TTHMs and HAA5s in the
water? (Well, not anymore.)
What does that mean?
In mid-May, the Town of
Holliston Water Department
issued a notice to residents
that in certain areas of town,
from routine samples taken on
April 10, certain contaminants,
specifically Trihalomethanes
(TTHMs) and Haloacetic Acids
(HAA5s) exceeded acceptable
standards by the Mass. Department
of Environmental Protection
(MassDEP). The town
tested four sites, as they usually
do, and the Rockland Street
sample showed 88 ppb (parts per
billion) for TTHMs (acceptable
levels are 80ppb) and 65 ppb
for HAA5s (acceptable levels
are 60 ppb). Subsequent testing
taken on May 11, 2017, after
the system had been flushed,
showed TTHMs at 58.7 ppb
and HAA5s at 23.1 ppb.
While the two chemicals can
cause health problems if they are
consumed over a lifetime, these
chemicals posed no immediate
threat to Holliston residents.
“If we took no corrective
action and always had those elevated
sample numbers, and if
you drank that water for 70 years
every day, then you have an elevated
health risk,” says Holliston
DPW Director Sean Reese.
If there had been immediate
risk, he says, Holliston residents
would have been immediately
notified. “The way the EPA
looks at it, it’s not an emergency.
You don’t have to cease drinking
the water, and the best way to
remove the residuals is to flush
the system.”
The immediate steps the
Town of Holliston took was
manually flushing the system, in
addition to automatic hydrant
flushers installed on the hydrant
that are operated at night. In this
way, water moves throughout the
system, so there’s no stagnation.
“Basically, (the elevated levels
of TTHMs and HAA5s)
were a result of disinfecting the
water with chlorine,” says Reese.
WATER
continued from page 1
“Since 1900, chlorine has been used
primarily in drinking water. It’s very
effective with a cost favorable toward
any type of municipality.
According to Reese, last summer,
during the severe drought, the
Town was unable to flush the system.
“When you can’t flush the system,
you have more chlorine,” he says.
“Typically, it’s done in the fall and
in the spring, and typically there is a
higher chlorine residual in the summertime.
Reese says the town operates
the water system “to be most effective.”
A well on Central Street, for
example, “aesthetically doesn’t have
the best water quality. We chemically
treat it to make it safe to drink, but
it puts out a high amount of iron, so
we deal with that issue of rusty water
on that side of town. What we’ve
done to alleviate that is to become
less reliant on Well 5. Now, when we
run that well less to lessen the dirty
water calls on that side of town, we
run the treatment plant on Washington
Street, the filtration plant, more.
As a result of running that plant, we
have a higher chlorine residual. It’s a
cleaner water, but when you have a
higher chlorine residual out there to
fight off potential bacteria, you are
more likely to have higher elevations
of disinfection byproducts. They take
a longer time to form.” The DPW
Director explains that in that area of
town, where water pipes lead to some
dead ends, the water can remain in
the pipes longer. This is why flushing
is necessary.
Reese says dead-end areas in the
system can pose challenges.
“Small towns branched the water
main with little thought,” he says.
“What you want to have is a loop
system, where you have water continually
moving,” says Reese. “Any
time we try to remove dead ends by
looping the water main, it helps the
water quality,” says Reese. Any improvements
help the system, says
Reese, who says a treatment plant for
Central Street will actually be on the
warrant for the October town meeting.
There are also plans, he says, to
loop the water main on Hanlon Road
and tie that in ideally by late summer.
Other issues the town faces, with its
old water system, is the need for pipe
replacement.
“You have to look at it holistically,
what you want to do first and what’s
immediate need, based on funding to
do that. It’s always a difficult sell when
it comes to infrastructure, and it can
be a Catch 22, improving the system
with minimal disruption.”
Reese points out that municipal
water is extremely highly regulated,
and the town has become more proactive
in its approach to clean water
than it was before the DPW was
formed, with a more streamlined
practice with continuous updates.
Still, issues can arise, and Reese
says the Water Department, and the
state, want to know if anyone has a
problem.
“Anybody who calls has a valid
concern. Everybody in this water
department – this is their profession.
