festival “5 Continents” at the foot of the La Bâtiaz Castle for the great
fireworks display on August 1, in the town’s historic quarter for the arts
and crafts market; at the heart of its vineyards for the Fête de Plan-Cerisier,
at the Valais Fair, at the Amphitheatre for the Cow-Fighting festival, at
the Bourg for the Bacon festival or in the City for the Christmas’ Market.

Geschichtliches um Martigny
Zahlreiche Baudenkmäler zeugen von der vielseitigen Geschichte Martignys.
Bei ihrer Entdeckung kommt man sowohl mit dem 20. Jhd als auch mit dem
Mittelalter oder der Römerzeit in Berührung.
Hier die wichtigen Ereignisse, die das Stadtbild von Martigny durch die Jahrhunderte
geprägt haben :
5. Jhd v. Chr. Der gallische Stamm der « Véragres » gründet
Octodure.
57 v. Chr. Schlacht von Octodure : Die Véragres besiegen
die 12. Römische Legion unter Cäsars Legaten
Servius Galba.
41-47 n. Chr. Die Römer gründen Forum Claudii Vallensium
unweit von Octodure.
Ab dem 12. Jhd Die Stadt heisst von nun an Martigny. Sie ist eine
vom Bistum Sion abhängige Enklave in der von
den Grafen von Savoie kontrollierten Region
Unterwallis. Die Bischöfe von Sion errichten das
Schloss « La Bâtiaz » in den Jahren 1270-1280.
1475 Martigny steht unter dem Joch von Oberwallis.
Es überwiegt die Landwirtschaft, belebt durch
die Messen.
1643-1645 Beginn der Arbeiten an der neuen Pfarrkirche
am Standort der ehemaligen Kirche. Das
Gebäude wird erst 1687 fertiggestellt, weil
lange die nötigen Mittel fehlen.
1800 Durchmarsch von Napoleon Bonaparte und seiner
40’000 Mann starken Reservearmee, auf dem Weg
nach Marengo über den Grossen St.-Bernhard-Pass.
1815 Mit dem Sturz Napoleons I. tritt Wallis der Eidgenossenschaft
bei.
1859 Erstmalige Ankunft einer Eisenbahn der Linie
Simplon-Martigny : Die Aktivitäten verschieben
sich vom Stadtviertel Bourg in die Innenstadt.
Erst 1878 wird der endgültige Bahnhof auf der
Achse der Place Centrale errichtet und nun führt
eine Strasse vom Bahnhof in die Innenstadt.
1896 Ein Postauto zwischen der Stadt und dem
Pass des Grossen St.-Bernhard wird in Betrieb
genommen.
1906 Eröffnung der Eisenbahnlinie Martigny - Châtelard.
1910 Eröffnung der Eisenbahnlinie Martigny - Orsières;
diese wird 1953 durch die Linie Sembrancher -
Le Châble erweitert.
1956 Martigny-Ville fusioniert mit La Bâtiaz.
1960 Begründung des « Comptoir de Martigny », seit
1992 als Foire du Valais bekannte Herbstmesse.
1964 Eröffnung des Tunnels des Grossen St.-Bernhard
1978 Eröffnung der Stiftung Pierre Gianadda (8
Millionen Besucher von 1978-2009)
1981 Die Autobahn erreicht Martigny
1998 Der Stadtpräsident Pascal Couchepin wird Bundesrat,
später Bundespräsident (2003 und 2008).
2009 Martigny empfängt eine Etappe der « Tour de France ».
2011 Das Tepidarium wird mit einem auf dem Parkplatz
der Stiftung Pierre Gianadda eingeweihten
Pavillon zur Geltung gebracht.
2012 Die neue Place Centrale wird eingeweiht.

