Holiday Greetings!
I hope this letter finds you and your family in good health and spirits during this joyous time of the year. The
St. Francis DeSales High School community has been blessed with a memorable start to the 2009-10 school
year. The diligence and creativity of our students and faculty has been substantiated by the quality of their
work. The level of dedication to scholastic pursuits has been fantastic and has resulted in 53% of the student
body achieving honor roll status. In addition, the students have demonstrated great commitment to their cocurricular
endeavors.
I believe the following items are worth noting: Our Theater Department had a very successful run of their fall
production of Robin Hood. The “Pride” of the Stallions, our band, dance team, cheerleaders, and flag corps
have contributed energy and pageantry to our autumn evenings. And finally, our fall athletic season provided
us with tremendous excitement and memorable accomplishments, beginning with our young women: The Li
sisters, Kim My and My Linh Li, who captured a Doubles State Title in Division II tennis; the volleyball team
who finished as District Semi-Finalist; the Lady Stallion soccer team who finished as District Runner-up; and
senior, Melissa Thompson, who qualified for her third straight State cross country meet.
The fall has proven to be equally exciting for our young men, beginning with the boys golf team who won a District crown and finished third in the
state; (the men were led by senior, Tyler Hohman, who finished as an individual State Runner-up); our men’s Soccer Program captured its fourth
State Championship, winning a thrilling 1-0 victory at Crew Stadium on Friday, November 13th. And finally, our football team captured a Regional
Championship by defeating our arch-rival Bishop Watterson on November 20th. As of the writing of this article the football team is busy in preparation
for a State Final appearance on December 4th.
While all of these accomplishments are deserving of recognition, I am even prouder of our young people and our community when I reflect on what
has been accomplished in the way of service. I believe it is important to remember that during the Advent and Christmas seasons, we are reminded
of our call to be a source of light and hope to those with whom we are blessed to interact.
The very essence of this call to serve is captured in the following words by our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI: “Joy is the true gift of Christmas,
not the expensive gifts that call for time and money. We can communicate this joy simply: with a smile, a kind gesture, a little help, forgiveness.
And the joy we give will certainly come back to us…Let us pray that this presence of the liberating joy of God shines forth in our lives.”
It is my sincere belief that this spirit of service has been clearly evident these past several weeks through the actions of those in the St. Francis
DeSales High School community. The outreach by our SFDHS family to those in need has been wonderful for us to witness through such projects
as: The St. Vincent DePaul’s Winter Clothing Drive, the Holiday Care Packages for Soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, our Canned Food Drive for
St. Stephen’s Community Center, and our annual Christmas-in-the Courtyard project that witnessed members of the current senior class providing a
Christmas experience for the boys and girls of St. Stephen’s Community Center.
In my estimation, each of these endeavors provided our young people with an opportunity to embrace the rich tradition of service associated with
our outstanding school. Moreover, we have all been graced by God to witness first hand the life-giving energy associated with serving others. And
while I am tremendously proud of what our community has accomplished to date, I am prayerful that we will carry the energy and good-will with
us throughout the coming year, and in so doing make our community and world a more compassionate and just place, and restore the light of hope
for those who have experienced darkness.
It is with this in mind that I would like to take this occasion to present my annual gifts to our St. Francis DeSales family:
• To our students the gifts of love, knowledge, compassion, health, and laughter to successfully deal with the challenges that life has to offer.
• To our faculty the gifts of love, patience, energy, and fulfillment to inspire our young people to realize the special gifts with which they have been blessed.
• To our administrative team the gifts of love, wisdom, courage and humor to provide leadership and balance as we move our outstanding school into a dynamic future.
• To our support personnel the gifts of love, health, success, and an understanding of the important role they play to make our school run so smoothly.
• To our alumni the gifts of love, health, success, and the understanding of the important role they played in forging the tradition of excellence associated with our school.
• To our former teachers and administrators the gifts of love, health, and grace in thanksgiving for their years of service to our community.
• To our feeder school teachers, clergy, and administrators the gifts of love, health, and appreciation for providing our students with a sturdy foundation upon which to build.
