We have a high school graduate in
our family this year.
All of you parents who have
walked this road before us know that it’s a
happy/sad time. Thus
far we’ve been enjoying
the experience, but
we know there will be
some tears the day of
commencement.
I had always intended
to keep detailed
scrapbooks for
both of my kids, but
that never happened.
My son’s book at
least gets past his first
birthday, but for our
daughter, the last entry

is her baptism at the age of 6 weeks.
Instead, what I have are file folders for
each year of their academic career. I saved a
variety of things, but always limited myself
to one file folder per year.
As I flipped through those folders last
week, I came across birthday greetings that
my son’s first-grade classmates had drawn
for him and that the teacher had stapled
into one big booklet. Many of the birthday
wishes also include comments like, “You’re
good at basketball,” or “You are good at
sports.” Some of the primitive drawings
made reference to the Minnesota Vikings
or the Iowa State Cyclones.
Our son has been in the minority with
most of his friends, as they were all Hawkeye
fans, but Sam has been true to the Cyclones
his entire life.
My favorite drawing in the birthday
greetings was from one of those Hawkeye
fan friends. He drew a picture of a scoreboard
(it’s not quite clear what the sport is)
with the Hawkeyes scoring 999 points, and
on the other side, the Cyclones coming up
with 1,000.

entertain for the weekend

Everyone’s favorite rodeo events
are set for a fun few days during the
annual Cherokee PRCA Rodeo.
For more than four decades, Barnes
PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys
Association), Cherokee Chamber of
Commerce, the Cherokee PRCA Rodeo
Board and several business sponsors
have partnered to bring the rodeo
to town. This year it will be no exception
as the rodeo runs from Thursday,
June 1, through Saturday, June 3, at
the Cherokee County Fairgrounds.
Tickets range from $10-15 for adults
and $5 for children.
“The success of this rodeo owes a lot
to the volunteers who help organize
it and the supportive business community
we have that helps it happen
in many ways,” said Julie Hering Kent,
executive director of the Cherokee
Chamber of Commerce. “We have
a peer volunteer group that works
year-round to take care of many details,
and of course, working with the

Barnes PRCA Rodeo is great. This is
essentially their hometown event and
a great tradition.”
When it all comes together each
year, the Cherokee PRCA Rodeo is
three days of family fun and rodeo action.
Kids enjoy free activities with rodeo
admission all three nights, which includes
pony rides, petting zoo and a
kiddie train.
The most adventurous 6-9-year-olds
can sign up for Mutton Bustin’ and
Animal Scramble on Thursday and
Friday. Those events will take place at
6:30 p.m.
New to the rodeo this year will be
trick rider Dusta Lee Kimzey, on hand
to entertain the crowd along with
rodeo announcer Randy Taylor and
rodeo clown Scott Cameron. Also on
hand throughout the three days will
be Miss Rodeo Iowa 2017 Logan Kinyon
and Miss Teen Rodeo Iowa 2017
Allison Pauley.
The biggest draw outside of actual
rodeo action is always the Rodeo Parade.
Starting at Washington High
School and running from Bluff Street
to Highway 59 all the way to the fairgrounds,
the parade brings out quite a
crowd.
“The Rodeo Parade always draws
out lots of participants and spectators,”
Hering Kent said. “It’s the biggest
parade in the community, during
our biggest event of the year. It certainly
carries a Western theme, but not
all of the floats are rodeo related.”
Back at the rodeo itself, Hering Kent
likes to emphasize that all three nights
are different, with new competitors
each time around.
It is also an officially sanctioned
rodeo, so all competitors must be
members of the PRCA or Women’s
Professional Rodeo Association.
“These are all professional athletes,”
Hering Kent said. “Some of
these folks will compete in rodeos all
around the country and even go to
the national finals in Las Vegas.”
Get there early, enjoy fun games
with the kids, even shop from a variety
of Western-style vendors.

Noble County Pioneer Village opens for the summer
Worthington, MN, may be
caught up with the 21st Century,
but a pocket of it will
always be stuck in the past.
The Nobles County Pioneer Village
opens for the summer Memorial
Day, and it will be ready for visitors
Monday through Saturday 10 a.m.-5
p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. every week
through Labor Day.
Pioneer Village is a labor of love of
the Nobles County Historical Society,
dating back to its purchase of an old
schoolhouse in 1944.
Since then, more than 40 different
buildings have been added to the site,
where visitors can truly get a feel for
the things people did, what they used
and how they lived in the late 19th
and early 20th centuries in Nobles
County.
“We like to refer to it as the gem
on the prairie,” said Shari Nelson, a
board member of the Nobles County
Historical Society.
That gem includes buildings ranging
from a dental office to a blacksmith
shop, as well as a barbershop,
barn, bank, two churches, jail, a fire
hall, grain elevator, prairie homes and
much more.
Nelson actually has a personal connection
to the saloon building, which
was formally a general store.
“When my grandfather homesteaded
in the county, he purchased a stove
there,” Nelson said. “And now that
strove is in the pioneer house.”
It’s not just the buildings that bear
witness to the past, but the equipment,
furniture and other items

