If you’re planning to remain in the desert this summer, you’ll be happy to
know that quality entertainment will be very much alive all summer long,
thanks to the Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre (CVRep). Following
their highly successful 2016-2017 theatre season, CVRep has announced
it will continue entertaining Coachella Valley residents and visitors
each and every week this summer with an extraordinary lineup of live
entertainment including: three solo-performance plays, a series of three
dynamic cabaret performances, a jazz series presented in association
with Bill Saitta, a return performance from tango dance artists, Galvan
and Herrera, and a classical music series.
“Due to the many requests from CVRep patrons to continue offering
diverse, live entertainment during the desert’s hot summer months, when
most other theatrical/entertainment venues are on hiatus, CVRep will
expand this summer’s presentations to include a different musical or
theatrical live presentation every week,” says CVRep Artistic Director Ron
Celona.

the story of a man living vicariously through his son and navigating the
waters of a small southern town devoted to football. In this one-person
comedy, Mr. Posey portrays all of the colorful characters in this hysterical,

Michael Noble has developed an international reputation as an
astonishing pianist. A prizewinner of numerous competitions, including

Palm Canyon Theatre Set to Bring the House down with Rock of Ages
Set your travel destination not to a place, but to a time… the 80s! When hair
was spiked, and rock was glam! Palm Canyon Theatre is being transformed
to the Sunset Strip for a live rock show you won’t want to miss – Rock of Ages
will run from May 12 – May 21.
PCT’s Rock of Ages cast is full of company favorites including Nicholas Sloan,
as Drew, and Jennifer Singer, as Sherrie – the two young dreamers are seeking
stardom in the City of Angels, but face many obstacles in the concrete
jungle. Jennifer Singer, is originally from Palm Desert, but now performs
professionally around the world with Headline Guest Entertainment and Celebrity
Cruises. Singer started with PCT in 2001, playing Martha in The Secret
Garden. Many roles followed, including Kim in Miss Saigon, Diana Morales in
A Chorus Line, and Ado Annie Carnes in Oklahoma! Sloan has performed at
PCT since 2011 in such starring roles as Older Tommy in The Who’s Tommy,
Jerry in The Full Monty, and Prince Charming in Cinderella.
Other members of this talented cast include Jacob Samples as Lonny, Kelly
Peak as Dennis, Robbie Wayne as Stacee Jaxx, Jasmine Shaffer as Justice,
Lizzie Schmelling as Regina, Anthony Nannini as Franz, Tom Warrick as Hertz.
Ensemble members include Jackie LeBlanc, Allegra Angelo, and Andrea Bellato,
who is also directing and choreographing the production. Shafik Wahhab
is the show’s assistant director. Donald Kelly will “rock the house” with his musical
direction. Sets and lighting designs are by J.W. Layne, co-artistic director
of PCT. Derik Shopinski is the show’s costume designer.
Rock of Ages is a rock/jukebox musical, with book by Chris D'Arienzo, built
around classic songs from the 1980s. The musical features the music of
Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Steve Perry, Poison and
Europe among others. During Rock of Ages, performers frequently break the
“fourth wall,” directly addressing the audience and seemingly forgetting (or
perhaps reminding the audience) that they are actors in a musical. Audiences
will love to sing along to songs including “We Built this City,” “The Final Countdown,”
“Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” “Sister Christian,” “Oh Sherrie,” “Here I
Go Again,” “Don’t Stop Believin’” and many more.

Party and Fundraiser
Food Samaritans (AAP) will host
a dazzling IndepenDANCE Day
party and fundraiser on Tuesday,
July 4, 2017 at the historic
O’Donnell House, perched high on
the mountainside above the Palm
Springs Art Museum, at 412 W.
Tahquitz Canyon Way. The event
begins at 7:30 pm, and the City
of Palm Springs’ fireworks display
will commence at approximately
9:15 pm. DJ Baz will play a range
of upbeat dance songs (some with
a patriotic twist) and guests will
be treated to a ‘good ole’ 4th of
July Bar-B-Q with burgers, grilled
chicken, and more. Tickets for this
event are $150, which includes
an open bar, barbeque, entertainment,
and valet parking.
“This is our seventh year offering
this unique and fun-filled way to
observe our nation’s birthday,” said
Mark Anton, CEO and Executive
Director of AAP – Food Samaritans.
“This year we decided to step
it up a notch by adding dancing.
We are thrilled that DJ Baz will
be with us this year. Once again,
we are extremely grateful for the
generosity of Dr. Tracy Conrad and
Dr. Paul Marut for allowing us to
hold this fundraiser and fireworks
viewing party from this amazing
location.”
Completed in 1925, the O’Donnell
House served as the winter home
of oilman Thomas O’Donnell and
his wife, Dr. Winnifred Willis Jenny,
a well-known Long Beach osteopath.
The two-story Mediterranean
Revival-Monterey residence remained
the highest mountainside
home in Palm Springs until the
1960s. It was added to the National
Register of Historic Places in 2011.