History of Martigny
Many ancient monuments bear witness to Martigny’s rich history, and anyone
exploring the town will find the 20th century rubbing shoulders with the
Middle Ages and the Roman period. Here are the most important dates that
have marked the development of Martigny throughout the ages :
5th century B.C. The Véragres - a Gallic tribe - found Octodure.
In 57 B.C. Battle of Octodure : the Véragres prevail over the
troops of the 12th Roman legion,
led by Caesar’s ambassador Servio Galba.
Between 41 and 47 A.D. Romans build the Claudium Vallensium Forum
not far from Octodure.
In the 12th century By now, the city is called Martigny. It is a enclave
dependent on the Sion bishop on a Low-Valais
ruled by the Savoie Counts. The bishops of Sion
built the Castle of Bâtiaz between 1270 and
1280.
In 1475 Martigny is now under High-Valais rule. The
economy is based on agriculture and trade fairs.
Between 1643 and 1645 Beginning of construction works for a new
parish church located beside the old one. Due
to the lack of resources, the building was not
finished until 1687.
In 1800 Napoleon Bonaparte marched through Martigny
with his reserve army of 40,000 men on the way
to Marengo, via the Great St. Bernard Pass.
1815 Napoleon abdicates and the Valais enters the
Swiss Confederation.
1859 Inauguration of Simplon railway in Martigny.
The activity of the town moved from Bourg to
City. The definitive station would only be built in
1878, in the Central Square axis, when a road
was also built to link the station with the town.
1896 Launching of a postal bus service between the
town and the Great St. Bernard Pass.
1906 Inauguration of the Martigny-Châtelard railway.
1910 Inauguration of Martigny-Orsières railway. It
will be extended in 1953 with the Sembrancher-
Le Châble railway.
1956 Martigny-Ville merges with La Bâtiaz.
1960 The Martigny Comptoir is created; in 1992, it
became the Valais Fair.
1964 Inauguration of the Great St Bernard Tunnel.
Martigny Bourg merged with the Ville.
1978 Inauguration of the Pierre Gianadda Foundation
(8 million visitors between 1978 and 2009).
1981 The Highway arrives in Martigny.
In 1998 The mayor of the town, Pascal Couchepin,
becomes federal Councillor and then President
of the Swiss Confederation (in 2003 and 2008).
2009 Martigny holds the Tour de France.
2011 The Tepidarium is enhanced thanks to a pavilion
inaugurated in the Pierre Gianadda Foundation
parking space.
2012 Inauguration of new Central Square.

Martigny in der Römerzeit
Bereits zur Zeit der Römer war Martigny ein bedeutendes Handelszentrum.
Von Julius Cäsar als Ort einer Niederlage seiner Truppen 57 v. Chr. beschrieben,
wurde die Stadt unter der Herrschaft von Claudius zum kaiserlichen
Forum und später unter dem Namen Claudii Vallensium zur Hauptstadt der
Penninischen Alpen bekannt. Die durch archäologische Ausgrabungen an
den Tag gebrachten, zahlreichen gallo-römischen Überreste laden Sie ein zu
einer Reise durch die Zeit, auf Entdeckung des gallo-römischen Tempels, des
römischen Amphitheaters, des Domus des Hausgeistes, des Temenos und
des Mithraeums, einziges Mithra gewidmetes und dem Publikum zugängliches
Heiligtum in der Schweiz.
Die Stiftung Pro Octoduro kümmert sich um den Schutz und die Entwicklung
der Ausgrabungsstätte Forum Claudii Vallensium und um die Erhaltung
der gallo-romanischen Funde Martignys.
Seit 2011 erfahren die Überreste des Tepidariums (ein Teil der gallo-
romanischen Thermen) Wertschätzung, Unterkunft und symbolische Vereinigung
in der Stiftung Pierre Gianadda durch einen Säulengang und eine
Wasserfläche.

