“Autism Eats” Comes to Medway
By J.D. O’Gara
If you’re a parent who’s experienced
the joy of a child
melting down in a public place,
you may feel it’s not an experience
you’re willing to repeat.
For many parents with children
who have autism, this experience
has happened so often that they
avoid taking their families out
to eat, an experience many miss
having. “Autism Eats” is a Massachusetts
based nonprofit that
aims to solve this dilemma. The
group organizes autism-friendly
dinners at locations throughout
the state. Recently, on May
23rd, the group got together for
a great dinner at Restaurant 45,
in Medway. The family-friendly
night, which took place right in
the general restaurant area of the
restaurant rather than in a banquet
hall, for a feel typical of a
family night out, even included a
visit from New England Revolution’s
mascot, Slyde.
Lenard Zohn is one of the
founders of Autism Eats.
“I am an ‘autism father,’” says
Zohn. “We were always a family
who loved going out to dinner,
being with friends, being with
community, but my son Adin,
who is now 12, did not share
this love as much as we did. For
people with autism, a restaurant
can exasperate a lot of issues,
with fluorescent lighting, loud
music, and the kids don’t want to
wait, don’t want to be seated, and
there may not be any food the
On Tuesday, May 23, Autism Eats, a group that organizes autismfriendly
restaurant experiences for families, enjoyed a dinner out at
Restaurant 45, complete with the New England Revolution’s mascot,
Slyde.
like. He would flop on the floor,
run around or play his iPad too
loudly. We got to the point where
any enjoyment we had going out
to dinner was (gone) due to the
stress we felt.”
The Zohns, who also have
a now 14-year-old daughter,
started going out less and less.
“My wife, Delphine, said,
‘We’re not the only autism family
out there and not the only family
that misses something typical and
enjoyable.’ We knew what things
didn’t work (at a restaurant), and
we felt if we could take what
didn’t work and do the opposite
and modify it, we could make
what did work (for autism families).”
In February of 2013, Autism
Eats held its first dinner in the
Zohn’s community of Andover.
“We met in our school and
told them what we were doing,
and we found a local restaurant
I thought would fit the bill in
terms of layout and attitude of
the management,” says Zohn.
“We weren’t really sure how
many people were going to show
up. We estimated 30 people, but
by the time of the event, we had
110 people join us from all over
the state, some driving up to two
hours each way, and they gave
us the whole restaurant. And it
was fantastic; everyone just had a
great time, including us.”
A night out with Autism Eats
will provide a nonjudgmental
environment. All behaviors, says
Zohn, are welcome.
“You’re amongst people and
families that are all experiencing
the same things. You don’t have
to say anything or apologize. It’s
an opportunity to relax, enjoy
and meet some other people, and
put the Autism on the shelf for a
couple of hours.”
Zohn says autistic children
who’ve attended have been
calmer than he have imagined.
“There have been no real
meltdowns,” he says, “Of course,
kids don’t necessarily sit the
whole night, but in a lot of ways,
it looks typical of a whole lot of
families.”
ated with a national group, Action
Together Network (ATN). According
to that group’s web site, ATN
is “a volunteer-run support and
resource provider for the growing
resistance movement in the United
States. “
Expecting to find the event still
going on, Action Together demonstrators,
about 15 in total, at least
one from as far away as Rehoboth,
assembled in front of the VFW
around 6:30 PM, occasionally
chanting slogans such as “Immigrants
are welcome here.” People
who were unaware of the cancellation,
arrived and congregated in
the parking log. One individual,
who declined to provide his name,
walked up and tried the door of
the building, only to be told of the
cancellation. “I’m an immigrant
myself and I was really looking forward
to hearing what the speaker
had to say,” he explained. “It is too
bad people aren’t more tolerant, I
hope it is rescheduled,” he added.
It is unclear whether that will
happen. “We wanted to shut it
down; we don’t want hate and
we don’t want our kids exposed
to this,” said Kim Thibeault from
Medway, who said she helped organize
the demonstration. “It’s not
a political thing of Democrats or
Republicans, we just want to stop
hate,” she added. Stephanie Roberts,
also from Medway, agreed.
“CIS is a hate group; their blogs
try to make immigrants look like
criminals,” she said.
According to the CIS web site,
the organization is run by “a diverse
board of directors that has
included active and retired university
professors, civil rights leaders,
and former government officials,”
with research funded by contributions
from individuals, government
agencies such as the U.S. Census
Bureau and Justice Department,
and foundations. Vaughan, a local
resident, has testified before Congress
and the National Press Club
and has made frequent appearances
on local and national news
outlets, including both MSNBC
and Fox News. She is a former
member of the State Department
diplomatic corps.
However, according to Roberts,
the Southern Poverty Law Center,
a non-profit with an endowment
of more than $300 million that
focuses on civil rights, has determined
that CIS is one of a number
of groups founded by a “white
nationalist” that believes in genetics
and “their most quiet group” is
CIS. That’s the point of my sign,
she explained, pointing to a placard
that read: “Your fancy words
don’t fool me CIS you’re spewing
hate.” But the SPLC is not without
some critics of its own. Writing
in the Weekly Standard in 2014,
Charlotte Allen noted, “ the SPLC
started out fighting legal battles
against lingering segregation in
the South. More recently—and
more lucratively, its critics say—it
has transformed itself into an allpurpose
antihate crusader, labeling
1,007 different organizations
across America at last count as
“anti-gay,” “white nationalist,”
“anti-Muslim,” “anti-immigrant,”
or just plain “hateful…”
“It is a missed opportunity for
area residents,” said Gianotti.