within them that hold a window to
past generations and their way of life.
From a telephone operator’s machine
to an old linotype in the newspaper
building, the tools of the past
come to life.
“Dear to my heart is the steam
tractor,” Nelson said. “We also have
an old farm house that a Civil War
veteran used to live in and an old sod
house that was made by past board
members and is still standing after
many, many years.”
While the village is open to the
public on a daily basis during the
summer, certain buildings are also
available for rentals for private events,
corporate outings and weddings. They
range from 60-person capacity in the
Small Pioneer Church to 300-person
capacity in the Big Barn.
Visitors can also take advantage of
a few unique events at Pioneer Village
both during and outside of its normal
operating season.
There are the Old Fashioned Fourth
of July and Christmas celebrations as
well as the Halloween Trail in October.
“It’s such a neat place, so we always
try to provide lots of neat things for
people to do, and we’ll always be adding
more pieces,” Nelson said. “So
much has changed since people came
to the county in the 1880s. Preservation
of history is so very important.
If we don’t save and share, it’s soon

History Lesson
In 1958, the Nobles County Historical
Society purchased a schoolhouse
that had been closed since
1944. The building was first moved
to the county fairgrounds, where it
became an attraction during county
fair time. It was generally closed at
other times.
Eventually, a decision was made
to make other arrangements for
the showing of the schoolhouse.
In 1968, the society felt the school
was only a part of the history of
the county and that other buildings
could be acquired to further
show evidence of our historical
past. Two and one-half acres were
purchased, and the schoolhouse
became the first building in the
Pioneer Village. There are now 49
buildings on the grounds, of which
36 are available for viewing.
Pioneer Village is conveniently
arranged to allow visitors to go in
many directions to see those things
which are of interest to them. Visitors
are encouraged to go at their
own speed as they view the various
buildings. If they are part of a tour
group, guides can be made available
if arrangements have been
made prior to the tour.

Buffalo Days was initiated with a
single event.
Thirty-three years ago, a local
wood-carving group began hosting
Arts in the Park.
“They were trying to sell some of
their things,” said Jane Wildung Lanphere,
executive director of the Luverne,
MN, Chamber of Commerce.
She said Jim Viland was credited
with beginning the event.
“Then somebody else thought of
another good idea, then someone
thought of incorporating a parade,
and it just grew from there,” Lanphere
said.
This year’s event will be held
Friday-Sunday, June 2-4.
The events begin on Friday with the
annual United Methodist Church Pie
and Ice Cream Social and Cruise-In,
which will feature music from rock
‘n’ roll band the Starfires.
Hot air balloon rides also will be
offered Friday evening for the first
time.

“We had to cancel those last year
because of bad weather,” Lanphere
said.
Saturday is jam-packed with
events, including the Buffalo Days
parade, Arts in the Park, a Fun Run
and the infamous Buffalo Chip
Throwing Contest.
More offerings to look out for include
Tae-Kwon-Do demonstrations,
free inflatables and a block party.
Saturday night, the Rock County
Speedway will feature micro-sprints,
mini-mods and factory stock races at
the Rock County Fairgrounds. Doors
will open at 5 p.m., hot laps begin at
6 p.m., and the races start at 7 p.m.
“We’re excited this year, because
the fair board stepped up to offer the
races,” Lanphere said, noting beer
and food will be available. “We used
to struggle to find things to do Saturday
night, but now we have all sorts
of things happening.”
Sunday morning, four-five
churches will come together to host
a community worship service at the
Historic Palace Theatre.
The Rock County Historical Society
then will feature “Tales from the
Graves,” an event featuring more
than a handful of re-enactors, who
will share interesting stories about
people who have passed away.
“It’s a fun, quirky thing to do,”
Lanphere said.
The community also will play host
to the annual Luverne Baseball Association
Tournament throughout the
Luverne, MN, hosts
annual celebration
June 2-4
weekend.
Lanphere said numerous people
come out to the events.
“If we have a good day for Arts in
the Park, we’ll have 2,000 or more
people throughout the day. With the
parade, some years the streets are
lined with people, and some years
it’s a little bit more slim, it just depends
on the weather,” she said. “At
the Cruise-In, we’ve had up to 240
cars, so if each car brings two people,
that’s 500, and we’ve had 2,000-
3,000 people downtown that night.”
Lanphere said the weekend’s events
are great for the whole family to attend,
and she noted the celebration
is a great opportunity to plan family
reunions.
“We invite everybody to come to
Luverne, and we welcome you with
open arms to have a great time, and
it’s going to cost you little or nothing
unless you want to buy something,”
she said. “It’s a great thing to do for
families and people of all ages.” F