Roman Martigny
Martigny was known as an important centre for trade during the Roman
period. Described by Julius Caesar as the place where his troops suffered
a defeat in 57 B.C., the town was an imperial forum under Claudius’ rule,
and subsequently became the capital of the Pennine Alps, under the name
of Claudii Vallensium. Its Gallo-Roman remains, uncovered during numerous
archaeological digs, invite you to take a journey back in time and
discover the Gallo-Roman temple, the Roman amphitheatre, the Domus
where the domestic genius was worshipped, as well as the Temenus and
the Mithraeum, the only sanctuaries dedicated to the ancient sun god
Mithras which are open to the public in Switzerland.
The Pro Octoduro Foundation protects and maintains the archeological
site of Claudii Vallensium Forum and maintains the Gallo-Roman ruins of
Martigny.
Since 2011, the Tepidarium remains (a part of Gallo-Roman thermal baths)
have been highlighted, sheltered and symbolically connected to the Pierre
Gianadda Foundation through a colonnade and a water field.

Kulturelle Hauptstadt
Martigny, kulturelle Hauptstadt des Wallis.
Mehr als nur Worte, denn die Kunst ist hier überall : junge Talente oder
bekannte Künstler in zahlreichen Galerien, Skulpturen von Schweizer Künstlern
mitten auf einer Strasseninsel, um eine Strassenecke, römische Kunst
entlang dem archäologischen Spaziergang, zeitgenössische Kunst im Manoir
der Stadt, der Leonardo da Vinci Pavillon mit seiner schönen Retrospektive,
der durch 35 Werke internationaler Künstler wie Mirò, César, Brancusi oder
Henry Moore bevölkerte Skulpturenpark und schliesslich die angesehenen
Ausstellungen der Stiftung Pierre Gianadda, die 2011 die Marke von 8,5
Millionen Besuchern durchbrochen hat.

Martigny, capital of culture.
True to the slogan above, the town indeed has a wealth of art and art
venues: emerging young talents or established artists in the numerous
galleries, sculptures by Swiss artists at the bend of a road, or placed on
roundabouts, Roman art along the archaeological trail, contemporary art
at the Town Manor, the Leonardo da Vinci pavilion and its fascinating
retrospective, the sculpture park with 35 works by international artists
such as Miro, César, Brancusi and Henry Moore, and finally the prestigious
exhibitions of the Pierre Gianadda Foundation, which received over 8,5
million visitors in 2011.

Kunst in der Stadt
Die Stadt Martigny zählt über vierzig Skulpturen, von Rodin bis Henry Moore.
Die Werke von Schweizer Künstlern schmücken die Strasseninseln der Stadt,
während weltberühmte Künstler im Skulpturenpark der Pierre-Gianadda-
Stiftung ihre Werke zeigen.
Von 1947 bis 1949 schuf Edmond Bille für das Rathaus Martignys die grösste
Glaskuppel der Schweiz (55 m²), welche die Geschichte der Stadt schildert.
Aus Freundschaft zu Léonard Gianadda schuf der Schweizer Künstler Hans
Erni Fresken auf den Gebäuden (siehe Stadtplan S. 42) sowie eine Reihe von
Kirchenfenstern für die protestantische Kapelle.
Art in the City
Martigny boasts more than forty sculptures, including works by Rodin and
Henry Moore. The sculptures by Swiss artists grace the town’s streets and
roundabouts, while the works of renowned international artists can be seen
in the sculpture park of the Pierre Gianadda Foundation.
Between 1947 and 1949, Edmond Bille created the biggest window in
Switzerland for the city hall of Martigny; with its 55 mq, it tells the history
of the city.
Thanks to his friendship with Léonard Gianadda, the Swiss artist Hans Enri
could create frescos on the buildings (see guide page 42) and a row of
glass-windows for the Protestant Chapel.