“There has been a lot of miscommunication
across the Internet
and this was a chance for people
to hear and have a dialog with a
leading expert on immigration
policy. Instead of just picking up
headlines, they would have had a
chance to dig deep and ask questions.
We just wanted an open and
respectful dialog,” he said.
Gianotti said he hopes the
event will be rescheduled. “This
has gone way beyond the issue of
immigration, this is now about the
right to free speech and assembly,”
he said. “The night of the event
and over the next two days, I had
dozens of calls asking what had
happened and wanting to know
when it would be rescheduled,” he
added.
Milford, MA. —WMRC-
First Class Radio has just
launched a new FM radio station,
My FM 101.3, to serve
the Greater Milford area. The
FM frequency will provide a
stronger signal, larger coverage
area, and will remain at full
power throughout the evening
and overnight. The multimedia
company will be re-branded as
My FM Media. It will include
radio stations MyFM 101.3 and
WMRC 1490 AM; programming
website www.myfm1013.
com, marketing website at www.
MyFMMedia.com; and mobile
device app “MyFM 101.3 Live”
for live streaming worldwide.
“Traditional radio is as strong
as ever, with a weekly reach of
93%, and with these new media
platforms, we can inform, engage,
and entertain more people
than ever before, more often
than ever before and in more
ways than ever before” said President
Tom McAuliffe II. “We
understand that people expect
to access what they want, where
they want, when they want it.
The new FM radio station and
mobile device app allow us to
continue to serve our region in
today’s rapidly changing world.”
WMRC has long been known
for its commitment to the community.
From covering breaking
news and weather, to tirelessly
fundraising for local charities
and organizations, the station
has been recognized for its commitment
by winning Station of
the Year in Massachusetts in
three of the last five years from
the Massachusetts Broadcasters
Association. “We recognize the
responsibility and embrace the
opportunity we have as a local
broadcaster, and we’re grateful
to leverage the power of localism
to make a difference in the communities
we serve. Our new FM
signal will only enhance this effort.”
said McAuliffe II.
Established in 1956, WMRC-
First Class Radio is one of the
oldest locally owned and operated
broadcast stations in Massachusetts.
The company was
purchased in 1990 by Tom
McAuliffe, Sr. who was committed
to the philosophy that a
strong local radio station makes
a strong connection to the community.
His son, Tom McAuliffe
II, took over as President in 2008
making the radio station the area’s
first choice for local news,
weather, sports, traffic and community
events.
AUTISM
continued from page 3
understand what the group is trying
to do. “We want them to be
excited about it, to feel they have
an opportunity to give back to
the community and create a fun
night for all of us. And we bring
them business on a slow night.”
“I think it’s a wonderful organization,”
says Dawn Lloyd,
mother of three from Franklin
who chose Restaurant 45 for the
May dinner, the second one she’s
organized for the group. “It can
be difficult when you have a child
that’s on the spectrum, particularly
when you have to go into
public places. They may not behave
in a manner other patrons
find acceptable. In my household,
that may look like loud outbursts
or not staying seated or keeping
an appropriate volume of voice,
but autism looks different for everyone.
Going to an Autism Eats
dinner literally feels like going to
a restaurant and takes the weight
New England
off our shoulders.”
Lloyd, who has two children
on the spectrum, adds, “I can
breathe. I don’t have to anticipate
every move they are going
to make, when are they going to
yell, are there going to be tomato
chunks on the pizza, is it going to
be stressful? And you don’t have
to wait, which can literally be the
hardest part.” (Autism Eats dinners
are served buffet-style.)
In addition, the Zohns hand
out a sensory toy at each dinner
for every child, not just children
on the spectrum, and children
are free to get up and leave the
table when they’re done, she says.
“It’s really pretty awesome,” she
says.
Since that first dinner, Autism
Eats has held 35 dinners in 12
states.
“We’re thrilled with the success
of it,” says Zohn. “We’re
adding a new community and
new states almost monthly.”
Celebrating Arbor Day at Clyde Brown Elementary
Local tree companies, Harrison
McPhee, Inc. (HMI) and
ArborOne, Inc. teamed up to
celebrate Arbor Day with 3rd
grade students at Clyde Brown
Elementary School in Millis.
Students participated in interactive
learning stations that
included climbing demonstrations,
tree biology, landscape
design, planting techniques, and
gypsy moth identification. “We
are passionate about what we do,
and we want to instill that love of
the outdoors in our communities’
youth. Celebrating Arbor Day
with them is one way to demonstrate
how that love translated
into a rewarding career path for
each of our team members”, said
Scott McPhee, MCA of Harrison
McPhee, Inc..
“I loved how fast the arborist
could climb into the tree without
even touching a branch. He
wrapped his foot around the rope
and just zipped up the tree like
he was in the circus!” said one
excited student who had never
seen the art of foot locking - an
original technique for climbers.
Students then had the chance
to try their hand at holding their
weight on the rope, to see just
how challenging it is to be an Industrial
Athlete.
If climbing or biology didn’t
appeal to someone, there’s a good
chance that the landscape design
challenge did. Karen Kerr, the
HMI landscape designer, presented
a crash course in how she
chooses and arranges plants on a
property. Each student was given
a sketch of the HMI building
and was challenged to come up
with a design. HMI is going to
choose a winner, who will work
with Karen to finalize the HMI
landscape. And since the building
is right across from The Black
Cow on Main Street, the winner
just might be treated to an ice
cream, too!
