guyson robot blasting prior to thermal spray coating
Skipton based finishing equipment manufacturer
Guyson International has designed, built and
installed a twin pressure pot, Guyson RB10 PF
robotically controlled blasting system into a
world leading manufacturer of high-performance
coatings, for the dual application of keying the
surface of aerospace seal rings prior to plasma
spraying and the surface preparation of turbine
blade tips prior to thermal spray coating.
The Guyson RB10 blast cabinet has a one and
half metre square internal blast chamber
dimension and is fitted, in the centre, with a small
7th axis turntable designed to accommodate the
customers varied fixtures, due to the multiple
uses of the cabinet. Located in the back wall of the
cabinet is the encased arm of an ABB foundry
plus robot, equipped with a boron carbide blast
nozzle which it precisely manipulates around the
fixtured components. The robotic manipulation
of the blast nozzle maintains the optimum surface
speed, blasting angle and the exact offset distance
from blast nozzle to component. The robot fixture
actually holds two blast nozzles - each with a
separate blast media supply - but only the one
appropriate nozzle linked to each of the
applications is active at any one time.
Blasting is undertaken via either of the two
Guyson Model G55 pressure pots (55 litres each)
and each could be filled with different media,
these generate the blast stream, with media being
fed from the appropriate pressure vessel into the
travelling column machines
expand customer choice
RK International Machine Tools reputation as
one of the leading suppliers of high performance
grinding machines has been further enhanced
by the addition of the Mini and Maxi ranges of
travelling column surface grinders from its longterm
principal, Delta s.p.a. The Italy-based
grinding specialist’s Mini and Maxi range of
travelling column surface grinders to UK-based
customers through RK International, exclusive
UK and Irish agent.
The Mini range encompasses three machines
with maximum grinding areas ranging from 800
x 550 mm through to 1600 x 650 mm, while the
more expansive Maxi range features 15 models
from 1200 x 775 mm to 3000 x 1100 maximum
grinding surface. Features of both ranges
include the use of a stabilised Meehanite castiron
structure for maximum rigidity and
grinding performance. Each machine also
benefits from hydrostatic support on all
machine slideways which generates zero friction
and eliminates wear in order to maintain
accuracy over extended periods of operation,
with finished component quality further
enhanced by the elimination of stick/slip.
The spindle, which is supported on the
travelling column, is a servo-ventilated type,
with a Mackensen hydrodynamic bearing on the
front and a pair of pre-loaded precision ball
bearings on the rear. This set-up provides the
user with zero wear, maximum durability and
zero friction, which delivers fine surface finishes
and high geometric and machining precision.
The machines come with a choice of control
units, in the case of the Mini & Maxi range users
can select from the Diastep, CN Plus
Touchscreen or full Siemens SINUMERIK,. The
Diastep system controls all machine functions,
displays the axes, and has automatic grinding
cycle accessed through a menu system,
including rough grinding, finish grinding, spark
out, automatic dressing with compensation. The
control also allows the operator to modify the
entered parameters without interrupting the
cycle. The CN Plus Touchscreen brings
additional storage for part programs and, linear
and interpolated wheel dressing on the table
making use of wheels with parametric profiles,
multi-surface machining, and shoulder grinding
on the Y-axis possible. With the Siemens CNC
option users have even greater flexibility thanks
to the user-friendly and powerful operatormachine
interface, with an unlimited number of
workpiece machining cycles that can be recalled
in sequence. Wheel dressing can be carried out
with one or more diamonds or, with a diamond
dressing disc. The control also includes
integrated CAD-CAM capable of generating and
dynamically simulating profiles and provide
optimisation of movement for the grinding
wheel and part surface.
Dick Aldrich, RK International Machine
Tools’ Director, says: “The Delta range has
proved to be very popular thanks to the
technical excellence and cost-effective pricing of
the range. The Mini and Maxi ranges are further
examples of how Delta is developing grinding
machines with the specifications and options
that meet the needs of a wide range of
customers.”
cabinet through heavy duty hose to the blast
nozzle.
Whilst blasting the media quality is
maintained, to give a more consistent surface
finish, with a Guyson Cyclone Reclamator
mounted above a sieving system and the twin
pressure pots. A highly efficient model C800
Cartridge Dust Collection unit is used to draw off
the dust laden air from the cyclone reclamator.
The dust collector is fitted with a HEPA
secondary filter and explosion relief panel which
is joined to a vertical ducting assembly that takes
the force upwards should the explosion relief
panel be triggered.
