"It certainly did the trick, everything has been going like clockwork since. Shall
we make a date and time for next week, say Wednesday at 7.30 p.m. outside the
General Store here in Vermont?"
"Where will we be going?"
"To an apartment in St. Kilda Road near the junction."
Will left to walk the short distance home wondering what else could possibly
happen to make his life more intolerable. Once home however, he was now getting
used to hiding what was going on in his mind, responding only to the normalities.
Dorothy was now noticeably growing in size and in two to three weeks would
be permanently at home. Their financial position still left very much to be desired,
nearly all of their capital had been taken to build the house, and even though they
had been saving on a regular basis there would not be enough to withstand a crisis,
should one arise.
The offers of money from the organization kept surfacing in his mind. Apart
from the immediate relief, he knew that all he had to do was join the group
permanently, and all his financial worries would be over. It was a powerful
temptation.
If he did join them he would have to tell Dorothy about the type of work he
would be involved in, not sporadically, as it was at the moment, but on a day-today
basis.
He could imagine the questions she would be asked. What does your husband
do Dorothy? He's in electronics. Who does he work for? He's with the
government. Oh, what branch of government? She would have to lie or be noncommittal
and the questions would always be around the corner.
No, he would carry on with the same policy, resisting wherever possible, and
putting his best effort into keeping out of trouble. If things got really critical
financially, he would ask Tony for some money as had already been suggested in
the form of compensation.