• To our departed loved ones the gift of ever-lasting love and the peace to know that we honor their memory each day through our prayerfulness and diligence.
• To our families--namely our parents, siblings, and grandparents the gifts of love, health, and spiritual strength to continue instilling the practical life lessons that we all need.
As we turn our attention to 2010 and the 50th Anniversary of this beautiful school, it is my humble request that you prayerfully consider supporting
our “Traditions that Last” annual drive. Through your continued generosity SFDHS will continue to provide a quality Catholic education
rooted in Faith, Family, and Tradition.
In closing, please be comforted in knowing that the students and staff of St. Francis DeSales H.S. pray for you daily. I humbly request that you
keep us in your prayers that we are blessed to continue our school’s mission to educate young people in the teachings of our Catholic faith.
Peace & God’s blessings for a healthy, happy 2010,
Volume 6, Issue 1
If you listen to the radio in Columbus – whether you are into Classic Rock, Alternative or
Talk Radio – you most likely have heard the voices of three of our alums. Born with the
gift of gab, Mark “Daddy Wags” Wagner ’71, Kelly Quinn ‘82 and Steve Rybak ’04 have
all made a name for themselves in the local radio scene. Rising when the rest of us are still
sound asleep, these three are on their way to their stations to co-host the Wags & Elliot
Morning Show on QFM 96 (Wagner), Morning Talk FM on 103.9 (Quinn) and the CD 101
Morning Show (Rybak). Although they all took a different path to the recording studio, they
each followed their dream to the jobs they love doing.
Wagner had his first taste of the limelight in eighth grade when his father enrolled him in
The Gabriel Richard Course, or as he puts it “the Church’s version of the Dale Carnegie
public speaking course,” which encouraged him to begin reading at Mass. Becoming
involved in Drama club at DeSales also “ramped up the ham factor.” But the deciding factor
that led him to a career in the media field was the summer he worked at the Quick-Crete
factory where “stacking 90 pound bags of cement convinced me that there must be an easier
way to make a living!” In 1978, he got his chance to hit the airwaves. He always knew
that he wanted to work at QFM 96, but didn’t quite know how to get his foot in the door.
At that time, a friend of his was a part owner of a car stereo business, and mentioned that
he wasn’t very happy with the radio spots that they were running. Wagner offered to help
write and voice the commercials as long as they recorded them at QFM 96.
After a year of showing up every Thursday morning to do a new spot at QFM
96, a weekend jock quit on short notice and the Program Director had to hire
someone quickly or work the shift himself. Thanks to his reliability and the
familiarity of his voice, Wagner got the job the next day.
Kelly Quinn, a journalism major in the advertising sequence at Ohio State,
realized one quarter before graduation that she “had no creative advertising
talent whatsoever and could never make a living at it.” She remembered
enjoying a news writing class taken during her junior year, so she started
looking around for a news department that would accept her as an intern…
quickly. Kelly was brought on as an intern in the newsroom at Sunny 95 in
January of 1988, which was the first time she had ever seen the inside of a
radio station. She fell in love with everything about it. Kelly graduated from
OSU in 1988, and in August of that same year, got “an actual paying job” at
92.3, a Top 40 station called 92X at the time. She has been in radio ever since.
For Steve Rybak, it has always been about opportunities. A grade school
classmate of his was the daughter of former Channel 10/Buckeye color
commentator and current ESPN sports anchor Mike Gleason. “I didn’t realize who he was
until I was older, but I remember very clearly seeing him, at age 6, call an OSU Basketball
game on TV and turning to my dad to ask, ‘Why does he look familiar?’” Steve recalls, “My
dad laughed and said, ‘You’re classmates with his daughter.’” From that moment on, Steve
was hooked. At DeSales that passion was cultivated by his original Journalism teacher,
Mrs. Reither. “She made Journalism exciting and let me explore a story idea of comparing
Television to Radio, which led to my first job in Radio.” His first job in radio was at Sunny
95, where he worked in the promotions department from May 2002-August 2005. But his
big break on air came in the form of an internship at CD 101, where he is currently a co-host
of the morning show.