To accommodate the immersion
classes, one learning station
was presented entirely in Spanish,
and focused on specialized
safety gear for arborists. The students
walked away with a whole
new list of vocabulary words that
could serve as the basis for an upcoming
ecology test!
Activities concluded with a
brief talk about the history of
Arbor Day, white pine saplings
to plant with their families, and
their own Arbor Day t-shirt.
“We are thrilled that these two
local companies took the time to
share the day with us. The students
learned so much about the
ways they can contribute to the
growing needs of our planet.”
stated Mrs. Mellin, 3rd grade
teacher and avid supporter of
environmental awareness. “We
would love to make this visit part
The Lanterns at Warren Woods
Where contemporary living meets style and convenience
By Deborah Burke Henderson,
Contributing Writer
Where does desirable singlefamily
home living meet the
convenience of condominium
ownership? They meet at The
Lanterns at Warren Woods, Ashland’s
most vibrant 55+ residential
living environment nestled
alongside 40 acres of beautiful,
protected open space and across
from the expansive Ashland Reservoir
and the 120-acre Warren
Woods on Chestnut Street.
Whether you’re an empty
nester, single professional or
someone seeking the enjoyment
of retirement years, treat yourself
to a tour of the three village
home concepts at Five Fern
Crossing that are being developed
by The Green Company.
“The Lanterns is the only 55
plus condominium community
in Metrowest with 100 percent
detached homes,” Sales Director
Judy Jennings said. “These 93
homes will have first floor masters,
front porches and rear decks
or patios, and a beautiful central
meeting house and outdoor pool
are slated for construction this
summer.”
“We try to make things as
easy as possible for the home
buyer,” Dominique Sampson,
vice president of sales and marketing,
added. “We walk through
the homes room by room so the
owner-to-be can decide everything
from the finish and height
of the kitchen cabinets to carpeting
style and color to standard or
upgraded appliances. Judy has
a long checklist of items she reviews
with each buyer to ensure
their new home is personalized
just for them.”
Prospective buyers meet with
home coordinator, Joan Karol,
three or four times for a half-day
each to select the flooring, cabinetry,
countertops, appliances
and faucets for their new home.
The Green Company is working
with top-notch industry leaders
General Electric, Kohler and
Mohawk, and buyers are encouraged
to visit the area stonework
vendor to sign off on their granite
slabs prior to installation.
Currently, The Green Company
is offering a $20,000 personalization
allowance for each
buyer. If the home is finished,
the allowance may be put toward
final items the owner wants
to select to further enhance their
future home.
“We’ll always offer some type
of personalization account,”
Sampson added, “but there’s no
guarantee about timing for the
current offer, so we encourage
folks to come and visit The Lanterns
to make a more informed
decision as to whether this is
the right living environment for
them.”
According to Sampson, initial
customer feedback during early
tours was taken to heart about
the largest model’s footprint. A
few key changes are now being
incorporated at Village 3 to provide
an even more spacious and
airier feel to the open-concept
living area.
Since the homes are built on
three residence styles offers additional
as another room or left as is
for storage space which can be
heated or air conditioned, if
desired. The Village 3 model,
for example, has an extra 500
square feet upstairs. Although
this now serves as the development
company’s conference
room, it gives any buyer a good
used.
Macular Degeneration Supplements
By Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.,
Milford Franklin Eye Center
Age-related macular degeneration
(AMD) is a deterioration or
breakdown of the eye’s macula.
The macula is a small area in the
retina that is responsible for your
central vision, allowing you to see
fine details clearly. There are two
main types of age-related macular
degeneration: The “dry”
form of macular degeneration
is characterized by the presence
of yellow deposits, called drusen,
in the macula. The “wet” form
is caused by the growth of abnormal
blood vessels from the
choroid underneath the macula.
Those can leak blood and fluid
into the retina, causing distortion
of vision.
If you have an advanced form
of macular degeneration, you
are probably taking vitamins and
antioxidants supplements to help
slow down the progression of
this disease. More than a decade
after the first Age Related Eye
Disease Study (AREDS) showed
that taking daily high doses of
vitamins C and E, beta-carotene,
zinc and copper can slow down
the progress of AMD, a second
study (AREDS 2) has revealed
that adding certain antioxidants
to the original formula does not
provide any extra benefit to patients.
Advanced AMD can lead to
significant vision loss, and in the
United States it is the leading
cause of blindness. About 2 million
Americans have advanced
AMD; another 8 million are at
risk.
The first AREDS study was
conducted by the National
Eye Institute and concluded in
2001. It showed that the original
AREDS formula can reduce patients’
risk of the advanced form
of AMD by about 25%. The
formula helps protect people’s
central vision, which is needed
for reading, driving, recognizing
faces and other daily activities.
AREDS 2, which concluded
in 2011, tested several antioxidant
nutrients that earlier
research had suggested might
protect the eyes: lutein, zeaxanthin,
and omega-3 fatty acids.
Omega-3 fatty acids are produced
by plants and are present
in oily fish such as salmon. Lutein
and zeaxanthin are carotenoids,
a class of plant-derived vitamins
that also includes beta-carotene,
and are present in leafy green
vegetables. The body uses these
nutrients to maintain the health
of the retina, the part of the eye
that can be damaged by AMD.
Participants in AREDS2 were
assigned to take one of four different
AREDS formulas daily for
five years.
The AREDS 2 research team
did find that two patient subgroups
benefited from taking
variants of the original AREDS
formula. The risk of developing
advanced AMD was reduced by
about 18% in study participants
who took the variant that included
lutein and zeaxanthin but
no beta-carotene, compared with
participants who took the variant
that had beta-carotene but no
lutein or zeaxanthin. And those
participants whose diets were low
in lutein and zeaxanthin at the
start of the study, but who took
a variant with lutein and zeaxanthin
during the study, were
about 25% less likely to develop
advanced AMD, compared with
similar participants who did not
take lutein and zeaxanthin.