As the season glides to a close and many of you get ready to travel
back to your tepid temperatures, the social scene here in the Desert
couldn’t be hotter! I really need a lot more than two pages to cover
only the events and activities I was able to attend, much less all the
other wonderful ones I could not! Several things come to mind this
week as I am running in so many directions. The reasons for being
involved are varied to be sure and mine certainly are. But one has to
really take note of these motivations and balance the importance to
their own life with regard to how it will potentially improve some part
of them or those around them or, conversely, how it might even be
counter productive.
I am the worst at saying no. I just can’t seem to do it. Why? Because
i have major FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)! Now, I say this to
be a bit funny but what I really mean is that if I dare say no to something,
I feel I would be missing out on creating a potential opportunity,
or causing someone else to miss out on an opportunity that I could
help create for them. What I have forgotten is that create is the
important word here. We don’t have to be at a certain place or with
the right people or at every event under the sun to create wonderful
things. Choose the things that will make the most impact on you and
yours and leave room for others to do the same. In the simplest way
you are creating exactly what needs to be in your life.
As always, this column is meant to inspire and create a conversation
about so many of the wonderful events and goings on in our Desert
valley. Through the rich and fully created lives of myself, my family
and friends, I hope to lead the charge to change. Change within
yourself, change within our community, and change within those who
need us...need us to be involved...need us to support, and need us
to reach within and pull out all the best parts of ourselves and utilize
them for the greater good.

AAP - FOOD SAMARITANS
ANNOUNCE ALLIANCE
WITH
DESERT AIDS PROJECT
AAP – Food Samaritans (AAP) announced that it
has created a new alliance with Desert AIDS Project
(D.A.P.) in which AAP will now lead the nutrition
programs for both organizations. Under the terms of
the agreement, AAP will continue to supply monthly
food vouchers to its clients but these will now be
distributed (along with a monthly supply of fresh
food) at the Morris & Lila Linsky Food Annex at the
Greenburg Peet Campus. This gives AAP clients the
opportunity to access other services provided at the
campus, including those provided by D.A.P. AAP will
lead and oversee all nutritional programs for both
organizations. The program will be called the AAP
– Food Samaritans Nutrition Program and will be
implemented starting September 1.
AAP – Food Samaritans is also in discussion with ACT for MS
to manage a nutritional support program for their clients that
are unable to feed themselves. The details of this agreement are
currently under negotiation and will be released soon. In addition to
the D.A.P. and ACT for MS alliances, AAP also announced that it is
in the process of moving people off its waiting list and is also in the
process of expanding its client base to accept new clients.
“Building on the philosophy of our founders, in 2015 we announced
our intention to expand our mission to serve others in the greater
Palm Springs community who are living with serious illnesses
such as cancer, MS, heart or liver disease, among others,” added
Anton. “As we expanded our services, we also subtly updated our
organization name to AAP – Food Samaritans to reflect our evolving
mission to ensure that everyone in our community facing chronic
illness and food insecurity can continue to live their lives with
dignity and self-respect.”
ABOUT AIDS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
“We are very excited to enter this new alliance with Desert AIDS
Project, one of the most well respected service organizations in
the Coachella Valley,” said Mark Anton, CEO/Executive Director
of AAP – Food Samaritans. “This alliance between our two
organizations will benefit AAP clients in many ways. The Greenburg
Peet Campus is on a Sunline bus route and has ample parking,
and AAP clients will be able to now easily access D.A.P.’s services
including counseling, primary medical care, HIV-specialty care, case
management, and more.”

The AAP monthly food voucher distribution location will change
from the AAP office to be at the Greenburg Peet Campus (starting
September 1). In addition to the Food Annex, this campus is home to
D.A.P.’s Federally Qualified Health Center which provides medical,
dental, behavioral health services, social services, a clinical lab,
STD testing and a housing program, as well as the Riverside County
Federally Qualified Health Center and the WIC program.
“For several years, AAP and D.A.P. have been working on a
strategic way to consolidate efforts and minimize any duplication
of services,” said David Brinkman Desert AIDS Project CEO. “AAP-
Food Samaritans has more than 26 years of experience supplying
nutritional support to the community, so it makes sense that they
will now lead the nutritional support program for both or these
organizations.”