Monitoring and control of the complex blast
system is provided via a PLC/HMI graphical
display which gives a real time visual display of
what is happening throughout the system.
Downtime is reduced as fault notification can be
programmed to display specific screen messages
regarding warnings and failures. Also parameter
changes can be easily made, making future
proofing more feasible and simpler.
Interested parties who would like to explore
the vast opportunities that Guyson’s robot
blasting can bring about are encouraged to
submit sample components for free feasibility
Payment Plan
launched
Yamazaki Mazak has launched a monthly
payment plan option for machine users
interested in its QT-COMPACT entry-level
series of machines.
The new 60-month finance plan, which is
being provided in association with Mazak’s
dedicated finance partner, will enable the
acquisition of a brand new Mazak machine
but with low, manageable monthly payments
and an initial deposit (the offer is based on
meeting certain criteria and is subject to
status). This initial offer will run to the end of
August 2017.
Alan Mucklow, Managing Director UK
and Ireland, Sales Division at Yamazaki
Mazak, commented: “We are committed to
offering the benefits of Mazak ownership to
as wide a spectrum of UK machine users as
possible. This sort of monthly finance plan is
perfectly suited to our entry-level machines,
such as the QT-COMPACT series, that offer a
short lead-time turnkey solution that can
start paying back immediately following
installation.”
The QT-COMPACT series of machines
comes with a three-year warranty that can be
extended to four or five years, and includes
accidental operator damage, installation and
full training. The monthly finance plan also
enables the first installment to be paid 90
days after delivery.
The machine is equipped with a high
rigidity integral spindle and conversational
EIA/ISO programming capability in the
form of its SmoothC technology. Milling
variants are equipped with 5.5kW driven
tooling. Machines available in the offer
include an 8 inch through hole chuck, swarf
conveyor, bar feed interface, auto parts
catcher, signal tower, tool eye and 5 Bar
coolant.
Mr Mucklow believes that the new
monthly payments option will enable many
more machine users to consider upgrading
their capabilities to include a new Mazak
machine. “Machine users will be getting a
brand new Mazak machine built to our
global manufacturing standards, but with a
flexible payment option that makes it easier
than ever before to integrate Mazaks into
their machining operations.”
rental fits the bill for Paxford
engineering
Paxford Engineering like many similar
engineering companies across the UK does
not describe itself as ‘cash rich, and as a
partnership rather than a limited company
raising finance to bring in new machine tools
can be an issue. With this in mind Moretonin-Marsh-based
business is a terrific advocate
of the XYZ Machine Tools rental scheme,
allowing it to have the latest machinery on a
flexible and relatively low-cost arrangement.
Paxford Engineering currently has three
machines under the XYZ rental scheme,
which operates in 12-month blocks with an
initial down-payment. Then, at the end of
each 12-month period the user has three
options: to return the machine; buy it
outright at a pre-agreed price; or extend the
rental period for another year with a further
single payment, these subsequent rentals
Mills CNC, the exclusive distributor of
Doosan machine tools in the UK and Ireland,
has announced that it is now supplying,
supporting and stocking Doosan lathes with
Siemens 828 Controls and onboard ShopTurn
conversational programming software.
Similar to its Siemens Control launch and
roll-out programme for vertical machining
centres the company initiated back in 2015 -
Mills’ roll-out strategy for Doosan lathes will,
in the first instance, focus on selected
horizontal single turret machines starting
with its popular and best-selling Lynx and
GT2100/GT2600/GT3100 lathe ranges.
The introduction of Siemens-controlled
lathes will increase the attractiveness of the
Lynx and GT-series machines still further
especially amongst those UK and Irish
precision component manufacturers who, in
the past, decided against acquiring a Doosan
lathe because it could not be supplied with
their preferred control.
This move by Mills will enable the
company to penetrate the Siemens control
user market that was hitherto out of reach
and, more importantly, will mean that
manufacturers no longer need to
compromise when it comes to investing in a
high-quality, ultra-reliable and costcompetitive
lathe.
being based on a reducing percentage of the
original machine cost. At the end of the
fourth year the machine can be purchased
outright with a final payment or, returned to
XYZ Machine Tools.
