High school graduation for my first
born is behind me.
Being the first, I wasn’t sure what
to expect. Attending various parties for his
classmates in the two
weeks leading up to
commencement was
lots of fun.
I enjoyed seeing the
pictures and remembering
them at those
ages and stages. It
was fun to visit with
parents that we’ve
sat side-by-side on
bleachers with dozens
of times over the years
and reminisce about
MYRNA
WAGNER
how quickly the time has passed. There
were a few emotional moms, but for the
most part, all was joy and celebration.
I attended baccalaureate the week prior to
graduation without emotion, though it was
a very meaningful and appropriate message
for these young adults.
The worship service at our home church
the morning of commencement didn’t go
so well. Perhaps I wasn’t prepared for the
emotion? Or perhaps it was the first moment
I’d relaxed in the past 72 hours? But
as the three young men wearing their gowns
sat down in the pew ahead of us, I immediately
felt a tug at my heart. It progressively
got worse as pastor spoke individually to
each of them. Then he had them stay up
front for the children’s message just as they
had done what felt like only a few short
years before. My eyes were wet for the rest of
the service.
When we got to the high school for commencement
I feared the worst. Fortunately,
that wasn’t the case. It was an hour filled
Iowa with Information
PUBLISHERS AND joy PRINTERS and celebration, and the tissue I’d
so carefully packed in my purse went unused.
Bad Authority kicks off summer of concerts at Boji Bay
Boji Bay Legacy Park will see its
fair share of musical talent this
summer.
Starting things off — and also wrapping
things up — will be Bad Authority.
The Carroll-based rock band will
set the stage for the summer with
Okoboji Bike Rally Preview Night
on Friday, June 9. Doors open at 6
p.m., and the concert is being called a
“preview night,” because Bad Authority
will also open up for Great White
during the final show of the summer
on Friday, August 18.
According to their website, Bad
Authority is influenced by legendary
rockers like KISS, Led Zeppelin, Dokken,
Iron Maiden, Mötley Crüe and
many more.
The group was founded in 2012 and
includes guitarist Kyler Brinker, drummer
Ted Ramaekers and bassist Miles
Millard.
They got their first break in 2014,
winning the first annual Iowa Rock N’
Roll Music Association’s Battle of the
Bands.
As a result of their win, they had the
opportunity to record at Catamount
Studios in Cedar Falls, releasing a selftitled
EP of original songs in 2015.
Opportunities continued to roll
their way as they’ve taken the stage
all around the state, sharing the stage
with such notable names as Steve
Miller Band, Ted Nugent and Badlands
House Band.
They have also put in work on a
new album that should be ready in
time for concert-goers at Boji Bay.
That concert, presented by Okoboji
Tourism/Vacation Okoboji, Carpet
One, Principal Financial and Okoboji
Harley-Davidson, will provide a great
introduction to a summer of rock and
roll at Boji Bay Legacy Park in Milford.
Summer is almost here.
The season basically is synonymous
with the sounds of live
music echoing across the waters of the
Iowa Great Lakes.
Emanating from Arnolds Park
Amusement Park once again will be
the music of several bands and solo
acts entertaining summer crowds at
Preservation Plaza during the Live at
the Lake concert series.
This year’s lineup boasts 17 performers,
including returning acts such
as Paisan, Farm Rock Band and Kory &
the Fireflies.
Kicking off the season will be Jacob
Martin, who will perform at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, June 10. The show is sponsored
by Okoboji GM Toyota and
Okoboji Tourism.
The country artist hails from rural
Sioux City, and he was inspired to
pursue the genre at an early age when
he first heard the sounds of artists like
Garth Brooks and Sawyer Brown.
His inspiration was further motivated
by his mother, who taught him to
play guitar to accompany his passion
for singing.
At the age of 8, Martin was diagnosed
with Guillain-Barre Syndrome
— a rare disorder in which your
body’s immune system attacks your
nerves — which paralyzed him from
the waist down. He spent his time
focusing on developing his craft as a
singer-songwriter.
During his early 20s, he was persuaded
to move to larger cities, such
as Chicago and Minneapolis, to work
on various music projects. While
living in the Twin Cities, he heard
country and rock fusing together on
popular radio, and he decided to go
back to his roots to put a modern
country band together.
Martin found his drummer, Josh
Carlson, on Craigslist.
Following the duo’s first album release,
the booming musical landscape
of Nashville beckoned.
There, they again added two more
members from Craigslist — lead guitarist
Jeff Coggins and bass guitarist
Mike Guy.
He now is focusing on writing and
recording a modern country sound
that will “stand out on its own” and
be something for “new country listeners”
with Eric Bass, bass guitarist for
the multi-platinum rock band Shinedown.