They all agree that the perks – free concert tickets, the hours (if you are a morning person),
and meeting celebrities – are great, but as Kelly sums it up perfectly, “the best part of
the job is the people. Radio people are funny.” Wags, Kelly and Rybak get to spend their
workday talking, laughing, and listening to good music. You can’t beat that.

Most Memorable moments at
DeSales
We beat Cleveland St. Edwards twice
in football (junior and senior year) and
I passed Chemistry my junior year!
My senior year I was dragged, kicking
and screaming, into drama club, which
turned out to be a BLAST!
When I think back on my days at
DeSales, my fondest memories are not
of specific events, but of the people,
especially the girls I did gymnastics
with. The hours of practice, the meets,
the bonding and camaraderie: I loved
those girls and am so thankful to have
been a part of that.
That would hands down be when we (the
cross country team) made it to the State
Cross Country meet. Our team was the
first team in twenty-five years to make it
and the team enjoyed some continued
success after we graduated. It was great
to start a winning tradition and be a part
of something that remained after my
class had moved on to college.
Advice to students who aspire to
be On Air
They say that for most people, the fear of
speaking in public is worse than the fear of
dying. Overcome that fear and you will be
successful at whatever you choose to do.
My advice would be to get an internship
at a radio station. Get as much experience
as possible in each area of the
business. Meet people. Be persistent.
And, if possible, pursue a college degree
as a way to enrich yourself in a specific
field of interest.
Among the best advice I’ve been given is
don’t be afraid to hear “No,” because that
means that someone is listening. Live for
the moment and go for it. Don’t be afraid to
start at the bottom as an Intern and work
your way to the top. With hard work, it can
happen faster than you can ever imagine.
On August 4, 2009, St. Francis DeSales
High School gained a new member
to the SFD Alumni group. Through a
National program, veterans from World
War II, the Korean War and Vietnam
War who left high school to serve
our country are now able to obtain an
official diploma from a high school of
their choice. Mr. Robert Appell chose
St. Francis DeSales High School to
call his Alma Mater. In 1939, Robert
left high school during his junior year
to become a member of the Civilian
Conservation Corps. A few years later,
he decided to enlist with the Marines,
serving in World War II from 1942 to
1946. Mr. Appell joins his sons and
grandsons as proud alums of St. Francis
Fall Show Earns Rave
Reviews
A familiar tale came to life on the Little
Theatre stage this fall, full of action,
drama and laughter as the talented cast
of Robin Hood took audiences deep
into Sherwood Forest on an adventure
full of swashbuckling fun. The story
unfolded with Robin Hood (played
by senior Blake Spellacy) and his
love interest Marian Harper (played
by senior Jazmine Noble) proving
that good always prevails over evil.
Surprise performances by newcomers,
senior Richard Tynes (The Bishop of
Hereford) and senior Jimmy Kreuz (Guy
of Gisbourne) kept audiences laughing
with their comedic timing. The dueling
scenes, choreographed by Sergey
Earning College Credit In High School
Students Achieve High Scores on Advanced Placement Exams
Last May, 141 students at St. Francis DeSales High School took 231 AP exams in 13 subjects. Of the 231 exams taken, 67%
earned passing scores of 3 or above (colleges will award credit or allow students to test out of required classes with a passing
score of 3), and of the 67% cited above, 38% earned scores of 4 or 5 (students receive 3-6 semester hours of credit at most
U.S. colleges and universities). We congratulate 24 students from the Class of 2009 who earned AP awards for their test
FACULTY FOCUS: Gerri Hatch
Enter Chemistry Room 109
at DeSales High School and
two things will immediately
catch your eye. The enormous
“Period Table of the Elements”
wall poster is expected, but the
“Wall of Famous Chemistry
Students” is definitely worth a
closer look. Covering the poster
are the goggled, smiling faces of
many young men and women,
several holding metric beakers.
Happy chemistry students may
seem anomalous to some, but this
chemistry room is different. After
all, this is “The HAtCH,” as the
sign above the doors reads—the
word spelled using the appropriate elements from the Periodic
Table, cleverly identifying the teacher who shares her love of
science with her students every day: Mrs. Gerri Hatch.