“The scheme works perfectly for us as we
do not have to commit to a large cash outlay
and, as a general subcontractor we do not
work with specific market sectors, meaning
we don’t know what work is coming in from
one week to another, let alone from one year
to the next,” says Paxford Engineering
Partner, Guy Nicholls. “This is why the
ability to end the XYZ rental agreement and
bring in different machining capacity, at
relatively short notice, works well for me and
my business partner Ben Blackmore.” An
example of this was the very first machine
taken by Paxford Engineering, an XYZ EMX
3000 two-axis knee mill. Guy and Ben
quickly realised that they had a requirement
for three-axis machining, so after 12 months
they gave it back and replaced it with an XYZ
SMX 3500 bed mill. “The ability to give the
mill back after one year with no penalty was
very convenient,” confirms Guy Nicholls.
turning to siemens!
Says Tony Dale, Mills CNC’s Technical
Director: “We have always supplied Doosan
lathes with the latest Fanuc Controls - and
will continue to do so.
“However, a significant proportion of UK
and Irish manufacturers (especially those
involved in machining high-precision
aerospace components), prefer the Siemens
Control systems.
“A few years ago Doosan launched and
began supplying Siemens controlled lathes to
selected markets in Asia and Europe (most
notably Germany). The reaction within these
markets to the initiative has been (and is)
extremely positive.
“The steady growth in demand for
Siemens controlled lathes here in the UK and
Ireland has been the catalyst behind us now
selling and stocking these lathes and we are
confident that we will soon be acquiring and
growing share of the Siemens’ user market as
a consequence.”
JonEs & shipman UlTramaT adds
anoThEr dimEnsion
As one of the leading manufacturers
specialising in aerospace flight control
component manufacture and sub-assemblies,
West Yorkshire based Produmax Limited has
focussed heavily on its manufacturing
operations resulting in several significant
investments in machine tools in the past five
years.
Among its newest acquisitions is a Jones operation.
& Shipman Ultramat 1000 CNC B universal
grinder that has been acquired to replace
three older J&S machines, giving Produmax a
range of new grinding options while
significantly reducing manufacturing cycle
times on a number of components.
Due to the high quality ethos running
throughout the company supported by a
robust QMS system, Produmax Limited has
become the first company outside of the USA
to achieve the latest AS 9100 revision D
quality standard and the first company
globally to be accredited to prEN 9100:2016.
One of larger contracts that Produmax
undertakes is the manufacture and assembly
of wing flap actuators for Bombardier –
which have been produced successfully for
over 20 years. The actuator assembly
contains a number of components where
concentricity and a good seal between
surfaces is essential for unblemished
The new Ultramat CNC has
proved highly adept in this grinding
operation while reducing the cycle times
from 25 minutes to around 5.
Produmax is also producing significant
numbers of components destined for
installation on the latest C series aircraft
which is being assembled by Bombardier
factories around the world; quite a few of
these components are hard chromed and
ground using the new Jones & Shipman
Ultramat.
As Produmax Operations Director Paul
Birtles explains “having a machine with such
capability and capacity means the technical
team are continually finding new projects for
it in addition to those we had initially
allocated on its installation. This has given us
greater flexibility when reviewing methods
70% Tool cosT savings
A ‘world’s first’ in manufacturing has created a
commercially viable process to produce critical
aerospace type components such as engine blisks
and compressor blades from nickel-based super
alloys enables them to be rough machined out of
solid up to three times faster while saving up to 70
per cent on tooling costs.
The machining operations are being carried out
at General Electric Aviation’s manufacturing
facility in Detroit in partnership with Japanese
machine, cell and system builder Mitsui Seiki with
its prototype HW63-TD hybrid 5-axis machining
centre which is represented in the UK by 2D CNC
Machinery based in Hinckley.
The patented Blue Arc process uses electroerosion
to enable ultra-high speed roughing cycles
whereby electrical energy creates the spark
between the tool and workpiece and strategically
melts the material against a programmed cycle
which is followed by intense flushing to remove the
molten material.
Said Tom Dolan, Vice President Sales and
Marketing of Mitsui Seiki (USA): “The process is
akin to reverse welding using thermal cutting
techniques and opens up a vast array of potential
savings for producing traditional difficult-tomachine
components across a wide sector of
manufacturing such as oil and gas, nuclear, medical
and power generation. Blue Arc is also able to
reduce the need for expensive, large and high
powered machine tools for rough machining thus
reducing capital investment costs by up to a third
plus the on-going costs attributed to expensive
cutting tools.”
The prototype hybrid Mitsui Seiki HW63-TD is
based on a 5-axis horizontal machining centre
while maintaining a standard spindle and
components which have been adapted to
accommodate the Blue Arc process. Originally
developed at GE as a submerged EDM type
process, the working partnership with Mitsui
Seiki’s development team created the application
based on ‘air cutting’ where the copper electrode
engages with the workpiece using low voltage and
high amperage. Here, the resulting spark creates
heat that locally melts the workpiece material.
