MESSAGE FROM 

The Office

Over the past few 

weeks we have 

experienced many 

instances when our learners 

brought smiles to our faces. 

I am truly grateful for every 

learner, parent and teacher 

that makes the Curro 

Roodeplaat journey such a 

memorable one. The month 

of May saw a lot of marketing 

activities take place 

regarding visibility within the 

broader community during 

our exhibition in Kolonnade, 

as well as our open day here 

at school. I would also like 

to thank all our parents who 

took part in the “Your voice” 

survey. I will give feedback 

on this survey during the 

month of June 2017. 

With the exams just around 

the corner I would like to 

extend a word of thanks to 

all our learners and teachers 

that were involved in our 

winter sports. I am truly 

thankful for your commitment 

and dedication in taking our 

sport to the next level. Some 

of our teams will be involved 

in play offs and I wish them all 

of the best. Boipelo Moloisane 

has received provincial 

colours in hockey and was 

chosen for the u/14 Gauteng 

hockey team. She is the first 

learner in our high school to 

achieve provincial colours in 

a team sport and I would like 

to congratulate her and Ms 

Stroebel, her coach. Ruben 

Koekemoer played in his 

50th match for our First rugby 

team – this is an amazing 

achievement as he has been 

representing the school’s First 

team since he was in grade 9. 

Our learners taking part in the 

Pretoria Eisteddfod are really 

doing a sterling job. I had the 

privilege of handing over a 

number of certificates during 

the respective assemblies 

and paid testimony to the 

wonderful achievements. 

The Umalusi Council sets 

and monitors standards for 

general and further education 

and training in South Africa in 

accordance with the National 

Qualifications Framework Act 

No 67 of 2008 and the General 

and Further Education and 

Training Quality Assurance 

Act No 58 of 2001. Since the 

opening of the high school 

we have had provisional 

accreditation from Umalusi 

and had to go through a long 

and vigorous administration 

process and site visits by 

Umalusi, the last of which 

the last took place in March 

2017. I am happy to announce 

that the Umalusi Council has 

granted our school permanent 

accreditation as of 1 June 

2017. I am very proud of this 

achievement. I would also 

like to congratulate all our 

grade 12 teachers with their 

appointments as markers 

for the IEB National Senior 

Certificate exam in November 

2017. Ms Alet Bissett has been 

appointed as IEB marker for the 

grade 7 MATCH standardised 

tests and Ms Maria May has 

been appointed as marker 

for the Life Orientation CAT 

part B examination. Our main 

focus is and always will be the 

academic performance of our 

learners. The abovementioned 

teachers will add to our vision 

of a school of academic 

excellence.

HIGH SCHOOL 

HAPPENINGS 

As a teacher there is nothing 

more rewarding then 

investing in the lives of 

children. The past week I shared 

a quote of Steven R Covey 

with my grade 10 class: “The 

key is in not spending time, but 

investing it.” Although it led to an 

interesting discussion, it made me 

re-think our role as a school and 

a community and what we do to 

prepare our children for life after 

Curro Roodeplaat. I echo the 

words of our Executive Head, Mr 

Niemand: “we can watch the news 

and look at the world around us, 

and we have very good reason to 

be worried or even negative, but 

we have no control over those 

things. So let us focus on the 

things that we can control and 

that which is in front of us”. We so 

often complain about how busy 

we are and how time flies. Let us 

rather invest time in our children 

than merely spend time with them. 

The variating key between the 

two is that spending results in an 

outflow (drained and tiredness) 

whereas investing refers to 

inflow (uplifting and empowered).

Congratulations to Mia Biehler who 

took part in the Pretoria Eisteddfod 

where she achieved two A++ 

symbols. She took part in English 

drama, Non-English (Grade 8 & 9) 

and Afrikaans dramatised prose 

(Grade 8). We are extremely proud 

of her.

ACADEMICS 

Whilst we invest in quality 

time with our children, 

the reality is that they are 

starting with exams in less 

than a week’s time. They 

received their examination 

timetable in the beginning 

of the term and we ask all 

parents to please follow up 

on this. I would also like to 

encourage you as a parent 

to encourage your child to 

set goals for themselves 

for the examinations. 

Please know what their 

goals are and support 

your child to achieve them. 

Please take note that although we 

write some subjects in the week 

prior to the examination period, 

the examinations officially start on 

Friday, 9 June and therefore the 

study leave will only commence on 

Friday, 9 June. 