SUMMER
Sioux Center hosts event to mark start of the season
Summertime only happens once
a year, so it’s fitting that the community
of Sioux Center would
host a festival commemorating its
arrival.
The Sioux County city of about
7,050 will host its 20th annual Sioux
Center Summertime Celebration
Thursday-Sunday, June 1-4, giving
residents and visitors the chance to
brush off those winter doldrums and
step into the sun.
“We are just excited about everything,”
said Heather Rozeboom, event
coordinator for the Sioux Center
Chamber of Commerce. “We love this
event. It kind of kicks off summer for
everyone.”
The Summer Celebration has been
going on since 1997 and this year, it
will include a multitude of popular
events.
One such event, the annual community
cookout, will continue as
usual 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Central

in Sioux Center,” Rozeboom said.
“We always have such a great turnout.”
During the event, fairytale characters
— two princesses and one superhero
— will be roaming around the
park, and they will be available to take
photographs with children.
Entertainment Thursday evening
will consist of Dordt College’s traveling
band the New City and magician
Travis Nye, both of which will perform
in the Central Park Band Shell.
Friday will have a golf tournament
hosted by the Sioux Center Kiwanis
and a cruise night, featuring vintage
cars.
That night’s entertainment includes
an outdoor concert featuring the Dirty
Word Band with special guests The
Ruralists. Before the concert starts, the
chamber will host a business cookoff,
which is a new event this year.
“There’s about 10 businesses in
town that will be participating, and
they are free to do whatever they
want. They can either grill or smoke
something; the options are endless,”
Rozeboom said. “We’ll have sample
sizes for people to try, and they can
vote on who’s best. The winner will be
awarded a People’s Choice trophy.”
Saturday will kick off with the
WOW Bike Ride, where participants
can choose to ride six, 30 or 60 miles.
Then it’s time to carb up at the annual
pancake breakfast at the fire station.
Central Park will be the site for the
Kids Karnival, which will feature a Ferris
wheel, inflatables, train and pony
rides, face painting and a pedal pull.
The park also will play host to a hot
dog eating contest for both adults and
kids.
The day will continue with the annual
parade, followed by the third
annual 5K Glow Run and fireworks.
The weekend will come to a close
Sunday morning with a community
church service.
Rozeboom encourages both residents
and visitors to take advantage
of the Sioux Center Summer Celebration.
“Other than just a few of the events,
everything else is free,” she said. “It’s
just a fun way to kick off the summer
and celebrate Sioux Center.” F

1-mile routes

It’s time to run. Or walk. Or even
roll.
The 12th Annual Village Northwest
Unlimited Run, Walk & Roll will be
held Saturday, June 3, in Sheldon.
Registration is underway and costs
$35 per person. Packet pick-up is
encouraged for the 10K and 5K participants
to be done 4-5:30 p.m. the
Friday before the race at the Wansink
Center at Village Northwest Unlimited,
though there will be availability
the morning before the race. Onemile
walk/wheelchair roll participants
can check-in prior to 7:30 a.m. the
morning of the event.
“This has really been popular, because
it’s something the city of Sheldon
has really rallied around,” said
Lisa Johnson, director of development
at the Village. “The support for the village
in general is tremendous, and this
event offers something for all ages and
all abilities. Almost anyone can come
on a Saturday morning and walk or
roll a mile.”
The event raises funds for programming
at the facility, which serves
adults with intellectual and developmental
disabilities, autism spectrum
disorder and traumatic brain injuries.
“All the funds raised stay right here
for programs and services with a concentration
right now on autism programming
and day programming,”
Johnson said.
Twelve years into the event, Johnson
said they continue to add and
improve wherever they can.
That includes the addition of live
music to the finish line a couple years
ago.
“We always want to get better and
make it a success each year,” Johnson
said. “The music made for a fun and
festive atmosphere, and people stay
and cheer on other participants. It’s
really a fun Saturday.”
This year, a couple tweaks have been
made to the 10K route, which will
now include a loop through the trails
section in the Sheldon Crossing area.
“It’s nice to be able to show off the
trails work that has been done, and
this takes out a couple hills from the
route,” Johnson said.
Johnson also noted the event has
grown quite a bit over the years, and
participation continues to be strong,
though weather is always a factor.
“In 2015, we hit our goal of having
400 participants for our 40th anniversary,
and this year we have 348 registered
as of May 19, so with two weeks
to go, we stand to get close or pass 400
again,” Johnson said.
That’s a long line of runners, walkers
and rollers making their way
around Sheldon.
Last year, one participant and one
resident weren’t content with the
1-mile roll and instead teamed up to
complete the entire 5K route.
“They did several practice runs to
make sure they were comfortable for
that longer route, and they created a
friendship through training, which
was pretty cool to see,” Johnson said.