Die Stiftung Pierre Gianadda
Im Frühling 1976 entdeckt der Ingenieur Léonard Gianadda auf einem ihm
gehörenden Grundstück die Überreste eines gallo-römischen Tempels. Er
gründet zur Erinnerung an seinen Bruder, der kurz danach in einem Flugzeugunfall
ums Leben gekommen ist, eine Stiftung.
Heute präsentiert die Fondation jährlich 3 Ausstellungen von Werken aus
Privatsammlungen und den grössten Museen der Welt. Die Gartenanlage
der Fondation lädt zu Spaziergängen durch den Skulpturenpark und ihre
gallo-römischen Überreste ein. Sie zeigt ebenfalls die wichtigsten in Martigny
gemachten archäologischen Funde im Musée Gallo-Romain. Sie beherbergt
ebenfalls die Louis und Evelyn Franck-Sammlung, sowie einen den Erfindungen
Leonardos Da Vinci gewidmeten Pavillon.
Im Untergeschoss der Ausstellung stellt das schönste Automobilmuseum der
Schweiz rund fünfzig antike Fahrzeuge aus, alle in fahrtbereitem Zustand.
Darunter befindet sich auch eine aussergewöhnliche Sammlung von Autos
Schweizer Fabrikats.

The Pierre Gianadda Foundation
In the spring of 1976, the engineer Léonard Gianadda discovered the
remains of a Gallo-Roman temple on a plot of land he owned. He decided
to set up a foundation that would preserve the memory of his brother, who
died in a plane crash shortly after the discovery.
Today, the Foundation stages 3 art exhibitions a year, with works of art
coming from private collections and from the world’s major museums. The
gardens are open for a stroll through the Sculpture Park, and to see the
Gallo-Roman remains. The main archaeological relics discovered during
excavations in Martigny are in exhibition at the Gallo-Roman Museum,
and some fifty vintage cars can be seen in the Automobile Museum. The
Foundation also houses the Louis and Franck Collection, as well as a space
dedicated to the inventions of Leonardo da Vinci.
At the exhibition basement, the most beautiful Swiss museum houses
about fifty ancient cars, ready to use – there you can admire remarkable
collection of cars made in Switzerland.

Die Stiftung Louis Moret
Der Offenheit ihres Schöpfers treu bleibend, zeigt die Stiftung Louis Moret
Ausstellungen zeitgenössischer Kunst, organisiert Vorträge und Zusammentreffen
und empfängt jedes Jahr eine musikalische Saison.
Fünf Ausstellungen pro Jahr zeigen die gegenwärtig aktuellen zeitgenössischen
Künstler, Maler, Graveure, Bildhauer, Architekten und Fotografen aus

The Mediatheque
The Valais-Martigny Mediatheque is both the canton’s audio-visual memory
and a public library. It collects, preserves, enhances and disseminates documents
relating to the Valais. It is a combined film, photo and sound library
of the Valais, and adds to the value of its archives with exhibitions, guided
tours, film shows and publications (books and DVDs) on sale in the bookshop.
It also houses the collections of the Gianadda Foundation art library.

Das Museum der Bernhardiner Hunde
Dieses lebendige Museum befindet sich neben dem römischen Amphitheater
im ehemaligen Zeughaus und beherbergt Kunstwerke und Dokumente,
die die Geschichte des Hospizes und des Grossen St.-Bernhard Passes erzählen.
Die legendären Bernhardiner Hunde sind ein wesentlicher Bestandteil
des Museums.
Eine moderne und spielerische Inszenierung bringt das ausgestellte Kulturgut
zur Geltung, um die weltberühmte Symbolik dieses legendären Hundes
zu bewahren. Ein Stockwerk ist temporären Ausstellungen gewidmet.
Der den Bernhardiner Hunden gewidmete Bereich ist mit einem inmitten
eines Parks mit Bäumen gelegenem Aussengehege verbunden, in dem sich
die Hunde vor den Augen des Publikums frei austoben können.
Ein Restaurant mit einer Terasse erwartet Sie für eine Pause.