This means that learners 

are welcome to study at 

home on the days that they 

don’t write an exam and 

they are to also leave once 

they are done writing. The 

first session starts at 8:00 

a.m. and learners should 

be at school by 7:40 a.m. 

There will be busses 

arranged for our learners 

who make use of 

the bus transport 

and the busses 

will depart from 

school at 11:30 

a.m. A study 

class will be 

available 

for all wanting 

to study at school as 

well as compulsory for 

all learners who are waiting 

for the bus or other transport. 

The normal afternoon 

busses will still depart at 

the scheduled times and 

learners that are writing 

during the second session 

can make use of those 

busses. Please take note of 

the letter regarding all the 

other exam regulations that 

were pushed to your child’s 

electronic device on 25 May. 

Lastly we would like to remind our 

grade 12 parents of the compulsory 

winter school during the examination 

period. The timetable for the winter 

school has been sent to the learner’s 

electronic devices as well as 

published on the school’s website.

GIRLS HOCKEY ACHIEVEMENT 2017 

We are proud to announce that Boipelo 

Moloisane in grade 8 has been chosen for the 

Northen Gauteng under 14 B team. 

She is the first learner from any sporting code 

in the high school to have been chosen for 

any North Gauteng team in the history of the 

high school. 

They will be competing from the 1-5 of July 

2017 at Noordheuwel against the other 

provinces and we wish her all of the best. 

We know she will make us proud.

2017 was yet another 

successful netball season 

for Curro Roodeplaat. Not 

only did we have three 

complement of teams, but 

also performed extremely 

well in all age groups 

within our league. We are 

very proud to announce 

that our under 14 team 

won the D1 league and will 

be playing at the play-offs 

on 10 June at Girls High 

School. During the Curro 

Regional Tournament, 

our 1st team once again 

prevailed as victors of the 

tournament.

PRIMARY

Operational Head - Alta Theunissen 

“In life, if you want more, you must become 

more”

Here at our school we find real “gold” – 

not only in medals and trophies, but 

in people who really care and reach 

out to others, people who really make a 

difference. What a privilege to be part of 

Curro Roodeplaat! 

I see these golden moments in every 

smiling learner donating a blanket to the 

“cover me” project; learners who, armaround-the-shoulder, 

accompany injured 

friends to Charmaine or Chantelle who will 

also lovingly put a plaster on the “eina”; 

teachers who spend hours next to the sport 

fields or at the orator evenings; workers 

who (with a smile) keep the buildings and 

premises clean; parents who give up their 

time to handle sales, buy blankets and 

show their support next to the sport fields… 

And in between all of this the grade 4-7 

learners participated in the first round 

of the AMESA Mathematics Olympiad.

through to the next round!

Curro Castle will once again 

host their annual “MasterChef” 

competition on 10 June. All 

grade R to 3 learners, accompanied 

by an adult, are invited to join in the 

fun. Contact the Castle for further 

information. 

Thank you to all the parents who reacted 

to the Elevate Education study skills 

programme. It will take place on 30 

and 31 May for grade 4-7 learners who have 

enrolled. 

LOST AND FOUND 

There are quite a number of lost and found 

items. In future, all items will be displayed in 

the quad on the last Friday of each month. 

We are proud to announce 

that Ms Alet Bissett 

has been elected by 

the IEB as marker for grade 

7 MATCH papers. Eight of 

our learners have enrolled 

for these tests and we believe that the 

enrolment numbers will increase yearly. 

EXAMS 

Please take note that the exam starts on 14 

June. The exam time table is available on 

our web page.

Our excursion to Spar was 

greeted with outbursts of joy. 

The bus ride was a highlight. It stays 

a blessing to work with toddlers, 

because every day we explore 

and experience 

something new. 

Thank you to 

Mr Ferdi who 

accompanied us to say good-bye to our shoppers at 

the bus. Thank you to our qualified bus driver, Hannes, 

who did an excellent job. 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION 

Tickets for the competition will be sold from 25 May – 2 June 

at a cost of R300 per team (all ingredients will be given to our 

teams with which to cook and boil). An information letter explaining 

the process, rules and cooking procedures will be attached to the ticket 

Guess our MasterChef bear’s name for R10 a guess, and you can 

win! (MasterChef bear will be on display in the entrance hall for the 

month of May). Just think how snuggly it will be so sleep with that big 

bear during the winter.