Snore, Snore,
and Snore Again?
Maybe not: A few tips that may add levity

"My husband is snoring. Can my dentist help him?”
The answer to that question is yes. The cause of snoring is due to obstruction
of the air space in the back of the throat and, of course. it is in
the role of a dentist to help patients resolving that problem.
The problem sometimes isn’t just the noise snoring creates and the affect
on somebody’s partner. It can also degenerate into something we call
sleep apnea, where the subject literally stops breathing for a couple of
seconds at a time, depriving the brain from oxygen. These episodes can
last up to 10 seconds at a time and really affect negatively the health of
the subject as well as their energy during the day.
The main cause of the snoring is the retraction of the lower jaw and the
tongue in the airway space called trachea. This reduces the space for the
air from the nose to reach the lungs and that creates the noise due to the
vibration of the structures in the back of the throat touching together.
The sleep apnea is a much more dangerous problem but both sleep apnea
and simple snoring problem can be solved the same way. In the past,
many researchers came up with surgical ways to create more space in
the back of the throat but it did not really work and it was very painful for
the patient.
There is also an appliance called C-PAP, which consists of an appliance
where the patient has to bite on during all night and is connected
to a source of oxygen. This forces oxygen to the patient lungs. It is used
mostly when you know for sure there is sleep apnea and not just a simple
snoring problem. But this device is very big and limits the patient movements
during the night, which the patients usually do not like.
Dr. Bruno Lemay, a native of Quebec, is the sole owner of Desert Dental

The other method we can use, which is much more comfortable and can
work for both sleep apnea and snoring, is called a snoreguard. It consists
of a double acrylic tray that is fabricated from an accurate impression of
the mouth of the patient and these two trays, upper jaw and lower jaw
are joined together in a position forcing the lower jaw to be protruded
a couple of millimeters (5 to 20) until the position of the lower jaw is far
enough to create enough space in the back throat to avoid contact of the
structure and allow the patient to breath without making any noise.
This is much more comfortable then a C-PAP machine but it is still something
that the patient has to get used too and agree to wear every night.
Actually, it will have to be worn for the rest of his/her life as snoring is not
something you can get rid off.
Take note: Sleeping on the side may also help as it prevents the lower
jaw to be moved in a retrusive position.
There are several types of appliances to advance the lower jaw and
some dentist who have extra training in that problem can help you decide
which one is the best for you or you snoring partner.
That can enhance one’s life, especially if there are periods of sleep apnea.

We are loving working with Warner Bros. to bring you interviews and
reports on films that are not yet released to the public. This time we
got access to the link to the trailer of Blade Runner 2049. However,
it is the official trailer for the film. The movie is set for an October 6
release date. The Official Trailer begins with brilliant colors all set in
an Atari game...think MATRIX.
A huge hologram of a beautiful modern woman points to the life size
and even more beautiful Ryan Gosling. At this point I am all in this
movie!
I was a huge Blade Runner fan back in 1982. The whole futuristic
storyline, and the coloring of the film attracted me to it. Then I fell
into the movie with full fantasy. I read up on the director, Ridley Scott
and became a fan of his films. Then in 2007 Blade Runner: The
Final Cut came to the theatres. After watching this film I can remember
how it sprung memories from the first film.
How the story moved into other dimensions baffled me until I accepted
that there are other realities and levels of life. This is something
I always felt. Now I am being shown in a dreamlike ride through
tangible and real life happenings in one awesome movie. Is it art
imitates life kind of thing?
Now in 2017 Ridley Scott brings us the most intriguing film in the 3
movie brand he has created. Blade Runner 2049 reveals a dark side
of the future where people are separated in two distinct societies
held apart from one another. But why?
Detective K played by Ryan Gosling dares to go there. The trailer
does a good job. We get to see some plot without giving the story
away. You want a trailer to get the attention of the viewer but leave
them thirsting for more.
The first scene is set in the massive world headquarters of the Tyrell
Corporation. It is pyramid shape and dark. Ridley Scott's design director
did an amazing job at the interior of the pyramid making it look
almost exactly like it did in the 1982 original movie.
Soon into the trailer you see 'Replicans', un-borned people in glass
boxes lined up. Almost like a glass pipe that is getting dark. Then a
person is 'born' as a young woman falling out of a clear plastic like
womb maybe resembling a garbage bag to show you that humans
are expendable.
Ridley Scott leaves in the 'Atara' game look keeping the film like the
original. I have said many times that films that have sequels that they
need to update things besides the storyline, but in this case Scott
relives the imagery and it works to blend the sequels together. So just
what is happening in 2049?
Blade Runner Agent K is there to keep ORDER. Set in a world where
there are two distinct societies and if anyone asks why life is like this
you are in serious trouble. You cannot even talk about why things
are this way. One section of society lives very surreal and dreamlike
while the others...well, they are on their on. The humans and the
'replicants' are at odds. Each wants to take the other out. Survival of
the fittest comes in vogue.
The mission of Agent K is to reveal that the replicants are too prevalent
in society and they now are attempting to become the only ones.
Agent K now meets Harrison Ford's character who was a Blade Runner
back in his earlier days. But Agent K cannot be sure if Ford is a
'replicant' or not.
It has gotten so bad that 'Replicants' have infiltrated the LA Police and
other high level command positions around the planet.
Love and emotions enter the cast and things get more interesting. As
one might say the plot thickens.
Will the 'Replicants' take over societies and be ridden of humans
once and for all? You will have to wait till October 6 when the film is
released to find out. So let's find out together in October!