Martin’s plan is to continue to follow
Garth Brook’s mantra, “With the
good Lord as my captain, making
music for many more years to come.”
Emerging Artist displays work
at Pearson Lakes Art Center
Up Next
Opening June 15 in the Weaver
and McIlrath Galleries will be
“50+ Years of Making Fiber Art,”
featuring the work of Timothy J.
Arand-McIlrath.
Fiber art has been Timothy’s
artistic expression for most of his
life. Color, texture and the “feel” of
fabric has always been important
to him. He began his creative exploration
using photographic images
and repeat pattern to screen
print textiles. Feeling the need for
more dimensional work led him to
feltmaking. Soon this led him to
building forms and inhabiting the
forms with crocheted webs and
eventually incorporating found
objects. Over the last 50 years, he
has had an incredible “love affair”
with fiber and fabric and will continue
creating new artwork as long
as possible.
Light. Color. Composition. All
are key elements in the production
of art, whether it’s drawing,
painting, photography or any other
medium.
For Linda Hopkins, one element
rises above the rest and drives her new
show at the Pearson Lakes Art Center
in Okoboji.
“It’s All About the Light: Paintings
by Linda Hopkins” will be up in the
Wikert Gallery for Emerging Artists
from now through June 24.
The pieces are done in acrylic and
feature a variety of subject matter
from portraits to still lifes featuring
flowers and sailboats.
“This exhibit shows her wide range
of work and captures her interest in
light and how it plays off her subjects,”
said Danielle Clouse-Gast,
visual arts director at the Pearson
Lakes Art Center. “The viewers will see
that and her very colorful work and a
variety of subjects.”
Hopkins, 77, has been painting for
a long time and actually has taken
classes at the art center since its early
days in a red shack in the 1970s. In
1997, she and her husband moved to
the lakes area full time, and her painting
really began to take off.
“When my husband retired it became
kind of an obsession,” Hopkins
said.
About eight-10 years ago, Hopkins
made the switch from watercolor to
acrylic, which makes up her work
in the exhibit. The exhibit includes
pieces mostly from the past couple
years.
“I switched to acrylic because I love
that you can keep painting over and
over it,” Hopkins said. “It’s a fantastic
thing. I like the freedom, and I love
doing the flowers, still life and the
portraits, especially the one of my
husband.”
Hopkins cited such major artists as
Cezanne, Degas and Picasso as major
influences, as well as the late American
abstract artist Joan Mitchell. She
has also studied with artist Francesco
Agresti in Venice, FL, where she lives
half the year.
“Francesco has been an enormous
inspiration, and Joan Mitchell is also
so inspiring,” she said. “I also think if
you want to learn, you’ve got to learn
from the masters.”
She hopes when people visit the exhibit
they feel good and feel inspired.
“I received the Emerging Artist
Award at Art in the Park last year, and
it went to a high schooler the year
before, so I’d want people to know it’s
never too late to start, stop or change
direction,” Hopkins said.
It’s a notion that Clouse-Gast was
quick to back up.
“There is not a start or end date for
making and creating art,” Clouse-Gast
said. “It’s exciting no matter what your
age is to have the chance to show and
sell your work. That never gets old.” F
Let the flags fly
Spencer is set once again for a funfilled,
family-friendly weekend
with its annual summer celebration,
Flagfest.
A variety of activities will greet visitors
and residents of all ages Friday-
Sunday, June 9-11.
“Spencer is the ‘Flag City of Iowa,’
and Flagfest has quite a bit of history
in the community going back to
1984,” said Becky Fear-Hatting, program
director for the Spencer Chamber
of Commerce.
Some events have been moved
around, but all the traditional ones
are back.
The annual movie in the park sponsored
by the Spencer Jaycees is “Sing”
and will be in East Leach Park on Friday
at sunset.
“I haven’t seen it yet, so I’m looking
forward to that one,” Fear-Hatting
said. “I’ve heard it’s a great movie to
take the whole family to.”
Of course, the biggest traditional
event is the parade. The route takes all
the floats, marching bands and more
from the Clay County Fairgrounds
through downtown Spencer, beginning
at 11 a.m Saturday.
Later on that afternoon, there will
be inflatables, concessions and an
80-foot obstacle and rock wall from
the National Guard, all set up at East
Leach Park from 1-5 p.m. Everything
but the food is free throughout the
entire weekend.
“There will be turkey legs and a beverage
called the Purple Cow, which
sounds intriguing to try and of course
all kids of sandwiches,” Fear-Hatting
said. “Hopefully it’s nice and warm
out. It should be a lot of fun.”
Saturday concludes with a traditional
event and something new.
