As the term “medical abortion” suggests, termination of pregnancy done with the help of
medication and does not involve any surgical or other invasive methods. A medical abortion
involves taking Mifepristone and Misoprostol pills, which are anti-progesterone and
prostaglandin in nature.
Many women buy abortion pill MTP Kit online to get a cheaper deal as well. As per the FDA
guidelines, these medications can be used to terminate pregnancies that are within 10 weeks of
gestation. This gestation period is counted by the woman from the first day of her last
menstrual cycle.
Not only is medical pregnancy termination safer and more efficient, it has a record of 97-98% of
efficacy rate without any complications. In fact, in recent study it was reported that now the
amount of women going through abortion with pills is just the same in amount to women
seeking surgical procedures for termination.
How the pills work?
Termination by medicines require two drugs –
1. Mifepristone
Mifepristone pill is anti-progesterone in nature. It works by blocking the essential pregnancy
continuing hormones- called progesterone. When the hormone is blocked, the uterine lining
which is formed with the help of this hormone stops growing and slowly disintegrates. As this
uterine lining is the one holding on to the embryonic cell, the breakdown of its tissue results
into detachment of the embryo.
2. Misoprostol
Misoprostol is a prostaglandin analogue drug. It is ecbolic in nature, i.e. it causes uterine
contractions. Unlike Mifepristone, Misoprostol is manufactured for many purposes like
preventing/ treating stomach ulcers from NSAIDs, inducing labor and for treating post-delivery
hemorrhage etc.
Women also buy Misoprostol and other types of prostaglandins as known safe abortion pills as
well. In medical termination of pregnancy, this drug is taken 24-48 hours after Mifepristone
dosage. Since the conception tissues are already detached from the endometrium lining
because of anti-progesterone, they can be removed with uterine contractions.
This is exactly what Misoprostol does when it enters the system, it helps push out the
separated conception parts and tissues through vaginal discharge.
What is the abortion pill procedure?
The abortion pill procedure includes
Step 1 - Swallow 1 tablet of Mifepristone [ 200 mg]
Step 2 - Take a 24-48 hours’ break
Step 3 – Take 4 pills of Misoprostol [ 400 mcg each – 800 mg total] and put the 2x2 in each
cheek pouches. Let them dissolve naturally for 30 minutes before swallowing them.
How long does it take?
A number of women have delayed reaction to medicine and may take more time than most, to
start the process. Averagely, it takes about 6 to 7 hours for some women, while other may have
immediate reaction.
How does it feel?
You will start bleeding and have stomach cramps after taking Misoprostol pills. Other side
effects may occur discriminately, like –

Nausea
Diarrhea
Vomiting
Fever
Chills etc
What if I don’t bleed after taking the pills?
In such case you can either take two more Misoprostol pills dosage, then wait for 4 hours for
the process to start. If it doesn’t you can take another dosage. Another option is that you can
just go a doctor.
When will I get my periods again?
It will take at least 4-8 weeks for your regular menstrual cycle to return to normal.
When can I have intercourse again?
Your fertility goes right back immediately after termination. In fact, you are most vulnerable to
falling pregnant again or contracting infection right after you have had abortion. Therefore, it is
prudent that you wait for at least two weeks or until the doctor gives you the ok to have
intercourse again.