The researchers say that removing
beta-carotene from the
AREDS formula and adding lutein
and zeaxanthin will result in
a single formula that is safe and
effective for all AMD patients.
Until now, people who were current
or former smokers could
only use a formula that excluded
beta-carotene, because it had
been linked to risk of lung cancer
for these patients. About half
of AREDS 2 participants were
former smokers.
Another recent AREDS report
showed that the benefits of
taking the AREDS formula appear
to be long-lasting. Participants
in the first AREDS study
who took the original formula
daily for five years continue to
enjoy a 25 percent lower risk
of developing advanced AMD.
Most report that they are still taking
the supplement.
How about if I do not have
AMD or an early stage of this
disease? Should I take these
supplements anyway? There’s
no evidence the supplements
help the vision of healthy adults
or people with earlier stages of
AMD. The best advice for most
MARKERSPACE
continued from page 13
Among the offerings of the
Medway Makerspace:
• A green screen, television
and lighting to go with green
screen and Medway Cable
Access will be donating cameras
when they get their new
cameras.
• Knitting machine: donated
by one of the librarians.
• Several sewing machines,
with sewing tools such as
scissors, an iron, two ironing
boards and a whole wall of
clean, donated material to
use.
• A 3D printer
• A Converter for transferring
slides, photos and negatives
into digital format
• A bigger photo scanner
• Two converters for transferring
VHS to DVD
• A number of workstations
that have such software as
CAD, Adobe Acrobat Pro,
Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop,
Final Cut Pro, Garage
Band, Logic Pro X,
Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk
R, to name a few
• Tools, such as soldering
irons, electronics items, two
regulated power suppliers, a
sander, hammer, screwdrivers,
drills and more
• An incubator and a heating
plate that 4H and others
used to observe hatching
eggs and subsequent baby
chicks. In fact, the Embryology
Club will start up again
on June 8th, a 4H impact
club in which anyone can
join in the fun.
“The town of Medway gave
$50K to do the construction of
the room, and then the Medway
Cable Access donated the tech
side,” says Busa. The craft features,
she says, were all donated
by patrons of the library, and the
Friends of Medway Library sets
aside a block of money each year
to help pay for supplies. A great
big help, says Busa, was Medway
DPS.
“The DPS was great. They
had some fantastic ideas,” says
Perkins.
“(Medway DPS) built this
place. They owned it, gave us
some great suggestions. They
really felt like it was their baby.
They still do,” says Busa. “They
come in here and they’re always
painting something or improving
something.”
Overall, the Makerspace was
quite a feat, says Perkins. The
end result, she says, fits “right in
with our mission of providing educational
opportunities and new
and creative options for people to
use and things to learn about. It
allows people to come together,
so it’s a nice extension. It’s not
separate from our library, but an
important part.”
beautiful and iconic part of campus.
The keynote address was provided by Dean College
never waiver from their dreams. “I hope you will take the insights,
experiences, relationships and tools gained here – your can-do attitude
and strong work ethic – in effect, your personal definition
of The Dean Difference – to reach your dreams and, as Bulldogs,
never settle and never lose sight of those dreams.” She reminded
students that, “The Dean Difference doesn’t end as you exit with
your diploma and begin your next chapter. I ask that you nurture
that Difference.”
Medway Residents Solid Waste & Recycling Service Changes Beginning July 1, 2017
In an effort to avoid significant cost increases in our solid waste program
beginning July 1st, the Town has developed the following changes
to the program. These changes are developed with our residential
customers in mind, specifically holding our program fee and yellow bag
costs steady (no increases) again into Fiscal Year 2018.
SPECIAL ITEMS (also known as “White Goods”)
Early estimates of the special items program for Fiscal Year 2018
indicated a cost increase to the Town in excess of $95,000. This estimate
was based upon the over utilization of the original intent of the Special
Items program in recent years and the disproportionate rate of usage
as compared to other communities. However, the Board of Selectmen
remains committed to keeping a program in place where the special
items listed below can still be collected curbside, but with minor
changes made effective July 1st. Only those special Items that listed
below are allowed under this program:
• Refrigerator • Dryer
• Dishwasher
• Compactor
• Stove
• Air Conditioner
• Washing Machine • Water Heater
Effective July 1st, residential curbside customers will be permitted to
request pickups of any of these Special Items up to four (4) times per
year subject to a maximum of eight (8) items per year.
PLEASE NOTE that the changes to Special Item pick-ups do not affect
regular bulk trash items such as furniture, mattresses, rugs, etc. You
may continue to leave one bulk trash item with your yellow bag(s) per
week free of charge.
TELEVISIONS, MONITORS, & LARGE METAL ITEMS
Per State Law, televisions, computer monitors, and large metal items
cannot be disposed of as trash. Beginning July 1st, the Recycling Center
will feature an additional drop off site for televisions and monitors,
again, free of charge. A metal dumpster is also available for large metal
items at no cost. All other electronic items and small appliances may be
disposed of in your yellow bags.
BLUE RECYCLE CARTS
The cost to Medway to service each blue recycle cart is approximately
$84 per year, per cart, whether or not it is fully used each week. Our
review indicates that very few households actually use more than
one blue recycle cart on a regular basis. As such, and in an effort to
keep costs in line for the vast majority of our customers, the Town will
begin to recover a portion of the annual blue recycle cart costs for all
additional carts beyond the one free cart per household. Effective July
1st, that charge for additional recycle carts will be $50 per cart per year.
