POLAR
EXPLORATION
AT NORDIA HOUSE
The Vikings were famous for their spirit of
exploration and that tradition continued well
into the 19 TH and 20 TH centuries with voyages to
the Arctic and Antarctic. Our featured summer
exhibit, Norway and the United States: Partners
in the Polar Regions, comes to us via the
Norwegian Embassy from the Fram Museum in
Oslo, Norway. This informational exhibit traces
the history of efforts by Norway and the United
States to conquer the unknown in the harsh,
mysterious polar regions.
Names like Amundsen, Nansen, Perry, Larsen,
and Byrd have earned the status of both hero
and legend, and still inspire awe in those
who hear their stories. When we look closer
into the history of polar expeditions, there are
numerous examples of how Norwegians and
Americans worked together through hardship
and frost to discover new land and lay the
foundation for polar science. This exhibit runs
from June 15 to September 14 and will be
accompanied by other activities including
a lecture about polar bears by Don Moore,
Executive Director of the Oregon Zoo; both
documentary and feature films; and special
receptions. Partners in the Polar Regions is
sponsored by Fjällräven, a Swedish company
that specializes in sustainable outdoor gear.
Fjällräven also sponsors its own Arctic trek
and you might be inspired to take part in their
contest to join in the adventure.
ESSAY CONTEST
Ever imagine yourself exploring the far north
of our planet like adventurers of the past?
What about taking part in the Iditarod sled
race? Well, every year, Fjällräven (sponsor of
our Polar exhibit) holds a contest to choose
participants from around the world to take
part in their dogsled trek. Fjällräven provides
the winners with all the cold weather gear
needed, plus the dog sleds, mushers and
equipment necessary. All you need to
bring is your spirit of adventure. You can
find our more about Fjällräven Polar during
the exhibit, Norway and the United States:
DOG DAYS OF
SUMMER AT
NORDIA HOUSE
SUMMER DINNERS,
NORDIC WINE TASTINGS,
YAPPY HOUR, AND MUCH MORE!
The long days of summer are the
perfect time in the Nordic countries
to gather with friends for food, drink,
and great company. We bring that spirit of
community to Nordia House as we host three
special dinners, four wine tastings, one aquavit
tasting, and a series of Yappy Hours (that’s
right—bring your pups for outdoor seating).
Plan now to make your summer a Nordic one!
Our Summer Dinner Series in partnership with
Broder Söder kicks off with a Midsommar
Dinner on June 17 from 6:00 - 9:00 PM, with
salmon, Swedish meatballs, roasted potatoes,
and more! Next, enjoy a menu inspired by
Peter Bro’s memories of Swedish summertime
crawfish dinners, complete with strawberry
shortcake, on July 22. Last but not least, our
Pickled Herring Dinner returns on August 26,
where you'll have pickled herring like never
before.
We will also have special summer Wine and
Spirits Tastings from June through August. Kick
off this series with a special aquavit tasting
on June 28 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM, courtesy
of our friends at House Spirits Distillery. A
variety of aquavits will be paired with openfaced
sandwiches to show off the unique
characteristics and flavors of each. Our
wine tastings will take place every other
Wednesday, 6:00 - 8:00 PM. They will include
some of our great Nordic wineries from the
region: Bergström Wines (Swedish) on July
12, Björnson Vineyard (Icelandic) on July 26;
Fullerton Wines (Danish & Swedish) on August
9, and Johan Vineyards (Norwegian) on
August 23.
Page 3
Like to socialize when you hit hump
day but don’t like missing time with
your pooch? Combine the two here
at Nordia House as we join with Broder
Söder for our inaugural Yappy Hours:
July 5, July 19, August 2, and August
16 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM. Both indoor
and outdoor seating (four-legged
friends outdoors only) will be available,
with Broder Söder staying open late
to provide liquid libations from their
summer drink menu, as well as a light
bar menu for snacking. A dog-walking
trail will be marked, as well as a fenced
area for pooch play. We are pleased
to welcome local animal rescue
organizations to each Yappy Hour to
share more about what they do. (Wellsocialized
dogs only and no aggressive
breeds please). •
SOFIA TALVIK
“THERE IS A CONSISTENCY TO THE STRONG SONGWRITING
AND SWEET MELODIES THROUGHOUT." THE TELEGRAPH, 2016
Unmistakenly Nordic, Sofia Talvik focuses her unique talents on the
American tradition of the singer/songwriter. With six albums to her
credit and international recognition for her abilities, we are pleased
to bring this outstanding talent to Nordia House for the first time.
Sofia’s debut album Blue Moon was released in 2005 to much critical
acclaim, followed by Street of Dreams in 2007, which features a duet
with indie pop icon Bernard Butler, released on her then newly formed record
label Makaki Music. Continuing a steady pace of releasing albums Sofia
released her album Jonestown in 2008, and was the first Swedish female artist
to play the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago that same year.
Growing up in Sweden her music has always had a special tint from her
Scandinavian heritage, but her time spent roadtripping through the USA in an
RV has moved her closer to the Americana tradition. Her adventures on the
road spurred feelings of triumph and joy, but also self-doubt and defeat—all
of which found their way into the songs of her current album Big Sky Country,
from 2015. This album contains a cover of “Starwalker” by Buffy Sainte-Marie.
This concert, co-sponsored by New Sweden, is on Friday, September 22 at
7:30 PM. Tickets are $15 for NNW and New Sweden members; and $20
for non-members.They may be purchased online at www.scanheritage.org/
