Four Mounds Foundation is a historic and natural treasure and
nonprofit organization distinctively serving the Dubuque
community through programs in preservation, education, and
community service.
With innovative partnerships, Four Mounds Foundation
advances our mission and vision by:

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
Four Mounds is proud to partner with the City of
Dubuque and the Dubuque Dream Center to offer
summer programming to children to access the rich
natural resources in the area. Nearly 200 children,
many whom would not typically have access to summer
camps, participate in wilderness exploration, team
building, and hands-on enrichment. Campers explore
the Four Mounds site, and take ecosystem excursions to
Swiss Valley Nature Preserve and the Mines of Spain.
The experience builds friendships, academic skills, and
self-confidence. Adventure Day Camp opens a new
world to hundreds of students annually.

ROPES COURSE
The Ropes Course at Four Mounds
offers a challenging team-building
experience for corporations,
non-profit organizations, local
youth groups, and more. The
course inspires cooperation,
advances teamwork, and builds
problem solving skills.
WINTER FARMERS’
MARKET
We support local foods and the
farm to table movement. Four
Mounds partners to provide the
Dubuque Winter Farmer’s Market
– offering fresh local foods and
wares to the greater community
while also providing grant funding
to area farmers.

HEART
Four Mounds is a
proud leader in the
HEART partnership.
HEART (Housing, Education,
and Rehabilitation Training)
works with teens at-risk of dropping out
of school. The program empowers young people to lead revitalization
projects in some of Dubuque’s most disconnected neighborhoods.
Instead of the traditional classroom, students spend every
day and thousands of hours per year transforming run-down rental
units into homes for first time homeowners while earning their high
school diploma.
GARRETT’S STORY
After two years in the HEART program, Garrett has
a new outlook. He is now a graduate and has
secured a job in his field making over $15 per hour.
Garrett now has opportunities to advance his
career through training at NICC that can guarantee
him a $22 wage at his current job, or move forward
with specialized training thorugh this employer.
Garrett feels he is worthwhile, is supported, and
reflected on HEART saying, “They have put my life
on track and guided me in the right direction.”

FOUR MOUNDS INN AND CONFERENCE CENTER
Four Mounds Foundation, listed on the National Register of
Historic Places, is home to 60 acres of bluffland, historic
gardens, woodlands, and rare oak savannah, overlooking the
Mississippi River.
As the last remaining intact gentleman’s farm in the state of
Iowa, the land, the inns, and all of structures on the property
tell an extraordinary story of history, architecture, preservation,
and culture. It’s a regional treasure that is open to the public
year-round with river-view hiking trails, a challenge ropes
course, community gardens, and rare wildlife.
The inn and conference center hosts diverse groups – creating
distinct experiences and memories for thousands of people
every year.
Four Mounds prides itself on operating the Inn and Conference
Center as an entrepreneurial support enterprise that helps
sustain the budget of the organization and its programs.

Dubuque community. From working with the City of Dubuque
and Dubuque Community Schools to provide the HEART
Program, to collaborating with local volunteers and wildlife
programs to preserve the Four Mounds site – we know that
nothing we do is alone.

Friends of Four Mounds. As we look ahead to our next 30
years of serving the Dubuque community, we must continue
to build support for our critical programs and the treasure that
is the Four Mounds site.