When compared to milling, energy consumption
demands for the roughing process is up to a quarter
lower. A high pressure multi-jet flushing system
removes the spent material from the cutting zone.
The Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing
Research Centre (Nuclear AMRC) is a
collaboration of academic and industrial
partners from across the civil nuclear
manufacturing supply chain, with the mission
of helping UK manufacturers win work at
home and worldwide.
The Nuclear AMRC brings together the
experience and resources of industry leaders with
the expertise and innovation of leading
universities. It is owned by the University of
Sheffield and is part of its world-leading advanced
manufacturing innovation cluster alongside the
AMRC with Boeing, Castings Technology
International and AMRC Training Centre. All
requirements for sawing at the facility were
originally undertaken by subcontractors, but this
route was eventually considered to be too time
consuming as well as being an expensive option.
It was therefore decided that the most effective
solution to all the possible requirements for
sawing would be to acquire an in-house sawing
facility.
After assessing a variety of different sawing
systems from five independent suppliers, Prosaw
were identified as the company most capable of
delivering a cost effective and optimum system
suitable for the needs of all possible applications.
A WH-6056HA twin column bandsaw was
selected as the most advantageous solution and
was duly installed by Prosaw engineers.
While Blue Arc can be applied to a more
compact machine frame having a lower rigidity
factor and available at a lower price, the advantage
of the current build specification of the prototype 5-
axis Mitsui Seiki HW63-TD with a BS50 taper, plus
a capacity for 120 tools, means that following the
Blue Arc roughing cycle the machine is able to
continue to accommodate more detailed semifinishing
or finishing operational cycles. These can
include profiling, slotting, pocketing, drilling and
facing without the workpiece being removed and
the machine being reset.
Italian manufacturer, IEMCA, has
significantly improved the performance of its
popular KID 80 short bar magazine to keep
pace with the higher functionality of modern
CNC turning centres. Availability in the UK
and Ireland is through sole agent, 1st
Machine Tool Accessories, Salisbury.
The magazine is suitable for feeding stock
between 5 and 80 mm in diameter and from
250 to 1,615 mm long. It integrates with fixed
or sliding head CNC turning machines and is
also suitable for feeding cam-operated lathes.
Pre-existing attributes are simplicity of use,
precise mechanical bar location and no
compressed air connections. It is fast in
operation, ideal for short to medium batch
runs.
A notable design improvement avoids the
need for the bar pusher to move during
component transfer between the main and
sub spindles. Most short magazines have to
check the position of the material in the
spindle during transfer, so the lathe has to
decelerate the spindle, increasing noncutting
time. Productivity is therefore higher
with the KID 80 IV during single-hit
machining of components requiring two
operations, one at each end.
A further innovation is the ability to load
a new bar while the last part is being
machined, reducing changeover time, and it
is possible to feed into position without a bar
stop. A new quick-change connection system
eliminates the need to use tools when
changing the bar pusher, reducing set-up
times even further.
Other new features of the KID 80 IV
include an increase in rack capacity from 250
kg to 400 kg, greatly extending production
output during unattended running. The
software in the Siemens control has also been
improved and a 7-inch touch screen fitted for
ease of setting and operation.
operation may be viewed at:
AEROSPACE
Tornos has now introduced its new Almac
CU 1007R, an innovative new machining
solution that has been developed to produce
prismatic components such as high-precision
connectors for the aerospace industry. The
CU 1007R machine is equipped with a bartype
loader and a comprehensive system for
simultaneous 4-axis machining.
The new Tornos solution is ideal for
complex automated machining in the
aerospace industry with its pick-off collet
and finished-workpiece collection unit that
are integrated into the machine. Making it
more appealing for the aerospace connector
sector, the Almac CU 1007R has bar-type
loading built-in to provide superb
production autonomy levels. This type of
loading system has now been integrated into
the CU 1007R machining centre to combine
precision and large-volume production,
while keeping the investment level under
control.
The machining of high-precision
connectors for the aerospace industry
actually demands high precision and in
particular, the ability to produce large
volumes with maximum autonomy. Thanks
to its mechanical concept, the CU 1007R
boasts high precision machining, even in its
basic version. This is more prominent when
the customer specifies a machine with linear
CAM manufacturer, OPEN MIND
Technologies will be presenting the latest
edition of its hyperMILL® software solution
at the International Paris Air Show. The trade
fair in Le Bourget, France, is the largest and
most important meeting point for the
aerospace industry. On Stand G77 in Hall 4,
OPEN MIND will demonstrate innovative
CAM technologies that allow companies to
make their manufacturing processes more
efficient and reduce machining times by up
to 90 percent.
