton said: “The
installation needed to be completed fairly quickly so we provided
design, programming and system support to assist delivery within
the tight timescale.”
Unlike conventional
panels, addressable control
panels can pinpoint the
particular detection device
that has been activated,
thereby speeding up the
process of determining the
source of the outbreak. This is
viewed as being particularly
important in a challenging
environment such as student
accommodation, where false
alarms are common.
To help minimise additional
cost implications for the
owner or manager of a
building, the CF3000 panels
use soft addressing to
decrease installation time and
reduce the potential for error
associated with manual
addressing.
Failover solution keeps hospital's surveillance intact
Surveon has announced that one of the public hospitals in Asia has adopted its Failover solution for
the surveillance application. Distinguished from other mechanisms where the Failover NVR can be
used for Failover purposes only, the Surveon system offers peer function that supports mutual
failover (1-on-1 or multiple to multiple) among NVRs. Without having to set aside spare NVR or
failover licenses, Surveon Failover solutions allow the license of camera to be shared with the
Failover ones, ideal for large applications.
As incidents like patient fights or disputes among the staff, patients and their families often take
place in emergency room, the surveillance videos have become crucial evidences to unveil the truth
during investigation. To prevent the videos from any loss, the hospital has adopted Surveon peer
mode in terms of system architecture of Failover solution to keep every video in safe. Using internal
storage, the peer mode supports mutual failover among two NVR3308. Under normal condition, the
NVRs will record to their own internal storage. When one of the NVRs fails, the other NVR will take
over recording and save the failed NVRs videos to its internal storage.
"Thanks to Surveon’s Failover solutions, the stress on losing videos under unexpected conditions
are greatly released so that our efficiency could be enhanced in surveillance managements." said
the Managing Director of the hospital's surveillance deployment.
Securing the oldest example of
English written law
Chubb Fire & Security has installed a security
intruder alarm system, designed for sensitive
environments, into Rochester Cathedral. This
system will help secure some of the UK’s oldest
and most important artefacts.
First built in 604 AD, Rochester Cathedral in
Kent is the second oldest in England. It is home to
the Textus Roffensis, the oldest example of
English written law, which dates back to the 10th
century and the creation of the English State.
The security tender followed a Heritage Lottery
Fund grant as part of the Cathedral’s ‘Hidden
Treasures Fresh Expressions’ project. In addition
to the restoration of its library and strong room,
the project saw the creation of a secure exhibition
space within the medieval crypt.
“Primarily, the Cathedral is a place of worship,”
says Colin Tolhurst, head verger at Rochester
Cathedral. “We needed a discreet security system
that would be respectful of its religious setting
while also helping us to protect a high-value
exhibition that is extremely important to
England’s heritage and set to attract large visitor
numbers.”
No drilling of the stonework was permitted,
sensors and switches needed to be hidden from
visitors, and the quarter-tonne steel doors and
ornate, leadlight windows required sensitive
design and installation.
Following a risk assessment, Chubb installed
the Grade 3 intruder alarm system as well as
pressure switches and sensors on artefacts,
windows and entrances that trigger an alarm if
disturbed.
An access control system was also installed,
enabling staff greater freedom of movement and
creating a more secure environment for visitor
activities.