Gerri Hatch’s journey into the field of education is as
interesting as her classroom. Born Geraldine Giordano, Gerri
grew up in “South Philly,” the place made legendary in the
“Rocky” movies. Her father, Gus, was a pediatrician who kept
his office on the first floor of the family’s three-story home in
the heart of the city. Gerri attended Notre Dame Academy,
an all-girls Catholic high school, not far from Dick Clark’s
famous “American Bandstand” broadcasts. “The nuns at
Notre Dame threatened immediate expulsion for any student
caught at a taping of the show,” remembers Gerri, who stayed
in Philadelphia to attend Rosemont College, the sister-school
of Villanova University, which was all-male at the time. It
wasn’t until graduate school at the sunny and coed University
of Florida that Gerri experienced what she calls a true “college
experience.” “It was the 70’s,” says Gerri, “and there were a
lot of big changes taking place.” It was at Florida that Gerri
shifted her focus from her undergraduate study of Biology to
Medical Microbiology and Immunology—the field in which
she would eventually earn her Master’s
Degree.
It was while working on her Master’s
thesis that Gerri sort of fell into teaching.
“I was at the right place at the right
time,” says Gerri, who grew to enjoy
presenting and discussing research papers
in her graduate “journal club” more than
researching cancer antibodies in mice
(not to mention that her entire rodent test
group died, forcing her to start
all over).
While finishing her research, she took her new found interest in
instruction to Oak Hall School in Gainesville, where she taught
science for three years. “I had never actually taught before and
surprisingly, I loved it,” says Gerri, who subsequently took
thirteen years off to stay at home and raise her children: Jessie,
Jamie, Dan, and Jenni. Following a family move to Columbus,
Gerri began to teach on a part-time basis at the Pontifical College
Josephinum and Columbus State Community College.
It was while teaching Chemistry at Columbus State that fellow
professor and Stallion supporter Sue Longenbaker told Gerri of
the full-time teaching opportunity available at St. Francis DeSales
High School. Gerri started at DeSales in 1997, and as the sign
above her door implies, has been an elemental part of our science
department ever since, creating our immensely successful AP
Chemistry Program. Presented with the DeSales Excellence in
Teaching Award in 2000, Gerri also received the Ohio News
Network (ONN) Teacher of the Month Award in March of 2008.
And although this college professor/high school science teacher
has witnessed huge improvements in the level of technology now
made available to students, including SmartBoards and computer
labs, she longs for a simpler time. “I just want a blackboard
again,” says Gerri, who Alumni remembers parents the pictured thrill of being with covered their
head to toe in chalk
graduate
dust after a
from
great class
the class
of drawing
of 2009.
compounds
and equations.
The blackboard is gone from her classroom, but the thrill Gerri
receives from teaching, especially from her AP class, is alive and
well. “The kids in this class are just excited about learning,” says
Gerri, “their enthusiasm is so high. . . they feed off of one another,
and I truly enjoy engaging them.” A picture of one of her more
memorable classes even sits atop her piano at home, much to the
chagrin of her daughter Jenni, who feels that her own likeness is
under-represented in comparison with Gerri’s students. Even so,
Gerri’s love of teaching has rubbed off on her kids—all of them,
except her son Dan, an architect, work in the field of education.
And while Gerri would serve as a great role model for anyone
looking to work in the teaching profession, she finds her greatest
inspiration in the life of her father, Dr. Gus Giordano, who,
sadly, passed away last summer.
According to Gerri, “He was
brilliant and humble, all at the same
time”—the same words that her
colleagues and students would say
accurately describe the teacher in
room 109.
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Stefanie Cochran
Roses flew through the air as Buckeye fans across the country celebrated
Ohio State’s victory over Iowa on November 14, locking up a Rose Bowl
berth. While internet sites were flooded with Scarlet and Gray supporters
looking for flights to Pasadena, one local fan and current Stallion sat back
and smiled. She already had her ticket to California.
Stefanie Cochran, a senior at DeSales, was born and raised in the
Buckeye State. Over the last four years, she has been performing with
the DeSales Marching Band as a member of the Flag Corps, with
Football Friday Nights as some of her favorite high school memories.