Vesta Real Estate
Group’s Community
Shredding Day
On April 22, 2017, the Vesta
Real Estate Group celebrated
Earth Day by hosting its 6 th annual
Community Shredding Day
in the parking lot of Holliston
High School. Despite the inclement
weather, over 125 families attended
and were able to watch as
their sensitive documents were
shredded on site by Universal
Shredding. This was a free event
to the community, who turned
out in a steady stream throughout
the event.
As each car drove in, they were
greeted by a smiling Doriane Daniels
and volunteer Charlie Russo,
who handed each car a snazzy reusable
grocery bag. These greeters
happily collected donations
for Friends of the Rail Trail. “We
were humbled and thrilled to have
raised almost $1,000 for the trail,
which we were thrilled to support.
The trail is an amazing community
resource” said Ed Daniels of Vesta.
The Group was joined by a
group of business partner volunteers,
who braved the cold
temperatures and drizzle to help
organize the shredding process.
“Shredding Day was a wonderful
opportunity to connect
with the Holliston community”
said Cortney Black, owner of
Holliston Handy. “Vesta and
Holliston have been nothing but
supportive of my business and it
was a way to give back and see
some familiar faces in Town. I
will gladly be a part of the event
annually with how dedicated the
committed the Vesta Group is
the serving the community.” she
added. Vesta was also joined by
Ed Moloney of GMH Mortgage,
Greg Ross of Bright Insurance
and Chris Sahagian.
“We are so grateful to our
sponsors, volunteers and community
members for another successful
Earth Day celebration”
said Liz Kelly, a Vesta agent. The
shredding truck was filled almost
to capacity, according to Vesta’s
Joan Shaughnessy. “Looking
forward to another year of shredding
in 2018!” she said.
Summer Learning Loss:
It’s Real and You Can Stop It!
Submitted by Claudette
Rowe, President, KnowledgePoints
Learning Center
After the school year has
ended, most kids want to play
for the summer and forget
about the classroom. Ignoring
educational opportunities when
school is out, however, can have
negative consequences resulting
in summer learning loss.
Summer Learning
Loss Facts*
All young people experience
learning loss when they do not
engage in educational activities
during the summer. On average,
children’s test scores are
at least one month lower when
they return to school in the fall
than scores when they left in the
spring. Summer learning loss is
more pronounced in math. On
average, students lose approximately
2.6 months of grade
level equivalency in mathematical
computation skills over the
summer months.
The Impact of Summer
Learning Loss*
Teachers spend the first 6-8
weeks of a new school year reteaching
material to students
that was lost during the summer
months. A summer learning
loss of 3 months in the
elementary grades becomes a
gap of 18 months by the end
of 6th grade. By middle school,
this is a loss of 2 or more years
in reading achievement.
Summer Learning
Keep children’s minds sharp
throughout the entire year by
taking the following steps to
prevent summer learning loss
from becoming a reality for
your child.
Stock up on learning materials:
books, games, flash cards,
art supplies
Get involved in summer
learning: include them in
household activities, pay attention
to their questions and comments,
follow current events
Calculate math into the
equation: engage in math related
activities, practice making
estimations, measuring distance
or quantities
Enroll your child in an educational
program: find a program
that helps students catch
up or get ahead while building
their confidence
Dive into your community:
library, museums, parks, zoos,
The Lanterns at Warren Woods
Where contemporary living meets style
and convenience
By Deborah Burke Henderson,
Contributing Writer
Where does desirable singlefamily
home living meet the
convenience of condominium
ownership? They meet at The
Lanterns at Warren Woods, Ashland’s
most vibrant 55+ residential
living environment nestled alongside
40 acres of beautiful, protected
open space and across from
the expansive Ashland Reservoir
and the 120-acre Warren Woods
on Chestnut Street.
Whether you’re an empty
nester, single professional or someone
seeking the enjoyment of retirement
years, treat yourself to
a tour of the three village home
concepts at Five Fern Crossing that
are being developed by The Green
Company.
“The Lanterns is the only 55
plus condominium community
in Metrowest with 100 percent
detached homes,” Sales Director
Judy Jennings said. “These 93
homes will have first floor masters,
front porches and rear decks
or patios, and a beautiful central
meeting house and outdoor pool
are slated for construction this
summer.”
