OTHER NEW OPENINGS
Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s
Revenge (PG13)
Starring Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Geoffrey Rush | Directed by
Joachim Rønning & Espen Sandberg
Johnny Depp still amuses as bumbling buccaneer
Jack Sparrow. Sometimes he’s like a distant uncle
dropping in on a family reunion, drunkenly regaling
everyone with his exploits; other times, it feels like
he’s parodying himself. Not sure which is which. While
the earlier entries were long and meandering, this fifth
(and final?) chapter — about the search for Poseidon’s
trident — is leaner, brisker and more focused. Loyalists
will appreciate the return of other familiar faces (hello,
Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Jack the Monkey!) and
Javier Bardem’s titular maritime menace. The latter, with
his eerily floating hair, rotting face and dripping black
goo, is the series’ best villain ever.
Wonder Woman (TBA)
Starring Gal Gadot, Chris Pine | Directed by Patty Jenkins
We’ve seen the Amazon Princess’ solo movie
but we are forbidden to say anything about it,
thanks to an embargo. All we can reveal is that
there isn’t any post-credits sequence… or is
there?
31 (R21)
Starring Malcolm McDowell, Richard Brake, Meg Foster | Directed
by Rob Zombie
Rocker-turned-horror auteur Rob Zombie (The Devil’s
Rejects) doesn’t do movies that are sane or safe, and
his latest is no exception. 31 is a relentlessly grotty
and gory mayhem-thon set in the 1970s where a bunch
of kidnapped carnival workers — including Zombie’s
real-life missus Sheri Moon — are forced to partake in
a Battle Royale-meets-The Purge gladiatorial game, while
the rich and bored (dressed in 17th century aristocratic
garb, perukes and all) wager on which player will make it
out in 12 hours against a line-up of homicidal maniacs.
Once the end credits roll, you can’t wait to rush home
for a shower. That, or to get a Tetanus jab.
If you can’t get enough of maritime outlaws,
here’s one set in the 16th century about the
battle between the Chinese army and Japanese
buccaneers along the Chinese coastline. No
Krakens involved.