During this same timeframe, Stefanie has been practicing with another
area band. “I started volunteering at the Ohio State School for the
Blind (OSSB) when I was a freshman,” Stefanie explains. “The
following year my mom told me that the OSSB was going to form
a marching band, and they were looking for volunteers to assist the
blind and visually impaired band members.” Stefanie thought it would
be a good fit (and fun!) so she began practicing with the OSSB band twice a week. As a volunteer, Stefanie assists the students
by placing her hand on their back, guiding them through the field as they perform their routines. The group performs during the
halftime shows at the Ohio School for the Deaf’s football games and has worked with the OSU Marching Band. Together they
have marched in parades and appeared at the State House. They even do their own version of Script Ohio: a Braille Ohio!
Last year, exciting news came in the form of an invitation to march
in the Rose Bowl parade. The band, along with their volunteer
guides, have amped up their practices to get ready for the 5 mile
parade route in Pasadena. Stefanie will be marching with an 8 th
grader named Billy, who plays the trombone. “ I have met many
great people and am so glad that I have gotten the opportunity to
join the OSSB marching band on their journey to the Rose Bowl.”
Stefanie reminds our readers to “look for us on TV!”
St. Francis DeSales student-athletes shined this fall earning three CCL titles (Girls
Cross Country, Boys Soccer and Football), one MOGGL Runner Up (Girls Golf),
one District Runner-Up (Girls Soccer), two District Championships (Boys Golf and
Boys Soccer), two Regional Championships (Boys Soccer and Football), and two
State Championships (at time of print: Boys Soccer and Girls Tennis Doubles). SFD
also had two District qualifiers in golfers Taryn Tyler and Sarah Chapman, a State
Runner Up in golfer Tyler Hohman, and a state qualifier in Cross Country, runner
Melissa Thompson. At time of print, the Football team was preparing to play Cardinal
Mooney High School in the State Championship game.
After 27 years, a Tennis State title made it back to DeSales. Senior Kim My Li and
her sister, freshman My Linh, won the Division II Doubles State Championship by
defeating Bexley’s twosome 6-2, 6-7 (7-9), 6-2. The tournament originally scheduled
to be held at OSU was moved to Elysium Tennis Center due to weather. The change
in venue did not effect the sisters’ play as they expertly navigated through all four
rounds of the tournament with confidence.
During the 2009 Boys Soccer team’s tournament run, their first big challenge came
against Bexley in the State Semi-Finals—a rematch of last year’s District final. After
two scoreless overtimes, the Stallions defeated Bexley in a shoot-out, 4-3. They
took on Bay Village High School in the State Championship game held at Crew
Stadium. The team played brilliantly, with senior David Harper scoring the winning
goal to clinch the Division II title. Senior goalkeeper Chris Weisgarber served as the
backbone of a staunch defense which did not allow a goal during the Stallions’ entire
playoff run.
Dear Friends of St. Francis DeSales High School,
For half a century, St Francis DeSales High School has been educating
students in the spirit of St. Francis DeSales, who challenges us to “be who
we are, and be that well.”
We ask our entire community of alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends
to invest your resources in the 2009-2010 Traditions That Last Annual Fund.
Your contribution makes a difference in maintaining the tradition of
excellence that you have come to expect. Together we can build upon this
excellence today and tomorrow.
The cost of tuition only covers approximately 80% of the total cost of
attending St. Francis DeSales High School. Since we are not a cost-based
tuition school, we rely on the generosity of our benefactors to enable us to
keep tuition affordable for our families. We are aware that today’s
economic climate is challenging for everybody. It is due to these challenges
we are asking you to support our students. This annual fund must raise
$175,000. The annual fund provides the unrestricted dollars necessary to
cover the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a student’s education.
Your investment is a tax-deductable donation which assists in preserving the
financial well being of our school.
As you consider your donation to our Traditions That Last Annual Fund,
know that we can close this tuition gap and provide our students with a faithbased
education reflected in our core values of Faith, Family, and Tradition.
No gift is ever too small or too large. Your gift to our annual fund will have
an immediate impact on our students today and tomorrow.
