Will stood up and moved closer to the door. "Before I go let me tell you that
I don't look forward to a life of looking over my shoulder, just because of your
stupidity. There are three ways we can resolve this matter. You and I can come
to an arrangement tonight or I'll see to it that your international operations boss
gets to know what you're doing, and I don't think he'll be too happy, do you?" He
now had Dan's full attention.
"What's the third thing?"
"I can pass your name etc. to my Serbian contacts and they will see to it that
it's leaked to the Croats. What happened to Ed can happen to you. To be blunt
about it, I would rather it be you, than me."
Will watched Dan's face as the full impact of what was being proposed began
to have it's effect. Will reached for the door knob. "Wait!" There was now a
nervous intonation to his voice and Will knew that it was time to reinforce what he
had just outlined.
"I know you didn't believe me about the way Ed died, so I'll tell you what
happened. They saw him at the pier and followed him in a stolen car, grabbed him,
and probably took him to a deserted warehouse. Then, when they couldn't get any
more information out of him they strapped him down on the floor and ran a car
over him, finally dumping him on the road to make it look like a hit and run
accident. The police will never find out, and even if they did, what consolation
would that be for Ed?"
Will knew that he had achieved what he wanted. Dan was looking more
agitated by the minute and it was now only a matter of bringing things to their
natural conclusion. He listened to Dan's voice now husky and subdued, trying to
come to terms with facts that were bearing down on him.
"Are you sure that's what happened to Ed?"
"Yes I'm certain, but I don't need to prove it to you. It's your choice. Only a
short time ago when I arrived you had a gun trained on me, didn't you?"
"Yes."
Will pulled the American service pistol from his pocket and pointed to it. "This
is the world you have chosen to live in and my advice to you is keep your mouth
shut, do only what's asked of you, and spend the rest of the time covering your
back. Don't make the mistake of thinking that the organization is your friend, it can