If you wish to discontinue your use of additional recycle carts, please
contact our DPS Office and it/they will be retrieved from you.
Medway Boy Scouts
Summer Food Drive June 17
By J.D. O’Gara
Medway Boy Scout Troop
#367 will be holding its “Scouting
for Food - Summer Stock-
Up!” food drive on Saturday,
June 17, from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. at
Shaw’s in Medway. The drive
will benefit the Medway Village
Food pantry supporting local
families & individuals in need.
While food drives are common in
the fall and around the holidays,
this will be the first of its kind to
stock up the pantry for the lean
summer months when many donors
are away.
“We have always talked about
how donations drop off at the
food pantry during the summer
months, yet the needs of families
and individuals utilizing the
pantry stay the same. In some
instances, families face an even
greater challenge during the
summer months without the
benefit of school lunches. We decided
to raise awareness & help
the food pantry stock-up before
the summer,” says Sharon Ross,
Boy Scout Troop 367 volunteer.
Medway Cub Scout Pack
#748 has been holding an annual
“Scouting for Food!” in
November for the last six years
at Shaw’s. Boy Scout Troop
#367 has always assisted with
that event and volunteered at the
food pantry’s Thanksgiving and
Christmas distributions. This
is the first year that Boy Scout
Troop #367 will hold a “Summer
Stock-Up” food drive, an
event it hopes to continue each
year.
“Medway has always been
such an amazing community
donating over 2,000 items at the
holiday drives, so we hope to
replicate this on June 17th!” says
Ross.
grades 5-12.
This summer, when needy families have the additional challenge of no
school lunch, Medway Boy Scout Troop 367 will try to stock Medway
Village Food Pantry’s shelves for the summer with a food drive on June
Millis LEO Alyssa Smith Named
Massachusetts LEO of the Year
By J.D. O’Gara
On May 6th, Millis High
School junior Alyssa Smith was
named Massachusetts LEO of
the Year.
“Our district of LEOs and
Lions consists of a number of
towns,” says Mark Caulfield,
member of the Millis Lions
Club, Millis High School teacher
and advisor to the Millis High
School LEOs. “I chose to nominate
Allie, just because of all the
service she does. She volunteers
for just about everything,” says
Caulfield, who describes the Millis
LEOs, who number about 70
students, as still “in its infancy” in
its third year.
The LEOS club gives the kids
the opportunity to work together
with Lions and other adults in
their community to give back to
their community in which they’ve
grown up,” says Debbie Hayes,
of the Millis Lions Club. “When
we first started this program, our
hope was we were going to get 20
kids in the high school to join. We
were thrilled to get over 50. You
have an amazing group of kids
working with an amazing group
of adults giving everything they
have back to the community.”
The term LEO is an acronym
for “Leadership, Opportunity
and Excellence.” The Millis
group will celebrate three years
in December. Hayes says the
LEOS program is designed to
teach leadership, public speaking,
organizational and financial
skills.
“In truth, the LEOS is supposed
to be a conduit for the
Lions Club,” says Hayes. Hopes
are that these young volunteers
will take enough from their experience
of giving back to want
to continue that into adulthood.
“They gain this great sense of
self-esteem, because they’re
heading projects and gaining
leadership skills they can use
when they go to college. Now
you’re talking about future leaders
in your community.”
“It has been great for our
school,” says Caulfield. “We can
always do more, and I think, as
a club, we’re trying to come up
with new ideas and different
ways the kids can volunteer in the
community. The kids are eager to
participate, both with their own
events, as well as those for the
Millis Recreation Department or
the Lions Club.”
Some of the events the LEOs
have worked on include an annual
senior citizens’ dinner,
hosted by the Lions, a Trickor-Treat-So-Families-Can-Eat
event, babysitting for the Clyde
Brown back-to-school 5K, setting
up for the Warren Jordan Scholarship
auction, helping the Lions
raise money for the Fisher House
with a field of flags, and working
on a Lions centennial legacy
project of revamping the animal
shelter at the Millis Transfer Station,
an event that took place on
May 20th.
“I found it really eye opening,
all the things we can do to help
the community,” says Smith, who
is impressed by how far the teens’
help goes and by the appreciation
she feels from the community.
She was particularly struck, she
says, when she helped work on
a holiday brunch for Lions Club
members who are senior citizens.
“They tell us stories,” says
Smith, the current LEOs Vice
Secretary, “about when they were
younger and how they wanted to
participate in the community.
Their stories are the same as
ours, about how the things we do
go so far, and how it’s so important
that the younger generations
come up. All the appreciation
that people give you is so inspiring.
You don’t realize how much
people need it until you actually
help out.”
Tri-County Awarded Grant from
Silvio Cella Family Foundation
Tri-County Regional Vocational
Technical High School
has been chosen as one of four
regional 2017 recipients of the
Silvio Cella Family Foundation
grant. The grant program
provides high school football
teams in Massachusetts funding
to help improve playing conditions,
increase player safety and
participation, purchase needed
equipment, and build teamwork,
pride and confidence.
Annually, four high school
football programs are selected
to each receive a $3,000 grant to
be used to support their football
programs, per MIAA (Massachusetts
Interscholastic Athletic
Association) guidelines. Three
Tri-County Football team players,
Juniors Robert Fryar and
William Silver both of Plainville
and Zack Spencer of Walpole,
as well as Head Coach Anthony
Mazzola, were presented with
the award. Other 2017 recipients
of the Silvio Cella Family Foundation
grants included Tech Boston
Academy, Worcester North
High and Holyoke High School.