The St. Bernard Dog Museum and Kennels
The museum is housed in the former military warehouse adjacent to the Roman
amphitheatre. It is the home of an array of artifacts and documents that tell the
story of the Great St. Bernard Hospice and
Pass. The legendary St. Bernard dogs form
an integral part of the place.
Using state-of-the-art and playful museography,
the exhibitions are dedicated to
highlighting this legacy and promoting
the famous St. Bernard dog as a universal
icon. One floor is reserved for temporary
exhibitions.
The area reserved for the St. Bernard dogs
is linked to an outdoor enclosure in a
wooded park where the dogs can romp
about and be watched by the public. If
you decide to take a break, there will be a
restaurant with a terrace waiting for you.

Die Mühle Semblanet
Die Mühle Semblanet steht unter Denkmalschutz und gilt als eine der ältesten
in der Schweiz bekannten industriellen Mühlen. Sie wurde gegen Ende
des 18 Jhd. erbaut.
Im Jahre 1885 erwirbt die Familie Semblanet aus Vallorcine im benachbarten
Frankreich die Mühle und betreibt sie bis 1946. 1989 schenkt ein
Nachkomme der Familie Semblanet,
Marie-Thérèse Zanoli,
die Mühle der Stiftung Semblanet,
mit dem Ziel, sie zu restaurieren
und wieder in Betrieb zu
setzen. Das gesamte Bauwerk
wird 1994 restauriert.

und durch ihre rationelle

The Semblanet Mill
Designed as a historic monument, the Semblanet Mill is one of the oldest
industrial-type mills known in Switzerland. It was built at the end of the
18th century.
In 1885, it was bought by the Semblanet family, native from Vallorcine,
in neighbouring France, who operated the mill it until 1946. In 1989, the
descendant Marie-Thérèse Zanoli founded the Semblanet Foundation with
the aim of restoring the mill and making it function again. All the buildings
were restored in 1994.
The Semblanet Mill is impressive,
both because of the scale of its
machinery as well as its rational
organization.
You can visit the Mill by booking
visit in advance to discover, in the
company of a guide, how it works.
The tour ends with a welcome
break in the adjacent wine cellar :
that is where you can try the local young wine, and sample some of the
many delicious dishes typical of the region.

Mit seinem jahrhundertealten Umriss erhebt sich das Schloss La Bâtiaz stolz auf
seinem Felsen und zieht unvermeidlich den Blick des Besuchers an.
Woher stammt der Name La Bâtiaz ? Ganz einfach aus dem Lateinischen
« bastida », das gefestigter Ort oder Festung bedeutet.
Heutzutage ist das Bauwerk von Mai bis Oktober der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich.
Es beherbergt eine mittelalterliche Gaststube, welche die Gäste verzaubern
wird, die von einer Reise in vergangene Zeiten träumen...
Verpassen Sie auf keinen Fall den Besuch des Schlossinneren : Entdecken Sie
den Innenhof, den grossen Saal und die Kapelle; besichtigen Sie den Folterraum
und schauen Sie einen 3D-Film, welcher die Geschichte von Martigny
im Mittelalter erzählt; schliesslich besteigen Sie den Turm und bestaunen die
Aussicht auf den Rhône-Bogen. Auf dem Aussenplatz, der Veranstaltungen
Platz bietet, besteht die Möglichkeit, sich mit der Welt der Belagerungsmaschinen
und deren Entwicklung über die Jahrhunderte vertraut zu machen,
eine nationale Besonderheit.

La Bâtiaz Castle
La Bâtiaz Castle, the age-old silhouette proudly rising from its rock, inevitably
attracts the attention of any visitor coming to Martigny.
What is the origin of the name “Bâtiaz”? It
simply comes from the Latin word “bastida”,
meaning a fortified place, or a fortress.
Today, the building is open to the public
from May to October. It houses a medieval
tavern, which will delight those who would
love travelling back in time…
Don’t miss the inside of the Castle – visit its
central courtyard, its large hall, and its chapel.
You can also see the torture chamber
and watch the 3D cartoon film that traces
Martigny’s history back to the Middle Ages;
finally, climb the keep and admire the view
over the entire Rhône elbow. In the square
outside the castle, which is used for public
events, visitors can find out about the history of siege engines, and their
development over the centuries, in a display that is unique in Switzerland.
Access to the site is by foot or on the small tourist train “Le Baladeur”, which
departs from the Place Centrale.