“We try to make things as
easy as possible for the home
buyer,” Dominique Sampson,
vice president of sales and marketing,
added. “We walk through
the homes room by room so the
owner-to-be can decide everything
from the finish and height of the
kitchen cabinets to carpeting style
and color to standard or upgraded
appliances. Judy has a long checklist
of items she reviews with each
buyer to ensure their new home is
personalized just for them.”
HOUSE
MUFFIN
CAFE
Prospective buyers meet with
home coordinator, Joan Karol,
three or four times for a half-day
each to select the flooring, cabinetry,
countertops, appliances
and faucets for their new home.
The Green Company is working
with top-notch industry leaders
General Electric, Kohler and Mohawk,
and buyers are encouraged
to visit the area stonework vendor
to sign off on their granite slabs
prior to installation.
Currently, The Green Company
is offering a $20,000 personalization
allowance for each
buyer. If the home is finished,
the allowance may be put toward
final items the owner wants to
select to further enhance their future
home.
“We’ll always offer some type
of personalization account,”
Sampson added, “but there’s no
guarantee about timing for the
current offer, so we encourage
folks to come and visit The Lanterns
to make a more informed
them.”
According to Sampson, initial
customer feedback during early
tours was taken to heart about
the largest model’s footprint. A
few key changes are now being
incorporated at Village 3 to provide
an even more spacious and
airier feel to the open-concept
living area.
During the past holiday season,
this 1958-square foot model
at The Lanterns comfortably
held a gathering of approximately
50 people.
Since the homes are built on
slab construction, each of the
three residence styles offers additional
unfinished “flex” space
upstairs. This fully-insulated area
may be finished to serve as another
room or left as is for storage
Puppy Training and Socialization Vital to Their Well Being
Spring has sprung, and so
have the puppies!
Training and socialization of
your new pup is vital in raising
a healthy, well-mannered, stable
and friendly adult dog. At any
developmental stage, you are encouraged
to take advantage of
training to ensure a happy and
healthy pet.
are taught training, desensitization
and socialization through
positive reinforcement methods.
Positive associations and training
be a confident, calm and secure
adult.
push your dog down from
jumping, you’re actually encouraging
play?
Updating Your Kitchen on a Budget
Alex Yavarow, Lead Designer at
Masters Touch Design Build
As an interior designer at a
design-build firm, I work on all
different types of residential remodels.
Year after the year, the
type of job I work on the most
is kitchen remodels, and 2017
has been no different. As the
heart of the home, the kitchen
is where families gather, holidays
are celebrated, and memories are
made. Thus, it makes sense that
this is the room that people want
to put their remodeling budgets
towards. But what happens when
you want a dream kitchen, but
the budget for a full remodel is
only in your dreams? Here are a
few tips for updating your kitchen
without breaking the bank.
Paint
Paint is one of the easiest and
most economical ways to update
the look of your kitchen. A fresh
coat on the walls is a surefire
way to change up the current
look of your space--but don’t be
afraid to think beyond the walls.
If you have wood cabinets that
are in good shape but are simply
outdated, paint them, too!
Painting them will instantly give
your dated cabinets a new lease
on life. Say goodbye to honeycolored
stain and hello to a fresh
white or gray. If you are feeling
bold, try for a more dramatic
color like navy or olive. Just this
step alone will leave you feeling
like you’ve added tons of style
and personality, all for a fraction
of the cost of new cabinets or a
full remodel.
Backsplash
Adding a tile backsplash can
add a pop of color or an additional
element of texture to
your kitchen. Timeless ceramic
subway tile is inexpensive and
can work in several design styles.
Looking to switch it up? Install
the subway tile vertically rather
than horizontally, or install it
in an interesting herringbone
pattern. Contrasting grout can
also add extra visual interest.
An added bonus—backsplashes
serve a functional purpose too—
they are meant to protect the
walls from spills, splatters, and
water stains.
Appliances
While new appliances are certainly
a big-ticket item, updating
your appliances to stainless steel
will give your kitchen some extra
sparkle and a more modern feel.
As an added bonus, new appliances
are often far more energy
efficient than older models, so
you may end up saving on utilities
over time. Plus, new appliances
often have plenty of additional
features that older models do not
have, so you will feel like a chef in
your “new” kitchen.