“The Silvio Cella Family
Foundation Grant awarded to
Tri-County’s football program
will provide us with updated
equipment that will benefit our
athletes from a teaching and
safety standpoint by improving
proper tackling and blocking
techniques. These techniques will
help reduce and hopefully prevent
head and neck injuries and
specifically concussions, said Tri-
County Head Coach Anthony
Mazzola. “We are so grateful to
be a recipient of this grant which
will benefit our players and program
immensely.”
“This much-needed grant
money will help these football
programs to improve player
safety and upgrade facilities and
equipment, and build a sense
of teamwork and community
in these schools,” said Michael
Cella, president, Silvio Cella
Family Foundation. “We are
honored to carry on my Dad’s
legacy and support high school
football in Massachusetts.”
Millis Cultural
Council Seeks
Input from Millis
Residents
Every 3 years the Millis Cultural Council (MCC)
surveys the community to assess where are our greatest
needs in arts and cultural activities in Millis. Because
council members are responsible for distributing public
dollars, the MCC needs to solicit and collect local
public opinion about how to best distribute funds. The
Millis Cultural Council receive more requests than can
be funded, and strong council priorities based on community
input can help guide grant making decisions.
Knowledge of resources, interests, and needs can help
us make difficult decisions and encourage communityresponsive
proposals.
Please click the link below by June 10th and take a
few minutes to answer a simple 5-question survey at SurveyMonkey
to help us with our funding priorities in the
coming year. Thank you!
8th Annual Massachusetts
Walking Tour Prepares for 11-Day
Blackstone Valley Trek
The Eighth Annual Massachusetts
Walking Tour, founded
by songwriting duo Mark Mandeville
& Raianne Richards, will
be coming this year to the Blackstone
Valley – performing 11
free community concerts while
traversing the state on foot. Since
2010, Mandeville and Richards
have organized now over 100
coffeehouse style concerts which
showcase local musicians and
artists across the state – creating
a quality evening program for all
ages and an opportunity for talent
young and old to be enjoyed
by a listening audience. Venues
chosen for these community
concerts include public libraries,
town parks, and historical properties
– and this year all events
have been funded through
grants from the Massachusetts
Cultural Council program.
Carrying approximately
40-50 lbs of gear and instruments,
the Massachusetts
Walking Troupe, including
veteran members Mark
Kilianski (guitar, banjo) and
Amy Alvey (fiddle), will be
hiking from concert to concert
using the Blackstone
Valley’s many recreational
trails – Southern New
England Trunkline Trail
(SNETT), Charles River Bikeway,
and trails within DCR’s
Riverbend Farm to name a few.
In addition to evening concerts,
the troupe will also be organizing
a series of short group
hikes wherein the community
will be invited to meet up with
the Massachusetts Walking Tour
as they travel between towns.
These public hikes will highlight
some of the Blackstone Valley’s
recreational hiking trails, routes
which appear in local author
Marjorie Turner Hollman’s
book Easy Walks In Massachusetts.
All routes will be displayed and
downloadable at www.masswalkingtour.org.
Massachusetts Walking Tour
The DRC advocates for the
preservation and enhancement
of Medway’s natural, scenic
and aesthetic qualities in order
to achieve the pleasing composition
of places within the context
of the Medway Master Plan. The
Committee works to maintain
and include suggestions for modifications
to proposed designs
and conditions for approval. The
Committee also reviews all proposed
signs in Medway and provides
design recommendations.
First established in 2003, the
DRC is comprised of at least
professions. The term of office is
two (2) years.
of each month, but is convened
more often if necessary to respond
quickly to various referrals.
Medway residents interested
in serving on the Design Review
Millis High Schools
Recognized Nationally
Millis High School has earned a
Silver Medal in the latest rankings
of America’s Best High Schools by
US News and World Report. For its
2017 rankings, the magazine evaluated
almost 22,000 high schools
throughout the nation. To determine
rankings researchers from
US News first analyzed schools to
identify those that outperformed
statistical expectations in their
state’s English and math proficiency
exams (in Massachusetts,
MCAS exams). Those identified
schools were then assigned a “College
Readiness Index” (CRI) based
on the schools’ AP participation
rates and how well students who
took AP classes performed on the
AP exams. Millis High School had
a CRI of 51.3, was ranked 31st
in Massachusetts and was ranked
664th nationally (top 15%). For
A week after receiving recognition
from US News and World Report,
Millis High School was recognized
by The Washington Post as one of
America’s Most Challenging High
Schools. The Post created a “Challenge
Index” and evaluated over
22,000 public high schools in the
nation. This metric was based on
the number of students enrolled
in college-level classes (in the case
of Millis High School, Advanced
Placement classes). Schools that
had a Challenge Index of 1.0 or
greater were included on the list.
Only about 12% of the schools assessed
by the Post earned the distinction.
Millis was ranked 1,704
nationally with a Challenge Index
of 1.637.
Medway High School Earns
Medway High School
earned a GOLD medal and
was recently ranked #10 in
US News and World Reports’ Best
High Schools in Massachusetts
ratings and #293 nationally for
student performance. In addition,
Medway High School is
ranked #219 in STEM High
Schools nationally. To determine
the top science, technology,
engineering and math
schools, U.S. News looked at
the top 500 public schools from
the Best High School rankings
and evaluated their students’
participation and success in
Advance Placement science
and math tests.