Bourg
Martigny-Bourg ist zweifellos das malerischste Viertel der Stadt. Das « Hôtel
des Trois Couronnes », auf der « Place du Bourg » wurde 1609 erbaut und
war einst Wohnsitz des Amtsvertreters des
Bischofs von Sitten. Heute beherbergt es
ein Restaurant. Daneben steht seit 1907
das Haus Couchepin, mit seiner Bruchstein-Fassade.
Die Hauptstrasse des Bourg beherbergt
lokale authentische Händler, die ihr Quartierleben
schätzen. Im Jahre 2007 wurden
die « Rue du Bourg » und die « Place du
Bourg » vollständig renoviert : die Pflastersteine
wurden durch Asphalt und Granit
ersetzt... Auf halbem Weg entlang
der Strasse steht das Gemeindehaus, das
mit seinen massiven Säulen als eine der
schönsten Bauten des Stadtviertels gilt.
Am oberen Strassenende steht die
Michaelskapelle mit ihrem berühmten
Glockenturm, an dem sich schon seit
mehreren Jahrzehnten eine Lärche angewurzelt hat. Gegenüber der Kapelle
befindet sich der berüchtigte « Place Saint-Michel » auf der 1840 die letzte
Hinrichtung stattfand.

The Bourg
The Martigny-Bourg is undoubtedly the most picturesque quarter in town.
The Hotel des Trois Couronnes, which is located in the Place du Bourg and
dates back to 1609, was the residence of the Vidomne (vicedominus), the
administrative representative of the bishop of Sion. Today, it houses a restaurant.
Next to it stands the Maison Couchepin, built in 1907 with a dressed
stone façade.
Along the main street, a range of local
and authentic shops gives the area a
lively atmosphere. The main street and
the Place du Bourg were completely
renovated in 2007, when the paving
stones were replaced with granite and
tarmac.
Halfway along the street, the “maison
de commune”, with its big columns,
stands out as one of the most splendid buildings in the area.
At the top end of the street is the chapel of Saint- Michel and its famous
clock-tower, on which a larch has been growing for several decades. Opposite
the chapel is the Place Saint-Michel, whose sad claim to fame is that the
last execution took place there in 1840.
Nearby you can explore the Semblanet Mill (pag 17), which is still functioning.

vom Stadtzentrum bis zum Schloss « La Bâtiaz » und dem Weiler « Plan
Cerisier ». Er lädt Sie ein, die Winzer, Kellereien, Vinotheken und Önotheken
von Martigny und Umgebung kennen zu lernen.
Der Weinwanderweg, der Ihnen eine schöne Aussicht auf die Stadt, das
Rhône-Tal und die Walliser Alpen bietet, kann optimalerweise je nach Wetterlage
zwischen Februar und November in sportlichen Schuhen begangen

Jedes Jahr erleuchtet das Feuerwerk am 1. August die Stadt mit pyrotechnischen
Effekten, die 300m hoch im Himmel weit im Umkreis Ihre Wirkung
zeigen. Dieses grandiose Spektakel wird vom Schloss « La Bâtiaz » aus vorbereitet.

Every year, on August 1, fireworks illuminate Martigny with pyrotechnic
effects that can be seen and heard all around the city, reaching over 300
meters high into the sky. Experts prepare this great show from the Castle of
Bâtiaz. This is the midsummer’s most outstanding event , with no less than
50,000 spectators with their eyes on the stars !

Martigny is a city with many businesses and shops. Their usual opening
hours are :
From 8:30 am to 12:00 am and from 1:30pm to 6:30 pm, from Monday
afternoon to Friday, and until 5:00 pm on Saturdays and the day before any
public holiday.
Shopping malls do not close for lunch, and are open on Friday night.