With its hyperMILL® CAM system,
OPEN MIND offers intelligent solutions to
meet the challenges arising in the aerospace
industry. The hyperMILL® MAXX
Machining performance package, in
scales instead of rotary encoder. As far as the
autonomy in production is concerned, the
machine previously had to be equipped with
loading peripherals such as a small robotic
arm that were intended to load material
billets and often proved to be expensive.
Depending on the size of the connectors
to be machined, up to 100 parts can be
machined from each 3m bar. This
corresponds to an autonomous production
level of between 20 and 30 hours of
machining per bar, subject to the complexity
of the parts to be machined. The question
may arise as to whether the use of an
automatic bar feeder is reasonable because of
the additional investment required. If it does,
then a manual bar loader offers sufficient
autonomy at a very competitive price.
“The aerospace industry is one of the
most technically demanding industries.
Manufacturing companies operating in this
area face considerable challenges such as
high cost pressures, precision, difficult
materials, efficient procedures and certifiable
processes. OPEN MIND caters for these
parameters by offering reduced machining
Machinery World, June 2017 21

Collaborative robots, or ‘cobots’ as they have
been coined by industry, are one of the most
notable automation trends in recent years.
The ability of cobots to work alongside
humans without safety guarding is opening
up a plethora of new applications and
markets.
A case in point is the aerospace sector.
Despite the lack of volume throughput, there
are still plenty of repetitive tasks in putting
together an aircraft, not least drilling,
fastening, welding, dispensing, sealing and
inspection. With this in mind, a number of
vendors in robot technologies will be present
at this year’s Paris Air Show (19-25 June),
including Kuka, Fanuc and Stäubli.
Kuka will be hoping to replicate the
success it is currently enjoying with its
collaborative robot range in sectors such as
automotive. Indeed, a recent example has
seen the Škoda Auto plant in Vrchlabí, Czech
Republic, which produces automatic
transmissions, install a Kuka LBR iiwa. The
robot, sited next to human assembly workers,
has been set to work inserting gear actuator
pistons into the transmissions.
“This kind of transmission has very high
requirements for precision,” says Ivan
Slimák, general manager at the plant. “We
have a lot of moving parts with very, very
tight tolerances.”
This ability to perform highly repetitive
tasks with complete reliability and without
taking a break, means many of the major
vendors now have a cobot to offer.
Among their number is Fanuc, which will
also be present at the Paris Air Show. Three
small collaborative robots have recently been
added to the company’s industrial robot
portfolio: the CR-4iA, CR-7iA and CR-7iA/L.
These will complement the larger CR-35iA
collaborative robot, which offers a payload of
35kg.
The CR-4iA is the smallest of the Fanuc
collaborative series, with a payload of 4kg,
while the CR-7iA and CR-7iA/L (long arm)
are able to lift up to 7kg. Customers have the
option to incorporate Fanuc’s intelligent
functions into these robots, including vision
and force-sensor technologies.
Elsewhere, one vendor that specialises
solely in cobots is Universal Robots, which
reports high uptake for its technologies.
Indeed, the company anticipates revenue
growth of 50% in 2017.
Among those enjoying the benefits of UR
cobots is Canada-based Etalex, where a UR10
picks metal parts from a press brake.
Unlike more traditional industrial robots
that normally stay bolted in one spot, the
lightweight UR robots can easily be moved
and reprogrammed for various production
tasks. Plant engineer at Etalex, Jean-Francois
Rousseau, was eager to try out this new type
of robot: “We needed a flexible automation
solution that could be used for 10 different
production cycles. Since I only have 6ft of
space in front of the press brake, it was
ROBOTICS
COLLABORATE TO ACCUMULATE
important that I could run this application
without safety guarding.”
Before the arrival of the company’s new
robot colleague, an employee would spend 8
hours a day manually unloading the press
brake. These manual tasks have now been
reduced to an hour per day spent inspecting
the quality of each pallet of parts and
changing the coils, resulting in a rapid ROI of
about 12 months.
Machine-tool tending is of course a
primary application for conventional robotic
arms, a fact that can be verified by Wiganbased
Suscom Industries, a supplier of
components to the office furniture industry.
