buffoonish cross between his

Basterds. The rest of the movie,
however, is on less stable ground:
Is this supposed to be a satire or
a commentary? It’s too jokey to
be serious and too serious to be
funny. Darn confusing.

fearmongering) since Richard
Nixon’s administration.

If La La Land introduced you to
jazz, then follow that up with
this biopic about legendary jazz
trumpeter Chet Baker. Ethan
Hawke gives a mesmerising
performance as the James Dean
of Jazz who attempts a career
comeback in the 1960s after it
was derailed by heroin addiction.
But his volatile relationship
with his actress-girlfriend (Alien:
Covenant’s Carmen Ejogo)
threatens to get in the way.