Fixtures
Replacing outdated fixtures
will also make a significant difference
in the look and feel of
your kitchen. Swap out that
leaky builder-grade faucet for a
stylish gooseneck style with an integrated
pullout sprayer feature.
Replace your old pendant lights
with new ones that make a designer
statement. These smaller
items often can become focal
points in a kitchen and can add
your own personal flair to your
space for minimal cost.
Hardware
Kitchen cabinet hardware
may seem like a small detail, but
it actually can instantly change a
kitchen from traditional to country
or from transitional to modern.
This quick and easy change
can make dated cabinets look
like new for relatively little cost.
Try out some of the popular finishes
like satin brass, matte black,
polished nickel, or pewter. Your
hardware can help you further
emphasize the kitchen style you
are going for. Tip: You want the
new hardware to match the screw
holes of your old hardware.
Whether you take on some
of these improvements or all of
them, these smaller projects can
help you with updating your
kitchen more than you may
think. And while a full kitchen
remodel will almost always be the
best way to create your dream
kitchen, these tips will help you
achieve the feel of a remodeled
kitchen--without the hefty full remodel
price tag!
area, and will remain at full
power throughout the evening
and overnight. The multimedia
company will be re-branded as
My FM Media. It will include
“Traditional radio is as strong
as ever, with a weekly reach of
93%, and with these new media
platforms, we can inform, engage,
and entertain more people
than ever before, more often than
ever before and in more ways
than ever before” said President
Tom McAuliffe II. “We understand
that people expect to access
what they want, where they
want, when they want it. The
new FM radio station and mobile
device app allow us to continue
to serve our region in today’s rapidly
changing world.”
WMRC has long been known
for its commitment to the community.
From covering breaking
news and weather, to tirelessly
and organizations, the station
has been recognized for its commitment
by winning Station of
Free Divorce Seminar
The Divorce Collaborative, a
Medway-based family law firm,
and litigation; and topics such as
child support, child custody, alimony,
and property division.
In addition, learn how to
prepare yourself for the separation,
financially. What are the
things you should be prepared to
handle now that you’re on your
own again? How do you handle
the Massachusetts Broadcasters
Association. “We recognize the
responsibility and embrace the
opportunity we have as a local
broadcaster, and we’re grateful
to leverage the power of localism
to make a difference in the
communities we serve. Our new
FM signal will only enhance this
effort.” said McAuliffe II.
Established in 1956, WMRC-
The company was
“It’s a fundraiser for the farm,
and it’s also an opportunity to
bring the community up here to
see where the project is at and
what the plans are, and it’s also
an opportunity for people to give
the Friends of the Holliston Community
Farm, said in mid-May.
“They just finished the fencing for
the community bee aviary. Residents
can rent a space for a beehive,
The Norfolk County Beekeepers
funding for the fencing around
the bee apiary and the hives, says
Kilkelly.
“Our main thing is the apiary
right now,” says Kriss Westland,
on the Community Farm Advisory
Board appointed by the Holliston
Board of Selectmen. Westland is
excited about the new apiary.
“I actually took a class from a
beekeeper and am member of the
Norfolk County Beekeeper Association.
I got the idea, because that
beekeeper started a community
apiary down in Pittsburgh, PA. It
seemed like a good use of the land
at the Community Farm. There’s
area in the open space portion that
seemed like a good place to put
hives. We’ll have up to 20 hives.”
A person can rent the
hives at $25 for the season,
up to two per person.
“It’s a good idea for beekeepers,”
says Westland. “As we’re getting
into swarm season, some beekeepers
might not have room on their
property for another hive, and it’s
available for rent at the Holliston
Community Farm location
if anyone is interested. Plots are
10’x10’, and the charge is $50 for
the blooming season.
“As a group, we try to make
sure it’s going to be a usable property,”
says Kriss Westland, of the
Advisory Board. “Our task is,
eventually, to put out an RFP for
someone to come use the property,
but we have to get a conservation
restriction filed that dictates how
the land is used. Our board was
tasked to do the RFP and get people
aware of the property.”
Some of the areas still in planning
stages at the property include
getting the land surveyed, so
there’s a good sense of boundaries.