Suscom stopped all manufacturing
operations over 20 years ago after electing to
offshore. Today, however, after an
investment of £750,000, the company has
reshored the production of office chair bases
back to the UK – more profitably and with
greater control over stock and availability.
Suscom is using two 600-tonne Romi
injection moulding presses, with product
handling and castor assembly managed by
three Kawasaki robots.
Both Romi presses are served by their
own Kawasaki RS-20N robot, which picks
the completed moulding and sprue from the
mould ejector pins. The robot delivers the
sprue to a granulator for recycling, and
checks to ensure that the sprue is detached
from the moulding. Placing the chair base on
to a cooling conveyor, the same Kawasaki
robot then picks up a slip ring, delivered by a
bowl feeder, which it assembles into the
centre of the moulding.
Each Romi press has its own conveyor
delivering mouldings to a single Kawasaki
RS-50N robot. This third robot unloads chair
bases from the cooling conveyors and places
them firstly into a turnover jig, and then into
a castor assembly cell. After moving to a
check point that confirms the correct size has
been picked, the robot presses the castor into
one of five location points. On completion of
castor assembly, the robot picks up the
assembled base and places it on to another
conveyor.
Another interesting UK robotics
investment can be seen at the Telford plant of
oil mist collector manufacturer, Filtermist,
which has invested in an ABB robot for its
welding department. The robot has been
installed to TIG weld internal drums and
outer cases. Here, cylindrical steel blanks are
positioned on a turntable inside a dedicated
welding cell, before the robot applies the
weld while the table slowly rotates. The robot
is helping to increase productivity by
enabling skilled workers to undertake other
jobs such as planishing and linishing, says
the firm.
Of course, many robots run on tracks, and
here too development continues apace. For
instance, Güdel’s latest TMF-5 linear track
has been designed to help extend the reach of
heavy-duty robots.
Many of today’s six-axis robots can
handle payloads up to 1300kg, but their
horizontal reach is generally less than 4m,
which can be a limiting factor in certain
applications. This is why Güdel has
developed its TMF-5 linear track, which is
said to be the only standard module
currently available that can move an
articulated robot weighing over 6 tonnes
(with a payload of 1300kg) and sustain a
static payload of over 10 tonnes.
Working as a fully-integrated seventh axis
for robots, the TMF-5 opens up new
possibilities in a number of production
processes. A range of adaptor plates,
designed to suit the increasing number of
heavy-duty robots now available, maximises
the potential for integration with different
manufacturers and their respective robot
models.
HydraUliC
CHUCK
Gewefa has developed a unique
hydraulic chuck for holding Sandvik
Coromant EasyFix® boring bars that
removes the need for reduction sleeves
while eliminating run out and
guaranteeing the centre height at the
insert cutting tip.
Setting time is substantially reduced –
by as much as 75% - with the Gewefa
design featuring a spring plunger
mounted in the toolholder body. This
locates into a fine groove machined into
all Sandvik EasyFix boring bar shanks
and aligns the bar position precisely for
the correct centre height. Along with the
hydraulic chuck operation, a secure grip
is guaranteed with integral antivibration
damping to optimise the
machining process.
By eliminating the previously
accepted method of securing boring bars
into a toolholder with reduction sleeves,
the opportunities for inaccuracy and bar
deflection during boring operations are
now greatly reduced.
Gewefa also offers a system for other
proprietary systems with the ground
angle on the back end (of the bar)
locating against a stop pin at the base of
the toolholder. This ensures precise
central positioning and orientation with
the bar then locked into the hydraulic
chuck.
ModelliNg for
CUSToMerS
To streamline the project planning and
purchasing of workholding equipment,
Hainbuch has now developed an on-line
CAD package where customers can build
their own customised workholding
solution.
The Hainbuch CAD models are available
for customers to build via the Hainbuch
website(www.hainbuch.partcommunity.com).
On the portal, customers can create bespoke
Hainbuch clamping systems and build the
most efficient workholding device for their
exact needs.
Taking this ingenious system a step
further, the Hainbuch facility also allows
customers to download the CAD file
from the Hainbuch website and model a
complete fixture with components and
the machine tool in the CAD system used
by the customer. By importing Hainbuch
models and putting components into
chucks and workholding devices on
internal CAD systems, end-users can
visualise and calculate machining
strategies and potential issues before
even placing an order.
Having the ability to measure
parameters such as the clearance and
kinematics of the machine tool as well as
having the tools to visualise potential for
errors and collisions with spindles and
toolholding equipment prior to purchase
will generate huge savings for Hainbuch
customers.