Ausstellungszentrum CERM
Mit mehr als 280 000 Besuchern im Jahr und mehr als 30 000 m² Fläche
bildet das Ausstellungs- und Kongresszentrum Martigny (Centre d’Expositions
et de Réunions de Martigny) einen Raum für Begegnungen und Austausch.
Jedes Jahr finden in diesem Zentrum rund 60 Veranstaltungen in
allen Grössenordnungen und aus allen Bereichen statt.
Die FVS Group als Betreiberin des CERM organisiert die grossen jährlichen
Veranstaltungen wie die Walliser Herbstmesse «Foire du Valais» – ein Muss !
– die Antiquitätenmesse, die Walliser Gebrauchtwagenmesse und den
Weihnachtsmarkt; daneben werden auch Fachmessen und alle zwei Jahre
stattfindende Veranstaltungen wie Agrovina (Internationale Fachmesse für
Önologie, Weinbau, Obstbau und besonderen Anbau) und die Walliser
Berufsmesse «Your challenge» durchgeführt. Dazu kommen regelmässige
internationale Veranstaltungen wie das FIFO (Internationals Folklorefestival
von Octodure), das Slide&Sound und viele weitere.
Seit 2010 bietet das CERM drei neue Seminarräume für 20, 60 oder 100

CERM Exhibitions Centre
With over 280,000 visitors a year and an area of more than 30,000 mq, the
Martigny Exhibitions and Meeting Centre (CERM) is an ideal venue for conferences
and events. Each year it hosts around sixty events of all sizes that
cover a wide range of subjects.
The FVS Group, which runs the CERM, organizes large annual meetings such
as the very important Valais Fair, the Second-Hand Goods and Antiques Fair,
the Valais Used Car Exhibition and the Christmas Fair, as well as specialized
fairs and biennial events such as the Agrovina (international oenology, wine
growing, tree cultivation and special farming exhibition), or the Valais “Your
challenge” Careers Fair.
There are also regular international events such as the FIFO (Octodure international
folk festival) and the Slide&Sound, among others.
In 2010 the CERM opened three new lecture rooms, for 20, 60 and
100 people.

Marécottes and its swimming
pool formed from natural rocks.
You can also do an excursion following
a dinosaur track (2:30 hours up from the Emosson dam) on the
fastest 2-cabin funicular in the world, as well as exploring the paths of the
Adventure Labyrinth with your family, and plunging into the cold waters of
the Trient or Durnand Gorges. Visit also the village of Champex, with its
lake nestling in the middle of pine forests and its Alpine garden, and explore
the mine trail of “Mont-Chemin”, following the footsteps of pilgrims up
to the pass – and stop for a rest at the Great St.Bernard Hospice.
Our visitors are also invited to enjoy a leisure break in the thermal baths in
Saillon or Ovronnaz, amidst vineyards and snow-covered peaks, or play a
round of golf in Verbier. For those of you who love skiing, snowboarding,
walking or mountain biking, there are 9 resorts with an authentic family
or international atmosphere and 580 km of skiing tracks, including the
4 Valleys.
Regional specialties are highlighted throughout the year at high-quality
events : the “Asparagus festival” in Saillon, the “Apricot Festival” in Saxon,
“Bagnes, the capital of Raclette cheese”, “Cheese and peaks” in Ovronnaz,
“The Chestnut Festival” and “ARVINE in capitals”, a wine festival in Fully.
Starting from Martigny, the “Mont-Blanc Express” runs throughout the year,
taking you across the Trient Valley to Chamonix. The “Saint-Bernhard
Express” takes you to the Verbier Valley or to the departure of the bus to the
Saint Bernard pass. If you plan an excursion to Italy in the Aosta Valley, the
Great St. Bernard tunnel is your safest route.