The event begins on Friday, June 9, when
visitors and artists may attend a FREE live
painting demonstration by well-known
plein air artist, Rich Stergulz. This will take
place at the Grand Idyllwild Lodge, 54620
Pinecrest Rd. Idyllwild, at 6:30 pm. Space is
limited and seats must be reserved by visiting

On Saturday, June 10, 2017 the Art Alliance
of Idyllwild will hold a Plein Air (outdoor
painting) competition with cash prizes. The
competition is limited to 25 artists, who
will be painting in and around the scenic
mountain community of Idyllwild. Artists
will paint from 8:30 am until 2:00 pm, when
they will submit their painting, (along with
1 additional painting) to the Middle Ridge
Winery Tasting Gallery, 54301 N. Circle Dr.
Idyllwild, Ca 92549.
The paintings that are painted during the day
will then be judged and become available
for sale during a wine & cheese reception.
Featuring the participating artists, the event
will be open to the public, starting at 5:30
pm at Middle Ridge. This opportunity to
congratulate the winners and mingle with
the artists with a glass of wine is sure to be

Plein Air painting is derived from the French
“en plein air” which simply means “outdoors.”
The first painters credited with painting
en plein air were the French artists of the
Barbizon School impressionist period when
painters such as Rousseau (1812-1867)
rejected the conventions that stressed studio
painting even when painting landscapes.
These artists immersed themselves in nature
and “chased the light” for a period of 2 hours
or so while painting outdoors. Generally,
one can determine the time of day in a plein
air painting by the light and shadows. In
California, plein air painting became popular
in the beginning of the 20th century, with
a resurgence of interest starting in 1995
in Laguna Beach, with the founding of the
Laguna Plein Air Painters Association (LPAPA.
org).

dexterity, and in general they tend to eat more sweets more often, and not brush
as often.
There is also another component that needs to be explained here. In the mouth
there are several types of bacteria. Some are responsible for gum disease and
some are responsible for decay. Some people may have the best hygiene
and still have gum disease and some who have the worst hygiene may not
suffer from gum disease at all. This is because they do not have the bacteria
responsible for gum disease. Same thing for decay. Some people will be more
susceptible to decay then others even if they eat just a little sugar and have
decent dental hygiene. That is because they have that kind of bacteria in their
mouth in a higher rate then another person. But that is not a reasonable excuse.
More brushing and plaque control with a topical fluoride application daily,
preferably with a special personal tray made at the dental office will help.
Very rarely a person will suffer from gum disease and a high rate of decay. It is
generally one or the other. If someone has a high rate of decay, in general they will
not suffer from gum disease like bone loss, periodontal pockets and tooth mobility.
It is a proven fact though, that the better the dental hygiene you have and the
better your diet is in terms of limiting sugar intake, the healthier your gums and
teeth will be.
So, it is not true that decay affect only kids. As long as you have one tooth in
your mouth you are subject to get decay if you leave dental plaque on it and eat
sugar!--
Do you think that dental cavities are problems only for
children?
The best way to prevent that is to have good dental hygiene at home and
brushing after any sugar intake, and to visit your dentist 2 to 3 times a year.