“We’re hoping to utilize Scout resources
and get the trails labeled,”
says Westland. “We want to kind
of make it known, and educate
people on farming.” She notes that
there are relics of old farms that
are no longer active in the area,
and one idea is to put them along
the trails as historical markers.
There’s also discussion of planting
wildflowers out near the powerlines,
and of fixing up the house,
as long as they can make it sound,
to be used for workshops and possibly
as a residence for whoever
would take over the property for
farming.
“(The Community Farm) has
come a long way in the past year
now that we’ve all gotten together
and gotten things going,” says
Westland. “It’s getting a lot of
input, volunteers are putting a in
a lot of their time and hard work,
and I think we’ve got good momentum.”
Donations Keep Holliston Blooming
Holliston in Bloom has
received several large donations,
both monetary and
in-service, from local organizations
last month. Our
projects are 100% funded by
donations and run by volunteers.
HIB is not part of the
town budget and must rely
on fundraising efforts each
season.
We received a generous
grant request check from
the Holliston Newcomers at
their Community Outreach
grant awards night. The
money was put towards the
purchase of 50 hydrangea
shrubs along Washington
Street in front of the Congregational
Church. The
Holliston Garden Club also
donated a generous amount
to fund the materials to have
new self-standing window
boxes built. HIB will donate
the plants and designs and
hopes to install them along
the walking tour route in the
downtown business area.
Resident John Moore
and two employees from
Tree Specialists spent several
hours last month planting
the hydrangea shrubs
behind the split rail fence.
Resident Tim Smith and
owner of Moisturetek Irrigation
Systems will be donating
the labor and materials
for installing a drip irrigation
system for the new plantings.
Also, Rolf Briggs of Tree
Specialists will be donating
all the mulch for the giant
border this summer. In front
of the fence, there will be
new annuals and perennials
installed in early June.
This year’s America in
Bloom National Symposium
will be held in New England
for the first time and Holliston
is hosting a lunch and
walking tour on October 6,
2017.
HIB takes pride in building
collaboration between
local organizations and municipal
government. We
Acne Home Remedies. Do They Work?
By Lisa Massimiano, Licensed
Esthetician, Certified
Acne Specialist
Owner Skin Smart salon
It seems everyone has an opinion
on how to clear acne. The internet
is filled with videos on the
“best home remedies” to clear
acne. While some remedies can
help alleviate irritation and inflammation,
the only way to really
clear acne is with a managed
home care routine that works
to prevent the start of the acne
cycle. Anything short of this is a
band–aid effect and won’t provide
long term control of acne
breakouts.
Toothpaste might dry out a
pimple because it contains Sulphur,
but it will not prevent a new
one from popping up. Tea tree oil
and apple cider vinegar are potent
anti-bacterials, but must be
used with caution, overuse can
burn the skin. Coconut oil might
have anti-inflammatory properties,
but when applied directly to
acne prone skin it will clog pores.
Clay masks may temporarily
help to absorb oil, but they will
do nothing to prevent you from
breaking out in the first place.
Acne is a chronic disease of
the skin caused by excessive shedding
of skin cells inside the pores.
If you aren’t using exfoliants to
clear the buildup of dead skin
cells inside the pores and antibacterial
ingredients to kill the
bacteria that feeds off the dead
skin, you will never get the cycle
under control no matter what
home acne remedy you try.
There is no quick fix for acne.
The best way to clear your skin
and keep your acne under control
is with the correct home care,
modified life style choices and the
guidance of an experienced acne
specialist.
Fairy Day at the Grapevine June 24
Little Fairies and Gnomes Invited to Come in Costume for a
Magical Afternoon
By J.D. O’Gara
The air will sparkle with magic
on June 24 th , when The Grapevine
will welcome all local fairies
and gnomes to join in for Fairy
Day, from 1-4 p.m. The event
will feature The Storybook Sisters
facepainting, from 1-3 p.m.,
as well as a visit from author and
fairy-expert Liza Gardner Walsh
(www.lizagardnerwalsh.com).
Walsh, author of the Fairy House
Handbook, Fairy Garden Handbook,
Fairy Houses All Year and most
recently, Fairy House Cooking, has
also recently written the second
of a four-part, seasonally-themed
children’s picture book series (illustrated
by Hazel Mitchell), entitled
Do Fairies Bring the Spring?