The Grand Cruise is hosted by The
Old Iron Company from 6-11 p.m.
with people bringing their classic
cars to cruise and park up and down
Grand Avenue.
“They line all through downtown,
the side streets, parking lots, cruising
all night. It’s cool to see cars and cars
and cars,” Fear-Hatting said.
Coinciding with the Grand Cruise
will be The Chill, a street dance with
live music.
“This is something new that we
thought would enhance the Grand
Cruise and help make for a great
night,” Fear-Hatting said.
Sunday sees more fun starting with
a fly-in breakfast at the NW Iowa Regional
Airport.
Also Sunday is a free swim at the
Spencer Family Aquatic Center, a cemetery
walk and live racing with Stars &
Stripes Night at the Clay County Fair
Speedway.
“This event is about showing our
patriotism and community spirit,”
Fear-Hatting said.
Enjoy all kinds of fun with the
whole family next weekend at Flagfest
in Spencer. F
Good Ole
Summertime
Sibley holds annual celebration June 10
Sibley is ready for summer.
The Osceola County community of
about 2,700 will host its annual event
commemorating the season, Good Ole Summertime,
on Saturday, June 10.
“It’s a gathering of friends and relatives to
celebrate being together and enjoying summertime
at the park,” said Sheryl Peters,
executive director of the Sibley Chamber of
Commerce.
Good Ole Summertime includes a parade,
carnival games, fire truck rides, water fights,
music, fishing and more.
New this year is a wine tasting, which Peters
said she is excited for.
The ever-popular parade, which typically
has been held in the afternoon in past years
will instead be in the morning this year.
“That will leave more time in the afternoon
for things at the park,” Peters said.
She noted the parade is usually the highlight
of Good Ole Summertime, however, children
also enjoy the pedal tractor pull, which will be
on the east side of Central Park along Eighth
Avenue.
Music from Wailin’ & Willies will provide
entertainment for all ages during the afternoon.
“Just come and listen, bring your lawn chairs
and be part of the fun,” Peters said.
Central Park also will play host to various
food and arts and crafts vendors, a tractor
show, inflatables and more.
During the evening, 1015 Steak House will
host a car show, and the fairgrounds will have
Figure 8 races.
Another new event, Party by the Pit, will feature
music by Judd Hoos and raise money for
Sibley’s swimming pool.
Good Ole Summertime offers basic family
fun that locals look forward to year after year.
Not only do Sibley residents attend the
event, but the celebration also draws in people
from throughout the region. Peters estimated
about 500-700 people attend the festival each
year.
“Just come out to meet your friends and support
the town,” she said. F
History
Marathon to Marathon was
initiated in 1995 by founder Le-
Roy Lind, who passed away before
the first event was held.
The year prior, LeRoy and his
wife, Lois, were given the opportunity
to make suggestions for the
Buena Vista County Sesquicentennial.
LeRoy had been working on the
race since 1983. His vision was to
hold a sanctioned marathon to the
town of Marathon.
His suggestion was happily accepted,
and a race committee was
formed. LeRoy began researching
many different marathons, including
the Boston Marathon, the Duluth
Marathon in Minnesota and the
University of Okoboji Marathon.
Within weeks, registration forms
were returned with entry fees.
During late December of 1995,
LeRoy, Al Pierce and Mike Behrens
decided to get the marathon
sanctioned, which involved having
someone riding the route on a bicycle,
which was fitted with an Orth-
Jones meter.
Lois helped LeRoy organize his
ideas until he passed away in January
of 1996.
Lois continued to be an instrumental
part of the planning and organization
of the event for the next
20 years.
Runners recall her being very
helpful and patient while answering
questions when they called for
information, and she remained an
icon at the finish line, handing out
medals and welcoming runners to
Marathon, until she passed away
on Dec. 9, 2015.
22nd annual race marks last run
The 22nd annual Marathon
to Marathon will be the last.
The 26.2-mile race,
which travels from Storm Lake
to Marathon, was started in
1995 by founder LeRoy Lind,
who passed away before the first
event was held.
This year’s run will depart
from Storm Lake High School,
located at 621 Tornado Drive.
Participants then will embark
on a journey northwest to the
Marathon City Hall at 306 W.
Attica St.
The Heartland USA Classic
race is USA Track and Fieldcertified
and sanctioned and is
a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.
“It’s just one of Iowa’s small
town adventures,” said Bruce
Stone, treasurer for the race.
“We have a group that does the
50 states marathon, and that’s
where we get a lot of our participants.
We don’t have a big payout;
we just give out an award for
winning.”
No matter, 150-250 runners
usually participate, and the
marathon isn’t the only event
offered.
A half-marathon, five-person
relay and 5K run/walk also are
available.