A week after receiving recognition
Medway Softball Takes It One Game at a Time
By Christopher Tremblay
It was a rough spring last year
for the Medway softball team as
the Mustangs failed to make the
playoffs for the fourth straight
season under Coach Jeff Kearney.
Although the Mustangs concluded
the 2016 season with a
5-15 record, Kearney is looking
for the team to break that streak
and advance into the tournament
this year.
“Our goal is to get the 10
wins needed to qualify for the
state tournament and see what
happens once we get there,” the
Medway Coach said. “We’re off
to a good start and need only
another four wins to qualify,
but there is still a lot of softball
to be played and the Tri-Valley
League is tough. We’re taking it
one game at a time.”
During the early goings,
Medway has only found their
way into the losing column on
one occasion and sits tied with
Norton for second place behind
Hopkinton in the TVL. One of
the big factors to the Mustangs’
success has been two incoming
freshmen; pitcher Catherin Higgins
and second baseman Elis
Cook. The two newcomers have
elevated Medway’s play to where
they are contenders in the TVL.
Higgins, who plays club softball
at a high level, came in and
took control of the pitching circle.
The freshman has already
recorded 71 strikeouts in 48 innings
of work while posting a
miniscule 1.02 ERA. In the batter’s
box she not only leads her
team with a .714 average but is
tops in the league.
“She is nasty, and hitters are
finding out the hard way,” Kearney
said. “She throws around 60
MPH and has three or four off
speed pitches she can throw for
strikes. She has so many strikeouts
there is no real pressure on
Medway Mustangs softball has had a good season, but after a few
rough years, is cautiously optimistic about the road to post season
play.
the defense.”
Offensively, Cook bats second
behind Higgins and is currently
hitting the ball at a .450 clip; she
is also the team’s back-up pitcher
if the Coach ever needs to give
his ace a rest.
In addition to the newbies
propelling the Mustangs to a
possible tournament berth, Medway
is also led by its tri-captains
Shannon McHugh, Kylie Sheehan
and Ceilidh Higgins.
McHugh, the only senior
among the trio, is considered the
vocal leader. Having been on the
squad for four years, the senior
brings a lot of experience to the
field as well as knowledge, while
keeping the rest of the team focused.
Sheehan is a rock behind
the plate for Medway and is one
of the smartest athletes on the
field according to her coach.
At the plate, she is batting .476,
leads the team in RBI and the
league in stolen bases with 7 to
this point.
The elder Higgins plays the
hot corner for the team and was
Kearney’s number one hurler last
spring. On the field she is a phenomenal
defensive athlete and
with her younger sister throwing
the ball so well in the circle opposing
teams look to get on base
anyway they can, but Higgins
shuts down the idea of anyone
bunting. Hitting in the three hole
she has also contributed some
clutch hitting for Medway.
While it certainly looks as
though Medway could qualify
for post-season play for the first
time in five years, Kearney and
the team are taking nothing for
granted.
“It would be great to qualify
for the first time since I’ve been
here,” he said. “How far can we
go if we get there, who knows,
but it’s one game at a time.”
Millis Spikers Aiming for Successful Tourney Run
By KEN HAMWEY
The Millis boys’ volleyball
team personifies consistency.
Jay Guinan has coached the
squad for the last 11 years, and
during that stretch, the Mohawks
have qualified for tournament
play nine times. Last year’s team
is a typical example of how capable
and steady Millis has been —
it posted an 18-2 overall record,
won the Western Alliance championship,
then bowed out in the
playoff quarterfinals to Medfield.
Boys’ volleyball is the only
team at Millis that competes in
Division 1, facing the likes of
Xaverian, Catholic Memorial,
St. John’s (Shrewsbury), St. John’s
Prep of Danvers, Milford, Medfield
and BC High. Excelling in
that kind of atmosphere requires
skill, determination and team
unity, and it’s those characteristics
that Guinan believes will propel
his Mohawks to another solid
tournament run. So far, Millis
has a 15-1 record and is leading
the Western Alliance standings.
“This year’s group has great
team chemistry,’’ Guinan said.
“The boys are very coachable
and a joy to work with. Our
other strengths are our size, a
solid work ethic, experience, talent
and technique. Two areas of
concern, however, are depth and
emotional stability. We’re a small
school, and our numbers are usually
limited. We have only nine
varsity players. Emotional stability
translates to handling pressure
situations. It’s a long season, and
then the playoffs arrive. What’s
important is how we deal with
constant pressure.’’
Carter Burruss, a senior leftside
hitter, was an honorable
mention all-star in the conference
last year and Guinan rates him
as one of the best players in the
area. He’s had colleges recruiting
him. Burruss is 6-2 and at Local
Town Pages deadline he led the
Mohawks in kills with 178. He’s
also first in digs with 147 and has
a hitting percentage of .359.
“Carter is a four-year varsity
player who’s a very powerful attacker,’’
Guinan said. “He’s got
a huge vertical leap (38 inches),
he hits and blocks well and plays
solid defense. He’s an all-around
prospect who’ll focus on academics
in college and could easily
play volleyball.’’
Six-foot senior captain Bennett
Stefanowicz is a right-side
hitter who leads by example.
Guinan says he chooses captains
based on their passion for the
game and their concern for the
team and Stefanowicz certainly
fits that mold. “Bennett has a
good vertical leap, blocks well
and is solid on defense,’’ Guinan
said. “On the court, he’s very
sharp mentally.’’
Guinan lauds left-side hitter
Adam Caretta, a six-foot senior
who’s a four-year veteran of the
program. Caretta has 114 kills
and 144 digs, both numbers are
second on the team. His hitting
percentage is .258. “Adam is very
focused,’’ Guinan emphasized.