– a followup to Where Do Fairies
Go When It Snows?
Gardner Walsh delved into
the world of fairies when her
two daughters were little. Her
family had just moved to Camden,
Maine, and her young
daughters were delighted by the
tradition of making fairy houses.
“My daughters were 2 and 5,
and they were just captivated by
making these houses for fairies.
As a former children’s librarian
and preschool teacher, to me,
fairy houses and this period (in
children) represent imagination
and creativity, and it was a way
to get my kids outside and do
something that just kept them
engaged.”
The author thought it was a
great way to engage all kinds of
families, so “one thing kind of
led to another” in writing the
books.
Her latest series of picture
books is still in the works. The
writer has just written the third
book – about summer, and right
now, her illustrator is working on
it.
“For those books, what I love
about working with children is
just the endless questions they
have. Working with fairies and
anything that has a magical element,
begs questioning. It’s
the beginning of having a curious
mind, and with fairies, who
really knows (the answers)? It’s
about playing with that idea and
having fun with it, capturing this
magical time in childhood.”
The author has also put together
kits that accompany her
books, such as fairy garden kits,
fairy house kits, and her latest
will be a potion making kit.
“I met Liza at a show, and
we we just instantly clicked,”
says Grapevine owner Diane
Marrazzo. The day, she says, “is
going to be really cute. We’re all
going to dress up as fairies, and
we want girls and boys to come
dressed as fairies and gnomes.”
Holliston Tennis Looking to Build Momentum
By Christopher Tremblay
Tennis is a sport played worldwide
by over a million people
recreational. It is also a popular
spectator sport on numerous
levels. Although the Holliston
high school has both a girls and
boys team, the Panthers have
not reached a high status with
the sport in many years. Coach
Kelly Day is looking to change all
that in Holliston.”
“We are definitely in a building
process so to speak,” the Holliston
coach said. “There is no
recent strong history of tennis in
town, but I’m looking to change
all that.”
Day has been the boys coach
for the past four seasons at Holliston
and recently acquired the
girl’s team this spring. Although
the boys are struggling this year
Day has seen progress over the
last few years.
“The seniors (boys) on this
year’s team have grown tremendously
in terms of their tennis
skills,” the Coach said. “Not only
have they learned and improved,
they are showing the younger
kids what hard work gets you
and they in turn are noticing and
working hard themselves.”
The Panthers may find themselves
in the middle of the lower
half of the Tri Valley League
standings thus far, but senior
Captain Shane O’Neill is doing
his best to battle the giants of
the league at the number one
singles spot. Behind O’Neill in
second singles is freshman Adythia
Ashokkumar. Despite being
a first year player on the high
school level the freshman is a
year round tennis player that
brings a very competitive energy
to the team.
Rounding out singles play is
senior captain Brian Chi and junior
Henry Powell. Chi is a four
year player who has brought the
Panthers many a wins during his
tenure on the courts, while Powell
has the experience, but didn’t
play all that much last spring – he
will next year.
“Henry has worked his way
up the ladder, but he’s going to
be counted on in a big way next
year so he’s going to have to step
up his game,” Day said.
Holliston has a rotating group
of six athletes competing to play
in doubles matches each contest.
Leading the way, playing first
doubles for the majority of the
matches, are sophomore Will
Flanagan and Nikko Alwani.
The next consistent tandem is
usually made up of Matt Whitting
and Thomas Sykes; senior
captain Chad Peipelberg and
Dylan Potenri are the final two
athletes looking for time on the
court.
Having four freshman on the
seven man roster says good things
for the Panther’s future.
“Four freshman starters says
a lot about the future for boy’s
tennis in Holliston,” Day said.
“These freshman are eager to
play and the outgoing seniors,
who have played since their
freshman year, are helping them
to build the experience they’ll
need to be successful.”
Much like the boys team,
the girls have a solid core of
young athletes to start for Holliston.
Sophomore Abai O’Neill
has earned the right to play in
the number one singles position,
while senior captain Haley
Hanstad is behind her at second
singles and freshman Mary
Hanstad and Addie Raymer,
who has seen some time at first
doubles, have been splitting time
in the third spot.