Please use the enclosed envelope to send your check, pledge or credit card
information. You may also make an online contribution at
ALUMNI PROFILE: Byron Tuttle
In 1994, Mr. Bill Steller showed the 4th grade music class at St. James the Less Elementary School a video of the famous Irish
Step Dancing performance, Riverdance. Sitting in that class was a young boy named Byron Tuttle, who watched the video, had a
dream, and eventually became a star! Alumni Relations Director, Colleen Herr, had the opportunity to speak with Byron and hear
about his high school experience, his life in the world of Irish Dancing, and the important role his family has played in his career.
CH: What was high school like for you?
BT: “I was involved in a number of activities and sports. I
enjoyed all of the experiences, especially being in Theatre. I
thought my singing and acting skills were second to none-I
was a regular Leonardo DiCaprio (laughs), though I’m sure
Mrs. M. would tell you otherwise! I was lucky enough to be
in the DeSales Drama department with my cousin Mary. She
and I had a great time tearing up the place! The memories we
have from doing those productions are priceless. Heaven help
me if anyone gets a hold of those video tapes!”
CH: Outside of the theatre, did you ever dance at DeSales?
BT: “I danced for the first time, in front of my peers, at a
school talent show. It was great fun, and everyone seemed
to be very excited about it afterwards. I was thrilled when I
found out how supportive everyone was of my achievements
in Irish Dancing. It made me feel very good about myself.”
CH: It sounds like you had a great high school experience.
What do you like best about your Alma Mater?
BT: “I am terribly proud of DeSales. They are constantly
making strides toward success for young people. It is so
important that young people today have a sense of morals
and values, and that is why DeSales was a great boost for me
during those formative years. The encouragement from my
teachers was overwhelming. My time at DeSales was, for me,
one of the best times of my life!”
CH: When did you get your start in the world of
professional Irish dancing?
BT: “I was accepted into Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance
in the spring of 2001. I was a senior in high school at that
time, so I graduated early (to be able to attend rehearsals),
moved to London and began rehearsing in May of 2001. I
rehearsed for a month before embarking on a world tour with
the show.”
CH: What are some of your most memorable experiences
from being on tour?
BT: “I had the opportunity to meet Michael Jordan and
President Bush. I was thrilled to perform at the Kodak
Theatre (where the Oscars are held) in Los Angeles. Jack
Nicholson, Pamela Anderson Lee and Priscilla Presley were
all in the audience and I spent the whole time onstage trying
to spot them, and I finally did! I also performed at Madison
Square Garden in New York which was fantastic!”
CH: What are you involved in now?
BT: “I am proud to say that I have been a teacher of Irish
Dancing in England for two and a half years now. I run my
own Irish Dancing School in Birmingham, England, called
‘The Academy’ (www.theacademy-birmingham.co.uk). As a
teacher, I no longer compete, but I am lucky and blessed to be
doing something in life that I absolutely love!”
CH: Tell me a little bit about your students and the
Academy.
BT: “My pupils have won major championship titles such
as the British Nationals, Great Britain Championships, All
Scotland Championships, American National Championships,
and just this year, my school won the most coveted prize in
Irish Dancing: The World Championships—a title I won during
my own dancing career shortly after I finished my tour with
Lord of the Dance.”
CH: What role has your family played in your career?
BT: “As my family is of an Irish background, it was great to
take up Irish Dancing and carry on the Irish tradition. My
parents have been there for me through thick and thin. They
have supported me in all of my endeavors. I couldn’t possibly
have ended up where I am today without their guidance
and advice. They are both SO hardworking and dedicated.
They also taught me to be the very best I could be at school
and sport. From a young age, they instilled in me a very
competitive nature which I’ve used in many different facets to
achieve my goals. ‘Thanks Mom and Dad!’”
The Class of 1974 had a great time the weekend of July 24 reuniting with friends at Gordy’s Friday night and for
dinner and dancing at DeSales Saturday night. After not being allowed to use the courtyard their senior year in high
school, they were able to wander the courtyard, even with drinks in hand! DeSales would like to say a special THANK
YOU to the Class of ’74. They proudly donated $884 from their class reunion to the SFDHS scholarship fund. Pictured
below are members of the class of 1974 celebrating their 35-year reunion.