Commenting upon this new
development from the workholding
specialists, Hainbuch UK Managing
Director, Mr Nick Peter says: "We are
often asked to generate CAD models for
machine tool builders; with the new CAD
package machine tool builders can build
a suitable workholding solution with
their prospective customers."
To build your own bespoke
workholding solution, please visit the
Improve your CNC Machine’s Accuracy
with our on-site calibration service
Our Professional Calibration Services for users of Machine Tools and measuring
equipment, are traceable to National Standards by our UKAS accreditation. Our
staff are highly qualified, and experienced in all aspects of Machine Tool
Metrology, from basic axis positioning (linear and rotary) to full volumetric
evaluation, error mapping, software compensation and diagnostic analysis.
www.bigkaiser.com
Accuracy enhancement – Is usually achieved by Software Error Correction,
and our in house software generates data from the calibration results for the
compensation schemes used by most types of CNC controllers, from a simple
straight line correction to a full volumetric error map. Usually the error
correction is updated automatically, reducing the timescale and possible human
error..
Reports and Certification – results can be analysed to various international
standards. Reports and UKAS calibration certificates are provided in PDF format
for easy distribution to relevant parties by the customer.
Minimum Downtime – Guaranteed by application of our Automated
Calibration Software and techniques. Typically a 3-axis CNC machine can be
error compensated and calibrated in approximately 7 hours.
The latest release of Alphacam, from Vero
Software, continues to intuitively automate
key CAD/CAM operations, improving
manufacturing productivity and efficiency.
Automation Manager includes
enhancements to simplify the workflow,
including Multi-drill control, new Styles
functionality, and further support for
additional CAD file formats.
The introduction of Automation Manager
Plus across all levels of Alphacam allows
advanced automation to support the
processing of Constrained Drawings and
Parametric Sketches, and Part Grain Direction
through sheet Grain Direction and Alignment
Vector options. It also includes the Cabinet
Door Manufacture (CDM) module.
Alphacam 2017 R2 also sees the first
release of its integration with robot simulation
software, meaning that output toolpaths
generated within Alphacam can be passed
directly to RoboDK’s Offline Programming
(OLP) to simulate robot kinematics, along
with a range of applications and activities
such as robot milling. RoboDK then outputs
the OLP to the robot controller.
As part of the Vero Customer Experience
Improvement Program, Alphacam integrates
Microsoft Analytics to gather software usage
statistics.
A new Reverse Cut Direction option has
been added to Rough/Finish, creating
toolpaths in the opposite direction to the tool
direction on the geometry. Alphacam Brand
Manager Simon Mathias says this is
particularly useful when creating multiple
passes around a shape which need to go in
alternate directions, such as polishing and
sanding profiled edges.
Sawing has been enhanced by controlling
how the foul avoidance is applied. It can be
applied to None or All of the selected
machining geometries. Alternatively, a
separate selection can be made for the
avoidance geometries. Foul avoidance
geometries appear in a new branch of the
Operation tree, where geometries can be
added or removed, and the selection remade.
In conclusion Simon Mathias says: “The
automation enhancements in Alphacam 2017
R2 assist manufacturers to improve
productivity and profitability by speeding up
their manufacturing processes.”
The Force module is a physics-based
optimisation method that determines the
maximum reliable feed rate for a given
cutting condition based on four factors: force
on the cutter, spindle power, maximum chip
thickness, and maximum allowable feed rate.
It calculates ideal feed rates by analysing tool
geometry and parameters, material
properties of the stock and cutting tool,
detailed cutting edge geometry, and
VERICUT cut-by-cut contact conditions.
In this latest version, VERICUT 8.0.3,
numerous enhancements have been added to
Force, including new features for better
control of entry/exit speeds, ‘clean-up’ feed
rates, and tooling information has been rearranged
to be more intuitive. The updated
Force module now receives input values
directly from cloud-based tooling, and
benefits from many new features that
streamline optimisation setup. By micro
analysing the cutting conditions encountered
by an NC Program, Force ensures NC
programs have optimal feed rates, and ideal
chip thicknesses that do not exceed safe force
or power limits.
new Products – new Products – new Products
new, diamondtiPPed
Boring
tools
Diamond-tipped Supermini and Mini tools
with internal cooling directly to the cutting
edge are the latest additions to the products
Horn offers for boring, profiling and
grooving.
The new ranges of insert tooling are well
suited to machining aluminium, sintered
carbide, ceramics and plastics. The tools are
also designed for tackling non-ferrous
materials that are either very abrasive due to
their high silicon content or have a tendency
to exhibit chipping problems and form builtup
edges.