When Raymer is playing
singles, she’s paired with senior
captain Harriet Koblener at first
Coach Kelly Day is looking to polish diamonds in the rough as she leads the two Holliston tennis teams.
doubles. Freshman Alyssa Brucato
and Madison Rankin hold
down the second doubles team
for the Panthers.
“When I took over the girls’
team, I told them that this would
be a rebuilding year because of
the young age of our players,”
Day said. “Our goal this year
is to get them varsity playing
experience in match play and
take that into next year. They’re
learning about their play growth
as well as how to win.”
Although a lot of the Holliston
racketeers are not year round
players of tennis, many having
been buying into Coach Day’s
philosophy and are seriously considering
playing the sport more
often.
“The girls are noticing from
top to bottom that the players in
this league put in the time during
the offseason to become better
tennis players,” the Coach said.
“Seeing that the extra works
makes a difference, they are
eager to do just that.”
With a majority of young
players on both the boys and girls
teams Day seems to have found a
gold mine and is she can clean up
the rough edges and give them a
little polish Holliston tennis may
become a powerhouse in the
league.
Holliston Girls Track Squad Aims For Added Success
By KEN HAMWEY
The Holliston High girls track
team ended two streaks last year
when it edged Hopkinton for the
Tri Valley League championship
at the conference meet.
Coach Jenn Moreau’s squad
became the first team in 17 years
to stop Hopkinton’s dominance
in the TVL, and the triumph was
the Panthers’ first league crown
in 20 years. The league meet
is right around the corner and
Moreau, and her forces would
like nothing more than to win
back-to-back titles, then prepare
for both the state and all-state
meets.
So far, leading up to the TVL
meet, Holliston had a 5-1 record
in dual competition, giving Panther
fans a sense of optimism for
post-season events.
“We’ve got the potential to repeat
as TVL champs, but everyone
will have to give maximum
effort,’’ Moreau emphasized.
“We’ll need 100 percent in all
areas. Hopkinton is always a
challenge. They’ve got depth,
their strong,and they’re competitive.’’
Holliston’s dual-meet success
this season has blossomed because
of a variety of strengths.
Moreau, a high school all-star
middle-distance runner who
earned a full scholarship to run
at Syracuse, likes her squad’s assets.
“Our work ethic is solid, and
we’ve got a good blend of youth
and experience. Our depth could
be better, but we’ve got sprinters
with speed and our middle distance
runners have good endurance.
Team chemistry is also a
plus.’’
Holliston’s senior captains are
an excellent example of the Panthers’
spirit and chemistry. Emma
Guccione runs the 100, 200 and
4x100 relay; Alexis Mejia competes
in the 400, 800 and mile;
and Kelly Alves throws the shot
and discus. Guccione’s best times
are 12.6 in the 100, 26.4 in the
200 and 1:00.1 in the 400. Mejia’s
best in the 400 is 1:01.5 and
Alves’ personal bests are 39-4 in
the shot put and 111-2 in the discus.
“The captains are strong leaders
who are reliable and motivated,’’
Moreau said. “They lead
by example and by being vocal.
“They’re very supportive of our
younger kids. Emma is fast, and
very competitive. She wants to
win. Alexis is aggressive, smart
Holliston track’s success last year put an end to a 17-year streak for Hopkinton. Back to back titles is the
goal this year.
in her approach and has good
endurance. Kelly excels in the
shot and discus. She was No. 1
in the league during the indoor
season.’’
Besides Guccione, two freshmen
— Sidney Brucato and
Gwen Freely — have given Holliston
superb efforts in the sprints.
Brucato’s best effort in the 200
is 28.3 and Freely’s 1:01.7 in
the 400 is her individual best.
“They’re hard-workers who are
dedicated,’’ Moreau said. “Both
are top scorers, they’re aggressive
in their approach and they’re
fast.’’
Joining Mejia in the middledistance
events is senior Helen
Dolan, whose best time in the 800
is 2:29.81. “Helen has a great
work ethic and she’s strived to
overcome shin splints,’’ Moreau
noted. “A solid runner who also
competes in the 4x400 relay, she
continues to persevere.’’