That’s the focus of the Pearson Lakes Art
Center’s annual Celebrate the Arts fundraiser.
This year’s event, which has a theme of “The
White Party,” will be held 6-10 p.m. Saturday, June
3, at the Okoboji facility.
“Guests are encouraged to wear their Okoboji
summer whites,” said Amanda Schindler, performing
arts director at PLAC.
She noted that the building will be decorated in
the color as well.
“Essentially everything that can be considered
decor is white,” Schindler said.

Pearson Lakes Art Center hosts
annual fundraiser
The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with cocktails,
hors d’oeuvres, an art silent auction and live entertainment
from Taylor Huseman.
A gourmet dinner prepared by Duane Zahradnik,
owner of Yesterdays in Arnolds Park, will be served
at 7 p.m.
A live auction — featuring items ranging from
dinners to artwork and a vacation — and entertainment
by Kiefer Brandt and Scott Larsen is on the
agenda for 8 p.m.
At 10 p.m., guests are invited to enjoy specialty
drinks and gather around Kozy Heat fireplaces on
PLAC’s back patio.
Tickets for the event are $100 and can be purchased
at PLAC, located at 2201 Highway 71, or by
calling the facility at 712-332-7013.
According to Juli Johnson, accountant at PLAC,
about 250 people usually attend the annual fundraiser,
which she said is a great opportunity to support
the art center.
She’s looking forward to the event.
“I’m mostly excited to see our friends that come
back for the summer,” Johnson said. “I just like to
see all of the people who come out to support the
art center. It’s our one operating fundraiser throughout
the year, so it’s exciting.” F

Inspiration Hills
Coming up on May 29 is
our Memorial Day Celebration.
This begins at
3:30 p.m. with a live auction,
followed by a light dinner and
meeting the 2017 summer staff.
The entertainment is a quartet
from Sanborn, Four For Him.
Churches and individuals are
encouraged to give items for the
auction. These can be brought
to camp anytime. Please join
us for this fun day. It is a great
chance for first time parents
to come and see the camp and
meet the summer staff.

Artist in Residence Program
On Thursday, May 25 at
7:00 p.m., three 2017
Lakeside Artists-in-
Residence will host an interactive
Open Studio in Bodine
Lab. The public will have the
opportunity to view works
in progress and interact with
three artists, each with a different
approach to exploring
the interface between art and
science.
Quin Kennedy is a digital
artist from Seattle with a background
in dance, theatrical
lighting and programming.
His art work features interactive
installations that explore
how non-human elements
displace the artist in direct
decision making.
Mary Claire Becker is an
MFA candidate in printmaking
at the University of Iowa.
Her work is inspired by ecology
and merges decorative
elements with the complexity
of scientific illustration. Her
compositions question how
we think about nature by
exploring the boundary between
the decorative and the
wild.
Eric “Oz” Andre is a creative
technologist from Seattle,
whose artwork is influenced
by his Midwestern upbringing.
Born in Illinois and
raised in Iowa, his world view
focuses on the importance of
character and the rewards of
hard work. Andre explores the
relationship between humans
and technology. His MFA thesis,
titled “I Can So I Will Now
We Must: A Creative Response
to Selfie Culture,” is an exploration
of online social
networking and its effects on
our sociological, psychological
and physical wellbeing.
On Tuesday, May 30 at 7:30
p.m., Alex Braidwood, sound
artist and director of the
Lakeside Artists-in-Residence
program, will present “Listen
Right Here,” at Mahan Hall as
part of the Friends of Lakeside
Lab Science Seminar Series.
Braidwood teaches acoustic
ecology at Lakeside and is an
assistant professor at Iowa
State University in the Graphic
Design, Masters of Sustainable
Design and Human
Computer Interaction PhD
programs. His work explores
methods for transforming the
relationship between people
and the sounds in their environment.