It is a general belief that cavities are for kids only. But in fact,
cavities affect all ages!
The reason why cavities are more prevalent in children is
mainly the fact that they tend to eat more sugar and have
poor hygiene habits. However, when looking at the cause of
decay, which is basically plaque with the presence of sugar,
it is easy to understand that cavities can happen at any age
even if your mouth is full of crowns.
Of course there are some people who have teeth that are
softer then others and are easier to decay but that affects
only 1% of the population. Basically any diet rich in sugar
will increase your chance of decay. Soft drinks, candies and
anything sweet will have a potency to create decay in the
presence of dental plaque. Of course in order to create
decay there has to be the bacteria that will transfer the sugar
into acid to decalcify the tooth. It is called dental plaque and
it forms very quick after eating. The better hygiene a person
has, the less they will have decay. It takes both sugar and
plaque to decay a tooth. The more you brush and floss, the
more plaque removed and the less risk of decay.
Additionally, elderly patients also tend to have more decay.
It is more obvious with elderly patients who are loosing their

ASCAP award-winning vocalist Kathy Kosins has won the hearts of
critics and fans around the globe with her eclectic musical palette that
expands the rich history of Jazz and Soul.
Born and bred during the Motown era of Detroit, she began singing
and arranging background vocals for producer Don Was (now president
of Blue Note Records) in the early eighties, which led to her
becoming one of the most sought after session singers. As a lead vocalist
she recorded for both Carrere (Sony) and Quality Records and
later toured with Was/Not Was.
In the early ’90s, Kosins, a ferocious writer and arranger, fell in love
with the freedom of the jazz art form and her writing naturally evolved
into a more traditional approach. Stints with the JC Heard and Nelson
Riddle Orchestras followed and led to a 1996 release of “All In A
Dreams Work” (SchoolKids Records), an impressive debut featuring
a first rate collection of nine originals and a cover of the Miles Davis
composition “Four.” Reported by over 250 Jazz stations, she reached
the top 20 in the Gavin Report.
Her 2002 release of “Mood Swings” (Chiaroscuro Records) continued
to bring her recognition and success at the national level. On her 2006
release of “Vintage,” (Mahogany Jazz), she rediscovered little known
songbook gems which she placed alongside a few widely known, yet
unexpected tunes from outside the jazz tradition, which brought her
glowing reviews from journalists.
In 2012, she released “To The Ladies Of Cool”, a dedication to the
West Coast Cool school of artists like June Christy, Chris Connor,
Julie London, and Anita O’Day. Kathy’s arrangements of those classic
pieces stay true to the tradition of lyricism and understatement,
yet sound so fresh and innovative that it is sometimes hard to believe
those songs have been recorded some 50 plus years ago.
“The Space Between” from 2013 finds her in the studio with some
of LA’s best musicians like Tamir Hendelman (piano), Robert Hurst
(bass), Eric Harland (drums), and Larry Koonse on guitar on several
obscure tracks that had been recorded by Shirley Horn or Nat King
Cole. Her Jazz repertoire is always enhanced by her soulful vocal
performance and it is no wonder, that she decided to include a Chill
Mix of one of the tunes from the album (“Night Bird”) which puts her in
another direction leading to her most recent album which is slated for
a spring, 2016 release.
With the working title “Uncovered Soul”, Kathy has recorded this ultra
soulful set with Grammy Award-winning producer Kamau Kenyatta
(Gregory Porter) and a stellar cast of musicians: Greg Moore (guitar),
Mitch Foreman (piano,keys), Kevin Axt (bass), Eric Harland (drums),
and Munyungo (percussion). On the album, she explores rarely heard
Soul and R&B tunes by famous songwriters like Curtis Mayfield,
Eugene McDaniels, or Aaron Neville and also more contemporary
tunesmiths like Amos Lee. It’s a well- balanced set catering to both
Jazz fans and Soul aficionados alike and destined to become a future

of the Year), Kosins has received grants from Michigan’s ArtServe
advocacy group. Her clinics and workshops teach performance skills
alongside business strategies for the independent artist and have
been a success at colleges and universities across the USA.
When not touring the USA or Europe, Kathy excels as a painter. Her
abstract acrylics on canvas are influenced by the cubist paintings of
the “50s. Commissioned paintings are held in private collections and
Kosins continues to sell her work at both gallery shows and concert
performances. She also is known to paint as a multi media artist from
the stage during various performances.
Kosins has recorded with many well known jazz and R&B artists to include
Aaron Goldberg, Reuben Rogers, Eric Harland, Peter Bernstein,
Larry Koonse, Tamir Hendelman, Robert Hurst, Jeremy Pelt, Jon Ellis,
Howard Levy, Don Was, Martin Wind, Ben Wolfe, Michael Henderson
and more.
She has shared the stage and performed with numerous names in the