“He excels in clutch situations.
He’s also got a very good vertical
leap, he’s a powerful hitter, plays
great defense and has good court
awareness.’’
Seniors Caio Almeida and
Merrill Cushman are middle hitters
who play key roles. Almeida
is 6-1 and is the leading blocker
on the team with 49. He also has
94 kills. Cushman is six feet and
is third in digs with 99 and has a
serve percentage of 93.6. He also
has 23 blocks. “Caio hits hard,
is powerful, blocks well and is a
solid all-around competitor. He’s
also in great physical shape. Merrill
is a good blocker, has great
arm speed, serves solidly and his
defense is spectacular.’’
Senior Bo Calais, a 5-8 setter,
is the team’s quarterback. He’s in
his second year as the Mohawks’
starting setter. “Bo is a four-year
player who’s consistent and plays
a blue-collar game,’’ Guinan
said. “He’s not flashy, but he
gets the job done. He’s the fastest
player on the team, he’s got a
high volleyball IQ and he’s solid
on defense, serving and blocking.’’
Guinan’s reserves, who get
playing time, are senior defensive
specialist Malachy Doyle, junior
libero Jason Parker, and junior
middle/right-side hitter Benjamin
Clark.
“Malachy is a first-year varsity
player who’s tenacious, always
competing with a lot of heart,’’
Guinan said. “Jason was on the
jayvees last year. He’s quick, has
good hands, serves consistently
and is very coachable. Benjamin
has a vertical leap that is out of
this world. He’s focused, has a
high volleyball IQ, serves solidly
and he’s developing a power
game.’’
Before the season got under
way, Guinan listed four goals for
his Mohawks: win the conference
title, be Central Mass. Sectional
champs, qualify for the state finals,
and win the state championship.
The goals are lofty, but
Guinan says they’re “realistic.’’
“We’re strong enough to
achieve all four,’’ says the 55-yearold
volleyball coach of 28 years.
“We’re for real, but we’ve got
to stay focused and poised. Last
year’s lost early in the playoffs,
because it looked beyond the
next game.’’
He’s a venerable coach who’s
all business, but he also knows
when to relax and enjoy a lighter
moment with his team. In assembling
a roster, he looks for
passion for the sport, athleticism,
size, and a coachable nature, and
players with a character that he
calls “being nice.’’
“My philosophy is to teach
kids to be prepared and focused,’’
says the coach. “If you’re driven
and prepared, winning will follow.
Millis boys volleyball has consistently seen tourney play, so Coach
Guinan’s goals of winning the conference title, sectional champs,
heading to the state finals and winning the state championship are
attainable.
Town of Medway Launches
Fiscal Transparency Center
Partners with ClearGov to Bring
Clarity to Government Finances
The Town of Medway has
announced that it has partnered
with ClearGov, a leading municipal
transparency and benchmarking
platform, to launch an
infographic-based fiscal transparency
center.
The new tool provides taxpayers
an easy-to-understand, visual
breakdown of Medway finances,
as well as insights into the Town’s
demographics. The site also informs
visitors as to how each
budget item compares to neighboring
communities.
The Town is part of a growing
movement of Massachusetts
municipalities that are taking
transparency to a new level on
ClearGov platform, which also
showcases basic profiles of every
municipality in the state. The
Town has added detailed revenues
and expenditures breakdowns
of its General Fund, as
well as Debt.
“We are very pleased to introduce
ClearGov to Medway,”
said Glenn Trindade, Chair of
the Board of Selectmen. “The
Town is constantly trying to
improve communication and
increased understanding about
municipal operations, and this is
another important step to bringing
increased transparency to our
residents,” he said. Medway has
made this new portal available
on the homepage of the town’s
website www.townofmedway.org
. Visitors to the site can click on
“Transparent and Open Government”
on the bottom of the
homepage to get to Medway’s
ClearGov page.
ClearGov sources publicly
available financial data on municipalities
to create easy-to-understand
transparency websites
for thousands of municipalities
across the United States, which
are made available to the public
for free. Medway has chosen to
upgrade and enhance our publicly
available transparency site
with more robust information
and to provide context through
commentary on the figures.
Norfolk County residents to disregard
a direct-mail solicitation
offering them a certified copy of
their property deed for an outrageous
fee of anywhere from
$59.50-$83.
Register O’Donnell stated,
“Today, there is a California
company that is sending a directmail
solicitations to unsuspecting
homeowners asking them to
send a check for $83 in order to
receive a copy of their deed. If a
consumer knew that the Registry
of Deeds would provide them the
same certified copy of a property
deed for a charge of only $1 per
page, plus an additional $1 for
postage, they would never agree
to pay such an outrageous fee for
service. The average price for a
mailed homeowner’s deed by
the Registry (usually two pages)
is $3.”
“These solicitations,” noted
O’Donnell, “are labeled Recorded
Deed Notice and request
that the homeowner forward a
check in the amount of $83 for a
copy of their deed. The Registry
has been contacted by many who
have received this solicitation. Do
not fall for this scam.”
Register O’Donnell concluded,
“While the practice may
be legal, it’s certainly not ethical.”
If you receive such a deed solicitation
notice, please contact
the Registry’s Customer Service
Center immediately at (781)
461-6101 or by email at registerodonnell@norfolkdeeds.org.
Additionally, if you desire a copy
of your own deed, also contact
the Registry’s Customer Service
Center and we will be glad to
provide you with one for a nominal
fee of usually $2-$3.
