shower. After showering, I’d feel really relaxed, perhaps
due to the effects of the alcohol. Then I’d lie on my
bed and read non-fiction books, usually about China’s
history and wars, and I’d drift off to sleep very quickly. It
works for me all the time!”
4. Take naps along the way
YASMINNE CHENG
Travels: One long-haul flight a year
“I’ve never experienced jet lag. I find taking naps along
the way helps. For example, if I’m on a red eye flight
back and I land in Singapore at 6am, I go home and
sleep for two hours and I feel rejuvenated after that.
That’s what I did when I came back from Italy last year.
If you don’t have that much time to sleep, take a little
nap in the taxi home. Even 20 minutes will make you
feel more refreshed!”
6. Keep yourself occupied
ELVIN NG
Travels: Four to six times a year, half of which are longhaul
flights
“I had jet lag when I came back from New York two
years ago. I was very sleepy but I tried not to rest until
it was the correct time to sleep. I simply walked around
and kept myself occupied, instead of lying on the bed.
This made me really sleepy at night and I was able to
adjust back to the correct time zone quickly.”
5. Plug in to soothing music
YA HUI
Travels: Two to
three times a year;
all long-haul flights.
“If I can’t sleep
after a long flight,
I listen to nature
music on Spotify
to calm my soul.
My two favourites
are the ‘Nature
Noise’ and
‘Peaceful Piano’
playlists. You also
have to let your
imagination run
wild. Close your eyes and pretend that you’re at a
faraway place with greenery and sheep running around.
If not, you can imagine you are gazing at stars. Very
soon, you will be able to fall asleep.”
7. Vitamin C-ing is
believing
SONIA CHEW
Travels: Six long-haul flights yearly
“I avoid coffee as much as possible when
I’m flying a lot so as not to mess up my
sleeping pattern! Most of my travels are
work-related, so that gives me the adrenaline
I need. I’m very particular about staying hydrated and
keeping Vitamin C sachets with me at all times to
combat fatigue.”