Supermini tools with CVD-D or PCD
cutting edges are available in diameters from
1.5 mm and with three different geometries
to suit the application. H0 geometry with a
rake angle of zero degrees is for machining
hard, brittle materials such as carbides, presintered
ceramic materials, graphite and
short-chipping brass.
H5 geometry with a rake angle of 5
degrees is used to machine abrasive and soft
materials, including aluminium alloys with a
high silicon content, fibre-reinforced plastics
and other plastics with abrasive content.
Diamond is also used successfully as a
cutting material without chipping problems
when working with precious metals and
non-ferrous heavy metals such as platinum,
iridium, gold, tantalum and titanium, as well
as sintered metals like tungsten copper.
The specially developed, active HF chip
breaker geometry solves virtually all
machining problems caused by uncontrolled,
stringy swarf. It is intended for use on longchipping,
non-ferrous metals such as all
wrought aluminium alloys, and also copper
and its alloys such as bronze and both leadfree
and low-lead (long-chipping) brass.
victor cnc takes-off
with new 5-axis vmc range
Victor CNC has now announced the arrival of
the latest additions to its range of high-end
machining centres, the Vcenter-AX800, the
AX800II and the AX800 Aero 320. Developed
for the 5-axis machining of large parts in the
range of 1m diameter, the new Vcenter AX800
is a precision powerhouse that now has an
AX800II and Aero 320 variant that have been
added for the ever diversifying demands of
end users
The impressive new Vcenter AX800 has
been configured with a swivelling head B-axis
and a rotating C-axis table that is clamped at a
high torque of 3433Nm for heavy duty
machining. As can be expected from Victor
CNC, the AX800 has been built with rigidity
and performance at the core of its design. This
is evident in the B-axis that has a Hirth
coupling that will rotate at increments of 1
degree with exceptional precision and
repeatability.
Evolving the machine a step further for
particularly complex components and
especially thin walled parts that are
manufactured in the aerospace industry,
Victor CNC has also introduced the new
AX800 Aero 320. With the new AX800 Aero
320, the bar has been raised in machine tool
technology. Victor CNC has removed the C-
axis that is on the standard AX800 and
The extremely popular Cyber Series of end
mills from Industrial Tooling Corporation
(ITC) has now been extended with new
developments added to the market leading
3051 Series. The long series of square-end
tools has now been enhanced with the
addition of various corner radii for each
diameter variant.
The 3-flute centre cutting end mill line has
long been acknowledged as the first choice
end mill series for machining cavities, deep
slots and particularly deep shoulders. Now,
the R&D department at ITC has added to the
3051 Series by offering a selection of corner
radii as well as the existing tools with wiper
flats. Like the square-end 3051 Series, the
extended line is available in diameters of 3, 4,
5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16 and 20mm diameters. The 3
to 5mm diameter tools are offered with
corner radii from 0.25 to 1mm in 0.25
increments whilst diameters from 6mm and
above offer corner radii that also includes
1.25, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4 and 5mm depending
upon the chosen tool diameter.
AX800II models and replaced it with twinrotary
tables (A-axis). Incorporating
synchronous control technology, this new
variant makes it possible to precision machine
extremely delicate and thin walled parts such
as aerospace engine and turbine components
as well as structural aerospace parts.
Utilising full 5-axis control via the FANUC
31i-B5 CNC control unit, the AX800 Aero 320
manages the twin rotary tables and tilting
head with seamless simplicity and
synchronicity. This exciting addition to the
AX800 range incorporates a HSK-A63 spindle
configuration with a table diameter of 320mm
plus an adjustable span between the tables.
For further details on the new Vcenter
AX800, the AX800II or the Aero 320, please
itc extends long reach
aluminium milling line
By adding a wide variety of corner radii,
ITC is making the 3051 Series suitable for
multi-axis machining and the profile milling
of intricate features that are beyond the reach
of standard length end milling tools.
Furthermore, by adding corner radii to the
series; performance and tool life is extended
as the potential for edge chipping is
significantly reduced. Like the square-end
variant, the expanded radius line is offered
with an overall length from 75 to 150mm
with a length of cut from 15 to 80mm
depending upon diameter selection. The
correlation between the overall length and
the cut length are proportionate to maximise
rigidity and stability whilst minimising
vibration and chatter during heavy-duty fulldepth
machining applications. For further
information on how you can benefit from the
performance from this long-reach all rounder
from ITC, please visit www.itc-ltd.co.uk