Freshman Riley Marsden
has shown lots of potential in
the hurdles. Her bests are 17.04
in the 100 and 1:13.2 in the
400. “Riley is dedicated, hardworking
and coachable,’’ said
Moreau. “She’s very receptive to
feedback.’’
Two excellent performers in
the weight events are freshman
Isabella Bergloff and senior
Amelia Porter. Bergloff teams
with Alves to give the Panthers
lots of power in the shot and
discus, and Porter is dominant
in the javelin. Bergloff’s best efforts
are 31-5 in the shot put and
114 feet in the discus. Porter’s
best in the javelin is 101-10. “Isabella
is strong, has an awesome
work ethic, and her technique is
solid,’’ Moreau said. “Amelia has
tremendous arm strength and
excellent speed in her approach.’’
Holliston has three dependable
competitors in the jumping
events. They include junior
Caroline Ward and sophomores
Rebecca Stevens and Brooke
Geoffroy. The trio usually provides
the Panthers with a 1-2-3
finish in the high jump, and they
also score points in the long jump
and triple jump. Ward’s best
are a school record of 36-7¼
in the triple jump, 16-6 in the
long jump and 5-1 in the high
jump. Geoffroy’s best high jump
is 5-3½, which broke the freshman/sophomore
record this season,
and Stevens’ best high jump
is 5-3.
“Caroline makes it look easy,’’
Moreau said. “She’s got a long
stride and a good approach. Her
timing is also a plus. Rebecca
and Brooke have high jumped
5-3 and 5-2, respectively, indoors.
They’re explosive, their
approach is good, and so is their
form.’’
Now in her sixth year as Holliston’s
girls indoor and outdoor
coach, Moreau has the same
length of time on the faculty, as
a health and wellness instructor.
When she ran at Mount Ararat
High in Topsham, Me., she was
honored as the state’s Gatorade
Player of the Year. A middledistance
runner, she set the state
record for the mile.
Now, in her role as a track
coach, she focuses on developing
her athletes’ skills and techniques.
She also maintains a
dignified coaching philosophy.
“I stress competing hard,’’ she
said. “I also want the girls to
enjoy their varsity experience. If
they’re working hard and enjoy
competing, then they’ll reach
their potential, they’ll experience
winning and also learn some excellent
life lessons.’’
Track is a sport that focuses
on both individual effort and
team success. And, Moreau is
acutely aware that the sport she
coaches is attractive because of
that dual nature. “You can win
as an individual and also collectively,’’
Moreau said. “An individual
scores points, and that effort
helps the team, too.’’
And, excelling in that dual
capacity is exactly what Holliston
hopes to achieve at the TVL
meet and at the state and all-state
competitions.

Mulan at Adams Middle School
The Chinese legend of a girl
who saves the empire came to
life on stage at Adams Middle
School May 4, 5 and 6 with 75
children and teens grades K-9 in
a Prana Production directed by
Roberta Weiner.
The show tells the tale of
Mulan, who volunteers for the
army to take her ailing
father’s place. As
Ceci LeBeau wrote
in her review in the
Holliston Reporter,
“Mulan is a tomboy
who disappoints her
family by failing to
meet the standards of
the local matchmaker.
As played admirably
by Jenna Goldman, she
has too much spunk to
be the obedient, submissive
potential bride.
Her ancestors, brilliantly
played above and behind
the action like a Greek chorus,
dress in pure white and primly
remind the audience that above
all, honor must be maintained.
As in Fiddler on the Roof, tradition
must be upheld, as these cultural
norms are written in stone.”
Ceci concludes, “his girl
power theme comes to a climax
when both the Ancestors and
Mulan’s parents and grandmother
look on in approval as
she is honored for her bravery
and courage. She has made a
new tradition, and girls in her
village can now look forward to
a new role model. The entire
cast sings joyously, even the adorable
K-3 ensembles in their red
and yellow frocks. There are 46
of them alone. This ancient tale
rings as true today as it would
have a thousand years ago.”
Mulan was Prana’s third musical
of the school year. Earlier,
they produced a musical version
of Shrek and of Aladdin. Up
next is Annie and two musical
theatre revues as part of their
summer program.
The fall show is Alice in Wonderland.