Stone has been involved with
Marathon to Marathon for 21
years, and he plans to participate
in the 5K this year.
“But not as a sprint,” he said.
Stone and his wife, Laurie,
who also doubles as a treasurer
for the race, have a water station
along Highway 10, located near
mile 25 of the race.
“What we enjoy is that by
then, all the serious runners are
around the corner, and those
who are enjoying the race will
stop and visit, and their families
will park along the road,” Bruce
said. “They’ll tell us stories about
them and where they came
from.” F
Kickin’ it in Okoboji
Annual soccer tournament marks 40 years
Soccer is the name of the game
next weekend. The 40th Annual
University of Okoboji Youth
Soccer Classic will take place at Okoboji
High School, beginning with an
opening ceremony and program at 8
a.m. Saturday, June 10.
There are 48 teams registered for the
tournament, comprising more than
700 players in boys and girls U12 and
U14 divisions.
“We have an opening ceremony
with a parade of teams like the Olympics,
which is a lot of fun. It’s free for
the public, and we encourage them
to come watch the action,” said Matt
Richter of The Three Sons.
The tournament consists of Catholic
school teams from the Omaha,
NE, area. University of Okoboji is the
tournament host, while St. James/
Elizabeth Ann is the tournament organizer
setting the game schedule and
handling registrations.
“St. James doesn’t have a tournament
in Omaha, so this one is really
theirs,” Richter said. “It’s a really fun
weekend and great way for a bunch of
families from Omaha to come enjoy
the whole lakes area.”
The action gets started at 9 a.m.
with five fields set up and matches going
on at all times throughout the day.
Spectators also have the option of filling
up on a pancake breakfast hosted
by local Boy Scouts from 8:30-11 a.m.
“We want to send out a huge thanks
to the Okoboji School District for the
use of their facilities,” Richter said.
“That cooperation is one of the keys
to have successful, fun recreational
events here on the beautiful campus
of the Iowa Great Lakes.”
Events like the University of
Okoboji Youth Soccer Classic have
become family traditions spanning
generations. That tradition figures to
continue with the 40th edition of the
tournament.
“Families are enjoying themselves,
and you see second and third generations
bringing their kids back to enjoy
the same experiences they had,” Richter
said. “As the saying goes — The
University of Okoboji, where fun in
life is your degree.”
Fun will be had once again by teams
and spectators enjoying the 40th Annual
University of Okoboji Youth
Soccer Classic. F
DON’T MISS IT! READY TO RIDE
Bull riding and barrel racing. Steer wrestling and mutton bustin’. Everyone’s favorite rodeo events are set
for a fun few days during the annual Cherokee PRCA Rodeo. For more than four decades, Barnes PRCA
(Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association), Cherokee Chamber of Commerce, the Cherokee PRCA Rodeo
Board and several business sponsors have partnered to bring the rodeo to town. This year it will be
no exception as the rodeo runs from Thursday-Saturday, June 1-3 at the Cherokee County Fairgrounds.
CELEBRATE THE ARTS
Supporting the arts. That’s the focus of the Pearson Lakes Art Center’s annual
Celebrate the Arts fundraiser. This year’s event, which has a theme of “The
White Party,” will be held 6-10 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at the Okoboji facility.
“Guests are encouraged to wear their Okoboji summer whites,” said Amanda
Schindler, performing arts director at PLAC.
RUN, WALK, ROLL
It’s time to run. Or walk. Or even roll. The 12th
Annual Village Northwest Unlimited Run Walk
& Roll will be held Saturday, June 3 in Sheldon.
Registration is underway and costs $35 per person.
Packet pick-up is encouraged for the 10K
and 5K participants to be done the Friday before
the race from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Wansink Center
at Village Northwest Unlimited, though there will
be availability the morning before the race. Onemile
walk/wheelchair roll participants can checkin
prior to 7:30 a.m. the morning of the event.
SUMMER CELEBRATION
Summertime only happens once a year, so it’s fitting that the community
of Sioux Center would host a festival commemorating its arrival. The Sioux
County city of about 7,050 will host its 20th annual Sioux Center Summertime
Celebration Thursday-Sunday, June 1-4, giving residents and visitors
the chance to brush off those winter doldrums and step into the sun.
BUFFALO DAYS
Buffalo Days was initiated
with a single event.
Thirty-three years ago,
a local wood-carving
group began hosting
Arts in the Park. “They
were trying to sell some
of their things,” said
Jane Wildung Lanphere,
executive director of
the Luverne Chamber
of Commerce. She said
Jim Viland was credited
with beginning the
event. “Then somebody
else thought of another
good idea, then someone
thought of incorporating
a parade, and
it just grew from there,”
Lanphere said.
This year’s event will
be held June 2-4.
